yasmin vossoughian. we begin with the election night results across the country. a big night for the democratic party, not so much for the gop. ralph northam rode through a victory. and firing up the trump aides with ads against gangs and confederate mon youments. the democrat will succeed in a race rising five points in the last gubernatorial election. democrats won the other top offices that virginia, including justin fairfax elected lieutenant governor. and mark herring fending off the challengers winning by six points. margins notably smaller than northam's nine-point win. >> and president trumpwayed in to slam ed gillespie. writing, ed gillespie worked

hard but did not embrace me or what i stand for. don't forget republicans won 4 out of 5 races. hours earlier the president send earlier tweets of support. abc news reports two sources close to steve bannon rallying including bannon camp fuming tonight. 57% disapproving of the way president trump is handling his job, 40% approving. and problems for republicans in the state of new jersey where phil murphy a retired wall street executive. in a pickup for democrats murphy defeated chris christie's lieutenant governor kim guada o

guadagno. 77% disapproved of the job christie was doing. and as for trump, 63 pus approve of the handling of the presidency, 33% approve. and the state democrats drew their already big race. and joining us from washington, nbc vonn hilliard. you were in virginia last night. democrats, they didn't just take the governor's mansion, they also knocked some big wins in the state house. how does this advance their agenda both in the state and from there nationally. >> good morning, ayman. ralph northam, we were saying all the way out, a less an exciting democrat to put forward. he's a pretty mild-mannered individual. he's a pediatric neurosurgeon. he did last night is bring out

droves of democratic minority voters but he also brought out white voters in areas, north virginia area, particularly wrr where he was able to bring wider margins than hillary clinton last year. loudon county where hillary clinton won by 15%. he opened up that margin to 23%. and he actually tied in that race with an even number of voters. what does that mean? for democrats this is a lot of hope looking beyond. online as you mentioned, it went to the house of delegates where democrats were down by 2 to 1 margin this year. and what they did last night was open it up to where it's almost even. there are still some races too close to call. >> we're a year out from midterms here, democrats looking ahead saying this could really be a thumbs up for us with the midterm elections but they've got a year to get there. what can be the take away, do

you think, for them. >> i think for democrats, it's the fact that the resistance could actually be potentially strong. if they bring out somebody who comes and focuses on issues like health care, like education that they're able to actually save a chance. he's from the rural part of the state. i think the question is on the republican side, ed gillespie trying to straddle the line between embracing donald trump's style of politics and some issues and tinged ads linking his opponent to ms13, the latino gang. as well as the statutes. >> and drawing the line there. >> yes. let me ask you about quickly republican congressmen who announced they are not going to seek their re-election next year. this is a growing trend, do you think? and who does it present more of an opportunity does it excite democrats that these are seats they can go after?

or does it excite the nonrepublicans like steve bannon and his that say we can support more seats in the house? >> steve bannon is looking for more idealogues. the republicans with a hold on the house of representatives, along with 23 seats, along with nearly two dozen that are retired, there's 23 seats held by republicans that hillary clinton won. when you look at that house of delegate seats in virginia, particularly there were many surprising upsets, the question is could that happen on a national level until a lot of these congressional districts were republicans hold the power now and may have been in office for several terms but places like hillary clinton if democrats put potentially a more viable candidate like a ralph

northam in those districts could they pull it off. other election news, new york city mayor debla blasi won last night. de blasio becomes the first to win re-election since ed koch captured his win. de blasio spoke to supporters and spoke to president trump. >> question meour message is yoe on new york values and win, mr. president. if you turn against the values of your hometown, your hometown will fight back. >> after last night's victories, democrats may have reason to believe in polling again. and a new one offers a ray of hope. in a poll connected by cnn, 51% say it's bad for the country that republicans currently

control congress. 38% say it's good. when asked which party they would choose, democrats are preferred 50% to 38% over republicans. and 6 in 10 say they're more likely to vote for a candidate who opposes trump up four points from april. 35% are more likely to back a candidate who supports the president. president trump in asia last night on the asia trip. trump issued stern warnings to north korea and its leader kim jong-un. >> the regime has interpreted america's past restraint as weakness. this would be a fatal miscalculation. today, i hope i speak not only for our countries, but for all civilized nations, when i say to the north, do not underestimate

welcome back, everybody. we're following new developments in the harvey weinstein scandal. there are new reports that the disgraced movie mogul allegedly used what's being described as, quote, an army of spies to track his accusers and also journalists looking into allegations concerning him for years. nbc news senior national correspondent kate snow has more on this. >> reporter: it sounds more from a scene from a hollywood thriller that harvey weinstein could have produced. the new yorker publishing a bombshell about weinstein hiring private investors as spies. >> harvey weinstein hired essentially an army of private investigators. and these were not gum shoes in rundown apartments. these were elite international spying organizations. >> reporter: ronan farrow writes a former israeli defense officer posed as an operative.

and convinced mcgowan to meet with her. i took her to the board walk mcgowan tells her. and recording tens of hours of conversation. other investigators for wine stooe-o weinstein looked for dirt on the reporters. >> the allegation was to make sure they stayed silent and that reporters didn't come out with the truth. >> reporter: last year, weinstein reached out to the former prime minister who confirm ee eed he recommended t firms pr firms. i get having done this, it was a mistake to contract with and pay on behalf of a client investigators who we did not select and did thought control. weinstein's spokesperson told nbc it is a fiction to suggest that any individuals were targeted or suppressed anytime.

de blasio becoming the first democratic may tore win the election since ed koch captured his win. and phil murphy was elected governor. murphy defeated chris christie's lieutenant governor kim ga guadagno. and ralph northam rode to a victory over ed gillespie. the lieutenant governor defeated the rnc chair who intended to fire up president trump's base with immigrant gangs and confederate monuments. virginia democrats clobbered in the elections last night in a wave that erased a 32-seat majority in the house of delegates. control of that chamber will likely be decided by recounts.

