♪ breaking overnight -- marilou danley, the girlfriend of las vegas shooter stephen paddock returns to the united states. she was seen being escorted by fbi agents. although unclear where she was taken. >> all of this as we're searching for a motive, learning more about the gunman and cameras placed around the room. and president trump with the criticism of a slow response of his administration. good morning, everyone. it's wednesday, october 4th i'm ayman mohyeldin alongside yasmin vossoughian and louis burgdorf.

we begin with breaking news overnight, marilou danley, the companion and former roommate of steven paddock has returned to the united states. this footage obtained by nbc news show the 62-year-old danley at los angeles international airport being pushed in a wheelchair. multiple sources confirm she was escorted by fbi agents though it was not clear where she was going. this, as we learn more details about where she has been. again, nbc news can confirm that danley arrived in the philippines from japan more than two weeks before the assault took place. now, travel records indicate she arrived in hong kong from a four-day visit back on september 22nd. and last night, she arrived in the united states from manila. investigators revealed that paddock wired $100,000 to her last week.

though not known whether for her or her family or another purpose. yesterday, paddock's brother said the deceased gunman might have been trying to help her. >> $100,000 for mary lou, i'll just try to say what i said before, that's the steve i know. that's what's -- that's something that makes sense. steve would have wanted to take care of marrilou. now, this may be i may be wrong for the day i haven't talked to marilou. >> and eye were the carnage unleashed on an unsuspecting crowd of concertgoers. officials have uncovered a total of 47 firearms. at his home in mesquite, nevada, along with a third location referred to by investigators as

verde. they also revealed paddock had 12 bump fire stocks in the hotel room which would have allowed him to modify an a semi-automatic gun to fire like a machine gun. officials say that legal despite the simulated gunfire. meanwhile, police are showing the aftermath of the raid. and slammed the german newspaper which public, lished them. the eye images show a busted down door, as well as a gun positioned on a gun stand. police say two cameras were located in the hallway so paddock could watch security approach his room. and the department has released a three-minute sample from disturbing body cam of officers arriving at the scene of the shooting. you can actually hear gunfire continuously rain down as officers are scrambling to seek cover and trying to get civilians to safety. officials revealed that paddock fired weapons on and off the 9

to 11 minutes, speaking during a briefing last night. las vegas police officials have discussed one of their own lost trying to protect people from that gunfire, take a listen. >> i want to mention that one of those brave people was las vegas metropolitan police officer charles hartfield. officer hartfield was at the 91 concert that night when shots rang out even though officer hartfield was at the concert as a civilian. he immediately took action to save lives. in that moment, he was acting as a police officer. he ultimately gave his life protecting others. officer hartfield was an 11-year member of the lvpd. leaves behind a wife and two children. i'm very grateful for his sacrifice. >> all right. so, a lot of developments overnight. joining us now from las vegas, nbc news' ron allen. ron, glad to you have back with us. obviously, one of the big pieces

of the investigation, marilou danley arrived late last night in las vegas. what's the words as officials try and piece this together, especially with questions around the motive? >> reporter: well, the big thing is whether or not danley provides information that explains a motive. that gets them to the head -- lets investigators get into the head of paddock to ounces what he was thinking, what he was feeling, days weeks of his life. to some reports, their relationship only went back to last year. and it was unclear whether she was a girlfriend, companion, what the extent of it was. one big question was she apparently lived with him in the house at mesquite and that's a place where there was a large arsenal of weapons found. and there were also explosive materials found. authorities are going to want to know what she knew if anything about any of that. a couple days earlier ago, in

the investigation that police said they believe the gunman acted alone that he did not have an accomplice. she may have been a beneficiaie of his generosity. she may have been a conspirator. we do not know. we do know that authorities said today, for example, that here at the crime scene, they're going to be here for some time to come, yet still going over the entire crime scene. they also said it's going to be several days before they're finished processing the hotel room behind me there. and the hallway area where the shoot-out happened. and where paddock had set up this arsenal of so many dozens of weapons. so the authorizes are trying to be as transparent as possible but they're also cautioning it may be some time before they can answer a lot of our questions. and, yes, this question of motive, why would somebody do this. >> as ron said, marilou danley

