2:00 pm
profiler clint. i know it's been a tough sunday so far but we still don't have a lot of answers. jim, i'm going to start with you. what are investigators looking at right now? >> right now it's all about the killer who is he and why he did this? is there anything else that he may have planned that they need to put a stop to. we've seen killers like this, the examples are colorado where he boopy trapped his apartment with bombs and explosive devices so when a neighbor -- he wanted to entrap a neighbor with loud music. law enforcement officers were able to diffuse those bombs. the local bomb squad, they all did a great job on that. we find that a lot of times over the years with shooters and these wild men that they have guns, they have explosives, so they got to be prepared for that. looks like they've swept his car okay but the crime scene teams
2:01 pm
are moving through that vehicle that you've had on the aerial shot. they'll have to do that at his residence as well. was there any other thing he left. these guys can be very die bolcal trying to leave some bombs or poison or any other thing around that they got to make sure that nobody else can get hurt even after they're deceased. that's a task for the commanders today. also this crime scene, the injured, tending to all that. there's not going to be a prosecution if he's the lone actor and if he's the lone actor there won't be prosecution for a murder but they'll try to get some answers for these texans that were killed just worshipping in their church, it's a sad day for america to see this again and again. when you gather in a place like a church or a movie theater or a concert, your fixed on why
2:02 pm
you're there, you're fixed on worship or fixed on the music or fixed on the movie. you're fixed on these things so your back -- your back is exposed and that's why you got to have security. the military and police they say the six -- i've got your six meaning your back on the clock and whose got your back when you're fixated on a show, a concert, a movie, a church. so organizers, community leaders need to think of that. we're living in a daily and time where one man, one rifle can do the kind of slaughter we see today. this is all it takes. there's no training. it doesn't take any training. if they can get in a room, if they got the guns and the ammo, you can't stop them if nobody else has a suitable guns and ammo to stop them. and even if you do it's an ambush. you're coming out short any way. if you're ambushed, you know, even if you have a side arm, i might not get it out of the
2:03 pm
holster. it's devastating. you got to be prepared. you got to think security. it's sad but that's the world we're living in and it's happening at schools and churches and concerts and the businesses and every place else. so tragically it went to a quiet community in southern texas and this just rips peoples' lives apart for no reason and no matter what the reason we find, you talked earlier with clint about it, it'll be grossly unsatisfactory when you find out the reason. >> it always is. >> hold on for a second. you brought up a good point. you think about the vulnerability about this church. jim and clint, stand by. i want to bring in ken paxton the texas attorney general whose standing by. ken, i appreciate you joining us on this very tragic sunday afternoon. i can't imagine what that town is dealing with, your state is dealing with, just an unbelievable time. the loss of life, our own pete
2:04 pm
williams reporting now that at least 25 people are dead, at least 25 people are dead which means it very likely could be more. ken, what are you hearing? >> caller: well, you know, we weren't expecting this. we didn't have anybody on the ground from my office. we are not the first responders in this. we typically will step in and help with investigations if we're asked to. i'm hearing a lot of the same reports that you are. this has devastating impact on this small community. wilson county is a small county so everybody in that -- everybody in that area knows somebody at that church or is friends with somebody. it's going to have a devastating impact on that community. >> so where does the investigation go from here, ken? what are authorities honing in on right now? >> so i think obviously focus on the shooter, what motivated the shooter and i think your previous guest mentioned to see if there's anything else he left behind that could potentially harm people. the focus first is going to be on that shooter and what's left
2:05 pm
behind and see what maybe motivated this person if we can figure that out. >> do you know anything about this shooter? the motivation? who this could be? hearing a couple theories from our experts whether or not the shooter was connected to the church, was the spouse of someone who attended that church, attended that church themselves or had zero connection? was motivated religiously or politically bill something completely out of the realm of what we're seeing? is there anything that you're learning with regards to this shooter, the motivation or the makeup of who this person is, where they're from? >> i think the focus so far has been on dealing with the people who are deceased and dealing with the injured and so law enforcement is really -- has been really focused on that even more than trying to figure out what the motivation of the shooter is. as the state goes on, we still -- as they've gotten the injured to the right place, you'll see more of a focus on addressing the very question
2:06 pm
