what has happened to them since. all is quiet in north korea, it's been nearly two months since the last missile test from kim jong-un. despite president trump's presence in the region. reaction next on msnbc live. >> we begin with trump's arrival to hanoi. much of the focus is on the earn counter with vladimir putin on the sidelines of the asia summit that just wrapped up. telling reporters he raised the issue of election metaling with putin and he's convinced putin did not metal. nbc is in hanoi vietnam with us. goorngs good morning. what are you learning about this discussion between president

trump and putin. is it being viewed as a formal meeting. >> good morning. good to see you. no, not a formal meeting. in fact that had been the subject of quite a bit of back and forth including between the state department and the white house press secretary. having said that, the president wondered back in the press blame on air force one to press area. talked to the press on the record for about 25 minutes and made a lot of news. let's start with the big question everybody had. if he had a chance to talk with putin, even informally, as apparently he did. would he raise the issue of metaling in the u.s. election. he said he did. that putin said he didn't metal. and i'm going to quote here. we just got the notes from the press pool. he absolutely did not metal in our election he said. he did not do what we're saying he did. then the obvious question that was asked, do you believe him. look. i can't stand there and argue with him. i'd rather had have him get out of syria to be honest with you.

i'd rather have him work on ukraine. then he adds, because the whole thing was set up by the democrats, i mean they ought to look at podesta. they ought to look at the things they've done with that phony dossier. putin said he did not do what we say he did. there are those at the white house who say if he did do it, he wouldn't have gotten caught. that's a very interesting statement said president trump. how did the election metaling come up? did you ask him? was the question from the press pool. every time he sees me, he says i didn't do it and i believe. ereally believe when he tells me he didn't do it. he says he didn't do that. i think he's very insulted by it. so the president clearly bringing it up with president putin. not surprising. as he's done in the past. rejecting any idea that he metalled in the u.s. election. also heard the president say he thought it was more important to

talk about syria and a joint statement was issued confirmed by the president from the kremlin. let me tell you what that is about, basically addressing the violence in syria. u.s. and russia will continue determination to combat the islamic state. maintain open military channels of communication and they say they agree there is no military solution. the president said that was something they got done very quickly. there have been reports actually that rex tillerson had met with his counter part. and that's where the wording on the statement got put together. we have not seen the white house put out that communication yet. of course, there had be this long back and forth. would they or wouldn't they meet. we heard the president before he even came to asia indicating he thought he would meet with trump. then we heard from the white house they couldn't fit it into the schedule. then we heard from rex tillerson say we'll they'll only meet if they have issues of substance. he mentioned syria specifically. clearly they had enough of a conversation to raise syria.

to raise ukraine, and, of course, as we just said. to raise russian metaling. >> many new details. thanks so much for that report. amid an avalanche of sexual allegations of the careers of so many notable men across the cro country. bombshell report alleges sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old girl in 1979 that he pursued three other teenagers in his 30s. >> allegation of sexual misconduct are completely false. i believe they're politically motivated. i believe they're brought only to stop a very successful campaign, and that's what they're doing. >> one of the accusers claims

that moore dated her and provided her with who will when she was 18. >> we're also doing an investigation and have some evidence of collusion here. we're not ready to put that to the public just yet. >> just weeks before a critical special election that could impact the senate majority, mounting backlash among republicans. john mccain and mitt romney calling moore unfit for office. >> the president believes if the allegations are true, judge moore will do the right thing and step aside. >> chief justice refused to take down ten commandments monument. still has support. >> you're innocent until proven guilty. wire n we're fonot going to go back to the salem witch trials i hope. >> i just don't think he did what he's been accused of. >> so you plan to vote for roy

republicans are facing right now which is they need this senate seat to get their tax reform bill done. they need it for other priors. there's a narrow margin in the senate. if roy moore were to lose next month, doug jones being the democratic in that race. makes it a lot harder to get president trump in the republican agenda through. on the other hand, if they seat roy moore and still the allegations hangen over his head that he had inappropriate sexual contact with a 14-year-old, that could have a broader reverberation against the republicans. what i'm hearing from the republicans i talked to in washington, it's just not worth having the seat to have him in the caucus. >> are any republicans telling you the opposite. losing the senate seat outweighs the allegations. >> get my face off of the fundraising for this guy 67. i mean, look. you've had denouncement coming from every level of the republican party.