33-year-old journalist danica roem asked marshall, a staunch conservative making room. and chris hurst whose fiancee and television reporter alison park you might recall was tragically killed in a live broadcast in 2015 he won over an incumbent lawmaker. an exit poll shows the issues were health care, 39%. and gun policy at 17%. taxes came in third with 15%. immigration at 12%. and one member of virginia's congressional delegation placed the blame squarely on the white house. and telling "the new york times," i do believe that this is a referendum on this administration. democrats turned out tonight but i'm pretty sure there were some republicans who spoke loudly and

clearly tonight as well. >> and the mayor of provo, utah, is headed to congress this morning. republican john curtis won tuesday's special election to replace jason chaffetz' house seat. curtis breezed to victory in the third district. a former democrat, curtis said in his victory speech, quote, we need bridge-builders, not bomb-throwers after saying he did not vote for trump in the 2016 election citing moral concerns but says he does support the president's agenda including building a border wall with mexico and, quote, to drain the swamp. and vaughn hilliard is back with us. knew you were in virginia talking to voters ahead of yesterday's election results. what were some of the key issues that you got from them? and does it match what we were just talking about, the big issue is surprisingly gun policy, even ahead of taxes in that state? >> exactly, the forefront of

what you're looking at there, 39% said health care was the top issue for them. you're looking at ralph northam, sort of that mild-mannered democrat that pulled in droves of democrats, as well as republicans in order to win that. saying that health care is the major primary issue. you look at medicaid, virginia, in the past year since the health care act was passed has held back. what you saw was ralph northam pushing back and saying this is something that we need to do. one of the interesting things that we saw from our exit polling on the issues when it came to confederate statues, actually 60% of voters felt they should stand. what we're looking at is a larger picture when it comes to the skepticism of president trump. >> let's talk about sort of president trump's influence here for virginia voters. did he have any? >> well, if you look at our exitle positiving there,

one-third of the voters overall said that he was a major factor in their opposition to voting for ed gel liillespie, the republican. ed gillespie kind of straddled that line with racially tinged ads with charlottesville. but when it cams to ms13 linking latinos with these communities. but ed gillespie the former rnc chair, counselor to george w. bush, he came kind of up with that bargain, can you run a trump-style campaign but never ever campaign with trump? the answer we saw last night was no. after the tweet, trump tweeted out gillespie should have embraced him. >> you kind of get the idea that trump threw him under the bus with that tweet. let's switch gears and talk about tax reform. the senate republicans set to release their tax reform proposal. what are you hearing about how

it's actually going to differ from the tax plan the gop house has put out? >> they've only got about 45 more days at this point, to pass tax reform by year's end which republicans and the administration and the congress have promised to do. when you're looking at that senate bill, the first -- the first details beginning we're beginning to get, one of the -- the crux of this tax proposal, it comes down to the corporate tax cut which the administration has said they'd like to move from 35% to 25%. the republicans and senator are talking about putting a delay on that very detail. $1.5 trillion over the next ten years is what republicans have put aside in order to at to the deficit. the question is are they able to vote on legislation that does that, especially when there's concern over whether this proposal they're putting forward may add more than that $1.5 trillion. >> nbc's vaughn hilliard live in washington, d.c., thanks.

correspondent for nbc, chris jansing. let's talk about how president strumptrump was greeted in china. >> well, ayman, i guess you could say they're rolling out the red carpet the chinese are calling this a state visit plus. officially, it's reciprocity, kind of a thank you to president trump for the hospitality he showed to xi jinping when he came to florida and was hosted at mar-a-lago. unofficially, they're stroking the ego of this president from whom they want so much. and clearly, president xi seeing himself at least on equal footing having come off his party's congress with at least five more years in power here. but the big message for north korea, and the president calling north korea to come to the table, saying it would be in their best interest to do so. but also sending a message about the american military and what he calls its unparalleled strength. take a listen to his message to the north korean leader.

if he does do that. chris jansing live in beijing. thank you. this morning, the families of 26 families killed in the deadly mass shooting in sutherland springs, texas, are arranging funerals. according to an el. paso police department report officers took kelley in june of 2012 at a bus station after he escaped from a mental health facility. he had been sent to the facility after being accused of assaulting his wife and fracturing his baby stepson's skull. kelley pleaded guilty in the court but the conviction never made it into the fbi's national data baibase database. had the conviction been reported it would have barred kelley from buying firearms. kelley's public school records were released yesterday and they said he be suspended seven times and a classmate said he had complained about medication he

was taking. >> so many red flags. an increased focus on the military and its records of service members convicted. in the wake of the shooting, the air force has failed to meet the background check system. the inspector general will now review policies and procedures to make sure that records from other cases have been reported correctly. but according to reports, the defense department has reported just a single record of misdemeanor conviction for domestic violence by a service military member, suggesting a serious lapse by the military in the sharing of domestic violence records that would disqualify a person from legally owning a gun. now, questions have also been raised over the military's method of compiling the records for sharing. jeff flake of arizona has introduced bipartisan legislation to make it harder for people who have been convicted of domestic violence to actually get guns.

the bill aims to clarify ambiguity related to the 1996 change to the gun role act of 1968 that requires the military to report domestic violence misdemeanors to the national database for background checks. that's something that the senator says may have helped to prevent this tragedy. >> there are a lot of red flags there. >> so many layers, not just the military but subsequently down the road. a frightening experience for people on a jetliner as it burst into flames and it's all captured on camera. we'll have that dramatic video, plus, bill karins is back with us. he's going to have all of the details on the dramatic drop in temperatures in the country and plus what could bring record lows.
