2:00 pm
>> glad you did the segment. a democrat, republican, support or oppose, the wars in iraq and afghanistan, giving everything to our country. we owe them a lot better than we're giving them. >> innocent victims of a really broken politics. they deserve better than what our politics is delivering. >> and we should see them as heroes for all of us, and i think that is right. you can't be bipartisan. veterans, all of us should thank them for serving. >> amen. thank you to you all. that's for our hour. nicolle wallace. "mtp daily" starts now. hi, chuck. >> you know what your husband and i have in common? >> hurricane fans. >> right. doing the same thing tomorrow night at 8:00. go canes! >> you, too. >> if it's friday, roy moore speaks out. tonight, how the accusations against alabama republican
2:01 pm
senate candidate roy moore are driving the gop deeper into its existential crisis. >> put on the light and let the truth come out to where it is. plus, how the 2017 election shattered barriers for diverse candidates across the country. we'll talk to virginia's first transgender elected official. finally, the intersection of politics and sports. over 70 years of "meet the press." >> what would happen in the nba without michael jordan? >> it could give the rest of us a chance to win. >> this is "mtp daily," and it starts right now. good evening. i'm chuck todd here in win washington and welcome to "mtp daily." since when were morality become an issue of political convenience? sexual misconduct involving minors is an issue that shouldn't have a side depending on who you're rooting for to win a special election to the u.s.
2:02 pm
senate. right now there are republican leaders in alabama and a few around the country that are still rallying behind senate candidate roy moore despite these allegations reported by the "washington post" for multiple women that he initiated sexual contact or made romantic overtures when they were teenagers. one as young as 14, and he was in his 30s. yesterday moore denied the allegations calling them, "completely false and a desperate political attack." but moments ago he appeared on sean hannity's radio show. insisted he's never engaged in sexual misconduct. alleged collusion involving his accusers and claimed he's never had any contact with leigh corfman. the accuser who says he was 14 when he initiated sexual contact with her. take a listen. >> i don't know ms. corfman from -- anybody. never had contact with her. these accusations are completely
2:03 pm
false, i believe politically motivated brought to stop a successful campaign and that's what they're doing. >> a little more from that interview just a few moments ago where he defines where he thinks there is a line that should be drawn. >> nobody that's abusers of 14-year-olds, age 32 or age 17 it doesn't matter. if you abuse a 14-year-old, you shouldn't be a senate candidate. i agree with that, but i did not do that. >> nbc news has not independently confirmed the allegations but here's the thing. some back moore even if the worst were true. seems in their view this isn't as bad as letting a democrat win a special election to the u.s. senate. here's covington county republican chairman william blocker who says even if there was hard evidence to confirm the allegations, "there's no option to support doug jones." big county republican chairman jerry powell who says, even if
2:04 pm
there was proof, "i would vote for judge moore, because i wouldn't want to vote for doug." or the geneva county republican chairman who says, other than being with an underage person he didn't really force himself. if he withdraws, that would concede it to the democrat. or alabama state auditor jim zeigler saying yesterday mary was a teenager and joseph an adult carpenter and they became parents of jesus. there is nothing to see here. today ziegler to nbc news that was taken out of context. my point was given the allegations that roy moore denies they're trying to paint this dirty old man syndrome which doesn't exist and went on to say, "a long instance of older men and teenage girls, example, lauren bacall and humphrey bogart. they finally got married when she was 20. if they believe the man is
2:05 pm
predatory they are guilty of allowing limb to exist for 40 years. prosecute them. you can't be a victim 40 years later, in my opinion. a source close to steve bannon tells nbc news he will maintain support for now as well. the president, the vice president and a lot of senate republicans all say moore should quit the race if the allegations are true, but some would ask and we ask what additional proof do they need? on that point, alabama's republican governor kay ivey today. >> reporter: did you find the women's words to be trustworthy, what they told the paper? >> why wouldn't it be? i mean, i don't know. anything can happen. we just got to get more facts. >> folks, this isn't a phenomenon isolated on the right. democrats don't have clean hands either, look how they treated kennedy the affairs or monica lewinsky and it's much bigger