this is you had senator ted cruz, mitt romney. you name it. this is definitely the difference between this anded to aiken is that this is an actual allegation. it's crazy that in 2017 we're having to compare this back to todd aiken. this is -- these allegations speak for themselves. >> many senators speaking out about this. how much leverage do republicans leaders have over roy moore at this point. >> very little. that's the problem. they can't really force him off the ballot. in fact, even if he chooses to not run, his name will continue to be on the ballot. they don't have a choice, but to get somebody to run a write in. a lot of voters in alabama say they plan on voting for roy moore anyway. >> we'll see where that election, which is scheduled for december 12. i want to play for you another clip from sean hannity last night. take a listen.

>> it never happened, and i don't like hearing it. they're doing it a month way. 40 years in public service. they bring it up because it's political. a direct attack on this campaign. involves a 14-year-old girl which i would never have had any contact with. it's obvious to the causal serv that something is up. we're also doing an investigation and have some evidence ofome collusion here, but we're not ready to put that to the public just yet. >> you add those comments to those of his defenders like steve bannon saying it's politically motivated as well as comparing whatever actions he may have committed to the bible and romances between older men and younger women. is this reaction more establishment versus trump. >> it's so tough to put this in a political lens when the allegation is so serious and these crimes are so serious.

and look, roy moore is saying this isn't true. these are allegations that speak for themselves. the bottom line is that to bring it back to the todd aiken kp comparison. every republican now five weeks out from special election with other things they're trying to get done like tax reform are having to answer for that. very reminiscent. saw the effect todd aiken had on other races. heading to 2008, midterms, i mean, this is bad to say the least. >> jonathan, let's talk about that affect. this was a competitive race to begin with. how hard should democrats campaign on this or might this backfire. >> well, not really in a place to give advice to the democrats. i think they've found themselves in a -- i think they've found themselves in a position they did not expect. they had a candidate on the

breaking news. latest word on president trump and vladimir putin speaking on the sideline. they talked briefly about russia's metaling in the 2016 election. president trump told reporters off camera is that putin twice denied any interference in the election. mr. trump said you can only ask so many times and putin said he absolutely did not metal. and president trump said i think he is very insulted by it. the questioning which is not a good thing for our country. >> investigators are examining whether former national security adviser michael flynn discussed a plot to take a man out of u.s. by force and deliver him to arch rival overseas in exchange for multimillion dollar bribe. kristen welker has the details.

>> reporter: four people familiar with the investigation tell nbc news that special counsel robert mueller is looking into whether ousted national security adviser michael flynn agreed to rough offer of $15 million for a quid pro quo with the government of turkey just weeks before donald trump's inauguration. under a microscope, an alleged meeting at this upscale new york restaurant blocks from transition office where flynn then advising the transition and turkish officialed allegedly discussed removing chief rival of turkey from the u.s. and sending him pack to turkey. lives in pennsylvania. for the attempted turkish coup in 2016. aimed at ousting erdogan. erdogan has repeatedly asked the u.s. to extradite him. the obama administration resi

outrageous. >> in a word, they're looking at communications between the parties. on the one hand, you already have flynn suspected, i should say, of lobbying violations, but this really steps it up to the next level. if in fact he was working with them to try and forcibly, i guess, extradite the grade scho scho school. perhaps they were asking for flynn's help. the executive and judicial branch their the extradition process at least in the treaty between turkey and the united states. the executive can exert considerable power in the process. however, ultimately, if they can prove to a court that he is a political defendant, then he can

