it is a beautiful day to be a global citizen to celebrate the great work that's being done to fight extreme poverty and hear from some of the biggest names in music. welcome to the 2017 global citizen festival. i am joy reed. >> i'm chris haze. over the next seven hours we'll be bringing you performances by green day,el chain smokers and more. theen there's stevey. >> yes. but today's festival is not just about the acts. it's also about the actions and the fans. they are want just spectators. they are engaged citizens who are taking part in the effort to eradicate extreme poverty by the year 2030. global citizen has mobilized millions across the world to compel their leaders to take part in this urgent call to action. >> it can be as simple as e-mails or tweets or phone calls, but the impact has been profound. nearly 13 million actions have been taken resulting in $30 billion worth of prejudiced commitments. this year the activism is

centered on key issues including women's economic kpourment, food and security, water and sanitation and the fight against hiv aides and others. >> so what do we know about this army of so-called global citizens and what did they do to get here? our very own savannah sellers host of the hit snapchat show is hanging out with these foot soldiers here today. >> that's right i'm out here with global sit sfwlens who have taken all times of actions to get here today. the gates just opened up. it's already filling up. i just met nancy here. and nancy took some incredible actions. tell me what you to to get your tickets here. >> so as a global citizen we did various actions. we tweeted and called politicians and senators and we alternatives signed lots of petitions about various global events going on like sanitation, girls education, et cetera, poverty also. >> and that's how you got here today. it's not about buying a ticket to this event. it's about taking those actions

thank you for being here. >> thank you, joy. thank you, chris. >> so explain to people that are just checking this out for the first time, how would you describe what zbloeb alcitizen is and does. >> it has this big dream that by 2030 we're going to end extreme poverty. the only way we're going to achieve that is through building a movement of tense of millions of citizens all around the world who call on world leaders to make not just tense of millions of dollars but multibillion dollar commitments. and thanks to the movement of global citizens here today and the last six years they've already secured over $30 billion in new commitments that will affect the lives of close to a billion people by 20/20. so this is the momentum is well and truly behind this movement and other goal is to keep that momentum to ensure that the united nation's sustainable dwopt goals are a reality. >> so a little birdie tells me a night you spent in manila has

some resonance for why you did this work. >> when i was 12 years old i started fund-raising. i was born in australia and i was enthusiastic. when i was 14 world vision sent me to the philippines to see their work firsthand and there was one night that changed my life forever. we were taken on to a slum this whole community built over a rub beneficiary dumpment the children run after the garbage trucks every single day and that night i was placed in the care of a kid my own age. and when it came time to go to sleep that night we literally lay down on this concrete slab with myself, sunny boy and his whole family with the smell of rub beneficiary all around us and cockroaches crawling over us and i just lay that night thinking to myself it's pure chance that i was born here and he was born there. our roles could have very easily been reversed in life and so i made a resolution to myself that night, i said i'm going to commit my life to this. so i went to live in india the next year and i decided from

that point on this is going to be my life's mission. >> when you say these commitments, you do this here during the week. then you have the world leaders in town at the u.n. general assembly. give me an example of those commitments of the what do those mean? >> let me give you one example. this is one i'm really excited about tonight. so over the last couple months i've been working with rihanna to try to transform global education. 264 million kids are currently out of school. so a couple of months ago with rihanna we started tweeting with global citizens at mack ron encouraging him to mack a big commitment for global education. he said okay come and meet with me. so a few months ago we went with her manager and we sat down with the president and we said auto so you're going to respond to our call. he said i will and tonight at this fest i feel he's going to make a houj announcement that's going to blow everyone away. >> we'll be checking in throughout the day. coming up, john mel lesson camp

be an amazing celebration of global activism and artry. >> the legendary john mellencamp has been entertaining crowds for decades. he also uses his music for the greater good. >> he is one of the founding members of farm aid, an annual concert that much like global citizen creates a platform for change. its cause, raising money for family farmers since 1985. he sat down with "morning joe's" own joe scarborough to discuss the vision behind farm aid and the current state of u.s.

♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> i see target. >> right. >> talk about the song. what ip spider you specifically? >> i've been writing about race relationships in this country since the beginning of my career. originally when i wrote that song called jack and diane, jack was black in the song but i ended up changing it at the end. so it's something that, you know, i grew up singing in a soul band with half the guys white and half the guys african-american. and this was in the 60s. it taught me very early, you know. it was like wow, black people

really do have a more difficult life than i do. >> so black lives matter, who we trying to kid? they're just easy targets, never mattered, never did. ♪ crosses burning, such a long time ago ♪ 400 years and we still won't let it go ♪ so let it be damned easy targets too. we're all created equal, equally me and you ♪ >> who inspired you to really get involved and help launch farm aid? >> well, farm aid was, you know, like anything else was a total my introduction to willy was a total, you know, accident. a friend of mine actually was

playing golf with willie and he said have you heard mellencamp's new record? and he said no. he goes, it's about the small american farmer and there's a bunch of songs on there about that. and i mean, within five minutes i answered the phone and it was like, hey, it's lil lee nelson. do you want to help me do farm aid and a day later i got a call from kneel young and he said so i guess we're doing this farm aid. >> are you surprised it's still going strong? >> no. i hate that it's still going strong because, you know, we were so naive at the time, joe, that we thought, well, we'll do this concert and it will bring attention to it and the government will go, wow, we really do, you know -- the farmer feeds the people and, you know, people want good, clean food, and they'll see, you know, the error in their law making ways ♪ children crying under the

timekeeper's. this war on easy targets looks like we've just begun. ♪ >> a lot of your fans are people who in 2008 voted for barak obama and even turned indiana blue. in 2016 they voted for donald trump. does it concern you -- how did that happen? >> well, for one thing, i trust no politicians, none. democrat, republican, independent. they all have an agenda and we

don't know what that agenda is. of course, we all know that the agenda is to get re-elected. it seems to me to be wrong. >> you've gotten more concerned, though, haven't you, over the past six, eight months by what you've seen? >> no. >> really? so this is not -- >> no. >> this is not as much of a shock to you as it is to other people? >> oh, it's a shock. >> so are you going to stay involved, though, politically? do you still feel like it's worth the fight? have you given up? >> no, i never give up. >> ♪ easy targets along the avenue. living in sucker town, just me and you ♪ behind the bars to keep us apart, easy targets, this country is broken heart

2017 global citizen festival. i'm here with the human nears. you guys, this is a big gig. 60,000 people. everything is about eradicating global poverty out there. what made you guys want to come and do this show? >> for one, it's one of the few festivals that you can't pay to get in. you have to do this good deed. i think it's unique in the sense that you can't really buy your way in. you have to good deed your way in. >> is this something you've ever done, anything like this before, and what do you expect. >> we've played shows for causes and sfuf, but never on this global scale. this is definitely our first time on this massive scale. and the band was presented some statistics about water, unscreen sanitation, so this -- we've never done anything like this on this big of a scale. >> and particularly now more than ever with the hurricanes in the caribbean, with the earthquake in mexico, when you watch the news, is it something like you feel like you can

making difference. >> i think it's all about small steps. and this is one of the ways we can start instead of trying to take it all on once. you have this organization -- they've already got 30 billion committed through 2030 and that's just the start. does that's real money from real governments and countries. i think joining up with something like this that's so organized, it's a good way to start. >> i'm looking forward to seeing you guys out there. nice to meet both of you and have a great show. i'm going to throw it back to savannah sellers who is out there someone. savannah. >> water station -- >> i think we have a little microphone issue, but one of the things she was talking about is one of the issues global citizen is tackling this year is drinking water. and i think we have her back. >> hi there. >> what's the deal with the drinking water situation here at this concert? >> comcast nbc universal have

