no reports of any injuries. good morning, everybody. it is friday, august 4th. we start with reaction this morning into the investigation into russia, the 2016 election and president trump. mueller impanelled a grand jury. the "washington post" now reporteding that mueller began to issue subpoenas from the washington based grand jury according to several lawyers involved in the case. nbc reporting in may of grand jury subpoenas into flynn that began before mueller was appointed.

and a former senior intelligence official with knowledge of the discussions told nbc news is looking into whether he has obtained records. a lawyer for president trump responded, quote, we favor anything that accelerates mr. mueller's work and remain committed to fully cooperating. he added that comey told the president at least three times he is not under investigation and we have heard nothing that would change that. the only concern at the white house is this be done fast and fairly. president trump spoke out about russia last night at his campaign rally in west virginia where he and his surrogates attacked the discussion of the story as made-up or irrelevant. take a listen. >> the same people pushing this crazy story about russia and its so crazy you have no idea, and

is a drug invested deny, and the republican governor of new hampshire said the president is wrong, and it's disappointing his characterization of the epidemic, and so maggi hassan said instead of insulting people in the throws of addiction, he needs to stem the tide of the crisis. and then one said president trump owes new hampshire an apology. >> what he said was an outrageous, and it's an insult to all of those people who have been dealing with this epidemic. >> and ahead of his rally in west virginia, president trump teased he had a big announcement for his rally, and before bringing west virginia's democratic governor, jim justice up to the podium for this. >> like it or not like it, but

having been registered with being a republican, and republican governors hold control in 34 states, the most states since 1922. before entering the white house president trump was highly critical of president obama for golfing and vacationing with his family in office but today it's donald trump who is leaving the white house for a extended 17-day vacation to his golf club, and that's twice as long as president obama's august vacation during his first year in office, and when it comes to total leisure times in the presidencies, they are not even close. president trump has had 53 days of leisure, and has played at least 33 rounds of golf to president obama's 15 days and 17 rounds of golf, and the entire west wing will be vacating the premises so they can replace a

about a failed bombing attack in australia as that country charged two men. they were involved allegedly in a plan to place an ied on a flight out of sidney last month. the explosive devices were sent via a cargo plane from turkey. one of the suspects asked his brother to take a piece of luggage on the flight, and it never made it past the check-in counter. let's take a turn and get a check on your weather. bonn bonnie schneider standing by. >> we are getting lightning in parts of ohio and indiana. 19 million americans facing potentially severe weather, and

that includes big cities like pittsburgh and cleveland. as the storms push to the east, we will see cooler and drier air work its way in behind it, which is great news because temperatures will get more comfortable as we get into part of next week. a lot of storms will impact areas in the northeast. we are looking at wet weather along the gulf coast, so if you are driving on i-10 towards new orleans, stormy weather is ahead, and we are looking at rain accumulating like pensacola. we could see several inches of rain before the day is over so be careful for areas that may flood. it's going to be hot especially into oregon, and most places in this part of the country don't have air-conditioning, and unfortunately, the onshore flow will start to make a difference as we go into next week, and we are looking at triple digit numbers into medford, look at that, 100 degrees on saturday and sunday, and heating up

welcome back, everybody. time for sports. the nfl pre-season started yesterday with dollar and the arizona cardinals facing each other, and neither team soot suited up their star players, and although they were there for practice. kurt warner and jerry jones were honored before the game. they first struck scoring two rushing touchdowns, and down 15-0, the cowboys responded with moore connecting on a pass, and d'errico made a fingertip catch

in the end zone and they finish the comeback win with cooper throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass. they clinch the victory, a 20-18 victory. now to other football, the united states soccer played in the tournament of nations. the u.s. was shocked in the opener losing to australian 1-0, and last night was a different story. in the 11th minute, they score to put the u.s. up. morgan adds another goal to go up 3-0, and the u.s. will go on to win finishing second place in the tournament. congratulations to them. in baseball a wild finish in the mets and rockies game in denver. the mets were down one when

♪ ♪ welcome back, everybody. it's the bottom of the hour. let's start with the morning's top stories. west virginia governor announced he is leaving the democratic party and joining the republicans and he made that announcement last night, and the republican leadership is at the highest level since 1922. and there are concerns the president would try and replace sessions, and the announcement was made with whom the president called out on twitter for voting against the republican health

care bill. john mccain is beginning his battle with brain cancer, and speaking during a facebook live event mccain says he expects to be back to work in the senate that goes against his doctor's wishes, and he's in good spirits and is in good health during his first week of radiation. and then the new developments and the ties between the trump campaign and russia. "the wall street journal" reporting mueller impanelled a grand jury to investigate moscow's role in the 2016 elections. >> the special counsel investigating russian election interference is entering a new phase, assembling a grand jury, it's a signal robert mueller's investigation, which has infuriated the president, will stretch on for months if not

democrat lawmakers will have to decide. they can continue their obsession with the russian hoax or they can serve the interests of the american people. >> the president is not thinking about firing bob mueller, so this is speculation that is out there and it's incorrect. >> would you advise him regardless of a grand jury that would be a bad idea? >> my job is to deal with what? i have to deal with the facts as we have them and the case as we have it, and the decisions the president makes on bob mueller are decisions i am not involved in and would not be involved in and the president has not raised with me -- >> why can't we get yes or no answers when you ask a question?