2:06 pm
than politics. when did people get so brazen admitting there is no true north on their more's compass and when did it start pointing in the most convenient direction? joining me, covering roy moore's race all along. welcome back to the show. >> thanks for having me. >> how much is the alabama republican party unified 5ir7ar roy moore right now? >> most of the folks came from moore's strongholds in rural areas, and in the, in the wire grasp. what the appear thinks is a great question. the alabama republican party has pretty much gone radio silent over these allegations. we've also reached out to legislative leaders to see what they think, and some endorsed moore. they have also not responded to our questions. so you're starting to see individual republicans backing
2:07 pm
moore, but nothing official yet from the party itself. >> is there any serious effort to replace him? is there any serious effort at galvanizing a write-in campaign? >> there has been a write-in candidate who stepped forward, a businessman naked ma-- named ma watson. it's very hard to get him off the ballot. according to state law, would be on the ballot even if he formally wanted to withdraw and he's given no indication he's going to do so. at this point, moore is still the kwnd for the republican party. >> could the party withdraw him without his permission? >> great question, and it's -- it's -- i don't know exactly the answer. i can say that the alabama republican party does have a faction that is very loyal to roy moore. if the party did make an effort to do that, i expect you would see a lot of pushback from that faction. >> you know when it comes to allegations like this, they usually don't come in a vacuum.
2:08 pm
meaning when it comes out, there's usually this, oh. boy, there had been whispers about x, or whispers about y throughout this entire culture phenomenon that's shaking the country right now. all of these stories have had that. has there ever been a whiff of this before? >> personally, i have not heard of anything about these allegations before i saw the "washington post" story. other reporters in alabama had said they have heard rumors about it, but i -- i personally never heard anything until this "washington post" story came out. >> all right. i've seen one overnight poll, insta-poll and am hesitant to put it up. i think a one-night poll is dangerous in general. will make people think the race means, is suddenly moved in one direction. but what is your sense that -- do the republicans think this is shifted the race where he could
2:09 pm
actually now lose it? >> this is the, been the issue with the race, even before these allegations. moore was running a very lethargic campaign. he was not doing very many public events. he's given the airwaves to doug jones over the past six weeks and given the democrats an opportunity to define himself without any real pushback. now that these allegations are here the question becomes, when will we see roy moore again at a public event campaigning? doing the kind of what you would expect from these campaigns. you have to say soup the structurassume the structural issues favor moore. this simply complicates things for the republicans. >> is there a specific area that they, where this suddenly will become the, the swing part of this race? is it huntsville? >> we want to watch the suburbs. you want to watch the suburbs of huntsville, shelby county, suburban birmingham. see what it does with suburban
2:10 pm
women, who traditionally are moore's weakest building block. >> all right. and the doug jones campaign, they've had airwaves to themselves. have you seen roy moore advertising yet? i know it was supposed to be coming soon. >> they had blocked some airtime. i have not seen any ads. there was a group that bought a, that did buy an anti-doug jones ad about a month ago, but otherwise, jones has had the rare luxury of being able to tell his own story without having to deal with any pushback on television. >> all right. interesting there. brian lyman, going to be quite the what do we have? about 32 days before election day? quite the wild ride. thanks for coming on and i'm sure we'll talk to you soon. joining me now, perry hooper jr. a former state representative and was the alabama co-chair for donald trump's presidential campaign and now a backer of roy moore for senate. during the runoff, i should say, you backed senator strange. is that correct you sir? >> i did.
