good morning, everyone i'm i'm dara brown. 7:00 a.m. in the east. 4:00 a.m. in the west. here's what's happening. charlottesville. details on new investigations launched now into the deadly car a attack on protesters at the white nationalist rally. critics from both sides say president trump did not go far enough in condemnation. a look at how police moved onto the scene as events unfolded and protests grew widespre widespread. should they have been more proactive? a new report shows high profile names from the west wing

of the white house could be interviewed in the coming week. details next on msnbc live. we begin with breaking news in the aftermath of a rally in charlottesville, virginia. they are mourning the death of three people, including a 32-year-old woman struck when a car plowed into a group of counter protesters. a day of death with a graphic p image. the justice department announcing it has opened a civil rights investigation into the vehicular incident. some were taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. the driver of the car has been charged with second-degree murder. police say three others were arrested and charged in connection with the demonstrations. carrying concealed handguns to misdemeanor assault and battery. tom costello has more.

>> reporter: a horrifying scene in charlottesville as this car plowed into a crowd of people. the car backing up and dragging at least one person. >> it is barreling towards the protesters. i jumped away and screamed, car! >> reporter: it killed at least one person. brandon and chris took video at the moment of impact. he took aim at the crowd? >> he slowed down and then slammed into them very, very hard. >> reporter: it happened two hours after a planned protest unite the right was shut down by police at a nearby park. hundreds of white nationalists, some wearing what appeared to be uniforms, carrying weapons, confederate flags, and nazi symbols, clashed with counterprotesters. the rally originally to denounce

the removal of the statute of robert e. lee. >> we are being gassed now. the charlottesville police department is allowing people to come in here and gas us. they won't allow us into the event even though we had a permit. >> reporter: police stepped in. a massive presence, clearing the demonstrators from the area, declaring it unlawful assembly. the largest deployment of state police in nearly three decades. tensions began simmering when white nationalists carried torches ererily reminiscent of the '60s. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides. >> reporter: charlotte the the mayor weighed in saying he is brokenhearted and urged people

to go home. experts say that this gathering of white nationalists here has been the biggest gathering they have seen in decades. dara, back to you. >> tom costello, thank you. joining me is jim kavanaugh, he retired special agent in charge. great to have you this morning. police charlottesville are receiving criticism for a slow response to the violence. did they respond appropriately? >> i don't think that criticism is justified at all from watching everything yesterday. look atom's package today. the largest deployment of the virginia state police in three decades. i think people look at the deployment of tactical teams in these events and if they don't see them there, they think the police are not doing anything. at these klan rallies, we staged away a block away, half a block

away, warehouse, parking lot so you are not so visible to the crowd. you are not trying to amp up the event. you are trying to be able to respond to the event. and i think the state police did that effectively. if you look at this video, you see a lot of movement. you see people spitting on each other, spraying mace or pepper spray, throwing water bottles. this is not people shooting and knifing and ball bats. there was some violence, but only about eight people were hurt. then police stepped in and declared unlawful assembly. there is no easy answer for the police. but i don't think the criticism is is they weren't there in force and they didn't do enough. people can protest. they can't be arrested because they are haters, bigots and nazis and neo-nazis. you can't be arrested for that.

>> we are looking at the pictures from the rally yesterday. do you think the white nationalists were emboldened by the politics surrounding the rally? >> that's exactly on point. they have em boldened by what they see as power, connections to power in politicians, media outlets who support their views. this rally yo from night with the torches, this has driven them into a frenzy. this whole day. this whole thing has just emboldened them. this is their dream, dara. this is what they want. it started back in the near team from dylann roof, from mother emmanuel church. it is revolting, vulgar to us. but that's what the nazis dream of. they want that violence. violence gets them more recognition, members, attention,

power. and they see yesterday as a good day. remember, this rally was unite the route. in other words, the white hate that they see. >> right. >> and those groups, the klan, neo-nazis could ever get-together. we said for years if they ever get-together we would be be be in trouble. there was always in fighting and political back stabbing within their groups. >> jim, thank you so much. appreciate you joining us this morning. >> thanks, dara. well, the mother of the man accused of driving his car into the crowd of counter protesters said he was going to the rally. but when reporters caught up with her in ohio she had no idea what had happened. >> he ran his car into the crowd. >> running his car into a crowd of people? >> yes. >> did you tell hurt anybody? >> there was one fatality.

and some injured. >> i don't really talk to him about his political views. so i don't really understand what the rally was about. i didn't know it was white supremacists. i thought it had something to do with trump. trump is not a spreupremacist. he has an african-american friend. >> is this surprising to you? >> yeah. that he would run his car into a group of people for -- i'm really not clear on. >> the mother of suspect james alex fields jr. said she told him to be careful and to be peaceful. and we're learning moments ago that governor mcauliffe will visit two churches to speak about yesterday's violence. president is facing heavy backlash for failing to outright condemn the white nationalists

who organized the rally. hear part of trump's comments. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on on many sides, on many sides. it's been going on for a long time in our country. not donald trump. not barack obama. it's been going on for a long, long time. >> that's husband reaction on twitter. house speaker said this is a scurge. >> very important for the nation to hear poet us describe events in charlottesville for what they are. and cory gardener, we must call evil by its name. these were white supremacists and this was domestic terrorism.

