i'm ayman mohyeldin. learning more about the girlfriend of the gunman of the las vegas shooting may have known about plans as they continue to piece together details of the events leading up to that massacre. officials say marly lieu danley spent most of yesterday answering questions from the fbi and las vegas police department after returning to the united states from the philippines late tuesday. a senior law enforcement tells nbc news she was cooperative and no sign that she had anything to do with steven paddock's plan for the mass shooting. her lawyer reiterated while reading a statement from danley yesterday. >> he never said anything to me or took any actions that i was aware of that i understood in any way to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen. it never occurred to me in any way whatsoever he was planning violence against anyone.

>> in the meantime offering a detailed timeline of the shooting yesterday. officials say the first shots were recorded at 10:05 p.m. by 10:12 the first officers arrived on the floor just below the one where paddock was located at mandalay bay hotel. 10:15 they say steven paddock filed his final shot. two minutes later officers arrived on his floor. 11:20 breached the hotel room finding him dead on the floor. security officer was the first to confront stephen paddock and alert him of location. officials say he arrived on the 32nd floor even before swat officers did. they added that paddock saw him approaching on the cameras he set up in the floor hallway and fired through the room's door hitting campos in the leg.

>> where do we turn now? >> i'm not sure that's over with. that's just the beginning of the process with her. going to talk to her again, and, again, to see if her story holds up of course. we're out here on the strip. you can see behind me. there's a memorial forming out there. this is the closest we've gotten to the hotel. the mandalay bay over there. because the place is opening up now. to answer your question more directly. authorities say they think this individual had a secret life they described it as. they're trying to find people who they describe as associates of his and they seem convinced that he had some help or that somebody along the way should have known what he was doing. particul particularly because he assembled so many weapons and also significant amount of bomb

making material in his vehicle. they just believe this is almost impossible for a single individual to do this alone. so the investigation is trying to just peel away the layers of his life to try to get a better understanding of why he did this. for all the talk about what he did, the investigators today still could not answer the question of why he did it. why he would carry this incredible deed out. that's still lingers over this place. no real good answer to that. the process continues. the investigation continues. again, authorities want to talk to more people. today more than ever they seem convinced somebody else figures in this some way beyond just this individual himself. >> as we know, these investigations often take a long time and they're trying to get to the bottom of all of this. still a lot of questions and not a lot of answers. 40 plus weapons on this guy. why somebody possesses this many is a question to us.

president trump traveling to las vegas yesterday. met with survivors, law enforcement and hospital staff. you can see the president and first lady here meeting with patients and posing for photos. he promised survivors he would quote be there for them and to those who lost loved ones he would never leave their side. he also took time to commend the hospital staff for their work treating the hundreds of patients. >> i have to tell you it makes you very proud to be an american when you see the job that they've done and people what would not be around today are up there and be leaving the hospital in a week or two weeks or five weeks. and in some cases even in a few days. it's amazing. one in a few hours. you would never have believed it so i just want to congratulate everybody. it's incredible. incredible what you've done. we've met quite a few people. believe me, they're very lucky to be here. i think the only message we can

say is we're with you 100%. i invited a lot of them over to the white house. if you are ever in white house, come on over to the oval office. they are all saying we want to do it. how do we do it and believe me, i'll be there for them. >> thanked for bravery offering these words of encouragement. >> you showed the world and the world was watching and you showed what professionalism was all about. that was about as fast. something like that could take place for hours and hours and hours. and you can't figure it out. you should be very proud, sheriff. >> president trump ending his address with a message of unity saying we'll endure the pain together as americans. stood clear of any talk about gun policy. the trump administration blasted back against an nbc news exclusive report yesterday about secretary of state rex tillerson's private furry about his treatment at the hands of president trump. that tillerson was actually on the verge of resigning this past

summer which sources say led to an intervention by vice president mike pence and other high ranking officials. there was also the assertion backed by three sources that tillerson openly disparaged the president referring to him adds a quote, moron, after a july meeting at the pentagon. tillerson made a surprise announcement before the press and engaged with reporters. something he has rarely done since taking office. take a listen. >> the vice president has never had to persuade me to remain the secretary of state because i have never considered leaving this post. i served at the appointment of the president and i am here for as long as the president feels i can be useful to achieving his objectives. >> can you address the main headline of the story if you called the president a moron and if not, where do you think the reports are coming from. >> i'm not going to deal with petty stuff like that. this is what i don't understand about washington. i'm not from this place, but the places i come from, we don't deal with that kind of petty

nonsense. it is intended to do nothing, but divide people. i'm not going to be part of this effort to divide this administration. >> now while tillerson did not personally issue a denial of calling the president a moron, later in the day his spokesperson did. >> the secretary does not use that type of language. the secretary did not use that type of language to speak about the president of the united states. he does not use that language to speak about anyone. so i hope that clarifies this. >> he did not say that. >> and president trump reacted to the story about his secretary of state throughout the morning on twitter writing nbc news is fake news and more dishonest than even cnn. they are a disgrace to good reporting. no wonder their news ratings are way down. later the nbc news story has just been totally refuted by secretary tillerson and pence as fake news. they should issue an apology to

america. also addressed his press conference during his visit to las vegas. >> any response to rex tillerson's comments. yes, i'm very honored by his comments. it was fake news. totally phony story. made up. made up by nbc. they just made it up. total confidence in rex. total confidence. thank you very much. turning back to policy, a potential ban on the device that turns rifles into fully automatic machine guns has taken center stage in the gun policy debate in washington. senat senator diane feinstein is proposing legislation to outlaw bump stocks saying the only reason for it is to kill as many people as possible in as short a time as possible. right now such a ban seems to be emerging as the only way to break gridlock over guns in congress. republican senator ron johnson the chairman of the homeland security committee said he would likely support the ban since fully automatic weapons are already illegal.