2:11 pm
i sure did. >> yes. let me ask you this. i don't know if you've heard all of judge moore's interview with sean hannity or excerpts of it. are you satisfied with his denials? >> well, let me just tell you this. this just -- roy moore's been in the public eye and public office for the last 30-some odd years and now these ladies are just now coming forward with these type of accusations and allegations. i just think it's -- it's typical democrat gutter politics. i was -- i chaired, as you mentioned earlier, the donald trump for president campaign. and i see the same path that they tried to make those same allegations against donald trump, only to find they were all false. you know, they began trying to hit the race issue. and it didn't move the needle any. >> i understand, but -- >> then all of a sudden they -- >> but the question i asked you, are you satisfied with judge
2:12 pm
moore's denials? >> absolutely i amount. i think this is all gutter politics. he's an honest man. a man of integrity. and i think it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that what this is all about. we're right at a month going into probably one of the most important united states senate races in the country. that 51st senate vote extremely important to the president. he needs those votes. it's about issues. it's about repealing obamacare. it's about cutting taxes, and by golly, it's about building the wall. that's what this election is about and doug jones, he don't support any of that. >> let me ask you -- >> he's way back, behind by about 11 pin 1 points, 12 point high as 15 points in the polls. they decided to take this path. this gutter-style politics. >> let me ask you this. why would -- take the case of
2:13 pm
ms. corfman. why would she -- what would be her moat jasion you're claiming it's gutter politics. she put her whole life on the record with the "washington post." warts and all. whether it was bankruptcies, her own troubles in her past. is it not credible to you that one of the reasons she didn't feel she could speak out, because she just thought she wasn't in a position where people would believe her? >> well, first of all, the "washington post," my understanding, is that they went to her after some people told them to go talk to her. and that you may want to check the record, but that's what i understood. >> that's what the -- the "washington post" itself seemed to report they said, yes, as reporting on -- yes, you have that correct. as they were reporting on roy moore in general. go ahead, sir. >> let me say this -- nobody condones that stuff. you know? we've seen hollywood film producers involved with that. we've seen football players, baseball players. roy moore, that's not in his
2:14 pm
dna, man. he's a man of honesty and integrity and you know, we're -- to use a football phrase, we're in the red zone, man. we're in that political zone of politics. and they know it. both sides, republican party, democrat party, knows that this race is extremely important, and i, i made this, you may have heard it, i was the one that kind of broke the idea that if these ladies felt like that they're telling the truth and they need to go ahead and take a lie detectors test. a polygraph test. then we'll find out who's telling the truth and who's not. >> well, then, if you want them to do that, should judge moore take a lie detector test? >> that would be fine with me, but since they brought these allegations, you know, this is politics. we want to make sure if that's the case, let's see it. >> i guess i'm trying to
2:15 pm
understand why are you so confident that these accusers are telling a falsehood, and yet as you've seen, we're in a cultural moment. you see to believe all the allegations coming out of hollywood and the allegations coming out of elsewhere. why do you think -- why do you automatically assume these women are putting their name on the record, willing to have people attack them personally, why do you think they want to go out there and lie? >> i don't think anybody's attacking them personally. i certainly haven't, because i don't like to see any type of sexual assault. i think it's wrong, and people should pay the consequences. but as far as the hollywood film producers, you know, we're not talking about, you know, 10 or 15. i think they've -- one of those assistant directors was accused by 430 or something like that. of sexual harassment and sexual assault. if there's evidence there, i don't care who it is, they should be prosecuted. it's just, these ladies -- i
2:16 pm
mean, they've had 30, 35, 40 years to step forward. but it's just an odd situation that just happens to be one month going into an election when roy moore's up by 11 points. >> you sound like you're pragmatics about politics. if roy moore sun electable, do you think he should step aside? >> he should not step aside, but i'm like the president. i think some of these allegations are wrong, and, i mean, this could personally ruin somebody's life by some of these accusations. that's why we want the truth, to make sure the truth is known. but roy moore is a good man. if any of this stuff is factual, he would voluntarily step aside, i'm convinced of that. and the president said that and i've said that, but right now -- i'm supporting roy moore. i'm voting for roy moore and i think the great state of alabama's going to vote for roy moore. >> all right. perry hooper, former state
2:17 pm
director for donald trump's campaign in 2016. former state representative, thanks for coming on and sharing your views. appreciate it. >> thank you for inviting me. >> you got it. like we said, this problem is much, much bigger than roy moore in alabama. up next, a look at the wave of sexual misconduct hitting state houses across the country. aim and all that? is that whole thing still dragging on? no, i took some pics with the app and... filed a claim, but... you know how they send you money to cover repairs and... they took forever to pay you, right? no, i got paid right away, but... at the very end of it all, my agent... wouldn't even call you back, right? no, she called to see if i was happy. but if i wasn't happy with my claim experience for any reason, they'd give me my money back, no questions asked. can you believe that? no. the claim satisfaction guarantee, only from allstate. switching to allstate is worth it.