so i'm excited to be here. >> do you think that this is a time when it's especially important that people who have platforms are using them for positive causes like this? >> no question. i mean, social media drives so much. the internet drives so much. digital communication drives so much. if you have a voice, it's not just about contributing domestically. it's a global voice and so when you have that opportunity, you have to take it. >> you're the owner of the dallas mafr riks. crazy thing happened the last 24 hours. the president attacks football players who kneel during the anthem. he disininvites steph curry. lebron james tweets back at the president and calls him a bum. >> one, you know the president is a frustrated jock, so that's a given. two, i'm all for civil disobedience. doesn't matter what industry you're in, you have a voice. you're an american citizen. if the president wants to come out and say what he wants to say, more power to him. if steph curry wants to say what he wants to say, more power.

lebron, that's civil disobedience, right. we're not hitting anybody, shooting anybody. it's free speech. that's who we are, right. and the fact that now the president has opened the door for all of us to engage with him, he opened that door. he might not like what walks through there, but the door is open, let's say what's on our mind. >> we were talking with hugh evans earlier. they actually went right to the president of france, and actually got a result. do you think that flattening out of that communication are ordinary citizens can actually get to and communicate to somebody like the president of the united states, does that actually help push leaders into action? >> oh, yeah. especially when you have rabbit ears and you're paying attention to everything around you. you know he's paying attention for better or worse, right. you know, in this particular -- in normal cases a ceo of a country, you want them working on the big issues in this case i think it's better he's looking and talking on social media instead of trying to screw some other things up. >> do you think there's a dynamic change with social media

in terms of how p connected people do feel to things that are happening in other parts of the war? i just noticed that during the egyptian revolution we were watching it in this crazy way -- >> right. whether it's iraq but there's also a lot of unintended consequences, right. we saw what happened with the ar an spring and it looked like it was going to be something special and it went the other way. we're in one decade of all this of social societal thing. there's going to be a learning curve and we're going to have to adapt and that's what we're doing right now. >> mark cuban. >> thanks for having me, guys. >> thank you very much. always great to see you. >> let's see what you have to say on twitter. let's hear more about global citizen founder hugh evans and his fascinating story, some of which you heard at the top of the hour. it's hard to believe that just five years ago he and his team were struggling to turn their vision into a reality. hugh evans. >> there hadn't been a concert

on a saturday in central park since simon and gar funk elback in 1981 and i think bone joe vee a few days later. >> i don't think people realized how quickly that happened and how likely failure was. >> new york city is expensive, you know, and no doubt about it. and trying to pull it off in the first year, i didn't know know how we ended up doing it to be honest because we had to raise so much money. >> what hugh and the team at global citizens was trying to accomplish was nothing short of extraordinary. it was rough. there were definitely some sleepless nights. >> so to say that i was terrified was an understatement. i was absolutely terrified and it's a very powerful motivator. >> july 2012, two and a half months after the event we still needed to raise more money. we hadn't booked all the talent, but we thought we had the too fighters and we got a call from

the sponsors and they said look, we have this problem. we said -- the contract is not signed. i'm sorry, we're going to have to pull out. >> it just felt like we had reached this press i miss where nothing was going to happen from here. >> we were down to the final days, you know, because we couldn't as an organization, we couldn't take a risk in, you know, not having enough money in the bank to pull it off. >> and i remember so vividly one night just praying. i was like god, just please bless us with this event. and the next day we woke up and sum ner red stone invited us to come to his house. >> and sum ner red stone came through in the final hours with a commitment. >> no kidding. he wrote a check for $1.5 million on the spot. >> the bravest thing i've seen hugh do was stair down eight to ten weeks out of the very first global citizen festival a sponsor who had just fallen over, an artist bill that wasn't complete and have him say we can

