good night from msnbc news headquarters tonight. ♪ the danger has grown in california, deadly wildfires are raging destroys entire neighborhoods and killing at least 17 people. officials fear that number will grow. plus, several major hollywood stars breaking your silence accusing movie mogul harvey weinstein of sexual harassment. and in a new report three women claim they were sexually assaulted. and nbc document, showing north korea taking an aim contain with documents containing malware.

good morning, everyone. it's wednesday october 11th. i'm ayman mohyeldin alongside yasmin vossoughian and louis burgdorf. with a rising death toll, fire crews are struggling to contain more than a dozen wildfires burning across southern california right now. according to authorities at least 17 people have died as fast moving fires have pushed flames from neighborhood to neighborhood. the sonoma county sheriff's office said yesterday it had received over 200 reports of missing people. only 57 of which have been found. so far, more than 2,000 homes and buildings have been destroyed, state fire officials stay months of dry weather and winds clocking anywhere 30 to 50 miles per hour, are spreading the flames. >> the fires developed, and were promoted by these winds. with such speed, a lot of people had very -- not even a moment's notice to get out of its way.

>> and in southern california fire and rescue officials there say the so-called canyon fire, too, continues to burn but is no longer threatening anaheim neighborhoods. several evacuation orders were lifted last night. meanwhile, president trump has signed a disaster declaration in response to the california wildfires ordering federal funding be provided to help the state's firefighting efforts. >> i spoke with governor brown last night to let him know that the federal government will stand with the people of california, and we will be there for you in this time of terrible tragedy and need. and i just want to pay my warmest respects, they're going through a lot. >> let's go down to sonoma county, california, where special correspondent scott cohen is joining us, scott, thanks for talking to us. yesterday, we asked, are conditions getting any better? what's the status today, are we any closer to being able to tamp down this thing? >> reporter: well, not exactly,

at least not by the numbers, yasmin, you know, we started this on sunday night, into monday morning, now we're into wednesday morning. and there's still no containment of the major fire here sonoma county, and sonoma county is where most of the deaths have been from this event. all of these 17 fires have erupted in northern california almost at once. yes, we've had about 24 hours, maybe more of calm winds coming out of the west because there's more humidity because the winds are coming off the ocean. but it's kind of a window because now we're lacking at potential by this time tomorrow winds whipping up particularly in the hills where they're still doing evacuations. and then the winds shifting out of the north and out of the east. that's drier, that's not good so we have a bit of a window and hopefully we can make some headway. >> scott, let me ask you about these incredible images.

we're looking at pictures what appears to be a drone flying over scorched earth in santa rosa. let me ask you quickly about resources. in the past, we've seen resources from other parts of the country make their way to that region. are you seeing resources being diverted to the area to northern california from elsewhere? where are. >> reporter: well, no question about it. of course, you've got fires going on throughout the state but you've got fire resources gathering here in napa and sonoma counties where they're trying to get a hand on this. one of the issues, particularly yesterday, this area of smoke hugging the ground and they couldn't get the aircraft in the air that you normally see to fight the fires. so that's been an issue, too. today is going to be an incredible. >> unbelievable, seeing some the images it looks like a movie. >> yeah, it really does. >> scott cohn, thank you.

we're following the latest in the harvey weinstein. nbc's correspondent anne thompson has more. >> reporter: another seismic shock in hollywood. angelina jolie and gwyneth paltrow said they too were sexually harassed by weinstein. paltrow had just been fired for the movie and tells that weinstein put his hands on her and suggested they go to the bedroom for massages. i was a kid, petro said she left and told her then boyfriend brad pitt who confronted weinstein. jolie said she chose never to work with him again and warned others when they did. and another explosive story this time in the new yorker, mira sorvino and rosana arquette of many the women said to be

sexually hargsed by weinstein including three who said they were raped. any allegations of nonconsensual acts of sex were unequivocally denied by mr. weinstein. rona pharaoh who kibts to nbc news wrote the story. >> uncanny similarities exist between each of these women's stories. they talk about the pretext of a professional meeting that is then moved to a hotel, and a hotel room. many of them refer to officers of massage. >> reporter: today the former louisa geist telling what is a familiar story. >> he returned with nothing but a robe with the front open and he was buck naked. >> reporter: and gutierrez claimed weinstein appropriately touched her, new york police set up a sting which was recorded. >> why yesterday you touched my breasts. >> you're used to that. >> you're used to that. no, i'm not used to that.

