msnbc live starts now. we begin with politics and a new addition to president trump's personal legal team as the special counsel's russia investigation expands. john dowd is a high profile lawyer who in the past has represented senator john mccain and investigated pete rose for major league baseball. the new hire coming just hours after president trump appeared to lash out at deputy attorney general rod rosenstein on twitter. new this morning, we're learning more about president trump's business fire. his most recent financial disclosure form shows he made at least $594 million sxoes at least $315 to deutsche bank alone. the report was released by the u.s. office of ethics last night and covers january 2016 through april 15th of this year.. president trump is calling for unity in the wake of the shooting thateft republican congressman steve scalise fighting for his life and four

others with injuries. here is part of his weekly address this morning. >> though we have our differences, what unites us is so much stronger. our love of our country, our devoes vocation to its people. now, more than ever, these values must guide us and bring us closer together. >> let's bring in mike vikera who joins us from med star hospital where congressman scalise is in critical condition. what is the latest on the congressman's condition? >> good morning to you, dara. we knew when the shooting happened just south of washington early on wednesday morning at that congressional baseball game practice for republicans, that steve scalise had been hit and it was serious. but we didn't know until yesterday when we heard from the head of trauma here itself just a couple of miles north of the capital how serious this injury actually was to congressman scalise. according to dr. saba, steve scalise came here, was

medivac'ed to this hospital and was in eminent death as critical as you can be. his condition has improved with at least a couple of injuries with probably more to come. he is no longer at that imminent risk of death. the risk of death is lower. but there is no way of knowing how long scalise will be in the hospital. the bullet entered his left hip, says dr. saba, traversed his body and along the way hit bone, tissue, arteries, blood vessels and along the way left hundreds of bullet fragments in scalise's body bullet fragments that the doctor says may simy not be worth the risk to try to take out. many of them will be left in steve scalise. meanwhile, paul ryan, of course, scalise, the number three representative in the house, paul ryan is the number one republican. he had this to see on his website in a video. >> we are being tested right now. and we are united in our shock.

we are united in our ainge rush. an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us. >> i ask each of you to come together, to lift each other up and to show the country, to show the world that we are one house, the people's house, and we are united. >> and so that is a theme that we've heard repeatedly over the course of the last couple of days, dara. that baseball game went on as scheduled thursday night, something we have seldom seem well attended, everyone coming together in unity. and it's not over for steve scalise. he's had another surgery to repair a broke b bone in his leg, dara. >> certainly good news that he's improving. thank you for that report. >> all right. for more on the president and the russia investigation, joining me, kevin sarili and jonathan allen, columnist at

"roll call" and author of "shattered inside hillary clinton's doomed campaign." thank you for joining me this morning. >> thanks for having me. >> president trump hiring another lawyer. this comes the day he acknowledged in a tweet that he's under investigation for the firing of game comey and he called it a witch-hunt. what was the effect of that one tweet? >> the investigation is clearly expanding. i can tell you, i've spoken with several sources close to the white house and they were a bit frustrated at that tweet, to say the least, simply because they didn't feel that the -- that the president had -- he was insisting that he wasn't under investigation and now he's saying he is. the fact of the matter is the investigations are very much ongoing. yesterday i spoke with several sources who told me that they had actually received letters from the -- from jones day, the president's law firm. they, of course, are telling campaign officials as well as transition team officials to save their documents in case they are subpoenaed.

the investigation very much expanding at this point, dara. >> and jonathan, on this investigation, what's conventional wisdom on whether ron rosenstein will have to recuse himself? >> i think the conventional wisdom is at the point at which he has a conflict, a clear conflict, for instance, if he's a witness to something, that he may to recuse hilz. but there's certainly disagreement about that in the legal world as to exactly when or if he would have to recuse himself. he had only been in the job a couple of days by the time he got involved in this. i think what's really interesting right now, dara, is that you've got all of these players in the trump administration now lawyering up, not with one firm, not with one lawyer, not with the white house counsel's office, but with separate private lawyers. what that indicates is that they have separate interests, both legal and political and that's the problem for the white house. the biggest problem for president trump right now is that people may decide that it's

in their best interests not to be as loyal to him as they have been so far. >> and i want to follow up because if rod rosenstein does recuse hil recuse himself, the associated general would oversee the investigation. what do we know about her? >> we don't know a lot about her except that she's widely approved of, widely liked within the legal community, within the justice department. you know, she's somebody who obviously would be thrust into the spotlight in that case. interestingly, the justice department doesn't have a full roster of people. presidt trump sn't nominated a lot of pele. so they have a sort of succession list within the justice department in the event that people have to recuse themselves or there's a terror strike or something else. right now, she's in that place and you sort of two down the list. david puentae is somebody else who is on that list of people.