avoid the extradition process. it may be turkey was looking for influence if not physical removal with the new administration. >> danny, one of the first acts of the trump administration was asking the fbi to review turkey's request. would the president have been briefed on this type of request to the fbi. >> it's likely because under the treaty between turkey and the united states, the executive retains considerable power to either oppose or initiate an extradition. so it's likely that the president was certainly authorized to be briefed. from there there is a judicial process involved. ultimately, any person sought to be extradited has the right to hearing in federal court. and the federal court really has the last say. on the other hand, if the executive wanted to oppose the extradition, he has more power

to keep that person in the united states. >> is there anything that flynn can do to keep his son out of legal jeopardy here. >> i have defended criminal cases. this is a classic move and a very effective move by the dodge if dodge doj if this is what they're doing. it is effective in getting the testimony. if the classic cross-examination goes, you love your son. yes, i do. you would do anything for him. yes, i would. would you die for him. absolutely. would you lie for him. you get all kind of answers to this question. if the doj can exert pressure on someone's family member. put yourself, anyone. put yourself in that position.

if somebody was threatening your child with decades in prison, what would you do for him. that has been a move been the doj that has secured many c convictions and cooperation over the years. >> this week someone offered to send five women to donald trump's hotel room during a trip to moscow for a miss universe pageant. why would congress have asked about this part? >> congress has considerable power to ask about anything that congress is interested in asking about. their power to investigate is at times much broader than that of the doj. at least this investigation which has at least started with a nuclear war wroe toe kuss and expanded from there. to any of the other russian

better trade deals, economic record one year after winning the election may be too early to grade. nbc takes a look. >> donald trump was elected president on a promise of economic growth. >> we have a great economic plan. >> a year on the president is still trying to deliver on that plan. including tax cuts before congress now. america's economy is humming with growth topping 3% in back to back quarters. >> i happen to one who thinks we can go much higher. annual growth is still below that. in line with the general trend going back to the 1990s. >> i think if we continue to create jobs at levels that i'm creating jobs, i think that's going to have a tremendous impact. >> one and a half million jobs have been added to the u.s. economy since the president took office. unemployment has fallen to just 4.1%. the lowest in 17 years.

still, wages have room to grow. they're only up 2.4% year on year. not much of an improvement. more dramatic is the 28% climb in the stock market in the year since the election. >> under this proplerk system our economy boomed. >> dominique: t. >> the fact is the president inherited an already booming economy. only benefit the top 10% of earners. now critics with warning the tax reform package will mostly benefit businesses and the wealthy. >> what the middle class really does need are jobs and wage growth and the whole trickle down sales job has been belied by every historical example of these cuts. >> the white house disputes that.

welcome back. nbc headquarters in new york. at the half hour. here's a look at what's happening. breaking news at this hour. president trump confirming that he directly asked vladimir putin whether putin or russia metalled in the 2016 election. conversation that took place on the sidelines of the summit in asia. all of this as president trump arrives in hanoi vietnam on the next step of asia trip focused on trade agreements and north

korea. nbc is in hanoi with the latest. what is the president saying about how the topic of election metaling came up? >> well, it was part of a conversation that according to sarah sanders lasted less than five minutes. there had been a lot of back and forth between the kremlin and white house about whether any formal meeting would take place. it didn't. in this less than five minutes of conversation, we got a lot out of it. including the question of election metaling where the president says that president putin repeatedly denied that he had anything to do with the metaling and he said every time i bring it up, he's very firm r about it. he denies it. you can only bring it up so many times, and, in fact, i believe him. the president went on to say is what you want to do is then be able to move on. he continues to deny. you want to talk about syria. you want to talk about ukraine. the whole thing talking about russian metaling was set up by the democrats. that's what he told reporters as