still do this, because every reasonable and rational person around him said no, you can't. you don't have the money. you don't have the time. you don't have the expertise, and you don't have the performers to be able to pull off a 60,000 person event in a city that you've only just moved to. and he said yes, i do. >> to see the whole episode of the brave ones go to the youtube page of cnbc international. >> all right. well, what does it take to be a global citizen? let's go to jacob soeb or off for the look at the dna much a global citizen. >> to get 60,000 people out to the great lawn in central park all with the goal of having or eliminating extreme poverty, i should say by 2030. these are some of those people. it's an incredible thing. they have come from all over new york city, all over the country, probably all over the worl to be here. but what is in their genetic make up? what makes them want to be a

part of something bigger than themselves? take a look at this. >> you want to know what kind of people become global citizens? you want to know what's in their dna? two words. action and engagement. these are people who truly care about eliminating extreme poverty by 2030 through programs that empower women and girls, improve health and education, strengthen food security, deliver clean water and sanitation, cleanup the environment, encourage innovation and promote citizenship. >> and actually, it's super easy. i've got my app open right here. this issue is environment. it says tweet world leaders and ask them to help millions affected by the recent hurricanes and monsoon floods. tweet right now. you click tweet. that's an issue i care about. something we can stay engaged in and bingo, i earn a point. >> governments to commit billions to charitable organizations around the worl. it's an ongoing battle but one that's played an important role

>> thank you guys for being here. i'm going to start right here with you. i think a lot of people in the u.s., the idea of girls not being able to go to school, something as basic as that is shocking. tell us about the work that you're doing. >> so i just want to educate girls in developing countries and the whole purpose behind that is when you look at a penny, they think that they don't have any value and it's sad to say this is the way girls are being viewed worldwide. a penny is just want a penny and a girl is just not a girl, so for the past few years i've been using pennies to educate girls in developing countries. >> what is the cost of sending one girl to a school -- >> so the cost for sending one girl to school is 50,000 pennies. and that's fiftd. >> and that's $50. >> yes. >> that's really amazing. >> can you tell us about the

wrork you do in uganda. >> about 260,000 people and the reason why -- because i myself was also born at home and when i was growing up around six years i watched women giving birth on the roadside. so when i went to school, i wrote up like training during like holidays i was -- and share with the rest of the women in the community. over 80 villages. so we were able to identify an organization to help with a health center. >> so you started this health center and people come there and they train and they get knowledge for safer births. >> yes. initially in prevention, like preventive measures, how mothers can take care of their babies. >> right. >> how can they access services to give back. so initially we didn't have this

space, so with the help and support of global citizen we were able to set up this health center and currently we deliver over 30 babies and over 120 women. >> thank you guys so much. both for coming here and for the work you do. >> yeah. thanks for all you do. appreciate it. all right. and coming up, nbc's indicate snow talks with demi lovato about her work with global citizens.

welcome back. we are just miptsz away from the start of this year's global citizen fest. >> and among the people that we'll be seeing on the stage just behind us tonight is the host demi lovato and she has distinguished herself as a global citizen with her tireless work supporting refugees and as a mental health activist. >> our very own kate snow sat down with debbie and joins us now. >> we all know her, right, for her huge hit songs. you also need to know that at 25 years old she is trying to reduce the stigma around mental illness. she told me that fans sometimes come up to her and tell her that she literally saved their lives because of her advocacy and speaking out. and that all ties in with a surprise announcement she'll make right here tonight. i sat down with denim i and global citizen cofounder hugh

evans. >> demi lovato. on stage she's a force to be reckoned with and when she sings her song for you, it feels like she really would do anything for you. to sit down and talk with her and it's pretty clear she genuinely wants to be a force for change in the world. >> what is the very best part of being demi lovato right now? >> being able to make a difference in the world by using my platform for helping others. >> you got something like 40 million followers on instagram right now. >> 61. >> oh, 61. >> sorry. i like hate to be like 61. >> 61. >> yeah. it's crazy. >> wow. >> and to all those millions, demi sends out positive at this time. i've been looking at all your social media. you've been doing a lot of hashtag no make up and body image kind of stuff where you tell girls, you know, look in

