get started for free at ancestry.com. it's a saturday here on msnbc. i'm richard lui at world headquarters in new york city. it's 3:00 p.m. in new york city and 2:00 p.m. in alabama where senate roy moore is campaigning on 48 hours after "the washington post" reported that he had forced a 14 year old girl into ha sexual encounter when he was 42. moore firing back. take a listen. >> i've been investigated more than any other person in this country. to think that grown women would wait 40 years to come before, right before an election, to bring charges is absolutely unbelievable. this article is a prime example of fake news. and attempt to divert attention
12:01 pm
from the true issues that effect our country. >> msnbc vaughn is live in alabama, suburb of birmingham. i do want to get a steense of where voters are going now based on this bombshell report? >> reporter: based off the video we are outside much birmingham. this was a veterans day event. standing ovation when he entered and when he left. spent about five minutes of the 15 minutes of his remarks addressing these allegations. and really left still many questions up in the air. he told the crowd he said that the allegations that were made in that "washington post" by the four women are completely untrue and false. but what he did not do was answer the questions about whether he has ever in his life engaged with sexually with girls under the age of 18, whether he's kissed girls under the age
12:02 pm
of 18, in that radio interview with shawn hannity asked him twice said did you engage with girls under the age of 18 when you were in your 30s he said there was not his general behavior usually. and which just opened up the questions even more. we tried to ask him those questions. i think you are looking at the video when he was entering the event and then also when he exited. but to the reporters questions he did not answer. richard? >> all right. live for us there in birmingham, alabama. thank you, sir. let's now bring in daily beast politics, podcast the gist, mike pest ka, as well. betsy, where do you want to start? what does this mean for republicans? what does it mean for democrats in alabama? and for that matter across the country looking forward to 2018? >> this is going to exacerbate the rifts that already exist within the republican party
12:03 pm
overseas the president has been traveling to top reporters and gave a rote answer that he wasn't familiar with the allegations and hadn't had time to look at them. that's different from what we are hearing from prominent republicans on the hill. lee, a conservative republican as well as steve daines newly elected senator from montana have rescinded their endorsements of roy moore indicating this is not an ideological question, this is a question about decorum. remember, donald trump rose to power because he said political correctness was a bad thing. when they talk about political correctness that needs to be broad word for behavior. we are seeing those norms largely abandoned. and in this case roy moore is going to be part of that. so what we can expect incoming days, i loont like saying this, but one thing we can expect is
12:04 pm
see some of donald trump and roy moore allies in conserve testify media push certain narratives designed to discredit the women who have brought forward these allegations related to roy moore. that's something that's going to pour gasoline on the fire that's already separating many republicans on capitol hill and establishment republicans from their base. and we can expect this narrative to keep getting uglier. >> mike, should republicans, which bannon would say we don't need their support, that's not who we are going after anyway for this election, let those that support this new idea of what it means to be conservative, at least from bannon's perspective vote for moore. i don't care if they come out against roy moore because we don't want that kind of conservatism. does that work? >> that is telling for primary. and might work. even though alabama is much more conservative republican koran less educated then the country
12:05 pm
at large, at some point the roosters are going to come home, or the chickens will come home to roost. doug jones democratic candidate hasn't done much but just sit back. and i can think of so many lines of attack, where do you go jones can say you know what let's make this referendum ton the kind of christian you want in washington d.c. d.c. where he can mobilize different pastors and different current districts and district attorneys to say how can we bring a stat tour i rape in this case if you elect this guy senator. so, so far all we've had is one iran cl iron clad story in "the washington post" the fact that she got a ticket for boating without her lights on. this is just to show the story was very solid. i suppose steve bannon can try
12:06 pm
some sort of counter argument that maybe would rely on innuendo or character assassination. bull i don't think they'll find facts. even in alabama it will hurt him tremendously. >> should doug jones do what mike is suggesting here? >> i can't speak to particular pieces of advice for doug jones campaign. >> we won't hold you to it, betsy. >> that said, what we know for sure is that alabama is a deeply red state. and roy moore is not going to have trouble getting small donations from conservatives outside of alabama. my guess is despite these allegations. so even though this story has leveled an extraordinarily blow on roy moore, that doesn't mean that doug jones is necessarily going to have an easy or even winnable shot at flipping this seat. remember, this is the senate seat that jeff sessions held. this is really conservative state. very tough for democrats, no matter what stories emerge.