he had this 25 minute conversation with them on air force one. he wondered back. it was not on camera. it was on the record. of course saying that it was set up by the democrats, ignores the fact that all of the leading intelligence agencies from the cia to the fbi to nsa have said that the russians metalled in the election and then one yeear after the election couldn't resist going back to his opponent. he said he has a great relationship with russia and with putin. it's a great thing not a good thing and, quote, hillary has her stupid reset button. she doesn't have what it takes to have that kind of relationship. a little later on in a conversation with reporters, president said obama just didn't have the right kind of chemistry to do the kinds of things he wants to do with the relationship with vladimir putin and russia. anhillary, he sa, w way in over h head. >> what else came out of that discussion between president trump and putin?

>> reporter: again, i think it's worth noting this is less than five minutes. he said they had a brief apparent talk about syria. we have learned otherwise that secretary of state rex tillerson was talking with his russian counter part. put out a joint statement thathe u.s. and russia will continue to combat the islamic state in syria. they agree there's no military solution. a joint statement we have not yet gotten from the white house. we've seen a statement from the kremlin so far. he was also asked about roy moore of course the candidate accused with a teen anyoage girn he was in his 30s. something moor denied. moore said he wouldn't deny he dated teenagers when he was in his 30s. now the president said he hasn't

had a lot of time to focus on that. he will have more to say on it when he gets back to the states. he has the state dinner coming up tonight here in hanoi. he is here again for another day. on monday, he will head to the philippines to wrap up his 12-day asia trip. >> that's a lot for you to cover. live for us in asia. thank you, chris. bring back jonathan and kevin. jonathan, vladimir putin or rather president trump asking vladimir putin whether he metal instead this election. said he asked him a few times. are you surprised that the president even asked. is it not surprising that putin would deny it. >> there's certainly a contradiction here between the president saying this is something that only democrats are concerned about and then saying he brought it up with vladimir putin. so if he brought it up with putin, there was a reason for that. i'm not terribly surprised he says he believes what putin said only because to call the russia president a liar to the american press probably wouldn't be helpful for that relationship

with russia that he's boasting about. not clear at the moment whether russia is getting the better end of the relationship or united states is. it's odd as chris just pointed out that the kremlin was the one to release a joint statement from the united states and russia. >> on syria, yes. kevin, i want to ask you. president trump says he believes putin's denials with respect to the election metaling question. jonathan answered this, but what's your reaction to that. >> the bigger take away is not so much about the five minute bump in the hallway conversation that putin and president trump had. it's this continuation of how trump is trying to have it both ways, it would seem. his position on the undespited metaling into the 2016 presidential election. not just on political institutions which by the way impacted not just republicans, but also democratic political

institutions. business institution in san francisco and silicone valley. talk to folks on the hill. we've had the top folks from the intelligence community testify on this issue. you talk to people when i interviewed senator susan collins a republican from maine. the big take away is what is the united states doing to in order to prevent it from happening again in 2018 and 2020. the comment from president trump and administration would raise questions about that. i don't think lawmakers have properly addressed that. they need to. it's not just political institutions that were hacked. the point here to add to what kevin was saying is basically everyone in the united states regardless of their sector who had any familiarity with this

believes that the russians metal instead our election and president trump is essentially saying he doesn't believe that. >> it's another denial. i do want to turn to russian investigate. you reported president trump's body guard turned down an offer from a russian to send five women to his hotel room. do your sources shed light how meaningful the testimony is. >> i think there's different interpretations of that. >> i think those who are inclined to believe the steel dossier has the allegations against donald trump, those who are inclined to believe it's right say look we've gotten closer. got somebody in the trump inner circle acknowledging there was an offer of five women to be sent to the hotel room. those who believe the president didn't do anything wrong and