the mirror and say i look beautiful today. that's important to you too, obvious am. why? >> it's important that young girls on social media and guys, that they have somebody to look up to that is body positive and someone that has learned to accept themselves for who they are. and we live in a world where society is constantly telling us that we need to look a certain way, we need to act a certain way. and it's okay to be different and i want people to know that. >> and what makes demi lovato different is that she has openly discussed serious issues in her life. >> you have had struggles, though, and you're very open about that, which i think is also unusual, right? i mean, not every celebrity shares as much as you share. >> when i went into treatment for the first time, my manager told me, you know, we could stay private and not talk about what you're in here for and just let this be your private personal journey or you can be public

with it and really own up to it and talk about the things that you're struggling with in hopes that it helps others. and that's what i chose to do because that's what i feel like my purpose is on this earth. >> it was that desire to help others that first led her to the global citizen movement, an international advocacy organization with the aim of ending extreme port by 2030. cofounded by humanitarian hugh evans. >> i was asking you about how not everybody with a platform uses it the way you're using it. is that why you got involved with global citizen, because you have this platform? >> you know, i want to see change in this world and global citizen is an organization that implements change and makes it happen. >> hugh, what's it been like to have demi on the global citizen team? >> we're so incredible to have her as global citizen ambassador for both refugees and hejts health. we've really started to do some really cool work together. >> i will continue to use my

platform to bring awareness. mental health support can enable refugees and many others who have been victims to conflict, to seek justice, to provide closure and healing. when i was forced to flee my home, she gave me hope to move forward. >> you couldn't have a better ambassador in the whole world than demi lovato. she's absolutely remarkable, but on a day to day level, she wants to use her passion to create change in the world, which when you meet someone like her who wants to change the world, i have no doubt that she will. >> her compassion to help people struggling with mental health issues has taken her around the globe with hugh evans and global citizen. she supports the change sthept to bring about. >> hugh, tell me about global silt zen. it's wanted just a concert in new york anymore. you work year-round. and what's the goal? >> the great news is that when i was born in 1983, 52% of the

world's population lived in extreme poverty. it's now down to less than 18% today. so extreme poverty has more than hafld in the last 30 years. so we believe one day that, you know, there will be a world without extreme poverty. that people will have homes that they don't need to be forcibly displaced from that they will be able to have a safe environment where they can work through mental health challenges. this is really the world that we dream of. >> a dream that demi lovato is committed to turning into a reality, and why she'll be on rt global citizen stage tonight to contribute to a better tomorrow. >> is there something about music that brings people together and inspires activism? >> i think there definitely is something about music that brings people together. i feel like music is a universal language and whenever you're able to put positive messages into music, it changes lives and it helps others. and i think this is inspiring people to make a difference.

>> her sixth album tell me you love me is officially out this friday, but we mentioned sorry not sorry. that's the single that's already shot up the billboard hot 100 chart. she tells me that that was all about taking on bullied. she was very bullied as a young girl and she wants to take that on too. >> i'm very blown away by her openness. hard to do that. >> it is. >> is a public figure. >> she owns it. she really does. >> and mental health is something that is so difficult for people to talk about and it takes -- >> right. it's an illness like any other illness. >> thank you so much. in addition to being a father, a fill an throw pistol and an international basketball star our next guest is also a global health advocate committed to the idea that where you are born shouldn't affect your access to the most basic medical necessities.

children who have not been immunized receive access to vac seasons. >> so tell us how you got involved in global citizen, what you're working on. >> first of all, i grew up in and my mom and dad mom and dad some point i had to fight for my life. to be where i am now. then i decided to begin the serge ibaka foundation. and now i am working for global citizens. with all the work global citizens be doing, this is like living my dream. this is something i want to do. this was something i was dreaming when i was young, when i was living in the street, when i was in congo. now global citizen give me this opportunity. >> you were born and raised in

the congo. how hard is it to try to create any kind of medical infrastructure in the midst of -- >> it's hard. it's not easy. it's hard because at some point we had a war in congo. you know, the system is still -- it's getting better but it's still slow. you know how in africa everything is going. we do the best we can. today we -- with global citizen i am sure we're going to keep working and keep trying to make things work out there. >> you started the foundation and that focuses on vaccination? >> yes. the serge ibaka foundation is focusing on health and education. that's the two most important in africa in general because without health you cannot go in school to learn education.

