10:00 pm
i'm not sure that the storm surge is over yet because it looks to me like it's continuing to climb up the hill here. it's a gentle slope but it looks to me like it's continuing to climb up before it's going to drop off. the wind is certainly not the hurricane-force winds we may have had earlier tonight. not that i've experienced them. i'm going to hop down here. step out of the way here and let you just sort of see what is, again, repeating. u.s. 90 here. the main road. and then just beyond that would be what is the beach. right here along the gulf of mexico. and we should probably begin to see gravity --
10:01 pm
>> you're going to go right through the middle of it. the winds will go weak. the back side of the storm is so weak it will be breezy out of a different direction. as soon as your winds go light that's when you notice it. >> and that gentleman out there that is walking as the warning has often been said through the localities, do not get out there in this. six inches could knock you down. that could be it. but we have this gentleman as you're noting there, kerry sanders, flashlight or what have you -- even though close to buildings or shrubs clearly walking in space that's have six inches. it's a growing swell.

>> go down to pascagoula and think about katrina coming in or pass christian. and of course in gulfport which i spent a lot of time in, what a mess it was there. and the rebuilding has using things and it's really interesting, things that cost like a dollar. but using straps on houses and pieces of medal that are hidden in walls can used in the roofs of houses. if you're buying a house you don't see this. if the building code requires it, you have some protection. and so the building codes have been changing throughout the

region. as a result of what everybody went through during katrina. and we may just see tomorrow when we look at under sunlight the way thicks look. we may sigh really damage is not as extensive as. this is a category one. some of the lessons learned have been applied in the rebuilding of the region. >> what is the rainfall like right now? >> zero. the rain it gone. i have not felt rain for a while. if i'm following what you have been telling me in terms of as you lock opt radar, woer probably at the poin where i'm guessing the rain is pushed past us. wind is continuing to droif the water forward and probably a position. probably soon where the wind begins to drop. and we seat the storm surge head back out to where it belongs. to the gulf of mexico. >> i want to bring in steve. from the mobile, alabama fire
10:04 pm
and rescue. steve, thanks for being with us. you have been listening to our correspondent there right at the coast. watching this storm surge. and we're also getting other pictures further in. of a parking lot. as water has been streaming in. what are you seeing there in mobile, alabama? >> down in the island of course it's a barrier island. they have been seeing water coming in all day. all afternoon. the calls which leads from a along mobile bay leading from mobile to bald win county. it's one under water earlier today as well. anywhere where they are close to water, you'll see water coming up into the areas. i haven't heard any reports of downtown mobile.
10:05 pm
but we have not had any issues. no calls for rescue. or anything like that. so far. >> bill, what are you watching in terms of mobile, alabama. steve there. again saying he hasn't had any calls yet of trouble. >> i saw one report that mobile bay is reporting a four foot water rise. we're waiting to the six to nine foot range. what problems would you see at the top of the range? >> like i said the already had water on it. they closed it down earlier this evening because of that. we could see some flooding in the downtown area along the mobile river. so the potential is there. whether it gets to that point we'll wait and see. >> what kind of resources do you have at the ready if you were to see such a storm surge that bill was describing? >> we have water rescue capable.
10:06 pm
that are strategy placed arn the city in the event gets calls that we need to go in and rescue someone. so far we have been fortunate we have not had any issues. we are on the ready in the event we do. >> state of emergency is what's been called in the state. what did that mean for you and your preparation? >> it puts resources in place in the event that we need them. it gets everyone prepared. the emergency operations center. this morning. and then you have the principle players if you will that are out here, been out here since about 7:00 this morning. prepared to do whatever is necessary. >> have residents more or less listened to the suggestions coming from you and other officials? >> well, from all indications they are.
10:07 pm
we have about 122 people in the four shelters that were open. and we put out the information that your in an area where it normally floods, or you feel the potential and feel unsafe in the structure. by all means go to the one of the shelters. and like i said we have had about 122 that did so. >> steef, what are you seeing when you look outside? >> well, it's there's a little bit of rain here. emergency operations center. but it's not anything real severe at this point. >> you didn't have any problems with tornados? there are a bch of reported water spouts. any damage in the area? >> we had reports of in the north part of the county some possible tornado activity up there. there may have been either a tornado or some straight line winds in the western part of city.
10:08 pm
but no confirmation on either one. >> all right. thank you so much. steve in mobile, alabama. of course watching with you. and bill karen we're watching his live peckture out of mississippi. it seems quiet. but could they be getting more. we have 30 seconds. >> the trees have stopped blowing as much. and the power is on. for the majority. highest winds we have are 70 miles per hour. and that was with the highest portion of the storm. it wouldn't surprise me if this goes down to a tropical storm. maybe an hour from now or possibly even 5:00 a.m. it's not the win. we have another three o four hours of the storm surge. we're waiting for the high tide in mobile bay. that's going to be occurring at 1:45 local time. an hour and a half from now. and woer watching the. -- there's damage to be done. >> and also the land fall.