is going to be instrumental in trying to establish that. ron allen live, thanks. meanwhile, president trump visited puerto rico yesterday, he's heading to las vegas today calling the act an act of pure evil. give us a rundown of the president's schedule today? >> reporter: yeah, good morning. he will arrive here at 9:30 local time this morning. 12:30 eastern. and will be making two scheduled stops during his trip to las vegas. the first is to a hospital to be meeting with victims as well as medical professionals. and the second stop will be to meet with heroes and first responders. that first stop at the hospital will be an opportunity for president trump to show a more empathetic side of him one that he's credit sized for not showing. he drew criticism for throwing relief supplies into the crowd,

things like toilet paper and telling a family to have a good time. that second script shock one that he's more comfortable in. he'll be surrounded by law enforcement. he did mention las vegas before leaving for that puerto rico trip yet. take a listen. >> look, we have a tragedy. we're going to do -- and what happened in las vegas is in many ways a miracle. the police department has done an incredible job. and we'll be talking about gun laws as time goes by. >> reporter: if reporters are given a chance today, though, expect tough questions about gun control. that's a hot topic here in nevada and across the country right now. the president's big job now, consoler in chief. emotions here are still very raw. guys. >> i don't think he'll be able to brush off the conversation in regards to some change in place for gun laws that is for you're. blake mccoy in las vegas, thank

you. picking up on that issue of gun debate it is now heading to capitol hill after the revelation that the government possessed what are known as bump stocks, a chief accessory that increases the rate of fire. senators grappled with the potential for action while speaking with nbc news' hallie jackson. >> should congress be reconsidering whether bump stocks are legalal or not? >> yeah, i'm not an expert on bump stocks but all things that make us safer, keep me in. so, you think now is the time to have this policy debate? >> yeah, i think so. >> i do not think that the united states congress can legislate a way either. >> can you make it harder for evil to perpetrate its actions? >> i don't think that the united states congress can legislate sanity. >> first off, yeah, let's get the facts, figure what he used. how he got access to those types

of weapons. bump stocks, legally converted weapons that turn them into -- you know, turn semi-automatic weapons into virtually automatic weapons, that's something that i think we'll take a look at. >> and another key republican senator said he's open to legislation on guns. pennsylvania's pat toomey who co-sponsored extended background checks on guns, said he continues to look for opportunities to move forward with it. on the white house lawn yesterday, president trump we'll be talking about gun laws as time goes by. but his former chief strategist said that the president would be playing with fire. asked if he could envision the president pivoting to the left. steve bannon with axios quote, end of everything and softening. after two weeks after hurricane maria struck puerto rico president trump visited the

devastated island after a war of words with the mayor of san juan. with power still out to 93% of the island, the president's trip came amid accusation that the administration did not respond quickly enough. during the four-hour visit, president trump passing out paper towels to residents in need. in a news conference, he praised the federal response to hurricane maria, comparing it to hurricane katrina. >> if you look at a real catastrophe like katrina. and you look at the tremendous -- hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people that died, what is your death count at this moment? >> 16. >> 16 people certified. 16 people versus in the thousands. you can be very proud. >> so, after that news conference, the governor of puerto rico later announced that the death toll from hurricane maria had risen to 34. during his visit, president trump also weighed in on the

cost of puerto rico's recovery later adding that the island's debt may need to be, quote, wiped out. >> now, i hate to tell you, puerto rico, but you've thrown our budget a little out of whack. because we've spent a lot of money on puerto rico and we've saved a lot of lives. >> we have to look at the whole debt structure. you know, they owe a lot of money to your friends on wall street. we're going it to have to wipe that out. you can say good-bye to that. i don't know good it's goldman sachs or whoever it is you can say good-bye to that. >> president trump met briefly with the mayor of san juan after a series of tweets over the weekend. >> sir, i don't want to upset you [ inaudible ]. >> thank you, everybody. >> president ended up leaving more than an hour ahead of schedule. and president trump and his national security team appear to