so we need both. there are a loft kit of kids ou there. i can give the example myself. if you don't have health you don't have the strength to go to the school. one of my dreams is to make sure, before health and education, make sure the kids have health and then they're going to have access to have a great education. with all the work the global citizen be doing. >> it strikes me, talking about global citizen appeal to the rest of the world. what's it like as the league gets more international, people from all sorts of different countries are mixing with each other, talking with each other. do you find you have a lot of common ground? >> yes. with everything the league, the nba be doing. one comment is giving back. that's why we have the nba care. and the league be going all over the place, not only for

basketball but working off the court, in education, health. i think it's great for a lot of young players coming to the league, learning from that. when i was young i used to dream about helping and giving back. the fact now, playing in the nba and seeing everything the nba be doing, it gives you more opportunity and courage to keep doing that? is toronto going to win the east this year? >> anything is possible. we have a great team and we're going to try. >> it's a good deal. looking forward to the season. thank you, serge ibaka. >> thank you. >> after the break, the start of the global citizen festival live in central park in new york city. stay with us.

we're also looking forward to some big commitments throughout the day on some of the other major issues, including hiv aids and refugees. two of the major focuses for the sit zefcitizens festival this y.

strike them five years later. many communities have suffered unimaginable communities, especialyet not one have been quiblgtsed e for convicted for what is crimes against humanity. i pledge that my colleagues working on the ground in iraq will continue to monitor and report on human rights abuses for the purpose of evidence gathering. he wi we want to bring justice and compensation for all of the victims of these crimes. his organization the equal justice initiative collaborated with google to bring online their recertain on the history of lynching. our next performer, two-time grammy ay ward winner andra day recently -- >> whew! >> yes. recently joined forces with the equal justice initiative to help raise awareness of this project, and of the legacy of lynching. >> before she comes onstage, let's hear a little more from brian stephenson. brian? >> i don't believe we're free in america. i think we're haunted by our history of racial inequality. burdened by this legacy created by slavery and lynching and segregation. and whether you're born in 2017 or 1930, you are affected by the environment we have created by being silent. i don't think slavery ended in 1865. i think it evolved.

we had mobs of thousands of people gathering in courthouse yards and in fields doing horrific things to people and we haven't done anything to acknowledge that. it is american history, and for us to recover from that violence from that terrorism, we all have to know it and we have to talk about it. this project in particular is a project about tearing down those boundaries. google has a kind of expertise, a kind of knowledge about information, and they've been able to take what we know about lynching and what we have heard from the families we have spent time with, and make that knowledge accessible to a lot more people. i think it will compel us to think differently about what we need to do to correct the past, to address the past, but also how we make a better future. [ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> oh! >> and doing programming in the middle east for the past six years. community art is critical for refugees and refugee camps, because it gives people a reason to wake up in the morning. the arts themselves especially when made on a public scale. it can be able to provide and opportunity for children in such serious trauma, a chance to be able to communicate to their own

communities what they care about and also communicate to the world what's important to them. [ speaking in foreign language ] >> they have been through trauma. they've been through, you know, so many horrific things, and it's really important for the young people in those communities to have positive activities to have a creative outlet. this past year the funding for the programs we going to be doing in palestinian refugee camps did not come through. and so there were kids who would have had these experiences, who would have had these amazing outlets creatively and been able to connect with their community and that wasn't able to happen. in this refugee camp there's not a lot of joy. there's not a lot to be happy about and this is one of the few