that you're talking about. >> talk about the local coordinate nation that this community will now see that the fbi and atf arriving on the scene? >> i think you can see how things worked in coordinating efforts after the hurricane and the massive flooding along the gulf coast, houston, see how our governor coordinated with the administration and local law enforcement. i think you'll see the exact same thing here. governor abbott is already on his way down there and certainly engaged in making sure that that coordination goes well. >> governor abbott did tweet out that he's in route and he did mention that a public briefing is to follow. we are waiting that as everyone that's watching can see that on their screen. we are waiting for someone to come to that podium, the motivation of the shooter, the victims, all of those affected. a lot of questions, not a lot of
2:07 pm
answers. ken, talk to me about what you know about this community in general. >> it's a small county, small community about 30 miles southeast of san antonio. so it's not largely populated and as you know this was a very, very small church, so there's -- there's like i said there's -- it's going to be a devastating impact on this community given the fact that it is so small and everyone likely knows somebody at that church either killed or injured. >> do you have preparations in your place in your state to deal with stuff like this? as sad as it is, these sort of tragedies and shootings are becoming more commonplace than we'd like to think? >> what needs to happen, churches are going to have start churches, schools, businesses, are going to have to start putting policies in place for how they're going to deal with potential shooters coming into their building. you can't have local law
2:08 pm
enforcement at every place of business or church or school. their needs to be a policy of how to address a shooter coming into your place of business or church or school and trying to harm children. i think that is something we'll have to think more about as a state and as a nation. >> how do you institute something like that considering these are churches afterall? these aren't government buildings. these are small churches. this is a place of worship. this is where someone goes on a sunday to get reprieve to reenergize themselves to speak to whoever it is that they're worshipping and then to talk to them about putting security measures in place, putting security guards at their doors, that is a really hard reality to swallow for people? >> i don't disagree with that. i go tie large church in dallas. we have plenty of security there. nol one expects this but we have security on the ground every sunday who are watching.
2:09 pm
there are cameras. so it's just sad that that's the place that we're in but i think more churches and like i said more businesses and more schools are going to have to think through, you know, the reality that this could happen anywhere and we know that because it just happened in wilson county. this wasn't new york city, chicago or dallas. this happens everywhere. >> yeah. how does a community -- how does a community -- i mean, it's hard to even ask this question really just a couple hours into all of this, how do you go to sleep tonight? >> you know what? i don't know that you do. i think it would be very difficult if you lost a child or you lost a friend to go to sleep. what i have seen in texas over and over is people rally and they show up to help. churches, nonl profits, just people in general will rally around these people and they'll feel the support but there's no way that you can get rid of the greenville and devastation to a family's that's lost somebody like this in a tragic unnecessary incident. >> have you spoken to any
2:10 pm
leaders in the area and heard what they had to say, what they're dealing with so far? >> i really haven't wanted to because i want leaders in the area focused on helping the about injured and making sure that they also -- there's going to be a lot of work going to families and letting them know what happened. my focus is really on just being available for whatever they need us for and not interfering with addressing really critical -- what i would consider immediate needs. >> yeah. ken paxton, the texas attorney general. i appreciate you joining me on a sunday afternoon. thank you for joining us. >> keep us in your prayers. >> absolutely. i want to turn on nbc news pete williams whose standing by with us for an update. pete, what do you got? >> i think what the attorney general said pretty well summarized. there are a number of federal agencies on the scene, fbi, atf but at this point it's all helping with the victims and evidence collection because
2:11 pm
obviously the law enforcement authorities that are normally there are completely overwhelmed by this given the number of people that have apparently been killed. it's some are going to be some where between 25 and 30. the latest number we heard was as many as 28 all though the official number at this point from the sheriff is 25 but we'll get more information in that news conference begins, so a number of the victims are children, so and of course the big logistical challenge is getting everybody who is seriously injured to hospitals. you heard the attorney general say that san antonio's 30 miles away so there's some distance required, some distance involved in getting these people to where they can get the kind of help they need. so everybody we've talked to says the same thing, they don't yet know what the motive is. we have not yet heard any indication that this is terrorism. of course if they don't know what the motive is they can't say what it is not.