also believe that the steel dossier is phony or fake. they look at it and say, look, the person closest to the president that night says the offer was rejected, and, you know, so any of the details are untrue. a little bit for both sides in this. regular contact last spring with top campaign officials. including steven miller and campaign documents reviewed by the times. other reports says miller was recently reviewed by mueller's team. investigation gets closer to president trump's inner circle. isn't it becoming closer to down play the developments? >> also reporting about general flynn and son michael flynn junior regarding alleged $15 million business arrangement during the presidential transition period with turkish officials regarding to send a turkish official who was living

in the middle of nowhere pennsylvania back to turkey. so i think that it will broader take away from if you take a step back with all of this, this investigation is very much on going. there's a different angle that authorities are following. and the court dates are only going to continue for the folks that have already been indicted, including former trump campaign chairman manafort and george papadopoulos. to answer you question directly regarding george papadopoulos and communications with campaign. the way the campaign was set up, it would not be uncommon for steven miller, then the policy adviser, to be engaging with lower level staffers such as george papadopoulos. it's why again the probe is really gripping all of trump world right now. robert mueller is not leaving any stone unturned.

breaking news. latest word on president trump and russian president putin

speaking earlier today on the sidelines of that asian economic summit. they talked briefly about russia's meddling in the 2016 election. president trump told reporters off camera that putin twice denied any interference in the election. mr. trump said that you can only ask so many times and that putin said he absolutely did not meddle. president trump said, i think he's very insulted by it. the questioning, which the president says is not a good thing for our country. joining me now is steve clemens, washington editor at large for the atlantic magazine and an msnbc contributor. steve, i have to ask you this off the top, president trump asking putin about the election meddling and the president of russia denying it. might you expect that, and what's your reaction to all this? >> well, of course vladimir putin keeps denying this. i think the big news out of this transcript is that donald trump continues to say, i believe him. and saying systemically that he's not giving spoupport to th intelligence communities and

others that have pointed to russian meddling in the u.s. election. that's surprising. the other thing about this transcri transcript, a very fascinating transcript, he frames the relationships of the united states with asia, with justin trudeau of canada, with angela merkel of germany, entirely in personal terms with himself. saying, i have good relationships with these people. thus, there's really no discussion of u.s. national interests or u.s. national objectives in many -- it's a very, very interesting document because it shows us that donald trump in terms of talking with putin, it's all about the chemistry and juice between these two guys, almost in a way that disregards the substantive detail of that relationship. >> well, talk more about that because president trump also said that you can only ask so many times. is he right? does he indeed have bigger issues to deal with here? >> well, it's not going to be

resolved between them. the fact of the matter is, russia meddled in the u.s. election. the department of homeland security told 21 states in the united states that russia meddled in their election. our entire system is based on the presumption right now of trying to not only look at what russia did in our election but trying to remedy it so it doesn't happen again, while the president of the united states is somewhat standing in disbelief of that. so it's not going to be resolved between vladimir putin somehow acknowledging, yes, i did this and so sorry, donald. that's just not a mature way for superpowers to be dealing with one another. so we're watching in realtime the president of the united states talk about an important core issue for the united states in such a way that in a way trivializes it. i find it, frankly, bizarre. we keep asking donald trump whether he's addressed these issues with vladimir putin because we're hoping that it's more about donald trump. we're hoping donald trump

finally recognizes and has the confidence of the u.s. intelligence and national security establishment that he's with them and not necessarily a booster for russia. >> and steve, i want to move on to tuesday when the senate foreign relations committee will hold a hearing to examine the president's authority to use nuclear weapons. this effort is led by senator bob corker, a fierce critic of mr. trump. how far do you think senators will go on this? >> well, i think they're discussing it, but frankly, at the end of the day, there is no backstop to the president of the united states holding those nuclear codes and having the ability with the advice and counsel of his advisers, military advisers and whatnot, to call the use of nuclear weapons in dire times. so while they're having that hearing and they may put pressure on the issue and kind of raise the issue, i don't see any technical way for that senate hearing to have much of an impact on donald trump's ability to launch a nuclear weapon.