things they have these kind of art space programs, and if that gets cut i can't even imagine what these kids will be left with. the funding cuts happening all across the world right now are something that's very, very difficult for people who are relying on this, both for necessities but also for hope for the future. [ speaking in foreign language ] >> global citizens 200 -- [ cheers ] -- 264 million children are out of school globally. girls the worst of this unimaginable statistic. 15 million primary school aged girls will never step foot in a classroom. >> this situation -- sorry. this situation is even harder when children live in a conflict zone or have experienced a

natural disaster in times of crisis, which we know that's going on now. up to 35% of children miss out completely on an education. >> the impact of not being in school is devastating on a child's ability to earn and income down the road. which in turn negatively impacts communities and nations. every year a child stays in school her earning power increases by 10%. so the economic impact of 250 million children not getting a bake education is equivalent to losing $129 billion a year. >> too many. but there is hope. the global partnership for education works to make sure the world's poorest countries get the funding they need for education, and the education cannot wait fund ensures that children in conflict zones can continue their educations. >> global citizens have already taken 1.6 million accesses to

support global education. >> whew! >> which have led to 57 commitments and announcements worth $2.4 billion, and set to affect the lives of 60 million people by 2030. so far 15 million lives have already been impacted, and you can take action right now, too. just textbooks to 54459 to get started, and it is my great honor to introduce a video by a true global citizen and champion of girls' education, former first lady michelle obama. now, this isn't the first time i've talked with you about this issue. i first came to global citizen back in 2015 to ask for your help and i launched an in the campaign for adolescent girls' education and you truly stepped up taking more thanes 1.8 million actions to support girls worldwide. that was an outstanding start, but the fact is, that today 130 million girls of all ages are still not in school. this breaks my heart. both as a woman who's life was transformed by my education, and as the mother of two daughters who want them and every girl on this planets to fulfill her boundless potential and become who and what she's meant to be. so while times may have changed and i may no longer live in the white house, i have no intention of walking away from these girls. i plan to keep on working on this issue for the rest of my life. and i need your help. in the coming months, through

the obama presidential center we'll be announcing new ways to commit your time, energy and resources to this cause. and i look forward to working with partners like global citizen and with all of you to give all of our girls the opportunities they deserve. thanks so much. nutrition, and in extreme cases, death. millions more face foot insecurities across the region. >> now, these issues are caused by conflict, like the civil war in south sudan, or by boko haram's acts of terror in nigeria, and the majority of chronically mal nourished people live in countries affected by conflict. >> earlier this year, the u.n. issued a call for 4.9 billion in funding to stave off famine in all four countries. so far, $2.7 billion has been raised. the u.s. has been the largest contributor to the famine appeal. but as the government mulls drastic cuts to foreign aid, there's no guarantee the u.s. will be able to provide this support in the future. >> global citizens have already taken almost 75,000 actions to support food and hunger issues during this campaign, but there's something you can do right now. text food to 54459 to get

started. >> right now in south sudan, there's no food, because of the insecurity. war began, people were killed, and the roads were immediately blocked. those who are trapped within the town, they cannot access food anymore. so the situation became uncontrollable. that's why i decided to move on. bidi bidi is a refugee camp in northern uganda, one of the largest in the world. here in bidi bidi, basic needs have not been easy. many people came without anything. the food ratio which they receive, you find thought in actually sense, this progress is not enough. i'm not used to just sitting down and waiting for something to be done. that's why i made my mind to help the refugees to work in the settlement. supporting them in terms of food

security and livelihoods. i'm working now for caritas auto. caritas started giving out vegetable seeds, so they can improve on the nutrition for the households in bidi bidi. ♪

[ applause ] . >> hello global citizens and new york! i've got some very bad news and i've got some good news. the bad news is for the first time in decades, world hunger is going up. over 800 million men, women, and children don't know where their next meal is going to come from. and the answer and the question comes, why? m man-made conflict. man-made conflict is driving hunger all over the world.