12:07 pm
so it's going to be challenging. >> challenging and all watching it. mike, some are saying if you are that republican that absolutely rejects this reporting, again, 30 different sources, that "the washington post" has for this story, if you are that kind of republican, then you should support the democrat, you should endorse doug jones? >> or try a write inc candidate. i think you raise jeff sessions, maybe that's the person, the kind of republican that offends the sensibilities of democratic america or republican outside of alabama america. but i think roy moore for all his bluster and persona, what this does. >> controversy. >> it goes right to even the kind of republican in alabama. not all of them, but just enough of them to imperil which should have been the safest seat in the united states seat for republicans. >> and now it isn't.
12:08 pm
thanks so much. i appreciate you both on a saturday. >> sure thing. >> still ahead, a shake and a chat. what president trump says about president putin in person about election interference. and as men of women are service are honored across the country today, we take a look at how they are facing those issues to help them. i love kiwis. i've always had that issue with the seeds getting under my denture. super poligrip free. it creates a seal of the dentures in my mouth.

president trump on the road in asia facing some questions today about his relationship with russian president vladimir putin. the questions come in one day after the two shook hands at a summit in vietnam. and then a meeting between the world leaders, we only heard about from the president himself. msnbc national correspondent chris jansing traveling with the
12:12 pm
president through asia there live for us in vietnam just after 3:00 p.m. on a sunday. and, chris, what's the readout? what was the tone? what did the president say they talked about? >> reporter: well, he said they talked mostly about syria. and in fact president secretary sarah huckabee sanders said it was less than a five minute conversation. but later on air force one the president talked to the press about 25 minutes and talked at length about the russian meddling in the 2016 election. he said it was a politically motivated hit job that vladimir putin had denied it multiple times. and questioned how many times can you ask him about it. he continues to deny it. blaming again on politician. on the democrats in particular. but also going after the heads of intelligence agencies. let me read to you part of what the president had to say. i mean, he said, give me a break. they are political hacks.
12:13 pm
so you look at it you have bannon, clapper and comey, comey has proven to be a liar and leaker. so you have that. then you have vladimir putin saying that he has nothing to do with that. the president says it's time to move on. he suggested it's getting in the way of diplomacy on important issues like north korea. and that if it's continued to be pursued by again what he believes is his political opponents, that it's going to cost lives because they won't be able to solve these difficult problems that are out there. he also said that, rather, the kremlin weighed in and said that they had basically the same readout as the president did, richard, but they added to that saying the president didn't just agree with vladimir putin, but he said that it was being exaggerated, russia's role in election hacking, and he said they are exaggerating it without
12:14 pm
any proof. of course, intelligence agencies have said repeatedly and they felt it was necessary to issue statements a mid the president's criticism. once again affirming that russia did indeed in all of the intelligence points to this, that russia did indeed interfere in the 2016 election. richard? >> chris jansing, live with the president on the final leg there in vietnam. thank you so much, chris. former fbi director james comey testified about russia meddling in the 2016 election this summer. you remember that. listen to what he told congress. >> there is no fuss on that. it is a high confidence judgment of the entire intelligence committee hand the members of this committee have seen the intelligence. it's not a close call. that happened. that's about as unfake as you can possibly get. and it's very very serious which is why it's so refreshing to see a bipartisan focus on that because this is about america, not about any particular party. >> fast forward to president
12:15 pm
trump trump to wausau, poland a month later where he asked trump whether he believes russia meddled in the u.s. election. >> reporter: you again say you think it was russia. they are more definitive saying it was russia. why won't you agree with them and say it was? >> i'll tell you what i agree it was russia but probably other people and or countries. and i see nothing wrong with that statement. nobody really knows. nobody really knows for sure. >> the president today said he takes putin at his word despite intelligence officials finding otherwise. joining me now is former white house aid and spokesman for bush. strategi strat. senior polity and editor at. thank you all three for being here. let's start with you on this, john, he says that he, and i'll
12:16 pm
again quote here, he says i really believe every time he sees vladimir putin when vladimir putin says he had nothing to do with it, and he says i really believe that those are his words. does he really believe that? >> who knows what he believes, richard. but i have to tell you that that quote he played earlier in a clip was outrageous. for him to impugn the three federal servants, and take up vladimir putin side on this is just, it's outrageous and unfortunately a hallmark of this strak administration but it does nothing to our allies around the world but at americans at home to to be confident with administration. >> sally yates tweeted this, and i'll read it, i mean, so you look at that.