welcome back to "mtp daily." as we've said, we're in a much larger moment now in this country. women, some men, in almost industry and every corner of the country are speaking out about sexual harassment assault and misconduct. more and more men are being forced to acknowledge and sometimes apologize for improper behavior. as we've seen with roy moore, the problem goes far beyond the media and hollywood. rocking governments at the state and local level. the a.p. found california legislature paid at least

welcome back. let's bring in tonight's panel. hugh hewitt, host of msnbc "hugh hewitt" and msnbc contributor andrea mechl. and correspondent for msnbc and glenn thrush, nbc news political analyst and how many days are you soeber from twitter? >> going on two and a half months. >> carry twitter coins with us, those able to break the twitter -- the twitter habit. andrea mitchell, first, before we get into alabama specifically, this moment, we've had fits and starts of this moment before. >> yes. >> you've covered this in so many different iteration s anit hill, monica lewinsky. stoeps forward, arguably,
2:23 pm
lewinsky a step back. where are we culturally? >> first of all more women in the senate and house. not equal numbers but the sensitivities and a younger generation moving in and younger generation men are -- i think more acclimated to think of women as equal partners in this, partners in the workplace rather than as objects, sex wat objects. i'm generalizing but i think we see that. i had an interview this morning that just -- just broke my heart, frankly. the swimmer, she's 68 years old wrote an op-ed in the "new york times" and while doing interview and she told me how she was molested by her high school coach and only later confessed to her friend, a classmate in college, when they were 21 and the other woman said, he did it to me, too, and after she wrote this article in the "new york times," a 60-year-old woman
2:24 pm
wrote to her last night saying, i was 10 years old. i applied for the swim team because i looked up to you, and he did it to me when i was 10 years old. and i fell apart on the air, frankly. >> i like, perry hooper, the gentleman i just had, hugh hewitt, hear that story. asking, why didn't they come forward for 30 or -- >> i don't know where he's been. there's a sessions department of justice effort led by rachel brand, the associate attorney general, to educate, people who rent apartments it is illegal to harass, landlords cannot harass you, the staff can't harass you. it's a moment. i believe leigh corfman based on the reporting and lawyering background. i believe her and therefore i believe he ought to get out, and to that, man, i say, late hits are nothing new in politic. george bush hit in 2000 for the dui. it was true. first thing you ask, is the hit true and then you decide what to
2:25 pm
do. >> roy moore made a denial that may be able to get checked. right? the question, how would he deny and he denied ever meeting or knowing ms. corfman. that might be a verifiable fact. >> that is always a reporting nexus. by the way, i should say brian lyman way my former student at columbia. great to see -- >> very cool. >> full circle. >> holding down the fort down there. the thing that struck me was, you asked him about impugning the integrity of the people, of the woman who came forward and her mother. he called it gutter politics. she essentially accusing the people who came forward, the mother and the daughter, of gutter politics. and he's -- so he accuses them of that and then says that he is sure that, that moore's dna is absolutely fine. how do you sort of enter with any spirit of honesty and inquiry when you have that sort of predisposed bias? >> that's right.