be on opposite ends when it comes to the iran nuclear agreement. trump has called the deal quote, an embarrassment end quote. and however appearing before the defense services committee, general mattis and general dunford offered a different view. >> the agreement right now, what i testified to last week is, that iran was not in material breach of the agreement. and i do believe the agreement to date has delayed the development of a nuclear capability by iran. >> do you believe it's within our national security interest at the present time to remain in the jcpoa? that's a yes or no question. >> yes, senator, i do. the point i would make is, if we can confirm that iran is living by the agreement, if we can determine that this is in our best interest, then, clearly, we

the house has passed air trofrgal bill that bans most late-term abortions. the bill would make it illegal to perform an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy with the exception of incest rape or to save the life of the mom. three democrats voting in support of the bill and two republicans against the bill. the bill now heads to the senate where it's unlikely to get the eight democratic votes it needs to avoid a filibuster. president trump is weighing the legal immigration system. the president is backing the plan to reduce the amount of legal immigration and shift toward a tim with more emphasis on skills. republican senator john cornyn who was one of the five gop lawmakers who had dinner with trump monday night told bloomberg that no decisions have been made yet. but the white house plans to send an outline of items it wants in a bill as soon as this

week. on sunday, politico reported that house republicans are resisting a legislative fix to the daca program and could actually undermine it. quote, a gop working group formed by house speaker paul ryan held two meetings last week to discuss immigration, and sources say there is virtually no deal between chuck schumer and nancy pelosi. multiple house gop sources told politico that trump's proposal must be pats of the discussion about daca. let's get a check of the weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> no one wants to hear what i have to say. >> right. >> send me home. unfortunately, louis, our break from the tropics appears to be over as two weeks to today, by the way that maria made landfall in puerto rico. we're still in the peak part of the season and now this is typically where we start to watch the western caribbean. and yesterday, we saw a spin in

the caribbean. nicaragua, costa rica, pan that th panama. it's far to the south but here's the problem, it's drifting northward. the five-day development zone takes it northward. and possibly into the gulf of mexico. potentially, this could impact the united states. so, the key now, yeah, we know it's generally going to head towards this northerly direction. here's the american model and the ensemble. don't focus on notion or anything like this but we have no clue what the intensity is going to be. that's the million-dollar question. the key is can it actually start to form. can it ramp itself up? the next two days will be critical. we want to see it as weak as possible. and not develop. when you start to hear it it's good going to develop, that's bad news and that means

welcome back. the sports world is doing its part to help those affected by sunday night's mass shooting in las vegas. yesterday, the nhl's las vegas golden knights along with the charity and league announced a joint donation of $300,000 to support victims and first responders. under the banner nhl across the league will honor victims at season games this week. let's go to the bronx to the start of the mlb playoff, yankees hosting minnesota. the twins took the lead out of the gate. it's the first off lead-off homer in a wildcard game. the twins tacked on two more but it wouldn't last youth as he tacked it up in the bottom of the inning there.

welcome back, everybody. i'm yasmin vossoughian alongside ayman mohyeldin and louis burgdorf. it is the bottom of the hour. let's start with the morning's top story. >> we are learning new details into the investigation into the las vegas shooting and the carnage that a gunman unleashed on an unsuspecting crowd of concertgoers. officials say they have recovered a total of 47 firearms from three different locations including a hotel room at the mandalay bay hotel that stephen paddock used to stage his massacre and along with a location referred to by investigators as verde. they had 12 bump stocks in the holt room which would enable him to fire very much like a machine gun would. >> meanwhile, police are showing photos of the aftermath of the

raid and slammed the german newspaper which published them. the images showed a busted down door along with bullet holes southwest a single weapon left on the floor on a gun stand. the department has released a three-minute video footage at the scene, you can hear gunfire continuously raining down as officers scramble to seek cover and usher civilians to safety. officials reveal that paddock fired a weapon on and off for nine to 11 minutes. let's go to las vegas with nbc news' ron allen joining us. we do understand the shooter's girlfriend arriving back in the united states. we have footage, a little bit of her being escorted out of the airport. do we know so far how long she's going to be questioned, what the authorities learned from her and what they expect to glean from this interview? >> reporter: we don't know what they know. we know they've been in touch with her, and they've been

