good morning. i'm page hopkins in new york at msnbc world headquarters. it's day 213 of the trump administration. the new reality at the white house after steve bannon's departure, could it tip the president toward the main stream. day in protest in cities across the country, the president's response to the turnout and whether he's trying to straddle the fence on racism. remembering dick gregory. how he used humor to spread the message of social justice. we begin with the trump

administration and the massive protesters against far right groups. here's what the secretary of affairs said on the fate of confederate monuments last night. >> this has been an issue for us for quite sometime since we have confederate cemeteriries as part of the va. we can see from events from this week that words matter and you have to respect people's opinion. so we've been careful respecting the historic aspects and the way these monuments make people feel and finding that balance is what we're seeing in the rest of the country. >> trump took to twit aerz the boston protest was looking up. police are looking tough and smart. thank you. in another one, i want to applaud the many protesters in boston who are speak out against mist bigotry and hate.
4:02 am
steve my nugs is responding to his classmates who said he didn't distance him self from trump. >> while i fine it hard to believe i should have to defend myself on this, or the president, there is no that the president in no way, shape or form believes that the neo-nazi and other hate groups who endorse. -- which cites its values and commitments to diversity in its decision to abandon p club. >> president trump commented on the debarture of steve bannon as his chief strategyist. kelly o'donnell as the latest. >> reporter: a friend now
4:03 am
unpredictable and on the outside. the president tweeted his first comments on friday's dismissal of steve bannon. steve bannon will be a tough and smart new voice at "breitbart" news, maybe even better than ever before. bannon a hard nosed nationalist moved on by moving back to the conservative media outlet "breitbart." where he made his intentions clear telling the weekly standard i feel jacked up, now i'm free. i have got my hands on my weapo weapons. i'm going to crush the opposition, opposition that includes other white house advisors. >> i think his enemies are well known and they include any establishment republicans, any establishment anything, any main stream media outlets and if anything he'll have more money and a more liberated platform
4:04 am
outside the government. >> reporter: he's been a critic who argues he emboldens white nationalist. in a surprise move, the white house is distancing itself from its own critics and a 40 year cultural tradition. the kennedy center honors. presidents of both parties have long been there to celebrate artistic achievements but not this year. the president and first lady have decided not to participate to allow the honorees to celebrate without any political distraction. >> there was some controversy around the honors after at least two of the honorees, lifetime achievement award winners, said they would not attend the traditional white house reception. so the decision not to be involved at all pre-empts further issues ahead of the event. >> let's bring in our panel now.
4:05 am
jonathan, let's start with you in the aftermath of the counter protest in boston, president trump on one hand praising many of the protesters and then on the other calling them antipolice ago itators. aren't we seeing a repeat to charlottesville? >> yes, but sort of in the reverse order where the most recent thing he has said has been pretty clearly on the side of the peaceful demonstrators. i think a lot of people look at what the president has done over the course and time and decided that you can't be 50% on where you stand with nazis. that's a 100% question. >> i agree. >> good point. >> i think people who support the neo-nazi and white supremacists and people who oppose them feel like the president has waved his flag.
4:06 am
all that said i think he's in a better place when he is condemning nazis and praising peaceful protesters. >> he heightened it again to praise steve bannon saying he'll be a tough new voice. maybe more specifically, do you think general kelly has any affect on this and the allegiance these groups have to trump. >> we've seen a strong condemnation from congressional members and members of the republican party distancing themselves from the kkk and neo-nazis and what have you. but based on the reporting since friday that i've done on the ousting of steve bannon this is someone who's going to shape politics. politically in activating the grass roots for several years to come. he appeared on the "breitbart"
4:07 am
news editorial on friday where he told his staff they have to be, quote, vanguards of a new republican. >> paul ryan has not spoken directly with president trump i'm told since tuesday. so following that press conference in new york city, the president and the speaker of the house, both in the same party, both on the eve of what's going to be a divisive september have not spoken. >> i want to the talk about the charities canceling events at mar-a-lago. one member told "the washington post" the hay tret, vi troll and anti-semitic and racist views are repugnant and repulsive and anyone who would show support for them by saying there are
4:08 am
good people among them is not worthy of my patronage or that of my foundation. do you think the president will reset the message because it's hurting his business. >> that might be the one thing to get -- >> his akill''s heal. >> yes. if a politician holds on to a view beyond which is not palatable it's because of a deeply held conviction but we know with president trump it's trump enterprises should succeed. i think he cares about crowd sooid size, if you look at the pictures and video from boston yesterday a small group of white nationalist and a large group, tens of thousands, perhaps, of counter protesters so i think all of this information is coming to him and it may be part
4:09 am
of the reason we saw that second set of tweets from him yesterday. >> sources told your colleagues that removing steve bannon could weaken the president's ability to translate his ideas to policy. explain that since they're saying president trump had similar views since long before steve bannon joined the campaign. >> that's where these stories start to matter because of the policy implication. republicans got control of the house and senate and white house because americans voted they wanted to lower premiums and taxes. polls suggest that the american public have rebounded in terms of their support of obamacare. but in november that was a big part of the reason that president trump was able to win states tha like pennsylvania, michigan, ohio and others. that said, reince priebus was brought in bring in a legislative agenda. health care did not pass, now
4:10 am
you look forward and they want to turn to tax reform. tax reform is still hanging in the balance. i think when we can talk about the grass roots of the sbart what have you, i think the end of the day. this really tran skrends political spectrum. in the sense this is coming down globalist versus nationalist. steve bannon is a nationalist type of policy. that matters when you talk about global trade and lowering the corporate tax rate. >> stick around i want to ask you about an op-ed. the message boston wanted the rest of the country to hear. we need to tell you about the passing of social right active dick gregory.

he looked really injured. jar jared was kind and tolerant and would never hurt anybody. so for this type of action to take his life, it's horrible. it's just senseless. i can't make any sense of it. >> reporter: so as memorials continue to grow here, police are also trying to figure out this terror cell and exactly who may have been involved in it and who may have led it. they are looking now at an i mom who has been missing. they're looking into his apartment and the possibility that he may have been one of the people killed in the explosion in the bomb-making factory. they say they have two bodies in there they're trying to identify them. but trying to put the pieces together as they say they