10:09 pm
>> we're waiting for the land fall. any time. >> stay with us. and bill karens thank you so much. we're watching of course hurricane nate. as it makes its way for the second time the eye official land fall to happen soon. stay with us here. for the latest coverage on that. and much more. right here on msnbc. this is tim barckholtz. that's me! this is something he is researching at exxonmobil: using fuel cells to capture carbon emissions at power plants. this is the potential. reducing co2 emissions by up to 90%... while also producing more power. this could be big. energy lives here. eight hundred dollars when wet switched our auto and home insurance. with liberty, we could afford a real babysitter instead of your brother. hey. oh. that's my robe. is it? you could save seven hundred eighty two dollars when liberty stands with you. liberty mutual insurance.

10:13 pm
you can see it looks like -- it's hard to see. some people walking in the water there to the bottom roigt. it's hard to tell. the water level appears not to be going up any higher. which is good. we know there's water on the bottom floor of the golden nugget and also the hard rock hotel. we have seen parking garages in the area with water. like we have the one you're looking at there. this is the worst of the damage that's going to be done. from the storm surge is occurring roigt now. water level should not really go up any higher than what they're at. >> nate will go straight through. the eye of the storm. >> it looks like from what i can tell on radar. i think buloxi. the center of circulation is moved on shore. right over the top. notice the rain with the storm is to the north now. the rainfall is over with. in the area.
10:14 pm
>> we have a watching in the live picture, here of the parking structure. earlier in the lower part of the -- i don't know if we can move away. we were able to see at least a little bit. it's still there. of the fire hiydrant. it hasn't gone higher or lower in the last 20 minutes. that's consistent with what you're saying. let go to karen sanders. a great shot for us. there of the water front. as well as highway 90. right? what are you seeing, has it changed a lot in last 15 in. >> it has. the winds are shifted a bit. at least dropped is the better word. we calculated the rise here of the road that we're on and we have seen the water now from the storm surge. begin to reseed. so we have probably lost enter between seven inches of water. that we have here.
10:15 pm
and it's continuing to fall back out. so i think that while you're waiting for the official land fall, it would appear those strongest winds on the front end of this have probably already passed over the shore now. and beginning to see the water recreed as gravity pulls it out. driven forward by the wind. with less wind it's beginning to make its way back out. in fact we see some of the waves still crashing, it's certainly not as dramatic as we saw a short time ago. it would appear the storm surge probably hit and again we're going a calculation in the dark here. maybe four, maybe four feet. maybe five feet. now we already see it beginning to reseed back out. and the storm surge appears o drp out. the other shot the fire hydrant. my guess is that's closer to the shoreline. and because of that, it looks like it hasn't changed. where i am, which was at the
10:16 pm
sort of the leading edge of the end of the where the storm surge of going up the hill. it's gone down a considerable distance. >> in your long and storied career. this is the sec -- you're right in the middle of the eye. the wind are going calm. lowest pressure is being measured. have you ever had a hurricane season where you were in the eye two times? you did it with irma. >> this is strange. that was the second one i had been in. now i'm in the third eye. and here we are at night. we're in the eye. and we looked up and saw the birds flying. it's always kind of remarkable with all the crazy winds and all the force of mother nature that when you get to the eye, there's bird flying around and it's relatively calm. so yeah, it's been a very interesting hurricane season. for folks as we know. we have seen hurricane season where we have a lot of strong
10:17 pm
hurricanes but they didn't make land fall like this. so from puerto rico to florida to texas. and now who are along the gulf coast. a hirk season a lot of people are hoping this is the last one. we have to remind people it's not over until november. >> our official hurricane hunter. at the moment. >> i don't know if he signed up for it. he turned into it this season. >> knowing he's got a good nose. >> wait until next year. we have had enough this year. >> the season does quickly drop off after this. once we get to the midof october. the frequency of storms dies. yesterday hurricane matthew last year. you can get big storms this time of year. the storm surge is the question. i was watching my great weather producer behind the scenes. that's updating the numbers.
10:18 pm
storm surge in mobile bay was four feet. the storm surge around bay st. louis is around 4 feet. the highest storm surge is five feet around. and that maybe going up. so mobile bay you're not done. four foot of storm surge. if there's more storm surge to be had and the water levels rising. those are the areas it's occurring. >> bill, 15 seconds. koud it be the eye has hit but the national hurricane center has not yet called it? >> could be. for the most part they let us know quickly. when the center has crossed. and post it on the web site and social media. they haven't done so. >> this one location. as we're watching. >> hurricane center. they make the call. >> we'll be right back. more on hurricane nate. ture. super poligrip free. it creates a seal of the dentures in my mouth.