it's really amazing, though, that you would have to contemplate how far down you would have to go in the justice department before you could find somebody who is considered to be deconflicted or not conflicted or impartial. >> and, kevin, amid all this, there is a report of politico over fuming trump white house aides fretting over this russia investigation. what are you hearing from the are white house? >> frustration. they have not been able to get out on front on any other issue he. this week was supposed to be workforce development week, talking about apprenticeships. but that went ahead as scheduled. but even on the way out of the white house when top ceos around the country, particularly in the infrastructure community, i was talking with several of them as they were leaving. what they told me is that they thought the program was great, but the news of the day is consistently dominated by this rushing ya probe. for all intents and purposes,

the president has used his twitter account not to draw focus to the policy he's fighting for, but to politicize these investigations. republicans are on capitol hill are saying, wait a minute, stick to the policy. stick to gettinghat through. they feel thatvery te h tweets about one of these issues or about the investigation, it takes the spotlight away from these other issues that he wants to get done. >> maybe something we can all agree on. kevin, jonathan, thank you so much for your time this morning. >> thank you. have a great weekend. >> take care, dara. now to breaking news near the coast of japan. the search of seven sailors unacted for after the uss fitzgerald collided with a merchant ship. there's now a second navy destroyer in the area to assist. hans nichols joins me now. hans, what is the late oeft this

search? >> wbl deliberation happened in the dark, the cause is still unknown and the damage appears extensive. the "uss fitzgerald" back in port after it took on waerpt following a dangerous collision at sea. naval officials say a philippine registered merchant vessel somehow smashed into the much smaller navy destroyer while it was conducting routine operations off the coast of japan. the ship's bridge was damaged in the collision limiting communications with crew members on board. at least three crew members were air lifted off the ship to nearby hospitals, including the commanding officer, brice benson, who is reportedly in stable condition. other sailors missing, amid fears they could be thrown overboard or trapped inside damaged sections of the destroyer. the collision happening when many would have been asleep. the japanese coast guard is assisting with the search and in a statement the navy says right now we are focused on two things. the safety of the ship and the

good morning to you. >> good morning, dar federal investigator loong at e evidce they found, things like the laptop and cell phone of the gunman say they do not have any evidence of advanced planning as they're trying to figure out a motive for james hodgkinson. they also saw signs that he was making preparations to go back to illinois where he had been living based on some of the interviews they've done, speaking with his wife and learning that he was getting his car repaired right before the shooting. so all of that leaves investigators puzzled at this moment, but at the same time, they have identified one very interesting clue. >> a deepening mystery around the gunman behind webs's congressional baseball shooting. officials say james hodgkinson carried a handwritten list with the names of house republicans,

including alabama's mo brooks, arizona's trent franks and south carolina's jeff duncan. congressman duncan says he spoke to the gunman shortly before the interaction erupted. >> i did have an interaction asking me if the team practicing was republican or democrat team. >> president trump suggested the vines could inspire unity. >> my dear friend, steve scalise took a bullet for all of us. our country will perhaps become closer. >> in miami's little havana friday, the president signed a new cuba policy that brings back restrictions lifted by president trump. the move will curb individual americans from travel to cuba and tighten u.s. business with business with military-owned interests. but the president draw attention away from that event with new actions tied to the russia

investigatio president trump added washington's john dowd to his outside legal team. but can another lawyer bench the president's twitter game? friday, the president declared i am being investigated for firing the fbi director by the man who told me to fire the fbi director. witch hunt. referring to deputy attorney general rod rosenstein. the president delivered another surprise. he voluntarily released a federal financial disclosure, not due until next year. the filing, cleared by the office of government ethics, shows the president reported earnings in a broad range, beginning at $559 million since january 2016. but president trump refuses to release any tax returns. >> and sources close to the president's outside legal team also take issue with that tweet from the president, saying when

the sixth day of deliberations in the bill cosby trial continues this morning. the jury returned to the courtroom to ask questions throughout the week. cosby repeatedly denied all allegations of sexual misconduct. nbc's ron allen joins me now. where do things stand this morning? >> it's been a very intense time here at the courthouse, a standoff that's been going on for some 50 hours in the jury room and that's longer than the entire trial which a lot of legal observers say is very unusual. what's even more unusual is that the jurors came out here a couple of days ago into the courtroom and said that they were deadlocked and they've still continued tlib rating for some 20 hours since thr. so they've returned this morning. they begin deliberations. they could go on for a time and end at any moment. some legal watchers think what's happening inside the jury room is there's probably a majority

of jurors pushing for a conviction and a smaller group holding out. that's why, perhaps, the cosby team has been pushing the judge to declare a mistrial time and time between. and the judge has pushed back saying the law allows the jury to to deliberate for as long as they want and he can't intervene. now, bill cosby left the courthouse last night. they are trying to put on a very brave front, look positive. here is what he had to say to some of his supporters who were out there. >> i just want to wish all of the fathers a happy father's day and i want to thank the jury for their long days and their honest work individually. i also want to thank the supporters who have been here and, please, do the supporters,

capital. protest whag they see as injustice. police officer haramo jiminez found not guilty in the death of philando castile. castile was shot five times. his girlfriend, broadcasting the aftermath live to facebook. 10 white and two black jurors spent for days deliberating. new this morning, we're hearing from one of those jurors. >> we feel so much pain for the family, especially when the verdict was said out loud. we all just kind of sunk in our -- but we had to do what we had to do. >> the jurors say the law favored officer jiminez, who took the stand in his own defense saying i was scared to death and i thought i was die. he said castile match the

description of a robbery suspect. >> you told him to get his i.d., sir, his driver's license. >> prosecutors argued castile had a permit, warned the officer that he had a firearm and that the officer overreacted. castile's family i outraged by the verdict. >> my son loved this city and this city killed my son and the murderer gets away. >> the officer's attorney says he is still shook up, but extremely happy it's over. even though the officer was found not guilty, he is being let go by the that police department. the department says they will enter into a voluntary separation with him and help him transition into a new job. they say it's simply not in the public interest for him to remain a police officer with that department. dara. >> thank you so much, live for st. paul. that will do it for me. i'm dara brown. at the top of the hour, we speak