2:26 pm
>> i think it's shocking. and when you look at even the way the white house responded, and sanders said, these are allegations that could ruin someone's life. when you read the "washington post" article, corfman, her life went off the rails. >> i was just going to say. somebody's life has already been impacted. >> and the fact they're saying this is about politics. a lot of the women who came forward, they had voted for trump. this isn't political. it's personal. it's politics? precisely why she didn't come forward, afraid of the pylon currently happening. >> and the tweet once amend future candidate for the u.s. senate. he said, innocent until proven guiltsy for criminal convictions not elections. i believe leigh corfman, moore is unfit for office and should step add side. back to the moral compass issue. you were struggled with donald trump. didn't like the "access hollywood" tape and ended up voting for him. this more's compass issue, how big of a problem is it inside
2:27 pm
the republican party? >> in a binary choice it's a different choice between dnts a donald trump and hillary clinton. right now, the national republican senatorial committee cut him off. if you conclude it's true, you cannot vote for him. first thing is -- >> certainly can't serve with him. >> i don't know what they'll do, if he wins. i can't imagine him winning. i hope he withdraws. >> you don't think in three weeks we'd have the same thing that happened after the "access hollywood" tape, suddenly a bunch of republicans think, need that 52nd senate seat? >> in fact, we our own in hill hometown interviewing people at the convenience store. i don't care if it's true. men and women, behind the counter, and customers saying even if it is true i'll vote for him. i'm not voting for a democrat. >> what does this do to us as a country? this is a position we're now in, morality only matters with your political opponents? >> first of all, you have to look at the state of alabama,
2:28 pm
which an extraordinarily polarized state. started my career there. it wasn't quite at binary but pretty much cats and dogs. there is a sense among alabama republicans, you got this when you went to trump rallies last year, they were in an existential fight against the democratic party. whoever they had at a candidate, you heard it in your guest, was morally and politically superior to any possible democrat nap is the mind-set i. didn't want to imply something not fully explained. we did go back and report that coach to the principal. he was fired from that school. was hired at another school. kept getting promoted, ended up coaching in the olympics and getting put in the hall of fame. >> unbelievable. i assume that hall of fame will -- >> i think the challenge is, how we keep moving the goal post because of politics. that's the wrong message sending to our children and wrong
2:29 pm
message saying why are you in leadership to begin with? talk about a cultural moment we're living when it comes to sexual harassment for women and in cases men, a bigger epidemic talking about the first time taking the knee. i think the country is going through a wave of awakening of injustice and not the first. we'll see more issues that are going to come up. >> before we go, louis c.k. put out a statement today that has been different in tone than from any other person accused of anything. >> uh-huh. >> because he didn't litigate. he said this -- the hardest regret to live with is what you've dub to hurt someone else and i can hardly wrap my head around the scope of hurt i brought on them. i'd be remiss to exclude the hurt of people i've worked with, plofl and personal lives impacted by this including production and noted power. took advantage of the fact i was
2:30 pm
high highly respected by them and people who looked up to me didn't want to hear it. i didn't think i was doing any of that because my position allowed me not to think about. it there's nothing about this i forgive myself for and i have to reconcile with who i am. which is nothing compared to the task i left with them. look, i don't think anybody thinks louis c.k. deserves lying eyes for putting out a statement. we don't fully know his motives, but this is the moat complete me mea culpa i've seen. >> you can't read his statement on the air the way he wrote it. it was too vulgar. >> fair enough. >> part of the problem. it's the culture at large. and the late chuck colson, friend of mine. you pump enough sewage into a body of water you will kill every fish in that body of water. his statement in itself is part of the sewage. >> is there -- what do we want to hear from these accused men, andrea?
2:31 pm
>> i am sick. i am a sociopath. i have to deal with it. if i've broken the law, let me -- let me deal with that. i have ruined peoples lives. >> i also think we have to have a conversation with the h.r. departments. all of these folks coming forward had spoke ton their human resources department and they looked the other way. what is the incentive to actually make change? >> it's the financial part of it. a lot of people, like, well, geez. that person either has an audience or something and we -- you know -- we're afraid to lose money. >> started with bill coscosby. >> yep. >> all right. we're going to pause here. you guys are sticking around. still ahead, what this week's election wins mean for more diverse political candidates, what they say about the direction of the country. we'll be right back.
