he came right to the middle and shoot more. >> could you see his face? >> he had a mask. >> and that witness also saying he she works with the v.a., she had blood stains on her dress. pete williams, what fr yoyour s what are you hearing? >> reporter: according to investigators, a 26-year-old man from rutherford county, tennessee, which is not far from nashville, drove to the church parking lot just as the church was letting out for the day, the 10:00 service ending at about 11:30, got out of his suv with the engine still running, shot a woman who was coming out of the kurn church, she was killed. and then he went inside and continued to fire. he was confronted by a church usher and according to the police, if it had not been for that usher, things could have been much worse.

the police say the usher had a struggle with the gunman, that the gunman beat the usher with his pistol and during the struggle, the gunman shot himself in the left chest. that ended the shooting.usher r car, he had a permit to carry a weapon. enbroug he brought his own gun back in and kept an eye on the gunman white waitihile waiting for pol. obviously it could have been far worse, but still a shock to people in the neighborhood. >> these people watch me and my family and they were there during my -- yeah. loved them all. it's very sad day for everybody. >> reporter: police are questioning the gun man and also

talking to the victims who are in the hospital trying to get a better picture of how it happened inside. but it does appear the gunman's injuries are nonlife-threaten g nonlife-threatening. so undoubtedly charges will be filed. they have said he was a african-american man but have not said anything about a motive. people inside the church according to witnesses war mere mixture of people, so not predominant race or ethnic group inside the church. nonetheless the police say they know the motive, but they haven't been public with it yet. federal people are helping with the police, but this is basically at this point a police investigation and the police have promised to release more information about the gunman and why they think this happened in the coming hours. >> pete, thank you so much. very latest gdata for from us pete williams.

i want to bring in jim cavanaugh former atf special agent in charge and msnbc analyst. there we have it from pete, the latest pieces of information, he was 26, we have an understanding of his background. but this is a church, a neighborhood that is quite diverse and parishioners as well. about 60 of them according to the eyewitness also reflect that community. >> right. and look at the targeting here. we always look at the target to try to discern motive. we look at the purpose, the planning. so you have a very deliberate act here. the guy coming to the church, when the services just finishing, he has a mask, he's armed. didn't sound like an ad hoc robbery or anything. sounds like a guy who is bent on killing members of this congregation. and it's a very diverse area. so would is the motive behind the shooting? revenge, is he trying to get

back at somebody there, did somebody at that church done him wrong? why is this the target of his murder spree on this sunday morning. so that is what bureau fee ded e detectives will try to find out. search his car, home, computers and discern what the motive is and then look back in the months before at his planning or threats or pre-offense behavior as we call it. >> and we understand he had the plafr mask. does that tell you anything about the suspect here wearing a mask, not wanting to be recognized or known? >> tells me he just might want to get away. a guy bent on murder and suicide doesn't care if you see him, but a guy with a mask often wants to get away. it's not definitive, but it could be that he wanted to commit mass murder, this is what this guy was about, was mass murder despite he didn't achieve

and you saw them not being there, staying in the locker room. this following players across the country remaining defy and in other places against the president's statements. many athletes taking a knee as the games began before the games began. and some found other ways to express themselves from the patriots joining arms in solidarity as you see here to the steelers choosing to stay in the locker room as the nags tio anthem played out. this began when the president launched an attack against players. #take a knee is now trending this hour. let's go to morgan radford in new jersey. and there also a game kicking off and now about to finish in the fourth quarter, right? >> reporter: they just finished. people are filing out behind me. but interestingly, this has really been a domino effect.

so we have seen this kind of backlash grow throughout the day. it started in the first game of the day in london and we saw players on the field taking a knee along with the owners of the jaguars linking arm and arm. and then right here, we saw the acting owner actually got on the field with a similar thing. but jets is an interesting case because alternatively the actual owner of the jets works for president trump as an ambassador. so you can see kind of the tension playing out in this team specifically. but also that is kind of the type of tension and discussion we're seeing now happen across the country. for example, fans we spoke to today some of them said, hey, look, i support these nfl people who are protesting because frankly, it is their right and what they are standing for is equality, inclusion and diversity. other people said no, i don't agree and i stand with the president and they said this isn't the time, place or

platform for that type of protest. but take a listen to one fan i spoke on to today. >> i think the sports players, the nfl, nba and major league baseball players are completely valley dated u validated and all president trump is doing is validated everything that the players have been doing. >> what do you mean validate something. >> there is inequality in this country. it's not a protest against the military, it's a protest about inequality. >> reporter: and richard, as a reporter, isaiah been really fascinating to watch the speed of this movement, but also too watch to watch it grow. it's expanded to the nba and major league baseball. and of course the mega super stars like steph curry, lebron james saying we have a right to our own free expression. >> very interesting conversation you lad there.