here is joy reed from last night. >> the trump administration needs to remove from the federal government anyone who has had any association with the so-called alt-right movement which again is a terrorist movement. people are dying because of it. it is a threat to our national security. i've been a republican for 30 years. and we are not going to tolerate this in our party. >> let's bring in sarah westwood with the washington examiner and co author of shattered insight. thank you both for joining me this morning. is the white house clarifying what president trump meant when he said the violence was on many sides? >> so far we have not heard a clarification from the white house. i think there was a group of president trump's critics who were not going to be satisfied no matter what president trump said. that being saidin, it's pretty clear president trump missed a

good opportunity for hum to distance himself from this white nationalist group who claims him as their leader and inspiration. instead, he tried to spread the blame around. he tried to equivocate who was to blame here. they were quicker and more sharp in the condemnation of the white nationalist group that started this protest in the first place. you didn't see it except from the president and the person who the white nationalists were claiming as their leader. so that was i think troubling to a lot of people in both parties. and i think the president will probably have to come out with some sort of supplemental installment that clarifies he is directing this condemnation to the white nationalist group that started this event in the first place. >> jonathan, how telling is this reaction by republicans? does it signal to you a tipping point for the party and its

relationship to the president? >> there have been so many tipping points. but i think it is an important moment what we saw yesterday in charlottesville is not a partisan issue. what you saw was republicans running away from president trump, running away from the equivocation. what they saw was the president of the united states, the leader of their party, standing far foo close to white supremacists who claim them as their leader and for whom he has not stkapbtsedded himself as a leader over the course of time whether it's taking far too long to repudiate david duke. this isn't a partisan issue. republicans and democrats washington and across the country stand against this hatred and violence and call it for what it is, white supremacy. republicans in office want to make clear even if president

trump is going to straddle a line or perhaps stand with the supremacists, they do not see that as republican or conservative value but as something to really condemn. >> sarah, let me play what david duke said in the rally. listen. >> this represents awe turning point for the people who are determined to take our you country back. we're going to fulfill the promises of donald trump. that's what we believed in. that's why we voted for donald trump because he said he was going to take our country back. >> he later tweeted a response to president trump saying i recommend you take a good look in the mirror and remember it was white americans who put you in the presidency, not radical leftists. is there a sense how this will be with allegiance moving forward? >> president trump would have had a responsibility to denounce

the white nationalist movement. the fact that you have the leader of the ku klux klan, people marching explicitly in the name of donald trump puts more pressure on the white house to come out and put distance between the president on the united states and this nazi organization. but you didn't see that happen. and the sense inside the white house is i believe one of maybe a little bit of confusion of how to respond to this. maybe there is some or part of the white house that doesn't want to alien ate what they see as a ckopconstituenconstituency. because some of the weak support he has on capitol hill. republicans don't want to be associated with this kind of behavior from white nationalist groups. they have always tried to distance themselves from this radical fringe of the right. and president trump is not making that task any easier.

collusion with russia. and who would know more about any of the discussions that went on internally than the people who work for president trump he both on the campaign and also in the white house. reince priebus having been close to the campaign as orc chair map and someone who worked as chief of staff in the white house would certainly be in a position to help with potential information and may have an axe to tkpwraoeufpbd. if you're mueller, you want to see what you can get priebus to tell you. it could be the election or trump estates. a lot to look at there. no investigation will be full if mueller was not investigating people at the white house now or in the past.

>> paul manafort seems to be in some legal trouble. mueller appears to be looking at financial reactions to manafort's work in ukraine around the time of the ukrainian election in 2010. we are hearing mueller is requesting documents related to this 2011 lawsuit in which manafort was kwaoufd accused of embezzling money and running through it real estate in new york. it appears this is not related to russian meddling but it grew out of mueller looking at everyone involved's financial ties to see if they had ties to russia that could have led to collusion or tpoefrteddfostered relationships with russia. he appears to be in a good amount of trouble and the focus

for now appears to be on his record. >> john than, if we can turn to steve bannon. he is accused of leaking stories about h.r. mcmaster. what are you hearing about this? >> dara, the best way to get donald trump to be angry at someone else is to leak the idea that they are leaking against someone else. bannon gets tagged every time breitbart says something about one of his enemies. certainly there was a huge effort to push out h.r. mcmaster by right wing media. and it looks like people who support mcmaster are pushing back with the argument that steve bannon is undermining the trump presidency by puppeteering the right wing media. >> thank you. enjoy sunday.

new this morning, chairman general joseph dunford in south korea at a time of high tensions. kelly, it has been a week of threats between president trump and kim jong-un. is general dunford there to calm nerves? >> reporter: hi. good morning, dara. the pentagon said this trip was long planned. of course given what's happened the last several days, the war of words is likely that calming nerves will be added to the agenda when general dunford meets with top officials from south korea throughout the day tomorrow. across asia, really, leaders are just sort of nervously waiting to see what north korea will do next and how the u.s. will

respond. north korea has said they will have these plans in place to launch missiles towards guam, landing in the waters off guam mid month. that is just a couple of days away. north korea is notorious for making these extreme threats and doing nothing. the question now, will 33-year-old kim jong-un actually act on this threat or will he back down? that's the big question. 140 some thousand americans live in this country. there are 28,000 military troops as well. and we talked to an american family over the weekend about how they are feeling about all of this tension. they essentially told us, look, we have lived with these threats from north korea for years now. we are used to them. what we are not used to is hearing the same kind of rhetoric from our president. that leads to the uncertainty and a bit of worry.