>> reporter: the new york district attorney declined to press charges. >> 16 executives former and current talking about a climate in the company and how they witnessed inappropriate activity. >> reporter: the weinstein company did not open. it was a joke at the 2013 oscar nomination. >> congratulations, you five ladies no longer have to pretend to be attracted to harvey weinstein. >> reporter: finally, hillary clinton broke her silence about one of her major campaign donors saying she is shocked and appalled by weinstein's reported behavior. a movie titan accused of abusing power and women. >> and that was an thompson she'll be on later in the hour. and going overseas now the u.s. conducted a bilateral trading mission with japan and south korea flying strategic bombers in the vicinity of the

sea of japan-u.s. pacific command said it's the first time a b-1 has conducted night training with their japanese counterparts. it comes as nbc news has exclusively learned that hackers recently targeted the u.s. power grid using spearphishing containing malware. the e-mails were sent to multiple u.s. electric power companies however there's no evidence that the hacking attempts were successful. that reporting comes as a south korean lawmaker revealed yesterday that yesterday north korean hackers reach the computer network of the south korean military and stole a trove of data including contingency plans which reportedly includes the south korean's military quote. let's go to seoul, south korea, and bring in nbc's correspondent matt bradley. the abilities to hack have been widely known. some attribute the sony hacking

to north korea. but let's talk a little bit about what this means going forward for pyongyang's ability to conduct cyberwar fire in south korea and here in the u.s. >> thanks. as you mentioned these b-1b flighting they're troubling they've become a routine part of the tit for tat saber rattling that we been watching for the united states. but as you mentioned these cyber attacks are arguably even more troubling because they show cyberware capability conbehalf of the north koreans. now, remember, this isn't the first time as you said that north korean has shown an ability to attack. there was the infamous sony e-mail hacking. the interview that showed an attempt to assassinate kim jong-un that really infuriated the north koreans. and then there was an attack by the north koreans or thought to be by the north koreans on the

bangladeshi central bank. and they got tens of millions of dollars from the bangladeshis. and earlier this year, the north koreans are believed to be behind the so-called warner cry attack. and those proceeds were paid in bitcoin. this goes to show that the north korean capability with their nuclear program and missile program that's increasing but the cyberwarfare, that's something that we should pay attention to as well. >> we always think about it breaking out with military and guns but cyberwarfare is almost as lethal. matt bradley, thank you. president trump and secretary of state rex tillerson had a face-to-face sitdown at the white house yesterday, their second meeting since the president learned through nbc news reporting that his top diplomat called him, quote, a moron in their meeting last july. and "forbes" magazine published said he doubted the report if he

did that i guess we'll have to impair i.q. testings and i can tell you who's going to win. sitting down with richard nixon's secretary of state henry kissinger, the president actually responded to that comment, take a listen. >> would you comment with the secretary of state about undercutting -- >> no, i don't believe in undercutting anybody. thank you very much. >> afternoon the president affirmed his confidence in secretary of state rex tillerson, sarah huckabee sanders was asked how the i.q. comment would be perceived? >> how do you expect the secretary of state to be perceived when he was questioning his intelligence. >> he wasn't questioning his intelligence. maybe you guys should get a sense of humor and try it sometime. but he simply made a joke. >> but the president, however, has often made a point of his own intellectual superiority and

welcome back, everybody. turning now to las vegas, after the shocking revisions to the time line of last week's mass shooting in las vegas at the hotel security guard was shot before the deadly rampage began, mgm resorts is pushing back on that time line saying they have doubts on the statement released last night. quote, this remains an ongoing investigation with a lot of moving parts as evidenced by law enforcement briefings over the past week. many facts are still continuing to be verified. we cannot be certain about the most recent time line that has been communicated publicly and we believe what is currently being expressed may not be accurat accurate. scott pruitt has declared the end to the cold war. pruitt who serves as the head of the environmental protection agency yesterday signed the