2:12 pm
but there are no indicators so far of terrorism that we've heard of, so the number of other possibilities come to mind but we just don't know what it is at this point. we do know, we've been told by some authorities in texas that the gunman was from texas, was from a neighboring county, it's just very near the county that this community sutherland springs is in which is very small. it's about 650 or so people in the last census so a very small community. as we've been reporting there was apparently a chase after the shooting and the gunman was eventually killed but we are told that he is from texas, from this neighboring county. so it's going to be a while before we know why this happened if we ever know why or some idea of what the motive probably is, there's no indication at this point if that this is any kind of act of terrorism.
2:13 pm
>> so in case people missed that, i want people to hear that once again, that we are hearing information from pete just reporting that the shooter is from a neighboring county, camal county and poby 25 people upwards dead at that church there in texas and children amongst those victims, which makes it so much more tragic. >> the other thing i would add is, some of the witnesses have said and this would account for the large number of victims in such a short time, many of the victims have said they heard what sounded to them like semi-automatic weapons fired, very rapid fire, so we'll know shortly what the weapon was as well and that may explain why there's so many casualties. >> we are trying to figure out the weapon that was used there and investigators are going to be honing in on that in the next hour or days and weeks to come. talk about the federal response
2:14 pm
that we're hearing so far. >> as i say, at this point, this is -- this is a local police investigation for texas authorities. murder is not a federal crime unless there's some other aspect to it so the fbi and the atf are helping in the incredibly difficult chore of, first of all, aiding victims but second pli collecting evidence. they have to go through the crime scene there which of course is agonizing and they're help is right now focused that way. once they have a good idea on the suspect then i think they probably do, then the federal authorities and the texas state authorities can help search that person's car, search that persons' home, to see if there's any indication, anything left behind on what might have prompted this person to do this. >> pete, i appreciate you joining me. sand by. i know you'll be bringing us up-to-date later on in the evening so i very much appreciate you standing by and
2:15 pm
bringing us up to date. i will want to read a tweet from gabrielle giffords now. i am heartbroken to hear that once again a place for peace and prayer became a scene of horror and fear someone who knows tragedy like nobody else, gaby giffords as we all know. i want to bring in zack hedge rick from news 4 in san antonio who i believe is on the ground there and is joining us by the phone. zack, i appreciate you joining us this afternoon. bring us up-to-date as to what you're hearing and what you're seeing on the ground there. >> hi, good afternoon, guys. we're just across the street from the community center right now but here just been the past five minutes we've had some new developments. some of the state troopers have come over and actually told us this community center's just a block away from the first baptist church and we just learned from the state troopers that they found some shell
2:16 pm
casings in the area where we were standing in between the church and the community center. this crime scene has expanded and some other media outlets and we've been asked to move and we're in the process of moving right now. just to describe the scene here at the community center, friends, family, family members, relatives they've all been coming here to this spot for the past several hours. the crowd is just grown. you see people hugging, just consoling each other because this is a very tight knit community. i spoke with another pastor of a church just up the road from the first baptist church whose name is frank buford. they were in sunday service when they heard about the shooting and immediately that congregation sprung into action. we've seen people bringing in food, water, supplies, anything to help the families of those affected and we've even had some
2:17 pm
folks out from the red cross there on scene at the community center to help the folks from sutherland springs. >> what are you seeing in regards to the scene there? from what i hear reports that this is a population of anywhere from 500 to 600 people. 25 plus people victims of this shooting, 24 or so more people injured. children amongst these victims. what are you seeing with regards to people on the ground, how they're reacting to all of this? what are they saying to you if you've had an opportunity to talk to anybody? >> yeah. it's very limited on information because the briefings are happening someplace else over in stockdale, but i know it looks like some law enforcement officers are coming over when they can to give out what information they're able to give out, so it's just in piecemeal here. it's just seems like these
2:18 pm