would you advise the president fire bob mueller? you can't get a yes or no there. even if the president wanted to fire bob mueller, wouldn't this news of the grand jury make that even more difficult, make it more suspect? >> certainly it implicates that bob mueller is trying to ramp up his investigation, so it would be more difficult. what nbc is reporting, john kelly, the new chief of staff said to jeff sessions your job is safe which is an indication they don't want to get rid of bob mueller, and it would be more difficult to do at this point. bringing in a new grand jury in washington brings in a whole new set of implications, right? >> let's put this grand jury thing in perspective. the former u.s. attorney that trump fired back in mercarch sa this -- the hyperventilating is

officially over. help us put this in perspective in regards to the grand jury. is this something that would be part of the normal process? >> it's expected this would happen. i don't think it would take a long time. one of the things we know is that bob mueller is trying to get through this relatively quickly, and the other thing we know is this is a compliance thing, and bob mueller is trying to get as much information and data out of anybody that has touched the trump campaign and his businesses so he will issue subpoenas to different financial institutions and banks and legal firms to get as much information as possible. these firms have special teams that manage subpoenas and deal with it all the time so i don't think it would take a long time and i think it's expected that he bring in a grand jury especially in washington where he has ties and close proximity to the white house and dealings between trump and comey. >> you don't think the total investigation will take a long

time? >> the investigation for sure, but the process of getting the data through the grand jury is not going to take a long time. >> are we going to hear from bob mueller at all? >> i don't think we will hear from bob mueller, he has been quiet and he likes to keep his head down and do things separately, and we might hear if there's something big or unusual. >> leaks are a big problem, right? the republicans want to figure out what is going on here. attorney general jeff sessions is holding a news conference today on the efforts to combat intelligence leaks. what are the leaks coming out of the white house, and a lot of people thought with kelly coming in that would help stomp it ourt, but how will they combat that? >> i think kelly coming in, it will help. john kelly is keeping strict rules as to who can see the president and who can't.

what would they do to combat it? having a more organized white house. one of the problems is the communication strategy was so fragmented. different people within the communications team were receiving conflicting and different information, and with a more organized communication team there would be less leaks and a unified message to come out of the white house. >> it's from the top down? >> yeah, and it's making sure the team is on the same page. >> sarah fisher, thank you. >> thank you. the "washington post" obtained and printed the phone calls with president trump and

mexico's president and president trump pushed his promise of a border wall saying it put both men in a political bind, and he urged pena nieto. he said believe it or not this is the least important thing we are talking about but politically it could be the most important thing to talk about. and trump said in earlier reports that the call with the australian prime minister, in a heated discussion on a refugee deal saying, quote, as far as i am concerned that is enough, malcolm, i have had it. i have been making these calls all day and this is the most unpleasant call all day, and putin was a pleasant call and this is ridiculous.

lawmakers are both sides of the aisle are denouncing the leaks of the transcripts, and mark warner is calling for an investigation, and warner expressed concern that this hurts the relationship with world leaders. >> to have people there that are leaking information that are talking to each of you to try and have their public policy implements because they are getting you to argue on their behalf, and we know it's happening, and these people should be fired and out of government and they are disloyal to our government and i hope that's what is going to happen. >> still ahead, the american people handing out a severely failing grade to congress. plus, mother nature already roasting parts of the northwestern u.s., now giving

advisory. and there's a weak ridge ucomin in, and a little bit of coastal areas will be in the mid-90s and medford into triple digits. the heat is building across nevada and places like idaho. the great lakes is where we are seeing stormy conditions, towards michigan and storms in indiana earlier this morning. 19 million people at risk for severe weather today and that will push further to the east. they are all watching out for strong storms that could produce hail and gusty winds. with the front pushing storms ahead there's cooler and drier air in behind it, and that's good news if you are looking for a breather from the heat. storms from the east as we work our way towards the weekend on

saturday. eventually the cooler air will come in, and it has been warm for the first start of august, and eventually as we go towards the weekend, as the front pushes east, you will feel it into indianapolis as well, and next week it will feel cooler with temperatures back in the upper 70s rather than the 80s and 90s. so relief is on the way, just a few more days. >> thanks, bonnie. to a story i talked about before the break, a majority of americans say lawmakers in congress are terrible when it comes to simply doing their job. 10% of those asked give congress a thumbs up while a whopping 84% give them a failing grade on how it handles its job, and when it comes to the way republicans are handling health care, and only 15% approve, while 80% say they