paperwork to begin the process of rolling back the obama era clean power plan. the repeal is part of the process to help the struggling coal industry. pruitt also announced the epa would consider a new rule to curb the release of greenhouse gas emissions. democrats in, north carolina and oregon all preparing to challenge. let's get a check of your weather with meteorologist bonnie schneider. and bonnie, you're keeping a close eye on northern california, right now, specifically the wind as wildfires continue to rage. >> that's right, lewis. northern california and southern california also because we have low long islandty with winds gusting to 35 miles per hour and that continues to threat for the weekend. let's take a look at the wildfire season as a whole. it's really been incredible because we already have 8.5 million acres burned and that is unbelievable. look at the amount of money spent, $2.3 billion. that has now set a new record

nfl said weather support the nfl telling players to stand. and jerry jones is reportedly filing a complaint against a lyle labor union. the complaint alleges jones violated the national labor relations act setting his threats to discipline who join the national anthem protest. meanwhile in the nhl, tampa bay lightning's j.t. brown said he received death threats after he raised his fists during a game on saturday. let's go to the game four of the nlds matchup in chicago between the gnashes and cubs was rained out. instead the game will be played this afternoon. the cubs lead that series two games to one. and what is being called a shocking embarrassment the united states men's soccer team has failed -- that's right, failed to qualify for the 2018 world cup in russia.

it's the first time this has happened since back in 1986. the club needed just a sole point in yesterday's matchup against last place trinidad and tobago to secure a spot. they lost the game 2-1 in a game which included an early goal on the american side. after the loss, u.s. soccer tweeted out, quote, devastated. but we are forever grateful to all of our supporters persevere. this marks a turning point in how u.s. soccer is run. >> i couldn't agree more. i woke up this morning very disappointed to see that head line, because as louis was saying is this a generation of american soccer players, many of them playing in top flight european clubs. there was a lot of hope for the americans. but this has been a very rough year for them. they changed coaches in the middle of qualifying rounds and i think a lot of people are expecting fundamental change demonstrate the way the u.s. federation of soccer is run.

provided to help the state's firefighting efforts. >> joining us from sonoma county, california, special correspondent for nbc news, scott cohn. talk to us about the efforts under way. >> reporter: well, the efforts are still going on, you know, here we are, more than 48 hours into, and they're still doing evacuations, particularly the areas up in the hills. presumably a bill more orderly that far the evacuations here known as coffee park where people had to basically run out of their homes and that's how quickly the fire ran through here. that's been the issue, the major fire noub as the tubbs fire here in so home that, 11 of the 17 deaths isn't sonoma county, one of them here in coffee park. what they've been dealing with is try to get a handle on all of that and then dealing with the conditions. the winds have died down.

that's important. this is going to be an important day to try to get some handle on this fire which is now not at all contained, zero can containment. here we are in the third day. >> scott, where are people being evacuated to that lost their homes in these incredible images coming out of that area. and also how are they dealing with this, knowing once they return to their neighborhoods nothing could be left? >> reporter: yeah, and if you can imagine that, you evacuate with nothing other than basically the clothes on your back and not knowing what's going to happen to your home. and you realize, you see pictures like this, you realize that's what you're going to come back to, there are two dozen shelters open, a full of them are full, but not all of them, people are going to places like that and wherever else they can go, knowing at some point they're going to come back to a great deal of heartbreak. >> scott kohn, thank you very

much. another major story that we're following, the number of hollywood actresses coming officer with about queuizations against harvey weinstein is continuing to grow. some now claiming that the former film executive sexually assaulted them. new allegations emerged yesterday in back to back reports in "the new york times" and the new yorker magazine. actresses gwyneth paltrow and angelina jolie both describe harvey weinstein, jolie meanwhile told the tooils in an e-mail that she had a, quote, bad experience with harvey weinstein in my youth and as a result chose never to work with him again and warned others when they did. meanwhile in a report in the new yorker, roland farrow was told by 13 women that weinstein assaulted them.