people are standing around, i see people on their phones supposedly just talking to relatives, giving what information they know so they can keep everybody on the same page. >> have you talked to anybody about this church, what it's like, how many people attended this church, what they know about the service time? the shooter apparently walking in around 11:00 a.m. local time. what are people saying in regards to that? >> that is just speaking to other pastors they're saying it's a busy time, a busy time for people coming in -- going to church and as to how many were there, i can't say for certain just because nobody was inside the church. i haven't come across anybody who was there at the first baptist church yet, put and i'm sorry i'm actually getting motioned here to move on out
2:19 pm
because the law enforcement officers are actually getting ready to expand the scene here. >> i very much understand. very much appreciate you joining me this afternoon. if you get any new information we appreciate you giving us a call back in and giving that to us. and again we are awaiting a press conference from authorities in that area to get more information about what took place at that church there. 25 plus victims, children among those victims. a shooter walking in around 11:30 a.m. local time. hours later, so many questions. we do know that the shooter is dead. we are also learning that this is the worst mass shooting at a house of worship in u.s. history which is unbelievable to think about. i keep reiterating the scope of this thing. if you think about the population of this town, 500 to 600 people, 25 of those citizens now dead. you can only imagine what that community is dealing with today. i want to bring in nbc's kyle perry whose been standing by for
2:20 pm
us. cal, what do you got? >> when you take a look at the numbers of this small town, one in 15 of those residents today were shot at this now the fifth deadfullyiest mass shooting in modern american history. we're joined on the phone by tony, can you hear me, sir? >> i can. >> where are you in relation to the church? we're looking at these photographs as authorities continue to swarm the scene, what are you looking at where you are on the ground there? >> so i am sitting in the parking lot of a valero station that is just across the from the church and i was talking to a man a little bit earlier who lives across the street and he described aching church goers running for their lives across the field toward this valero station coming here to get away from gunfire and try to seek safety, but again as you can
2:21 pm
imagine, a massive law enforcement presence here in this block just outside the church, federal, state, local authorities here as well and as in other areas we too have seen family members of church members who have been coming here wanting to get information. obviously in shock and disbelief that this had happened here earlier today. >> tony, can you talk a little bit about the town? this is west texas. this is open big sky country. everybody knows everybody else. i cannot imagine what life is going to be like in this town. i would imagine that everybody knows everybody, is that a fair assessment? >> from what we are seeing and hearing and, you know, to call it a town, it's really almost more of a community. there is a post office here. it's within inside the church. there's a gas station here. but it is a really, really small community. we are talking about a deeply
2:22 pm
rural area that really sits at the intersection of two lane roads and just driving here from austin earlier today, it is a path of two lane road to reach this location, but again, obviously that is all changing now as law enforcement from across this area and really across the country pour into this community here this afternoon to try to figure out why all of this happened. >> to our viewers, you are seeing there a press conference getting ready to get under way. we're standing by for an update from authorities. tony is at a gas station near the church where people fled. the shooter is dead but tony if you could expand on what you were talking about, this community, this is rural texas, this is a sunday. i would imagine that this very small church was packed. i do want to tell our viewers that this church does have a
2:23 pm
youtube channel and it does put up its worship on youtube. i think it's likely that we will continue to troll the internet for videos but talk about what you're calling this very tightly knit community on a sunday having to now deal with gun violence at an extreme level? >> that's right. i actually grew up in a community that is very similar to this one and what i'm hearing from people and it was like this when i was growing up is that church, there's not a lot to do, frankly in a community this size and so church becomes the hub of social life, of spending time together and it is really through those church connections that people really build an extended family. they do become family and they see each other on sunday mornings or maybe also on wednesday nights as well. one of the things that really
2:24 pm
struck me and it's just so haunting to see is that the first baptist church here has a sign, a billboard outfront advertising their fall festival which was apparently a few nights ago on october 31st, so to think that, you know, just a few nights ago this church was the scene of, you know, a joyous time obviously, church goers getting ready to all usher in fall here together and now have it be the scene of the nation's mass shooting is just obviously baffling and striking and of course extremely sad for the town people here. >> tony, thank you so much for your time there painting really a horrifying picture of a small community in america going through the unimaginable. please stay with us. we'll have that briefing from authorities on the other side of this break.