syria, iraq, south sudan, yemen, myanmar. but the question is, what can we do about it? how do we end starvation? and the answer is me and you. we can use food not as a weapon of war, but a weapon of peace. and this man right here, this democrat senator, working with republican senators in the united states congress, and bringing the president and the united states and congress together, and the good news, this week, the united states announced $1.3 billion to humanitarian aid. you are making a difference, your voice is being heard, god bless you. senator coons? >> thank you, david. hello, i'm u.s. senator chris coons from delaware. just a few months ago in april, i traveled to the bidi bidi refugee settlement in uganda, one of the main countries dealing with the largest

humanitarian crisis since world war ii. in uganda alone, there's over a million refugees who have fled violence and famine in south sudan. the humanitarian crisis in south sudan is a bipartisyproduct of war and man-made violence. but here's the thing, the solution is man-made. guess what, you are the solution. here's what you've already done. global citizens made over 60,000 actions, calling on congress to respond to famine. and thanks to your action, my colleagues in the senate and i have proposed over 300 million more dollars this year to fund international disaster assistance. in total the u.s. senate has called for $1.6 billion in funding for food assistance and $3.1 billion in funding for international disaster assistance. we're calling on the house of representatives, on the president, to follow our lead,

and we need your help. so here's what i'm asking you to do tonight. reach out to your member of congress, reach out to your senators, let them know that together we are all global citizens. and we support american foreign aid! thank you tonight! when i was younger, a while ago, a terrible epidemic hit us. it was called aids. nobody knew what it was, where it came from, how you got it. people panicked and were afraid and left people dying on the streets all over. it marked a generation of people. and people have fought hard and long to find a cure. and to find people who will stand with them to say, i love you no matter what. are you all ready to do that? i mean, in the way, way back, are you cool with that? people just need you to say you're okay with me. can you say that? you're okay with me. say it over there. you're okay with me. and i stand with you. this is how we change the world, one person at a time, saying this is what has to happen and

but hiv is far from over. it continues to be deadly for many. for those who do get treatment, it means taking pills for the rest of their lives. at johnson & johnson we are determined to do more true innovation. for the first -- for the past 10 years, we have been working on an hiv vaccine using an innovative technology platform. the same technology we are using to make vaccines for ebola and zika. now, we are excited to share with you the substantial progress on our hiv vaccine and commitment to accelerate our hiv vaccine and bring it to the world. our hiv vaccine is a global vaccine, it's meant to protect against the variety of hiv strains. in early stage clinical studies, we have seen 100% immune response in 350 healthy

the energy we have in this park today is making very real all the writing we have around the goals in many people's lives. not a few years ago, i had an education in northern nigeria. today many of you know that place to be the birth of boko haram. and yet, today i am the deputy secretary-general of the united nations. so we know that terrorists are not born. we know that there's a set of circumstances, poverty, the lack of an education, excluded from what should be rightly theirs. the global goals for us, are about bringing everyone back in the tent, leaving no one behind. and making sure that every single one of you. and the actions that you have, actually make a difference in the world. you and i know that we're in a pretty big mess, right? we're in a good mess?

a bad mess. that mess is going to be cleaned up by the goals, all 17 of them. in every part of the world, it's going to happen because you are together with us walking the talk over the next 13 years until the end. i want to hear your voice for our agenda. i want to hear you make noise for empowering girls. for ending poverty. for turning slums into cities. for those in despair have hope in their lives today and tomorrow. global citizens, our next performer is going to make our goals not just signed, but sealed and delivered. >> all right, global citizens. are you ready?

the president of barbuda which was just destroyed by hurrican irma who was on stage making a appeal for a fund from nations. you have incredible organization coordination that has to happen to bring it all together. >> they were able to get incredible things done in terms of funding for aids, drugs, and aid clinical trials in term of that. they get a lot of real work done around the world. it's not just a concert. >> think about what we've been talking about. the hurricanes in caribbean, the need for clean water, sanitation, toilets, it seems silly but the amount of people around the world that don't have access to basic sanitary needs. and you get 60,000 people