12:17 pm
and you have president putin calling them politically. disturbing and shame leslie unpatriotic on veterans day. >> totally agree. look, there is so much evidence here. so many people validating this. we've had other countries intelligence agencies. we've had other heads of state. we had high people in our government at the cia, at the different congressional committees all say the same thing. and this president continues to side with vladimir putin. i think hillary clinton, and i know she's much a lined, she said it best when she said donald trump will turn out to be vladimir putin puppet. and that's what he's turned out to be. >> and we can't help but understand what the huge, tony, the huge back drop right now with developments coming out of msnbc and our reporting here on the russian investigation and what mueller is doing at the moment, moving surgically through his investigation,
12:18 pm
trying to g trying to get michael flynn to come his way and more information potentially from michael flynn. is this clearly what president trump is aiming at to discredit reports that putin led some sort of meddling with our election in 2016? >> of course. it's all about casting doubt on a lot of this investigation. but to go back to the question you asked to start this segment about whether there is actual evidence of russian meddling, look no further than sites like facebook and twitter, which twitter uses, there has been report after report russian agents sought to spread disinformation about the 2016 election. u.s. intelligence community said that. the companies themselves have said that. lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have said that. definitely evidence out there that kremlin inserted themselves into what happened during 2016. >> we also have reporting that
12:19 pm
again underlining the questions behind fusion gps now and related to this particular group also having some touch points with the democrats. >> absolutely t and, look, as outra outrageous as president's statements were, during the time that donald trump coincluded or aided wl russia, or that the president himself or his family has benefited financially since being president from russia. i mean these are two very different issues. there is no question that collusion occurred -- excuse me that meddling occurred by russia in our election. i think that's been proven as a fact. but what we are now waiting on is whether or not the president himself, members of his family, have benefited from russia through business dealings, et cetera. and so far there is no proof of that. and all of the tales that we have seen coming out of the mueller investigation likely won't be. so for any one waiting for this
12:20 pm
massive fire to finally be lit, i'm afraid that they are going to be disappointed. >> joel, do you want to respond to that reporting? >> yeah. look, opposition research firms are going to do opposition research. so that's not really headline news to me. i think what the news is how the president and his inner circle and how the people who really matter to this president responded when you could argue that the russians sent out a weather balloon to figure out if the trump inner circle team would be receptive to collusion and meddling and they were. and that's the bottom line that's where the focus needs to be. i don't think it is the right focus to sit here and do the what about ussism of, you know, what about fusion gps and democrats, they are in opposition represent search firm, that's not really news. the news is the president and his team did not push back when they had the chance to do right thing. >> and touch points across party lines is what you are under lying there having worked for
12:21 pm
clinton campaign previously. when you look at this tony, and i want to move on to the piece of reporting we are getting from four people familiar with the investigation, that mueller is under going at the moment, and that is a question of michael flynn and potentially striking a deal or having the conversation there of of receiving money from foreign entities to then enact certain processes, specifically a turkish cleric and he be released and extradited. >> yeah, you are absolutely right. they are looking into it. and i think it speaks to the broad nature of mueller's probe right now. they are clear from the beginning of this they were going to go down every trail they could find. so too were the house and senate intelligence committees which are further investigating. but all eyes are on flynn whether they can use that to flip him. >> since you are our tech guy in politics and a lewd go to social media and effect, and now
12:22 pm
looking week and a half later after all the report can came out when we had the heads of the platforms on the hill, where are we in that at the moment? is the hill feeling better about silicon valley? is silicon valley feeling better about the hill and it's understanding what it needs to know? >> no one is feeling better after the hearings last week. we had three hearings, two days, nine hours of testimony from facebook and google and twitter and coming out of that was a lot of frustration on lawmakers, republicans and democrats alike who feel they didn't get the answers, and what they've done to harden their platforms. and facebook took a lot of heat in particular, because lawmakers don't feel they did a full accounting what happened in to 16 what they have a grasp what they put up on the platform. >> regulation? >> likely not. at least for now. >> tony, thank you so much,

12:27 pm
loose women's secrets and men's too. incredibly. i call part of the trump effect, richard of the i do think the anguish of seeing donald trump win the presidency despite allegations by 14, 15, 16 women of these same sorts of things. i think was very devastating. and it prompted a lot more public speaking about this. harvey weinstein seems to have broken the dam with all of these revelations and also how disgusting and cruel they were. you know, i wanted to like louis c.k. apologize. the first time i read it, i think it's important he said it's true, and didn't gas light these women. on the other hand he made the false claim or con congratulated himself by saying i never did this without asking the women if they wanted to see my you know what. but the women never said yes we do sir. and in one case didn't ask. so still a weird justification
