good night from nbc news headquarters here in new york. what donald trump jr. would have done differently with controversy mounting. the meeting he had with a russian lawyer in the midst of 2016 election. plus, senate republicans delay their august recess. now mitch mcconnell has a time line for the obamacare replacement plan. and new information about the 16 american service members that died in a military plane crash. this morning, the cause still under investigation. good morning, everyone, it's wednesday, july 12th, i'm ayman mohyeldin alongside yasmin vossoughian and louis burgdorf.

well, apparently under pressure from "the new york times" donald trump jr. released e-mails in which he enthusiastically greeted an offer from a russian intermediary. understand the subject line, russia-clinton-private and confidential. and rob goldstone wrote. the crown prosecutor of russia met with his father this morning and their meeting offered to provide the trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate hillary and her dealings with. and especially later in the summer. on june 7th, goldstone to wrote to set up the meeting and identified as the russian government attorney flying over from moscow.
2:02 am
junior told that paul manafort would likely attend with him. this despite trump junior saying in his revised sunday statement, in quote, i asked jared and paul to attend but told them nothing of the substance. trump junior said he was releasing the e-mails. and yesterday, president trump released a short statement saying my son is a high-quality person and i applaud his transparency. but "the new york times" said it was doing a story on those e-mails and as huff post michael calderon reported, the response to the e-mails by 11:00 a.m. and that is exactly when he tweeted them out. >> and on fox news last night, donald trump said he realizes that meeting with someone as a, quote, russian government attorney could have been angled better. take a listen. >> in retrospect, i probably would have done things a little

differently. again, this is where the russia mania. this is before they were building it up in the press. for me, this is opposition research that had a contrast to you the stories i've been hearing about that have probably been reported for years, not just the campaign. so, i think i wanted to hear it out. but it was apparent that there was not what the meeting was about. >> and this morning, agency part of the e-mails, nbc's keir simmons has the exclusive interview. >> reporter: we showed russian lawyer natalia vesselnitskaya te e-mails. here, donald trump jr. is told that they want to schedule a meeting with him. and the russian government attorney who is flying over from moscow. the russian government attorney. that means you. >> translator: no, i'm certainly

2:09 am
they're talking about health care. they're talking about jobs. and they're talking about issues that we haven't been able to enact legislation on. and why this is tittillating on capitol hill, it doesn't resonate much. because when it did resonate back home, that's when you'll see senators talking to trump directly. even democrats in more conser conservative states are saying, you know, they're not promoting this as much as i would have anticipated. but it's an interesting -- it's an interesting topic, for sure. >> molly, it seems to me like a lot of people in washington and the white house, especially, trying to distance themselves from this. mike pence's office putting out a statement. i want to read that to you saying, quote, the vice president is working every day to advance the president's agenda. he was not aware of the meeting. and he also was not focused on

this would be a big no-no. but if you look at somebody like francis rooney saying, hey, well, we'll give don junior a bit of a break because he's a businessman, that's where i think they're trying to distance themselves on it. >> i hope that dr. zhivago and vodka -- all right. great to have you with us. switching news on capitol hill, the senate is delaying their august recess for two weeks as lawmakers face a packed legislative agenda including the obamacare replacement plan. majority leader mitch mcconnell made an announcement yesterday. take a listen. >> we've got defense authorization. we've got debt ceiling. we've got the fda user fee and other important legislation that we need to address. and we simply, as a result of all of this obstructionism don't have enough time to address all of these issues between now and the originally amended august recess. >> under that political
