4:00 pm
candidate rally in phoenix. the very month he first began running for president two years ago. he is back there tonight and we'll see if he revisits the greatest or most infamous hits. that's it for "the beat." "hardball" with chris matthews starts right now. in unity there is trump? let's play "hardball." good evening. i'm chris matthews in washington. the prince of division is pitching a message of unity. that's right, prurm addressed the country to outline his new afghanistan policy. it began with a call for the country to unify and catch this, to heal. >> when one part of america hurts, we all hurt.
4:01 pm
when one citizen suffers an injustice, we all suffer together. loyalty to our nation demands loyalty to one another. when we open our hearts to patriotism, there's no room for prejudice no, place for bigotry and no tolerance for hate. we cannot remain a force for peace in the world if we are not at peace with each other. let us find the courage to heal our divisions within. but candidate trump stoked those divisions. he ran as a man who divided the conquered. >> why doesn't he show his birth certificate? i wish he would. i think it is a terrible thing that's hanging over him. when mexico sends their people, they're not sending their best. they're bringing crime, they're bringing drugs, they're rapists
4:02 pm
and some i assume are good people. >> do you believe as punishment? >> yeah. >> donald j. trump is calling for a complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states. >> had hillary clinton would rather provide a job to a refugee from overseas than to give that job to unemployed african-american youth in cities like detroit, who have become refugees in their own country. >> president trump has spent his first seven months in office as president, attacking as are liars and sleazes. just last week he called some of the people marching with nazis and white supremacists fine people. >> it would be nice to have democrat support. but really, they're obstruction. is. they have no ideas.
4:03 pm
they have no thought process. all they want to do is obstruct government and obstruct, period. >> they're trying to treat you out of the leadership you want with a fake story that is demeaning to all of us. what the prosecutors should be looking at are hillary clinton's 33,000 deleted e-mails. >> i think there's blame on both sides. you look at both sides. i think there's blame on both sides. you had people that were very fine people. on both sides. >> tonight the president set to speak at a rally in phoenix. the site of some of his most raucous speeches. the atlantic white house correspondent, rosie gray, and for the "boston globe," i want to start with you. you've been on the show many times and i think you and i look

other presidents is he hasn't shown a lot of willingness to reach out beyond his base. >> what's if rationale? why not grow? >> part of it is is his power drives from his base. part of why republicans are still wary about creating distance between themselves and him is he does have a lot of support in the republican base. >> why doesn't he grow? addition is better than subtraction. we all grew up, i did, you did too, reagan started with a core on the hard right. then he won the battle on the republican party. then he got big enough to bring in the democrats and the party vote it's doable if you come from the hard right. why doesn't he build? >> with a democratic congress for most of it is --
4:06 pm
>> that's when we had very -- >> the truth is that a year ago many of us were making the kind of comment you made earlier. it seemed like strategy for electoral suicide to divide the country the way he did with his rhetoric. and yet he won. that has succeeded for him his entire career. both in business and now in politics. leaving aside the moral issue, there's a real question on a narrow political basis whether it is not the smart thing to continue to play to his base. it is who he knows and what he's good at. >> i interviewed him when he said women should be punished for abortion. they all pulled back. but his instinct was, i'm making
4:07 pm
my stand with pro-choice women. he thought of that at the moment. what kind of a guy says i'll unite the country by punishing women for abortion. i'm not sure what punishment ned mind. >> his instinct is to lash out, a punitive attitude toward people. i think after charlottesville we saw him reversing, talking about many sides being to blal for the violence. they got him to walk it down. and then the trump tower conference, they got him to go back. >> his only tolerance has been toward the supremacists. >> maybe this is what he believes.
4:08 pm

4:09 pm
initiated from his new jersey golf club, the president accused mr. mcconnell. this very well written, very nobly written. this is amazing that they are yelling back and forth at each other. even i can be accused of having chutzpa. he was fighting with the president because the president had ticked him off. he doesn't seem to have unity at the top. >> if you follow trump's business career, things how he behaved with all of his business partners. it is why so many people in new york, in the real estate industry, refused to have anything to do with it.
4:10 pm
is t and tei have to say as a never trump republican, they assumed he would be an empty vessel into which they could pour the sweet wine of whatever legislation they wanted to pass. it turns out the character of the president, he is decisive is that he has ideas of his own and he won't just go i know what the paul ryan republicans. i think what they're getting is richly deserved. >> are you to the right or left of trump? can you give me a position? is that too difficult to answer? are you to his right or left? i can't tell. >> i think i'm to his left. it's hard to say with trump

4:12 pm
>> the president specifically denounced white supremacists, neo-nazis and the kkk repeatedly. >> i know why he picked him vp. he gives him a churchy overlay. anyway, ambassador nicki haley was asked about the response to charlottesville. >> were you shocked, do you believe the president did that when he needed to last week in. >> well, aid personal conversation with the president and i will leave it at that. but i will tell you there is no room for hate. this guy needs to learn from and you then she was smart by saying i had a personal conversation with him. it was about this and i'll leave it at that. she didn't leave it at that. she said she had a personal