bill of texas supports outlawing bump stocks saying there's no reason for it. john cornyn calling for hearings with a special focus on firearms attachment. >> joining us for politico. great to have you with us this morning. the door seems to be open to making a slight change to gun policy. we know how quickly the door can close. what's the likelihood of doing the bear minimum on this issue with some of the accessories we've been talking about. >> if we're going to see any progress in terms of gun control following the shooting, bump stock issue is where we're going to see it. we've seen enough key republicans coming out and saying they're at least interested in learning more about this. while it's unclear if the senate would be able to get 60 votes necessary to pass an election like this. i think we'll definitely see some hearings on the issue and seef it discussed for a while. people yesterday indicated they were kind of unclear how it

whether he backed out. just what. everything we're learning is about what he did, but not why. we also understand that the police now think that he had some kind of escape route planned. that he actually thought he was going to survive the attack. we don't know what the evidence is. those are the kinds of bits and pieces that we're learning. no answer to the question why he would do this horrific thing. >> that remains the central question. live in las vegas this morning. thank you. >> after conducting more than 100 interviews, intel senate committee provided update on the probe into russian interference yesterday and issued a warning about upcoming elections. >> the russian intelligence service is determined, clever, and i recommend that every campaign and every election official take this very seriously as we move into november's election and as we move into preparation for the 2018 election. >> the russian efforts did not

end on election day. and we need to be on guard. one of the things particularly troubling to both of us is the fact that become evident that 21 states electoral systems were not all penetrated, but at least -- there was at least trying to open the door. >> okay. while they have not reached a conclusion, the senators also address the dossier compiled by british spy between personal ties of the campaign and associates. chairman suggested parts of the dossier were corroborated, but then hit a wall. though we have been incredibly inlightened at our ability to rebuild backwards the steal dossier up to a certain date, getting past that point

has been somewhat impossible. i don't think we're going to find any intelligence products that unlock that. >> reuters reports special counsel bob mueller acknowledge of the probe. speaking of russia, learning more about the use of facebook in the election. turns the out about a quarter of the 3400 ads linked to russia targeted specific states including traditionally democratic strongholds, wisconsin, michigan, a few others. that ended up flipping for donald trump. as well as the battleground states of florida and ohio. the russians also targeted states with high profile incidents of violence between police and african-american. ads also plant instead solidly red state, texas, alabama, mississippi. last month facebook revealed that groups linked to russia

spent $100,000 on election ads. facebook and twitter have agreed to testify in front of the intelligence question. joining us once again from washington defense reporter from politico. president trump says there's no collusion between his campaign and you have a top dem and top republican from the intelligence committee saying we're not ruling it out. what's the reaction from the pentagon on this. >> the reaction is wait and see given they've drawn no real conclusions yet. interviewing 25 more witnesses this month alone. there's going to be a hearing early next month. hear from social media companies. it sounds like they still have a lot of work to do. we're going have to wait until next year for any concrete answers. >> let's turn to north korea for a moment. particularly comments made by vladimir putin saying those who are trying to speak with north korea using the language of course are only strengthening

the north korean regime. i can assume that's a failed reference to the trump administration. particularly the white house. do you think russia is going to be a force in deescalating the conflict with north korea because we often focus on china. if not china, could it be the russians. >> it could absolutely be the russians. it's going to have to be an international response if there's a solution to this. comments are more proof trump's rhetoric is not helpful. the state department and the pentagon have both stressed that negotiations and diplomacy is still the first priority. that essentially means likely more sanctions which are going to have to be enforced by the international community if they're to have some effect. international collaboration here is definitely a top importance if the issue is to be deescalated. >> as we're reporting today the president was in vegas today. before that he was in puerto rico. you've been looking at how the pentagon has been responding to all of this. has it improved since the weekend. >> military absolutely stepped up its response.

we saw some additional aircraft arrive on the island this week. navy's hospital ship is right off san juan. the situation on the ground is still pretty bad. as of yesterday, only 5% of residents on the island have power. 12% of the island had cell coverage. defense department is working. bringing in mobile cell towers to improve that. helping to distribute fuel and food and water with other fema representati representatives. it's still a long road until it's back to normal. >> live for us in washington, d.c. thank you. president trump and secary of state rex tillerson revealing the heightened tension between the two men. tillerson weighed possible resignation and made an insulting comment about the president. >> secretary of state rex tillerson coming out to respond to an nbc news report about friction with the president and