12:28 pm
going on. we still have to work with men what is the right kind of apology, just stay right out i'm so sorry for the harm i've caused you and help a bunch female comedians get their own show. because i don't think there is any space in our society that's as sexist as a comedy room. >> comedy room. some might say in politics. some might say, depends where you are at, right. but i understand what you are saying, absolutely. so if this is the silver lining of accusations of sexual assault and president coming out of 2016, giving the strength to women like leigh corfman to come forward, which is not easy, she say she struggled with this before she said yes. she did not want to come forward. >> no, there is strength in numbers. and women often feel as though they are demonized and
12:29 pm
criminalized in many cases when they come forward. and more importantly we know women are definitely categorized when they do. so many women are then muted and fear retribution so they don't come forward. and i think what we are seeing is men in power, there is often this, you know, they are incubated for most of their powerful rein. and most of their in discretions are buried. and what we are seeing is the burying of in discretions is taking place, and i think what we'll see is more women, because there aren't women in places of power, and lack of diversity, we often find that women aren't feeling as empowered as they are fou. but the presidency has allowed that culture to shift. >> so i want to talk to both of you one more time issues being listened to now just like when we talked about lbgt, equal
12:30 pm
rights for women, are we in the final stretch where reduce the disparity? >> i don't think we are in the final stretch but middle where people are listening and taking seriously and women are talking. on the other hand roy moore is giving a clinic in how not to talk about this. he's asking why these women are coming to tell these stories after 40 years? that's not uncommon that women blame themselves of the. >> painful. >> it's very painful. humiliating. one of his accusers is being attacked online. had to shut down all of her social media. someone published her address. going into her sexual history. so sort of understanding when roy moore says no women do this after 40 years. yes they do. >> are we going to see a wave of feminists, men and women feminists now being born because of these things we have seen across our papers? >> absolutely. and you'll begin to see a shift in power. see women really speaking up and feeling as though they have to advocate and champion and forge
12:31 pm
together and over turn this culture has that been allowed to exist. this boys club, if you will. again in hollywood particularly no one wanted to step forward and even sue a studio much less make allegations against a powerful man like harvey weinstein. so you will see this culture begin to change because women will no longer be silent and no longer allow their voices to be muted. >> and seems like the roy moore will take us forward another year on this topic along with what's happening in hollywood. thank you so much. we could do floert 30 minutes on this topic. still ahead a staunch dpenil from roy moore of sexual misconduct 40 years ago. we'll hear what he said today and how this race could impact the republican party in months coming. that's my girl!
12:32 pm
12:35 pm
>> roy moore, this morning, appearing at a veterans event in alabama denying his involvement with allegations of sexual misconduct with 14-year-old girl that happened almost 40 years ago when roy moore was 32. now we have more details on the alabama senate race. it's a tight one. coming up on december 12th. >> all right. well, a lot of fallout to these accusations against roy moore. but political angle it does raise an immediate question. for the republican party. senate seat should be absolute lock for them now at risk to going to democrats. remember, special election in december for alabama. this is before the accusations against roy moore hit this week. average in the polls came up 6 points. that's a lead for moore. maybe that's good for republicans. but think about this this is the closest race in alabama, closest senate race in 21 years. you have to go back to 1996 to
12:36 pm
find a senate race that was single digit race. this has been a one party state when it comes to federal office. so the fact this was close that was a big warning sign for republicans. now of course the question accusations about moore, what do they do, do they bring the numbers down further or help the democrats get into the lead here. also keep this in mind, we say alabama such an overwhelmingly republican state, but roy moore has been the exception to that rule. he last ran for office five years ago in alabama for the job of chief justice. remember ultimately got removed from this job. noup he won but look he won barely. 51.8% of the vote. same day, same election, mitt romney for president got 61%. so roy moore ran far behind the republicans. nearly lost this race. again he is such a lightning rod figure, even before the accusations this week. so again that's something democrats think of. maybe we have to change this. this is a statewide. we are talking federal office
12:37 pm
now. but roy moore clearly certain number of traditional republican voters in alabama who already want nothing to do with him. and then there is also this possibility. look, we don't know how this is going to play out. we know doug jones democratic candidate. we know roy moore is refusing to leave the race. if he does refuse, he stays on the ballot as republican. but how this scenario, there is the question if luther strange, appointed incumbent senator lost the republican nomination to roy moore, what if he ran as write incan date. any voter who don't want the democrat but not comfortable with moore, right my name in. the runoff 55 moore, unlikely luther strange could win as write in but could he split the republican party right down the middle and open up a lane for doug jones. that is possible. so everybody looking to see what luther strange does. that's ultimate wild card. >> thanks for that.
