it's thursday. october 12. the situation in california is growing more urgent by the day. deadly wildfires rage across the northern part of the state. death toll has risen to 23. 8,000 firefighters have been deployed and fighting the flames by air and ground. dealing with hundreds of missing persons reports. search efforts complicated by destroyed cell towers. 3500 homes and businesses have burned to the ground and in some areas entire neighbors are completely gone. look at imagies on the screen. at least 115,000 acres have been torched so far. two and a half times the size of washington, d.c. >> despite the fact we've been covering this for a couple of days now. we'll rebuild somehow. we'll go on. we'll either do it here or somewhere else and we'll get more stuff. we'll never have the time to replace what we've lost.

it hurts. it's going to be difficult for a long time. it will take a long time to recover. >> let's go down to santa rosa. scott, we've been kcovering thi for the last couple of days. still the images are shocking. concerns many of the wildfires can form one big blaze. what more can you tell us about that. >> that is one of the many concerns they're dealing with. the immediate concern right now is the same wind pattern that basically laid waste to this neighborhood, coffee park and santa rosa were creating a flame thrower affect. that wind pattern is coming back. winds out of the north are picking up again. you can't tell from where i am. you get up in the hills where the fire is, that is becoming

increasingly an issue. it could merge fires into as you said larger fires. and it's sparked more evacuations. the town of 5,000 people over in nap pavally. nap paa. oftentimes when you think of hurricane, there are sheltners place. efforts to try to help the folks being moved out of the areas. fires moving so fast and kinds of sometimes jumps lines and going in different directions, where are people being evacuated to. or are they out on their own.

vice president mike pence joins republican candidate for an event that same day. back to top stories, deadly wildfires ravages california. let's go to santa rosa. scott cohen is standing by for us. you've been in the area for some time. home after home has been burned down within a couple of minutes. what are you seeing this morning. well, it's pretty amazing. you look around you. this is the coffee park neighborhood in santa rosa. the fire just came through almost like a flame thrower literally on sunday night. these homes and 80,000 people live here. the concern is the same wind pattern that fuelled that on sunday is kicking up again. they had a couple of days to make progress on the fire. the tub fire, main fire in sonoma county which was not contained when we talked

yesterday is now 10% contained. all of that progress could be undone as the winds kick up again. only a light breeze where i am now. when you get up in the hills where the fire is, that is just the worst possible situation. not just the winds kicking up. the winds have shifted. it was this offshore -- on shore wind i should say bringing in moisture from the pacific ocean from the west for the last day and a half. now it's a dry wind from the north. that's a problem. there have been new evacuations overnight, areas around here. some mandatory. some advisory. at least in theory. they're telling people you should get out now. things could get worse. this is what they're dealing with in what has become one of the most destructive and one of the most deadly sets of fires in california history. >> you mentioned still 600 people missing. that's a great cause of concern for officials and authorities there. scott cohen live for us in california. thank you very much. now to politics.

nbc news learned that president trump asked john kelly, to be the next secretary of homeland security. nielsen joined back in september. reports this could be a sign kelly is on the way out. report claims kelly is miserable and remaining out of a sense of duty and republicans think he wanted to give his long time aide a soft landing. reports republicans and trump advisers describing a white house in crisis. advisers struggle to contain a prosecute who seems to be unfocused. consumed. the words unstable and unraveling were also used. sherman also reports on a conversation several months ago former chief of staff steve bannon told trump to risk to his presidency wasn't impeachment, but the 25th amendment, the

the president's plan today. >> look, this really made headlines overnight. we had a reported by the "new york times" also the wall street journal that president trump is planning to sign an executive order in an effort to undermine and under cut obamacare. as part of that move, trump will reportedly instruct the agencies to allow greater sales of cheaper and less comprehensive health care plans and that would promote further competition. on the other hand critics saying this might be attracting more younger customers. this could be at the expense of older and sicker people. we'll see whether that actually goes through. now to round of negotiations has begun yesterday. we know president trump is not a big fan of this. in the past he called it a disaster and worst deal in history. reiterated yesterday he might drop out of the deal. also said he might just strike a deal with canada alone or with mexico independently.