three women told him that weinstein had forced himself on them. the magazine also released the following audio recording it says of weinstein trying to persuade a model to come into his hotel room back in 2015. >> please come in now in one minute, when the -- you you -- >> why yesterday you touched my breasts. >> i'm used to that. >> i'm used to that? no, i'm not used to that. >> sit here for a minute, please. >> no i don't want. if you do this now you'll -- bye. never call me again. k, i promise you i won't do anything. >> i know but yesterday -- >> i will never do another thing to you, five minutes. don't ruin your friendship with me for five minute. >> is that was reported in a nypd sting. it was unbelievable that

weinstein was not criminally charged at the time with all of the new allegations against harvey weinstein the board of directors at his former company released a statement that read in part, these alleged actions are antithetical to human decency. and these allegations come as an utter surprise to the board. and ceo michael eisner who bought miramax tweeted this out fired weinsteins because they were irresponsible and harvey was an incorrespoigible bully. >> and president obama and former secretary of state hillary clinton denounced weinstein. in a statement, mr. obama wrote michelle and i have been disgusted by the recent reports about harvey weinstein. any man who demeans and degrades women in such fashion needs to

be condemned and held accountable regarding of wealth or status. we should be celebrating the courage of women who have come forward to tell these painful stories. mrs. clinton said that i was shocked and appalled by the revelations about harvey weinstein. the behavior described by women coming forward cannot be tolerated. the courage and support of others is critical in helping to stop this kind of behavior. >> and as the fall continue stos mount, weinstein has reportedly checked himself into rehab. and a spokesman said any allegations of unsex are unequivocally has denied. his wife of a decade has announced she's separating him from. willie and joe will have much more when ronan farrow joining the conversation to discuss this report with the new yorker. turning to politics, there's

new information on the investigation of the russian meddling on capitol hill. foreign policy adviser carter page has informed the intelligence committee that he will not appear before the panel. page met with high-level associates in moscow in 2016 and it's unclear if the committee has sent a formal request for page to testify. meanwhile, on the house side, intelligence committee share devin nunez under the dossier, despite recusing himself in the investigation and without telling democrats. in a statement to nbc news, a lawyer for fusion gps called the move a blatant attempt to undermine the dossier's reporting even though it's an assessment that russia tried influence the u.s. the election has been confirmed by the u.s. intelligence committee. president trump's popularity in all 50 states is on the decline. that's a new finding of polls by the morning consult which measured his slide in january

20th to late september. his net approval rating dropped by double digits with his disapproval rating now above 50% in iowa, michigan, wisconsin, arizona and pennsylvania. by party, the president dropped 25 points among democrats. 18 points among independents and nine points among republicans. the trump administration set to propose changes to the north american free trade agreement that could prove controversial. sources tell cnbc that the goods and duty-free requirements, the proposal is expected to face strong opposition from mexico and canada as well as congress and the american business community. president trump has long been a critic of nafta. and resistance to the new demands could give him justification to pull out of the trade deal altogether. the fourth round of nafta talks begin today in washington. let's turn to the business

world. a decade high fears over catalonia declaring independence from spain have eased. china alibaba has announced a major investment for new technologies. the fears over the catalonia referendum are easing just a bit? >> yes, definitely. spanish stocks are rallying with banks being the best performers this is after the catalan leader carlos pughdemont. with the starting trading day at least to the dow, we saw another record high at the end of the session and yesterday's close. much of that down to walmart. we'll come and talk about that in a few minutes.

if fmc minutes is the data to watch. the chinese giant alibaba will be spending $15 million in research around the world this will be focused on things like artificial intelligence and logistics it's not a big surprise because beijing has been pressing to excel in all of those areas. >> let's take a look at walmart. they've announced to take an upper hand as the competition between amazon and retail giants intensifies. >> shares in walmart she soared in the trading session. to investors saying, first of all, e-commerce sales are going to grow by 40%. it seems like some of their efforts to go up against amazon they're actually working like buying jet.com for $40 million. last quarter alone e-commerce sales at walmart were actually up by 60%. the company announced share
