plus, a bomb shell from "the washington post." a new report claims the misleading statement about don jr.'s meeting last year was drafted by his father. america first does not mean america alone. good morning, everybody. it's tuesday, august 1st. what a morning it is. after just ten days on the job, white house communications director anthony scaramucci has been ousted. he was pushed out the same day new chief of staff john kelly was sworn in. "the wall street journal" citing two officials that shortly after taking oath, the new chief urged him in a one-on-one meeting to

resign. his remarks last week disgusted and offended some close to the president. including melania trump and ivanka trump, who had initially advocated for scaramucci's hiring. >> you said the president found his remarks inappropriate. obviously, the president is not a stranger to salty language. >> he found it in appropriate for a person in that position. >> to do what? >> i believe the comments he made he found those comments inappropriate. i'm not sure what's unclear. i don't think it's complicated to understand that the president felt the comments were inappropriate. i can't really explain it any further than that. >> sanders made it clear that all staff will report to general kelly. scaramucci said he believed the fallout from his "new yorker"

interview would blow over. it was soon clear that mr. scaramucci would not be a fixture of the administration, but a transitory figure who created an opportunity for mr. trump, with his daughter and son-in-law, jared kushner, to undertake the far-reaching shakeup intended to purge the white house staff of leakers and aides viewed at not sufficiently loyal to his cause. they only met for the first time in november. once he took office, he became ensnared in one of the earliest changes of the administration. the travel ban. causing chaos at airports around the country. as officials scrambled to understand the order's meeting. kelly had dialed in a white house conference call from a coast guard plane as he headed back to washington. he needed guidance from the

white house, which had not asked his department for a legal review of the order. halfway into the briefing, someone on the call looked up at a television in his office. quote, the president is signing the executive order that we're discussing. the official said, stunned. secretary kelly has denied they didn't know the order was coming. >> we did know the e.o. was coming. we had people involved in the general drafting of it. you know, clearly, um, it was -- this whole approach was part of what then candidate trump talked about for a year or two. we did know it was coming. he had to issue a statement clarifying that green card holders would receive a waiver to enter the united states. something unclear in the first days of the ban. according to "the times" steve bannon oversaw the writing of the order.

joining us now, live from washington, capitol hill reporter for the hill, molly cooper. good to talk to you this morning. >> good to talk to you. >> not sure what to talk about because there's nothing going on. >> nothing to see here. >> the president's tweets yesterday, after six months of shakeup, he says there's no chaos in the white house. and that yesterday was really a great day. molly, what's going on here? talk to me. >> hey, happy days are here again. you know in it seems like president trump, in the comment he's made leading up to the decision to appoint general kelly as the new chief of staff, he really enjoys being around generals. he constantly refers to them. general "mad dog" matt irk s. one of his faith names to evoke when he's giving speeches. he likes the order and the discipline. the question is however, will general kelly have the ability

to instill order and discipline coming directly from trump? and, you know, it was unfortunate for reince priebus when he was appointed chief of staff because he didn't really have the same -- i don't know if the word is respect, because, because it's respect, it's a different kind of job being chief of staff for the president of the united states, as opposed to, you know, the head of a party getting your party elected to representative office. that's a huge deal. when it comes to instilling discipline, order, and -- you know -- order of operations, general kelly seems to be -- to keep his troops in line and has a lot of respect from the people who have worked for him and under him. >>let talk about scaramucci being forced out here. considering the new chief of staff, while it was shocking that scaramucci was push out, it wasn't surprising with a four-star general at the helm. do you think this was more kelly

or the president feeling that the remarks to "the new yorker" were inappropriate? >> i think this is more kelly. from what i understand, talking to several sources who worked with kelly back in his days in the marines, he doesn't stand for this. he does not stand for this. there is one mission. the mission is to take the hill. i mean the hill, not capitol hill, in general. out in the battlefield. but, you know, when you take that hill, if anybody is going to stop you from doing it, they're not useful. they're not going to help you reach that goal. his goal is to help the president get an agenda pushed through congress. and that's been getting sidelined because of, you know, all these distractions that have come out. president trump wanting to talk to everybody that comes into the oval office. now he'll have somebody in general kelly who is in charge of the gates. you'll know who is and who is

not going into that oval office. who is speaking for the president and who is not. it's a new day. >> it is. and it's only tuesday. i'm going to talk to you again in a bit. molly hooper, thank you. >> thank you. president trump overruled his closest advisers including family members when it came to the initial response to an article about the meeting of don jr. and the russians. the washington post citing multiple sources with direct knowledge reports the misleading four-sentence statement was personally dictated by the president flying home from the g-20 summit in july. jared kushner's lawyers knew how damaging the e-mails could be, explicitly about hillary clinton and the campaign. hope hicks, the white house director of strategic communications, huddled with the lawyers and advocated for a more

transparent approach. kushner's team talked about sharing everything, including the contents of the e-mails with main stream news organization. hicks reportedly spoke to trump jr. about the strategy of transparency believing the complete story would eventually emerge. president trump apparently intervened. he directed the statement say that the meeting was unimportant. he wanted to it say that the meeting was initiated by the russian lawyer and was primarily about her pet issue. the president dictated the statement to hick, who served as a go-between with trump jr., who was not on the plane. according to people with knowledge of discussions, john dowd called the story fake news, incorrect, and misinformed. of no consequence. don jr.'s lawyers told the paper they have no evidence of the

theory. vice president pence is in georgia this morning. he appeared to give a meaningful change to the follow si slogan. take a look. >> in a word, i'm here to say america first does not mean america alone. >> the vice president also strongly condemned russia's continued occupation in georgia before discussing new sanctions against the kremlin. >> president trump has called on russia to cease its destib lidsing activities. in a sign of our commitment, very soon, president trump will sign legislation to codify the sanctions against russia. a bet relationship will require russia to reverse the actions that caused the sanctions to be enacted in the first place. >> it comes amid reports that russia is preparing for military drills in the summer. it includes sending 100,000 troops to to area.

