>> the president sparked confusion and criticism with comments he made to reporters following a private meeting with russian president vladimir putin at the apec summit in vietnam on saturday. when asked if russia's attempt to interfere in the u.s. election came up in the conversation, trump responded "every time he sees me he says "i didn't do that" and i believe, i really believe that when he tells me that, he means it." the president criticized members of the u.s. intelligence community saying "i mean, give me a break, they're political hacks. you have brennan, you have clapper and you have comey. you look at that and you have president putin vehemently says he had nothing to do with that. now you're not going to get into an argument. you're going to start talking about syria and the ukraine. >> a day later trump appeared to walk back those comments after facing sharp criticism from republicans and democrats alike, clarifying his remarks during a press president with the vietnamese president sunday. he said "as to whether i believe it or not, i'm with our agencies especially as currently

constituted. not leaving it there, the president took to twitter to respond to critics writing "when will all the haters and fools out there realize that having a good relationship with russia is a good thing, not a bad thing. they're always playing politics. bad for our country. i want to solve north korea, syria, ukraine, terrorism and russia can greatly help." then adding a short time later "does the fake news media remember when crooked hillary clinton as secretary of state was begging russia to be our friend with the misspelled reset button? obama tried also but he had zero chemistry with putin." >> the president is in the philippines as well, earlier this morning he spoke at the asian summit along with philippine president rodrigo duterte. the stop is been one of his contentious ones. in the streets trump was greeted with massive and at times violent protests which included this enormous burning effigy made in a distinctive design.

saturday in a statement on north korean state media pyongyang called it a "warmonger's visit by the destroyer of world peace and stability and begged for a nuclear war." called him a dotard or old lieu nannic, depending on the translation. both mean the same thing, as is customary for trump he responded pretty quickly on twitter, "why would kim jong-un imsult me by calling me old, when i would never call him short and fat? oh well, i try so hard to be his friend, and maybe someday that will happen. trump was asked to elaborate on that friendship line while at a news conference in vietnam. >> i think anything's a possibility. strange things happen in life, that might be a strange thing to happen, but it's certainly a possibility. if that did happen, it would be a good thing for, i can tell you, for north korea, but it would also be good for lots of

other places and it would be good for the world. so certainly it is something that could happen. i don't know that it will, but it would be very, very nice if it did. >> you may recall that trump once said he would be "honored" to meet kim jong-un. trump has also had separate tweets over the weekend aimed at russia and china saying in both that progress is being made on the north korean front. want to turn to a develop story for the middle east after a deadly earthquake rocked the border of iraq and iran sunday evening. the 7.3 magnitude quake according to officials killed. 00 and left thousands injured. those numbers are expected to grow. ali rouzi joining us live. what is the latest with this earthquake? >> reporter: good morning. rescuers have been battling through the night along with the military to find people, survivors trapped in the collapsed buildings and towns

affected by the earthquake. the deputy of the iran province which appears to be the worst affected area of this earthquake told state television that people are still under the rubble and the death toll is likely to rise. this powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake on the iranian/iraqi border according to officials here has killed at least 300 people and thousands more have been injured, most of whom have been affected or are in iran. officials expect the casualty to rise as search and rescue teams reach remote areas affected by the earthquake and it's these remote rural areas houses are made of mud bricks that can crumble so easily after an earthquake and trap people underneath them. this earthquake was felt in several provinces of iran but the hardest hit area was karmansha, about ten miles from the iraqi border. we're hoping to get more information as the situation unfolds. >> iran sitting on major fault

lines there so when quakes like this hit they are so devastating as they were years ago. ali arouzi, thank you. back home, special election judge roy moore is threatening legal action that printed on the record allegations he molested a 14-year-old and pursued relationships with three other teenagers when he was in his 30s. speaking to a forum of about 150 people last night in huntsville, alabama, at which media was not permitted, moore said that "the washington post" published false allegations, "for which they will be sued." moore provided no details about what type of lawsuit he planned to file or when he planned to file it, but on saturday said that he will provide new information within days and denied the claim of sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old. >> i've been investigated more than any other person in this country. to think that grown women would wait 40 years to come before,

right before an election to bring charges is absolutely unbelievable. there are investigations going on in the next few days, there will be revelations about the motivations and the content of this article. they will be brought to the public. we fully expect the people of alabama to see through this charade. >> so moore did not respond to nbc's questions when leaving his event on saturday, but he did answer some on sean hannity's radio show on friday. take a listen. >> would it be unusual for you as a 32-year-old guy to have dated a woman as young as 17? that would be a, what, 15-year difference, or a girl 18, do you remember dating girls that young at that time? >> not generally, no. if i did, you know, i'm not going to dispute anything, but i don't remember anything like that. >> but you don't specifically remember having any girlfriend that was in her late teens even at that time?