talking to her. i don't know whether the fbi escorted her or met her at the airport. but they've already started the conversation. and what we believe they're hoping to find out is what paddock was thinking. what he was into during the final days and weeks and perhaps months of his life. because this woman apparently had a fairly close, very close relationship with him. and she, perhaps, more than anyone, would have some insight into what was going on. what was he stressed out about. what was he angry about. what was he trying to do. she also seems to have been the beneficiary of a lot of money from him. $100,000 sent to the philippines, her native land where there are reports that the money was for family. for her to buy a home. or build a home. and there are also some reports in the relationship that goes back to last year, so it may not be that deep. but the profile that we're getting of paddock of a very

wealthy, high roller, gambler, eccentric guy, who was on a rampage. so, that's what authorities, i would think, are hoping they can find out from this woman. also, remember, we also believed that they lived together for some time. and lived in a house where there was a fairly large arsenal of weapons and explosive tears. what did she know about that? at this point, again, authorities have said that they believe he acted alone. but they're ruling out anything with her at this point, as far as we know. >> certainly, a lot of questions in regards to the timing of their relationship and how much she knows. but a lot of people out there hoping that she is the key to this whole thing to answer some questions for, of course, so many of the victims affected by this. nbc's ron allen, thank you. mean windchill, president trump heads to las vegas, many eager to see the optics he'll display after yesterday's rift to puerto rico.

joining us now is nbc's blake mccoy. blake, obviously questions from the president's trip to puerto rico yesterday. what can we expect from the president there today? >> reporter: ayman, good morning. the president's big job today as it was yesterday in puerto rico is consoler in chief. the president will land here in las vegas at 9:30 local time, 12:30 eastern. he'll be make two stops. the first is to a hospital where he'll be meeting with victims and some medical professionals. the second stop will be to meet with first responders and some of the heroes. it's at that first stop that the president will have an opportunity to flip the script, if you will and show a more empathetic side that he was criticized for not showing yesterday. the president if you'll recall yesterday was throwing relief supplies into the crowd. treating it more like a rally than the somber event that it was supposed to be. the president's visit here in las vegas is fairly loose.

he'll be on the ground for 3 1/2 hours. it does leave wiggle room for the president if she decides to stop and spend more times at certain locations. there are more podium or press stands but we do expect a press gaggle at some point. if he does take questions expect gun control to be a hot topic. the president said he doesn't want to talk about that, but sometimes in the past, he can't help himself, guys. >> blake mccoy, thanks. senate democrats are urging their republican colleagues to join them in reeel creating the nation's gun laws specifically on laws that modify semi-automatic rifles to mimic an automatic rate of fire like the bump stock found in the gunman's hotel room. senator s mccaskey and nelson hd this to say. >> hunting is a big deal in ply

state. i don't know anybody that needs to retrofit a gun, and it's to slaughter people. >> we've seen this before, it happens, national debate, and nothing happens in congress? >> and that's why i think high-speed, high-caliber, rapid-fire republweapons need t outlawed as i have always voted because they're not for hunting. they're for killing. >> raurall right. president trump's trip comes from the trip of puerto rico yesterday, others criticizing him for a sluggish effort. nbc's ron mott has more. >> reporter: president trump meeting families in puerto rico. >> we're going to help you out. >> thank you. >> have a good time. >> thank you. >> reporter: tossing paper towels to residents impacted by hurricane maria. and praising the federal

trickling, survival kicks in for people like maurice. >> we're strong people. we're going to grow out again but we need his help. >> reporter: services are included. a navy ship pulled into port offering support. >> he saw the necessity of the island. i think he's going to help us, help us get up, to stand up again. >> reporter: taking the president at his word to help a day at a time. the president yesterday also met with the governor of the u.s. virgin islands that was, of course, hit by hurricane irma four weeks before being hit by hurricane maria. mike pence's chief of staff is speaking out on what appears to be a rift in the rnc. nick ayers called for a purge of lawmakers who worked to defeat the president.