12:38 pm
i'd like to bring in msnbc contributor professor at the lbg school go long horns. let's start with that, when we look at that reporting coming out of steve, rachel, is that right a potential? do you think folks will be doing that in protest? >> well, i think it remains to be scene. ultimately this is going to be a case for the alabama voters to litigate. i think that there is going to be definitely some discussion of how to handle this. however, i do think alabama is a red state and i think you'll see that in the end. i do think a republican will prevail. >> republican will prevail. it's getting close though. and i want to pull up the latest poll that came out in the last 24 hours. basically tied. it looks like the margin of error plus or minus 4.3. but this coming from hq. roy moore 46. doug jones 46%. victoria, it's now trending, at
12:39 pm
least in the last 24 hours l against roy moore. >> a week ago this would have been unthinkable. it would have been like a unicorn to think the democrat and republican in alabama would be tied. so i think that a lot of this is going to come out, come down to turnout. so how strongly do people feel in alabama, say you are a republican, that you want a sensible, a moderate republican, and you don't want the democrat? what is that going to look like? or maybe people are disgusted and they stay home. so it's going to it be about turnout. and the other wrinkle to that is women. women historically turn out higher than men. so are women in alabama going to get ticked off and say i'm not going to vote against moore, i'm going to vote against the republican party, and give doug jones that win. so i think those are the two questions that i have in mind in the coming weeks and the polling is first turnout, and, second, how are the women going to cast
12:40 pm
their ball lot. especially those republican women. >> you know, as you look at turnout, one of the indicators might be endorsements. and at least when you look at the senate at the moment, rachel, there has been a score of senators calling for moore to withdraw, as you know, if the allegations are true. and of course that is the if. but the line starts with senator mitch mcconnell, then makes it all the way down to senator lindsey graham. but this is not alabama. and in alabama if you talk to knows who know alabama and our contributors who do talk to the political, if pule, connected in the state are saying they are going to stick with moore. >> yeah, i think that's right. look, regardless of what the rest of us think, this is a decision for alabama voters to make. and we can say all we want from washington, but itsd alabama voters are going to have to destied who they want to represent them in the sfat. and to be honest, mitch mcconnell didn't help the situation in the first place, right. there was a bloody battle in
12:41 pm
politics in alabama whether mcconnell guy or the will of the alabama voters. and so i think alabama feel fed up with the washington's finger wagging at them and saying this is who you have to pick. >> bannon argument. >> right. >> and i think you'll see that ply out in the polls. >> and this might be a question for the democrat, as he is looking at what might be the outcome in alabama. that coalition, as you were alluding to earlier is going to be single women, suburban women, minorities and as well mel ennals. is that going to translate to alabama? >> again, i keep coming back to turnout. obviously in alabama it's mainly white and black population. you don't have a very large latino or multi ethnic population like you do in other states. but at the same time it's about
12:42 pm
energizing that african-american base who historically have strong voter turnout. this is a special election. and we know that minorities and lower ses folks, according to political science studies that go back eons don't tend to turnout as much. so again mobilizing those people least likely to vote. but who lean d or at least open to voting for doug jones. so he has to look to the voter polls and pull out those ha haven't voted before and get them energized and out to the polls. >> we have a month to go. long time. so thank you both. >> thank you. >> all right. north korea slams president trump as he continues tour across asia. the tensions on the peninsula.