2:25 pm

2:28 pm
we're following a breaking news story out of texas. if you are just joining us, we are at the bottom of the hour. i want to bring everybody up to date as to what you're seeing. just about 20 miles east of san antonio, texas, you see that podium there. we are waiting a press conference from authorities in that area to bring us up to date as to the shooter, the number of victims and everything they know and they can tell us as to what took place in that very small tranquil community as many are describing it. let me bring you the details that we know. about 11:30 a.m. central time a shooter opened fire with about 50 or 60 occupants inside. a small community near san antonio, texas. so far what we know, at least, at least 25 people have been killed, children amongst those victims. six victims were sent to a nearby hospital and a local affiliate woai can confirm ten gun shot victims now being
2:29 pm
treated at san antonio university hospital. also four more victims were sent from another hospital to the university and six were directly on their way to university hospital. these victims including five adults and one child, but again like i said, at least 25 victims in this shooting and many more injured as well. the fbi and the atf are both responding and either on their way to the scene or at the scene now helping with this investigation to figure out exactly what took place there. the motive and the identity of the suspect completely unknown. we are learning more, though, sort of a trickle in of information with regards to the shooter and i'm sure when that press conference gets started we'll learn a heck of a lot more because a lot of people have that question as to who that person is, what would motivate someone to do something like this to make sure it doesn't happen again but we live in a world now where it seems like every week we're reporting on something like this and that is tragic to say outloud as well.
2:30 pm
worse mass shooting in a house of worship in u.s. history. let that seep in. the worse mass shooting in a house of worship in u.s. history. this town 500 to 600 people, 25 plus victims. think about that scope. think about if you live in that town and you're going to bed at night and knowing that 25 people in your community, someone you said hi to every single day is no longer there along with their child. it's that awful. it is that tragic today on a sunday afternoon. governor abbott releasing a statement saying quote, whielg the details of this horrific act are still under investigation, is a sillia and i want to send our thoughts and prayers to all of those who have been affected by this evil act. i will want to thank law enforcement for their response and ask that all texans pray for the sutherland springs community during this time of mourning and loss. also releasing a statement saying, the thoughts and prayers of all texans are with the
2:31 pm
people of sutherland springs as tragic reports come out of first baptist church. my office stands ready to assist local law enforcement as-needed. please join angelina and me as we pray for those impacted by this horrific shooting. we're hearing from our president as well and he tweeted an hour -- a couple of hours or so ago, may god be with the people of sutherland springs, texas. the fbi and law enforcement are on the scene. i'm monitoring the situation from japan. i want to bring in some of my panel now whose been standing by with us and has been with me for the last couple of hours or so and i appreciate you guys sticking with me through this sunday afternoon. it's not where any of us want to be, let's be honest especially reporting on something like this. let's talk about what we've learned so far about the shooter and it's not a lot. clint, i'm going to go to you on this first. >> sure. >> what we are learning is this
2:32 pm
person may be from a community outside of this, outside their sutherland spring, texas. a next door county, a neighboring county like i said. the guy ran as we heard. he ran and he was pursued by police and shot after running from the area. we know that investigators are searching the car of the shooter as well that we saw on our tv screens a little bit earlier. we know that there were -- there are more casings, shell casings in the area as well. the crime scene is becoming larger from the reporter that we heard than we first thought. the crime scene is larger beyond it seems the church. the area of that church. asking the press to move back because of those shell casings that were found further away from the church. from everything that you've learned and it's not a lot, clint, it's not a lot, what do you dedeuce so far? >> this seems to be more of a personalized than the random
2:33 pm
shooting. in essence we're told that the individual lives in a nearby community, so i think it's more likely that he targeted this church specifically either because of the church, the religious background, a member of the church, an ex-spouse, something like this brought this individual particularly to this house of worship where it appears now that he either killed or wounded every other person who was actually inside that building at that time. unlike the las vegas shooting that's taken a few weeks to understand, law enforcement will very quickly develop a motive. he'll be known in that local community. he'll be known, unfortunately, by members of that congregation and whatever anger, frustration, rage, mental illness brought this about, i think law enforcement will have a handle on that very quickly.