equality and we need to get moving. >> without a doubt. research shows police brutality. and african-americans represent 42% of individuals killed by the police who are not attacking nor who has a weapon at the time that they are killed. so we have to reorient the narrative. this is about the fact that black lives matter. this is the fact that football players, baseball player, basketball players, they are black and brown men and unfortunately, it didn't matter if you are flew it or less affluent, you might be profiled and it can turn deadly. >> when we look at this, the issue is also political. this is the president of the united states. he practice these statements using the "b" word there in alabama.

this as he is taking what has been called unconventional support for a candidate there in the race for the republican seat. but he's finding that potentially he may not have backed the right person. he also has health care now being pushed forward. gram kham/cassidy also not look good. is this a political redirection to regrekt teredirect the narra? >> since that alabama rally, the president this weekend has tweeted or he retweeted at least 11 times about the nfl, the nba and the nags ap tional anthem protests. it is important to delineate that this is not a froes against the anthem or the flag, this is about people who think the country is not living up to those ideals. the president certainly knows that most of the country in polls thative of kaepernick's

protest. and now i think we'll have a conversation about this. president trump and race relations and two of the favorite sports will force the conversation. and you have in the nba and nfl seven out of ten players are african-american. so it's not a tenable proposition for these teams to simply ignore what the president is saying. >> nfl owners donated as you might have watched some $7.2 million to president trump's inauguration in january. there are six owners that supported the president trump, but they have they have lmg un forgely condemned his attack on play eve players including bob kraft. are you surprised that they are saying we don't think you have it right here, sir? >> no, and that has been the funny thing to watch are these releases that have come on

twitter and social media the last 24 to 36 hours from these nfl owners. at least seven of them gave money to trump when he was running for office. but it's not surprising to me to see them come out and lock arms in protest and release these statements when potential money can be affected. when you when colin kaepernick was trying to get a job, no one wanted to release a statement and say why they didn't want to sign him or give him a job. but when the effect can come to their pocketbooks, then now we're seeing all this unity and unification and isaiah interesting to sit's interesting to see all of this happening when the threat of money comes up. >> so we'll have to's wheth see

you can fix obamacare, but we have it, it's not going away. >> because it is effectively dead. when we look at this, andy, you ran medicare, medicaid, also the affordable care act for the obama white house. this latest plan of block grants, the idea that certain states who supported obamacare will now get less, and those who did not support obamacare will be getting more, would this even work? >> this is a really radical plan. as you say, it would cut dramatically the funds that go to states. it would sharply curtail medicaid which is the program that cares for kids, people with dsz a disabilities, lo disabilities, seniors. and so this is a radical plan, i think that is why it is starting to lose ground. but i would just warn everyone we should try to distinguish

between negotiating publicly and being actually against a bill. and with respect to everybody here, people are still leaving themselves room as new language comes on out. so i think it's important to understand that until we get to september 30th, i think in thing is still with some laugh life n it. >> so democrats should not celebrate? >> yeah, dems should nocrats sh celebrate. we had wanted to put together a bill with fixes. and all of a sudden lamar alexander says conditions work with democrats so this effort coming back up again. it just proves that we have to stay on it until september 30th and if this bill was to pass, it would basically be the same day old republican health care

but look, i didn't support obamacare. i don't support obamacare. i think there is a better solution. but it's the process. you can't get major legislation passed without public support. you just can't do it. because ultimately the people will tell the congress what to do and remember, obamacare was wildly unpopular. we won three election cycles on it and then the republicans turned out they didn't have a plan when they got in charge. and now people like obamacare and there is a lot of people who have benefited. others haven't because they are paying too much. and they like the insurance that they had before. but the structure of obamacare is here to stay because we lost the argument politically. now, we can do things to fix it and make it better, and that has incumbe been the democratic point of view. are you the republicans are just lost this fight. they don't know how to explain how free market health care could possibly work.

