welcome back, everybody. it is the bottom of the hour. let's start with the morning's top stories. president trump set to address the nation tonight where he will lay out the path forward for the war in afghanistan. the speech comes after a series of meetings at camp david among the president's top advisers.
2:30 am
the primary option under consideration includes sending thousands more troops to train and advise afghan forces and also to bolster counterterrorism operations. the u.s. and south korea have kicked off their annual war games. the 11-day training involves more than 17,000 u.s. soldiers in largely computer simulated drills. ahead of those exercises, north korea state media yesterday called this year's games a reckless move that could trigger the uncontrollable phase of nuclear war. and the driver in the attack in barcelona is a 22-year-old moroccan. an american is confirmed to be among the 14 people killed in the attack. jared tucker was there celebrating his first wedding anniversary. we want to turn back to the story overseas we've been reporting on. crews in the waters of the south china sea are searching for ten navy sailors who are missing after a missile destroyer

these ships have incredible navigation technology on board. that's what the seventh fleet is going to be looking at. this is the second major incident that the seventh fleet has had in less than two months. you'll remember a ship less than two months ago the uss fitzgerald also had a collision. seven u.s. sailors died in that collision. the u.s. navy was found to be at fault. they relieved the commanding officer of that ship. certainly there will be an extensive investigation when it comes to the uss john mccain. also worth mentioning, the name sake of uss john mccain named for the senator's father and grandfather both admirals in the u.s. navy. >> cal, what are you hearing from the white house on this? >> reporter: so nothing official from the white house. not a surprise yet. i will tell you president trump landed late last night from his vacation. there's a lot of talk about a comment he may have made on camera where he said on the sly, that's a shame. it was picked up by one of only

try listerine® zero alcohol™. all right. welcome back, everyone. let's get a quick check on your weather now with bill karins. everyone wants to know what is it looking out there now with the total eclipse? >> what are they going to see? many areas are going to be fantastic. of course there's going to be some exception. it goes from coast to coast. some people will suffer. we're looking at where it's raining or the thunderstorms is. but today it's different. we want to look at the clouds. showing white on this map. a complex of clouds in iowa now drifts to the great lakes. some will dissipate because those are thunderstorms. they kind of die off and dissipate during the day. then reform this afternoon. we're okay in the southeast. but there's a hint of cloud cover on the carolina coastline. that's going to be an area of concern. then the moisture from texas to kansas. now towards missouri. that's going to be a problem. watching kansas city closely. here's the forecast. this is for early this afternoon. the path of totality shown in blue here.
2:43 am
but of course we still have great viewing in areas like chicago today too. there's a lot of cloud cover here through south dakota, minnesota, central illinois, northern indiana. there's the clouds and showers right along the southeast coast. and there's some more of that moisture in areas of kansas. you will notice there's some fantastic area in a few spots. let's get to the path of totality. that's where millions of people have converged. it's going to be curious to see what the traffic jams will be like in these places where the iffy weather. idaho is looking fantastic. wyoming to casper, all fantastic party into early afternoon. then interesting in kansas city. mostly cloudy skies. 1:08 p.m. is when you're going to have your peak totality. hopefully you'll see it. then the eclipse through 2:45 in the afternoon is close to the totality in south carolina. there's the showers on the coast. we did hint and tease up we're going to do this again in seven years from now. but that path of totality goes

through texas right through illinois. through cleveland, buffalo, northern portions of new york and vermont and northern maine. that's only seven years from now. save those glasses if you were lucky enough to find them. not a lot of people were. the other forecast concerns today are going to be severe storms. late in the afternoon, after the eclipse the storms will pop up in iowa and southern illinois. we have about 20 million people in risk of severe storms today from iowa to dubuque and chicago. that's when everyone's done with the eclipse and coming home and driving on the highways throughout this area. even a couple tornadoes are possible. so we'll have to watch that. and then into tomorrow, that severe weather shifts into ohio and western portions of pennsylvania. it's interesting. usually we get thunderstorms and storm chasers that are converging and it gets crowded around the storms. everyone's probably going to see showers and storms. they're going to get in their cars and try to drive to get there. >> hold on. i'm just making my hotel reservations for buffalo, 2024.