2:34 pm
it doesn't mean you and i and your audience can understand why someone can do something like this, but it means we'll have a handle on who he is and why he did this and again, one more time in our country it brings up the issue of church security. what should church security look like? i think that's up to each individual church, house of worship to make a determination what type of security they need but it's something i would suggest that each house of worship will probably be discussing within this next week. >> clint, does this shooter seem like something who was buttoned up? does it seem like someone who may have crossed his t's and dotted his i's? does this seem like someone who may have left a trail? >> this is someone who left a trail. it's easy to go to a baptist church and say at 11:30 you're going to find all the members of
2:35 pm
the congregation seated inside that church. that doesn't take a lot of heavy lifting. he either knew it personally from somebody else. he knew it from the web page. he went there it sounds like someone who had multi-magazines, a lot of rounds for its weapon, whether it be a semi-automatic rifle or handgun. he probably shot up just about everything he had left and then he ran jumped in a car and left. where's someone like this going to run to. where they going to hide? we find so many mass shooters and realize there's been over 60 mass shootings in this country where one or more people have been killed just this year over 60 different times, most of the time you find out they have nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide. they will don't have an escape plan, they just get in the car if they can or runaway and hide. the shooter in las vegas had no real escape plan. he barricaded himself in. he wasn't going anywhere. we'll find out this guy probably
2:36 pm
thought he could get away from the scene but there was nowhere he was going to go. he acted out for whatever reason at that church more than likely knew he was going to die, whether it be at the hand of law enforcement or whether he committed suicide. we'll find that out and you know what? tomorrow, you and i and your audience will be sitting there saying, one more time, one more copycat for lack of a better term who couldn't find a way to vent his anger, frustration and rage other than by mass murder. >> it's a basic question, to ask it's a basic question to ask but it's one that's in my mind and i want to put it out there because i feel like it's what a lot of people are thinking and you've profiled a lot of these types of people, this is your job, what type of person psychologically walks into a church and opens fire on the congregation and
2:37 pm
kills children? >> many times and malcolm will jump in and jeff kavanagh, this is someone who assembled, who saves any type of issues against them, if they've been -- if they feel neglected, if they feel that they've been overlooked, if they feel they've been wronged, this is someone who accumulates those. just like, you know, we may save postage stamp or save marbles. a person like this accumulates insults and to the person where he or she feels they are justified in reaching out and acting out because they think so many insults have taken place. what the challenge in our country is, people still look at violence as a form of conflict resolution and until we find a way to bring kids up teaching them there's a talking cure not a shooting cure, until we take points away -- you don't get
2:38 pm
points in shooting games and until we change this culture we have, we are going to continue to see copy cats as people look watch on television here in the immediate i can't remember and they say a-ha, that's a way i can even the score too and unfortunately time after time they do the same thing all over again and we wring our hands and say it's the guns, it's the magazines, it's the mentality and in reality is it's all of those and more. >> malcolm, how do you change violence as a means of conflict resolution within the same conversation we're also talking about making sure that churches and houses of wore shirp are more secure by placing armed individuals to ramp up security measures because of the shootings happening across the country? that's not the same message as making sure violence is no longer a means of conflict resolution? >> putting security there is just a post incident security measure that is should be taken

in the short-term. what you're talking about is a national issue here. we're going to talk about this issue. because i hear the exact same thing after terrorist attacks and i hear the exact same thing after mass shootings, that, you know, these things aren't the weapons systems themselves. they're a combination of things. we have individuals in this country who -- because of our culture, because of the nature of this country, this is -- this is a country that is rural the minute you're outside of the -- of your local village or hamlet or walmart. it becomes very rural very quick. we have this mentality that stems back to the beginning of this country. that you have to have safety, some measure of safety with yourself. we have a lot of law enforcement here too. we have a million cops, but for the most part, you know, these individuals who come as clint says with pentup frustrations, the weapon itself is his method