and if you don't have public support, this is what you get. >> is this master craftsmanship by bernie sanders, because he was bringing up the idea of single payor, that they now have graham/cassidy being pushed forward, so maybe bernie sanders looks like a winner. >> well, i think a lot of democrats including elizabeth warren and hillary clinton have been in support of making sure that everybody has access to affordable health care. bernie sanders is amongst that crew, but certainly not the only one. i think that the big thing here for us is making sure that we get through september 30th, and this bill does not pass because it will hurt a lot of americans, and we actually work toward fixing obamacare and actually what that looks like and make sure that everybody is covered and people get the protections that they need. >> andy, one of the criticisms has been that we are looking at single choices because of

welcome back. i'm richard lui following that breaking news story coming out of nashville, tennessee, we're learning that nashville police flamed the gunm named the gunman and the victims. this just in, according to the nashville police department spokesman, the shooter is 25-year-old emanuel sampson from murfeesboro, tennessee. police say the gunman shot position after killing one woman and shooting six others. two of the victims are in critical condition. police also named the man many said was the hero of the day, that hero of the day? 22-year-old robert engel, a church usher who police say tackled the suspect somp sampso.

it is football sunday across america and every single game so far has seen players showing a bit of defiance against president trump and the words he used to describe what pro athletes have been doing. kneeling. we'll take you now to mike is ahead of the redskins game, the last one to kickoff on this sunday which will be live on nbc

today. but so far every single game we have seen some sort of protest. what are you seeing there? >> reporter: and no doubt we will he see one tonight. this is the oakland raiders and the washington redskins. the oakland raiders of course their stand running back marshawn lynch who has been sitting down on, kneeling, but sitting during the first two games. now the fuse being lit by president trump on friday night in a speech in alabama when he called collin kaepernick an so about that except he didn't use the initials. redskins no strangers to controversial.that except he di the initials. redskins no strangers to controversial. many people the movement to have them change their name from redskins which many consider to be derogatory has picked up steam. but i have to tell you, they have just opened up the parking lot here about 20 minutes ago

that they be fire and he was basically saying and confirming and reaffirming his beliefs. he says there is tremendous solidarity for the flag. very disrespectful when he was asked about those kneeling. he was also asked about bob kraft, a team other than. and bob kraft coming out against the president despite supporting him during the election. and the president saying he has to do whatever he wants. and that he thinks it's very disrespectful to the country. again, that again going back to the president's request that they be fired, that they do something -- when they do something like that, that the owners need to be doing something. is the president realizing that he has stepped into a culture r ral depth that he had no idea how deep it went? >> i don't think the president is coming to that realization. i think the president wants to tie this issue to the american flag and assert that these

players are not patriotic when in fact that is not working and people are seeing this as a racial equality issue which is what it is. so that issue where the president is failing essentially at spinning it into this issue about whether or not there is something about our heritage and whether or not people love america. and these players are essentially continuing a long tradition of flavplayers -- aths like mohammad ally and jackie robinson, the 1968 olympics and other people who saidly said i'm not going to be intimidated and i will sacrifice my status. so i think that these players are saying that and i think it will have ripple effects. i think the nation as a whole are looking at these players and saying if they are risk losing their jobs, i might the be able to do that too. >> and rick, the way that professional sports works today,

nationals and share terrorist information with the united states. and their officials and officials so far have declined to reveal whether this would include the six muslim majority nations from the expiring second executive order. there's no official date for when these new restrictions will go into effect but it's expected to be very soon. joining us now is immigration attorney fiona macentity. as you look at this, what does this mean so far to your clients that you've represented? >> thanks for having me, richard. we've really seen -- it's basically been a blanket muslim ban and that's what the administration has said, trump said that on his campaign trail and we saw that that was implemented by the first executive order and then by the second executive order. >> it's about to hit the supreme court. do you think any of the changes that have been reported, the two adjust each and every one --

adjust the policy to address specific nations, do you think that will effect the case that's going to go before the supreme court? >> i mean, i'm not sure. we don't know what the restrictions are going to be but even looking at the supreme court's decision in june, they said that anyone who had a close family connection to the states should be permitted to enter and we saw the administration break that down and initially they said that fiances were not considered close family members and they went on to say grandparents were not considered close family. by anyone's definition, we think that obviously grandparents and fiances would be close so who knows we're not sure what way they'll interpret things going forward. >> what are you telling clients to do right now based on the reporting that there could be future changes here? >> i mean, all we can do is really advise on the status quo at the moment. we've heard reports that they are going to be implementing further restrictions.