reports say the u.s. state and defense departments have drafted proposals to send military weapons to ukraine. as that country continues battle russian-backed separatists. the u.s. is imposing sanctions on nicholas maduro. they announced the sanctions yesterday. it comes in response to sunday's election that will rewrite the nation's constitution. mcmaster kaudle it an outrageous seizure of power. americans are prohibited from doing business with him. mnunchin warned that anyone who paratakes of the new assembly will be exposed to future sanctions. his name is added to a list of leaders under sanctions. this morning, the wife of

meanwhile, sarah huckabee sanders made it clear all staff reports to general kelly. he sets out to shore up a white house infamous for its leaks. they have come. he was so displayed with the firing of fbi director comey, kelly called comey himself to say he was considering resigning. a report nbc news has not yet confirmed. attorneys for president trump are pushing back on a "washington post" story that says the president personally dictated don jr.'s official misleading response about his meeting with a russian attorney, saying it was about adoption, not the campaign. apart from being of no consequence, the characterizations are misinformed, inaccurate, and not pertinent. on july 11th "the new york times" reported that trump advisers had crafted it and the president signed off on it. manager sekulow denied at the time. >> the president didn't sign off of anything. he was coming back from the g

20. the statement released op saturday was released by donald trump jr. and -- i'm sure in consultation with his lawyers. the president wasn't involved. >> "the new york times" says he was involved with it. several people on the plane were, as well. you're disputing that account from "the new york times "? >> yes. >> as more information came out, including that people with histories in russian intelligence and finance had also taken part. sekulow denied the involvement of the president in the release. >> the president did not draft the response. the response came from donald trump jr. i'm sure in consultation with his lawyer. >> you were careful to say the president didn't draft the statement. that's not what i asked. dead he get a heads up? did he sign off on it? was he asked to red it? >> i can't say whether the president was told the statement was going to be coming from his son on that. i didn't have that conversation.

i want to be clear. the president was not involved in the drafting of the statement. >> joining us once again, capitol hill reporter for "the hill" molly hooper. help us understand if the president was in some way or shape involved, did he see the statement, have conversations about, draft it, what this means for bob mueller's investigation? >> well, i think it's clear there's not a lot to understand because you have all these contrary -- contradicting statements coming out about it. it leads to bob mooul mueller h to ask the question, is there something to be covered up? what is covered up? that's half the problem. according to "the washington post" sfr story, jarred kushner and hope hix wanted more transparency. in the story, donald trump is

portrayed to have wanted to highlight this was about -- it was an unimportant meeting about the russian adoption issue. this is one more facet for bob mueller to investigate. another reason it will be interesting to see how james comey, not james comey. excuse me general kelly. these "k" last names, two-syllable "k" last names. he'll play a big role in what the president sees. how he responds to things. and hopefully, you know, will button up what is going on with the president trying to act as his own attorney in the matter the. >> i want to push you on this. could there be real repercussions for the president if he was involved if the drafting of this statement in some way? >> the repercussions is it's just another line of inquiry for

bob mueller to follow. that sets the president up for what could be you know, what could be an inquiry with the committee, with the special committee looking into this. that is something you don't want the president to have to be involved with. it sounds like the president is treating this more as a p.r. problem as opposed to a legal one. it's a very serious legal problem. whether or not he believes russia meddled with the election or not, how he's responding to it and what he tells people you know behind closed doors, what he'll tell investigators. when he's ostensibly under oath will be a very important matter in clearing him. >> let's talk about the chain of command. sarah huckabee sanders saying yesterday everyone reports to john kelly as white house chief of staff. do we buy that jared kushner and

ivanka trump, daughter, are also going to report to kelly? how do you control that? considering that they're family here. >> well, that's a good question. they are family. how do you control it? there must have been some sort of verbal assurance that donald trump gave general kelly saying that, you know, all matters will go through the general. through kelly. and so, and so, yes, of course, you're going to have your dinner time conversations and what not. when it comes to white house business and policy matters, and policy matters is key here. those will go through kelly. and at the really is very important for this chain of command. >> as we know, though, often times, it's those dinner conversations, as we have seen with president trump, that a lot of things do get talked about. we'll have to see how that goes, as well. matt drudge has been in the president's corner mostly. but the man behind the website

power. let's turn to business. a megacable merger is set to happen. discovery has agreed to purchase scripps network. also in the deal, spotify. the streaming service is now twice as big as apple music. speaking of apple, the company is set to relts earnings after the bell today. cnbc's caroline roth joins us live from london. let's start with the discovery deal. >> a lot to cover today. discovery making the 11.9 billion deal to buy scripps networks interactive. both companies are struggling with the changes in the media space, such as declining ad revenue. the newly combined company will be worth some $22 billion. that's more than viacom, which is the next biggest tv company by market value.