10:22 pm
always your radar. the black lean. the projection. the forecast. >> let me go through. it's been a while. we're focusing on the hand fall and the storm surge. th other people that have concerns with the bands and the tornado threat and things like that. this is the center of the storm. this is the cloud top. and you can see we have bands that commit all the way through the area. and then another big band coming up through the midof the state. through the midof alabama. if you're getting more power outages it will be in alabama of the the stoshrm surge. this is what was possible. around four feet. it came short of this. we're waiting to see. the water is it still rising there. this is the area of greatest concern. mobile bay, dolphin island. here's the southerly winds. that water is continuing to pile up. even though the storm is
10:23 pm
comingen shore. that's the greatest concern for the storm surge. the wind haven't been that bad as of late. we were at 70 miles per hour winds. was the highest i saw. mobile is at 44. panama city 29. notice the backside of the storm. 12 miles per hour winds. that is it right now. in the new orleans area. so we'll continue to watch if we're fwoeng get the wind that will increase. that's in the eye. thaer in the center of the storm. they were 70 miles per hour wind. about 15 mississippi ago. now down to five. they're going through the center. getting the calm of the storm. that happens sometimes birds will seek refuge in the middle of the storm. in the eye. so let's go and show you the wind field. this is if we're getting hurricane gusts it in the red. to the alabama, massachusetissi border. yellow is where gusts are
10:24 pm
possible. 40 miles per hour gusts. and again 40 miles per hour gusts done knock down too many trees. it's higher up to 50 miles per hour. and here's the last radar image. this is the last center point. at 11:00 east coast time. at the new 2:00 a.m. point should be inland here. you can see somewhere the center if we track it. the black line was the forecast line. which does would be on shore. so as far as who has the strongest winds now. now we're moving awa from the coast. it's an inland event. more trees and foilage. hurly is probably through winds about maybe 50 to 70 miles per hour winds. so that's where we could get power outages. mobile is going to be far enough away from the strong winds. gusts in the 50 miles per hour range. that will do it. further to the north. we go up towards at more, not too bad. these are strong bands coming out here. here's pence cola. we can get an isolated thord
10:25 pm
spin up. that's the concern that we'll go through during the over night. here's a wider view of the storm. you can see, there's nothing on the west side of this. nothing on the southern side. it's really only that north, northeast quadrant and the eastern quadrant where we have the stronger wind with what's left of the storm. and we get the bands coming in off the gulf. you worry about the tornado threat here. as we go throughout the morning. and tomorrow we'll have a threat of at least a few tornados. >> bill, why are we having there half crescent nature of this storm here? >> these storms suck in everything around them. and there was some dry air that was over the western gulf over texas. and over areas of louisiana. and now that it's sucks in the humid air and the dry air. that's choking off the eastern side of the storm. that's why the thunderstorms can't wrap around it. >> in it was not the half-moon size, would it have been stronger a bigger storm? >> the mature storms are.
10:26 pm
the major hurricanes. are more likely to be like that. the ones that are likely to -- if you can wrap around the center the center core. we were afraid of this. i woke up this morning looking at satellite. oh boy. there was a hurricane already this morning. i saw that nate had wrapped a core around itself and protect itself from dry air coming in. the hurricane center was saying a category 2 at land fall of 105 miles per hour winds. with gusts that would have been gusts up to 135. we got lucky. it fell apart late today. and that saved us from really wind damage. it doesn't look like we'll have a ton of wind damage. >> skm and it was a fast mover. 20 miles per hour. >> 28 miles per hour forward speed at one point this afternoon. the fastest we have measured a hurricane in the gulf of mexico. >> is it now you talk about
10:27 pm
lookout for the vet kalty of my map and the dots that are right behind us. wee seeing more of that moving north. >> the winds were parallel to the coast when we started. and now all the arrows are from south to the north. the water can pile up in the coast. as long as we keep the fetch from south to north the water can't escape. that's where you -- that's where you get the greatest concern. >> mobile, alabama because of the water coming downstream. and we see at least from your map here, these white dots pushing up. do they get smashed in the middle causing more storm surge? water is coming from both ways. >> you talk about. >> mobile. >> mobile bay. well, you can get that. the rainfall coming down from rivers trying to pour in at the same time the bays are filling up. and the jacksonville area with irma, their historic flood. was because the river was trying
10:28 pm
to come in at the same time the surge was coming. that's what happened this jacksonville with the flooding. the rainfall is not too bad. i have heard reports of three to 4 inches. it was really dry in the area. so that's why we're not talking about flooding. >> that worst case. some areas of the country. bill karens will stay us with. we'll take a short break. continue to follow hurricane nate. and the official call we do expect in moments. to be coming out of the national hurricane center. 2:00 at the latest. stay with us. medicine, but we know a lot about drama. from scandalous romance, to ridiculous plot twists.
