from alexandria. what's the latest on the investigation and what more are we learning about the suspect, james hodgkinson? >> reporter: fbi investigators were hard at work in alexandria all day yesterday, late in the evening they came you the with an statementing saying they recovered the two weapons. they believe both were acquired legally, possibly back in illinois where the shooter is from. they also recovered perhaps more importantly for the investigation, his laptop, his cell phone and a camera. this might help them determine any planning that might have taken place before the shooting and anyone he may have spoken to in the lead-up to this crime. one person not likely to be helpful to the investigation is the shooter's wife in illinois. she spoke to reporters yesterday and said she hadn't spoken to her husband since he left for d.c. in late march. >> did he explain to you or say
2:04 am
anything to you about why he was going. >> no. >> did you know where he was going? >> no. he said washington, d.c. but he wanted to work on taxes. he said he wanted to go up there and work with people to change the tax brackets. >> did he call you or did he tell you before he left? >> no, he made preparations for leaving, so -- >> what kind of preparations did he make? >> he sold almost everything he owned from his businesses. >> reporter: evidence collection will likely continue at alexandria at the ball field. the fbi says they're still interested in hearing from the public. they say no tip at this point is too small. >> certainly an investigation still developing. garrett haake, thank you. president trump continues to vent his frustration over the ongoing russia probe. nbc news has learned the president is under investigation by special counsel robert mueller, who's looking at whether the president may have used his influence to close dwoun elements of the russia

whether that's an offense. >> reporter: the former intelligence source tells nbc news, mueller has requested interviews with top intelligence officials, including director of national intelligence daniel coats, who appeared on capitol hill today in a closed session. >> there's rarely a smoking gun, so a prosecutor tries to string together a pattern of conduct, to paint a picture of someone who has tried to stop an investigation. >> reporter: trump sure gate newt gingrich tweeting, should be clear mueller is the anti-trump special counsel, but other republicans defending the probe. >> it's not a witch hunt, no. i think that, you know, he's got a job to do. >> reporter: the criminal inquiry coming 146 days into mr. trump's presidency, starting earlier than any other modern day president, including richard nixon and bill clinton. >> this becomes more than just drip, drip, drip. this is a torrent which could continue in a way that could be perilous to this president. >> reporter: mr. pence has

"the washington post" reports that now the business dealings of presidential son-in-law and adviser jared kushner are also under investigation by special prosecutor robert mueller. it seems the investigation is really moving along very quickly. what are they looking at in particular, do you think? >> so, kushner's financial dealings have been pretty opaque. so, one critical meeting they're going to be looking at is in december when kushner met with the head of a russian bank in new york city. the russian bank says it was about business, but trump white house says it was a diplomatic dealing. so, does that russian bank have

2:09 am
was attacking it yesterday. so, people are just very confused about why rod rosenstein issued this statement in the first place. >> let's talk about the political implications as we heard mark healperin refer to i it goes from drip, drip, drip to a torrent. >> i agree. capitol hill is very concerned that the investigation is only going to get worse for trump and that makes it much harder to pass tax reform, health care, because the president's negotiating hand is weaker. vulnerable moderate and even conservative congressmen on the hill, they're less willing to go along with what the president says if they know that, you know, some of his top aides are in jeopardy because of this mueller investigation. >> not to mention you also have mike pence now who's hired outside counsel as well particularly for this russia probe. >> i have a feeling we'll hear

version of a bill to overhaul this country's health care laws to a vote by the end of this month. some within the party are be becoming frustrated about the secrecy of the crafting of the bill. they are conducting negotiations behind closed door in a glaring break from practices of how lawmakers traditionally work. only a small working group of about 13 senators are working on the measure rather than the broader committees who usually handle the health care issue. earlier in the week, mitch mcconnell told reporters they'd see the bill when it's released, adding nobody is hiding it. meanwhile, republicans in the house are publicly brushing off comments by president trump over their version of the health care bill, which he reportedly called mean. speaking with msnbc yesterday, congressman mark sanford of south carolina responded to the criticism. take a listen. >> it's a bill he endorsed. and that he whipped. then he stood in the rose garden and said it was a good bill. >> but he said it was mean. >> what i would say is, no, it was an attempt at reform.
