good morning. it's friday, august 18th. well, we start with a series of suspected terror attacks in spain and a warning that some viewers may find the following footage disturbing. at least 13 people are dead and more than 1 00 injured. several seriously. now, after a person drove a rental van through a crowded pedestrian plaza in the heart of barcelona, spain's second largest city, three people have been detained relating to that attack, although police say none of them are the driver. who remains at large. the van reportedly zigzagged down the popular plaza for several hundred yards before finally stopping near a metro station. one witness said the van was "doing movements to hit as many people as possible." isis has now claimed responsibility, but as is often the case, has offered no proof, and nbc news cannot independently verify that claim.
2:02 am
meanwhile, one person was killed and several more injured wednesday night following an explosion in the town about 125 miles south of barcelona, and police say those involved are directly reeld to the barcelona terror attack. about 70 miles southwest of barcelo barcelona, police are working on the hypothesis that a thwarted terror attack yesterday is also reeld to the attack in barcelona and that explosion. police have revealed little about what happened except that the five alleged terrorists who were wearing fake suicide belts were killed by police in a shoot-out. the devices were later detonated by police in controlled explosions. six civilians were injured. two seriously. one police officer suffered minor injuries. joining us now live from barcelona, nbc news correspondent claudia. great to have you with us this morning. authorities say they believe all of these scenes are related. what's the latest on the investigation? >> well, the latest we heard you
2:03 am
mentioning to that intro is that the police believes that the vests that were found on the bodies of the five terrorists, they shot down yesterday in the town of camblis. this is southwest of barcelona, where the second terror attack was carried out were fake. now, that is a bit of a relief if you can call it that because that means that if there is, of course, the another terrorist attack because there is still a man on the run, the driver of the van. the fact that this was an organization, we don't know that yet, they don't have access to the explosive that will make that threat a little less menacing. i am on the stage of some of the worst terrorist -- one of the worst terrorist attacks in spanish history that took place here only 24 hours ago. less than 24 hours ago. now it is filled with thousands

of people. this is a great sign of defiance. >> thank you. let's talk about the security aspect. joining us now over the phone msnbc terrorism analyst and executive director of the terror asymmetric project, malcolm nance. thank you for joining us. >> this is the sixth deadliest terror attack in the past 13 months, and it seems like we ask this question over and over again, malcolm, but is there any way of preventing these sort of high impact, low planning attacks really that seems like have been happening over and over again for the last few years? >> well, unfortunately, the easiest way to deter these attacks is to have great intelligence on the terrorists. spain is a country which has an excellent counterterrorism force in la guardia.
2:05 am
they actualliville since 2004 when they had the madrid bombing attack had no incidents of terrorism and had arrested over 700 al qaeda and isis sympathizers. when you are talking about using a vehicle as a weapon, there's almost no deterrent to that other than to find the plot out in advance and intercept the driver before he gets to his target, but that could be just about anywhere. >> malcolm, let me ask you about president trump's reaction to this. i know that he initially condemned the attack on twitter, but then he pivoted and promoted a false claim about general and how he supposedly dealt with what he called islamic radical terror. how is this all going down in washington, especially in the wake or the lack of comments regarding charlottesville from the president? >> well, in fact, you know, tweets like that, which are based on a myth and are factu factually wrong, historically wrong, only inflame the muslim

world and actually insult the people who we're assisting, which is the other 1.6 billion muslims who reject all of these attacks by isis and al qaeda. in the counterterrorism world we find it more difficult to process that when you have a president who is attacking something, ing which is, you know -- which is not true using this mythology. at the same time we're trying to get cooperation from countries like morocco, tunisia, algeria where some of the citizens were involved in this attack and then try to work through that with a greater intelligence effort that requires the muslim world to feed into it. in washington it's not playing very well at all in the intelligence world. >> malcolm, thank you very much for that. a lot of people have been making the comparison about how quick he was to condemn this as a terror attack and then how slow he was after the charlottesville attack to say he wanted to wait for the facts. >> it doesn't bode well.

people of this country also don't have confidence in their president. they can't trust him when something like this happens as well. the president began his day thursday by targeting a senator in his own party and defending confederate monuments as part of american history. now he is getting tough straight talk from a powerful senator who he vetted for vice president and later considered for secretary of state. senator bob corker, the chairman of the foreign relations committee told the chattanooga rotary club that despite his good relationship with the president, he could no longer ignore the elephant in the room. dismayed by the daily distractions, he later said to reporters that there needs to be "some radical changes in the way trump conducts himself." take a listen. >> the president has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to demonstrate in order to be successful. more republicans are speaking in unusually blunt

odds with centrists in his own party, including that party's leadership. what's the calculus for people like bob corker and jeff flake to now openly question the president? do you think that there is a sense that more will follow from within the republican party? >> my word, if i was president trump, i would be getting a schedule of all the senators in the republican party and when they speak to rotary clubs because wasn't it last week that we were talking about mitch mcconnell talking to his rotary club calling the president out? you know, the calculus, it's interesting. you know, this issue has caused a lot of problems for republicans back home. they're hearing about it as well. when you see cents riss and conservatives for that fact come out and speak about the president and the way he is running things, you know, that's very telling. the other thing to note is that senator cork er, you know, was

considered for vice president, secretary of state. he actually took action as did the house and the senate, republican house and the senate, bipartisan on that matter, you know, to move a russian sanctions bill that the president really did not want to sign. in fact, was forced into signing because there was pretty much, you know, veto-proof majority. as we see more action, bipartisan votes like that, that's more telling about what's going on in the conference as opposed to just what they're saying. >> what's the likelihood then censure the president come this fall? >> well, the republicans are still in charge. >> there's been talk of it, obviously. >> the democrats are pushing that, and i think that it would be the house subpoena for