texas. like this community in which this shooting happened, not far from san antonio. the federal and the local authorities are preparing now to search his house to see what they can find out about any possible motive. these searches always take a while because when there's something like this where someone obviously has no regard for human life, they have to make sure that the house isn't booby-trapped or anything else before they enter. so it's going to be a long process of entering the house once they get the legal authority to do so. the search warrant, which i believe they now have. they're preparing to search the house and that's going to take a while. we don't know much about this person. we're told by a number of eyewitnesses and people in the community that he was known to them, but what his connection to the church is we don't know. in other words, several people in the community say they were aware of him, he has some
2:57 pm
relatives in the community, but what the connection is and of course what the motive is we still don't know. i think one of the reasons why we keep getting told by the authorities that we're talking to that they don't know the identity is that they haven't -- knock -- there's nothing obvious here. we are told by several authorities that there's no obvious connection to terrorism. but what the motive is is going to take some time. they'll obviously look through the person's social media, who this person was in touch with, all of those sorts of things take time. whatever they may learn from talking to relatives and family members and friends and searching the house to see if they could find anything. so things are moving pretty rapidly as we suspected they might. but it's going to be a while before we have any definitive word on what the motive may be and there's always a possibility that they can never say it when
2:58 pm
the gunman himself was killed or shot himself. we don't know which of those two is the reason he's dead. perhaps we'd learn more from the news conference. >> pete william, stay on top of this as i know you will. you'll bring us more updates as you get them. thanks. i want to bring clint van zandt back into the conversation. former fbi profiler who has worked on a lot of stuff like this, sadly. it's a tough job for you, i know. you have seen a lot of various situations like this one so i wanted to bring everybody up to date as to what we know about the shooter. so you can give us even more information as to what your hunch tells you. your experience with this tells you. law enforcement officials identifying the gunman as devin patrick kelley. i believe it's devin patrick kelley. aged 26. of neighboring coe mall county. he was known to the community, but we don't know if there was a direct connection to the
2:59 pm
community. if he has attended this church. if he hadn't attended this church, if he knew someone that went to this church. if he had -- had lived in the community at one point. none of that we know. and then of course pete telling us there was no obvious connection to terrorism as well. so we know that as well. still not a lot, clint. still not a lot, but we are getting closer. and authorities now searching the home of this individual. a lot of risk there for authorities in this search as pete brought up to make sure this home isn't booby-trapped. as we have seen in the past with some crimes like this where investigators have gone to the apartment of a shooter to then find explosives or that sort of thing. so clint, we've got about 60 seconds before this press conference starts so give me what you know so far, your hunch. >> let me use -- i'll use the name of the shooter one time and then i won't use it again. david patrick kelley, aged 26,
3:00 pm
the fbi and law enforcement right now will be trying to determine does he have a military background, shooting background. as you and i have discussed earlier this hour he is known to members of that church. he's known to the community. the question is what drew him there? i would say, you know, if the authorities don't already know the connection, they'll find out very quickly. and of course the sad thing is all of these people who have died at the hands of this individual for some unknown reason that we'll know very soon to include the teenage daughter of the pastor there. but this individual is in and about the local community. he's known by people. he has -- you know, i'm sure he's got a firearms background. we'll find out if he has an arrest history or not, but there's some issue, some type of anger, frustration that allowed him to accumulate the belief he