and quote on track to get shellacked if trump's legislative policies aren't passed. he added if we aren't going to be in the minority again we might as well be have the minority that helped us become the minority. an examination of records by "usa today" uncovered that the president's family and white house advisers jared kushner and ivanka trump rerouted their personal computers as public scrutiny intensified over their use of private e-mails to conduct white house business. and the routing to a server operated by the trump conversation came on either september 26th or 27th, just days after kushner's use of private e-mail was revealed. a family spokesperson said kushner and trump's personal family e-mail account does not reside and never has resided in, nor passed through the trump

server. claiming that, quote, as an additional security measure, this account used as a fittering service to other entities. and on monday, politico said white house officials have begun examining e-mails on a third account. course to politico, kushner set up the new personal domain in december, ijkfamily.com. ivanka trump joined at station in march but was corresponding with officials through a private e-mail account before that. but both jared and ivanka trump remained members of the executive committee in november 2016 before the account was reportedly established. and joe biden was campaigning in alabama for his longtime friend doug jones who faces an uphill fight against republican nominee roy moore in a decidedly red state.

but biden remained an optimist. >> danny, you know the southern two-thirds of my state is southern, the delmarva peninsula, they talk funny like y'all do, too, you know what i mean? doug possesses what the american political leader and system needs today. no, no, i really mean this. it's become so nasty. so mean-spirited. such a mean-spirited political environment. today, it is terrible. today, everything is a personal attack. when you start off a discussion, attacking the other person's motive. you can't say you're in the pocket of, or you're unethical -- it's hard to get to know that. >> a recent polling shows jones lagging behind the republican moore but not by much. a new poll from jmc analytics put jones behind by eight points in a state that president trump won by nearly 28 points. and opponents of political gerrymandering are putting their

hopes on anthony kennedy. the supreme court hear oral arguments yesterday in a case that accuses the state of wisconsin of drawing legislative maps that dilutes the votes of democratic voters. with republicans taking over a majority of houses and seats. justice kennedy has long been critical of partisan gerrymandering but in the past has said there needs to be a workable standard. and former governor arnold schwarzenegger called on the courts to act because he said that politicians simply won't. >> they're getting re-elected. they have an approval rating of 60% of congress, 98% of them get re-ele re-elected. you know there's something wrong with the system. they will not fix the politicians, so that's why we're here at the supreme court. >> senators john mccain and

sheldon white house released a join statement calling on the court to quote return control to elections of the people. the state department takes reaction to the ongoing deputy with cuba. details over the latest moves on the report of super sonic attacks on the u.s. embassy in havana. plus, wet weather in parts of the country claiming the potential for flash flooding. bill karins is back with that when we return. ♪ we're drowning in information.

the reason i say that the hurricane center is warming this area of low pressure trying to form in the caribbean. the key in the rafforecast, we don't want it for form. the waters are favorable for it to intensify. it is going to head northward. the northern gulf coast, we know we're going to get some wet weather and rain out of this, we just don't know what intensity. tropical depression, tropical storm, maybe a hurricane. anything is on the table, still four or five days away. this is still the peak of the hurricane season. usually in october you expect one or two. last year this time we were dealing with hurricane matthew. you can still get big storms in october. we're just crossing our fingers that this one will not be one of them. >> how many weeks do we have left? >> it goes to the end of november. really, the peak of the season, by the time we get to halloween, things quickly die off as things get colder.

live from london. let's start with an update on the yahoo! data breach in 2013. >> it wasn't until december last year that they no acknowledged it happened. they have been bought by verizon. they paid $4.5 million for the company, 350 million less than originally expected because of the hack. it turns out it is not just 1 billion users that breached by $33 billion. they say the company was overvalued during the purchase. there are 40 consumer class action lawsuits in federal and state courts. better news for some u.s. carmakers. that is the silver lining from hurricane harvey and irma in

florida and texas. they are looking to maintain that momentum after what's been six pretty tough years. >> while we are on the topic of the u.s. auto industry, ford's new ceo laid out an ambitious plan to investors. what can you tell us about that? >> jim hackett has been in the job there since may. he is now focused on cost cutting. he looks to slash about $14 billion over the next five years. he is hoping to sell more trucks as well as electric and hybrid cars. he has pointed out things like partners with lyft and other partnerships as a way of sharing costs. you like your suvs or trucks. he has to pad profits by selling more of those. this move to electric could be quite tricky for the car industry. they are expensive to build. here in europe by 2013, they were looking to all together ban