they'll pass tax reform. >> i feel there's strong support for this. we continue to make improvements at every step of the way but i'll tell you what, our republicans in the house know that it is time to deliver on this economy, and grow these paychecks by getting rid of this current tax code. that's exactly what we're going to do. >> and as americans wait to see how tax reform will affect their paychecks, mitch mcconnell is backtracking on his claim that middle class americans would not see a tax increase under the republicans plan. mcconnell told the "new york times" friday he misspoke and could not guarantee absolutely no one would see a tax increase. with the house and senate aiming to get their plans on the same page, there are a number of differences between the two. the house plan allows the deduction of $10,000 in property taxes, repeals the estate tax over six years. cuts the corporate tax rate to 20% and eliminates deduction for medical expenses and student loans. the senate plan eliminates

deductions for state and local taxes, does not repeal the estate tax, delays the 20% corporate tax cut by one year and keeps deductions for medical expenses and student loans. republican leaders in the house and senate are working to make progress on passing their bills in a push to pass comprehensive tax reform by year's end. joining us now from raleigh, north carolina, politico's daniel littman. coauthor of "the political playbook." what do you think, ambitious or impossible? >> they're actually making some progress, and so you could see the house bill get passed by the end of this week but the bigger problem is in the senate. there's huge differences between the two bills that the house conference about sill not like the senate bill. the senate bill does not address, does not help the state and local tax deductions because they don't need the democratic votes from members so this is still an uphill climb for

republicans. >> let's switch gears and i want to ask you about roy moore, certainly something drawing the attention of a lot of gop officials locally and nationally. this gop seems to be somewhat divided on how exactly to respond over the weekend. pat toomey telling chuck todd he would not comment on whether or not the senate would seat him if he does win. what are the party's options, the republican party's options? should he end up winning? >> if he wins, and it's still a tossup, the democrat doug jones could very likely pull it out which would be an amazing feat for a democrat to win in alabama, but they could seat him and then immediately expel him and you'd have the alabama governor had a new election or deny him from key committees. you could not have a member of the gop conference. could you basically try to isolate him so he's a pariah in

the senate, which would be a very interesting thing to cover. >> it will be interesting to see how far they actually go. >> especially since he has also the support of people like steve bannon and that part of the gop. >> they're not abandoning him. they love him. turning to the president's trip overseas, what reaction are you hearing to the president's comments for sort of seemingly taking the side of putin over the u.s. intelligence committee and walking it back a day later? >> i think a lot of people in d.c. are used to trump buddying up to putin. this is not a surprise. he's been saying nice things about putin for years but it's still pretty shocking that trump would side with putin, and then have to backtrack, because the u.s. intelligence agencies work for him and they have concluded that russia did, indeed, interfere in the election. trump is pretty alone on this. you saw people like john mccain put out statements after trump's

excerpts, he could throw his hat in the ring for a 2020 presidential race. what kind of early reaction are you hearing from democrats? >> i think democrats feel like the field is going to be so wide open in 2020. remember those republican debate stages in 2016 when there were like 15 candidates on stage. there's going to be like 20, 25 candidates major party figures who are going to run. i think people think that joe biden is, they respect him but they think he may be a little too old to be an opponent for president trump, and so there is a theory going around in d.c. that if he announces for president a couple years and says i'm only going to serve one term, and then i'll hand it over basically to whoever my vp candidate is, maybe ka camala harris, that might be a good option for him if he wants to run. >> we could see 20 or 25 candidates on that stage, as we did back in the last race, is

there sort of, are the democrats suffering from a lack of unification? is that something they need to get there before mid terms in 2018 and especially before 2020? >> that's a great point. i think there are some signs of unity in terms of defeating republicans next year in the mid terms. nothing gets people on the same team as you know, a common opponent and i think democrats feel like they have a golden opportunity for a huge wave election, if they're going to win, you know, races in the south, maybe in alabama next month, then if they can all just agree on let's defeat the republicans, then that's a good way forward, but there are fissures in the party between the moderate wing and the sanders and warren wing. that's not going away yet. >> it's interesting to see if bernie sanders throws his hat in the ring for 2020. daniel, maybe you want to tell us what's coming out in today's

script, it has been a contentious end of the trip for the president, to say the least. no? >> reporter: yes, and he went back on twitter, and so that caused some of the problems, a lot of people speculating why this happened. is he tired, and so he has lost the discipline? is it because melania trump, who is sometimes a moderating force returned to the united states? whatever the reason, at least three examples of controversy that's been caused here. first the president suggesting that he believed russian president vladimir putin when he said he was not involved in the 2016 election. of course, that would fly in the face of everything that intelligence agencies have said, and he personally insulted at least three former intelligence chiefs, calling two of them political hacks, and a third a liar. they fought back. people on the hill fought back and then the president tried to walk back that statement saying no, he just believes that vladimir putin believes that he didn't interfere in the 2016

election. then there was that back-and-forth with north korean leader kim jong-un, who had some tough words for the president, calling him old. the president said on twitter again, you know, he wouldn't call him short and fat. he said he tries to be friends with him, and then later suggesting that maybe they could be friends, and finally here, with rodrigo duterte, there was a question would when they met he bring up the whole idea of human rights. this is someone who has run a campaign and anti-drug campaign that has included thousands of extra judicial killings. well, according to the white house, he brought it up briefly, but according to duterte's office it didn't come up at all. in fact, the president seemed sympathetic to duterte in how he's trying to fight the battle of drugs here in the philippines, and so a couple of meetings with allies here, both

to make it slippery. watch out on the bridges, too. temperatures are warming up before after it was so cold over the weekend, some cold may be holding on in a few spots. above freezing albany swards but the higher elevations are still cold enough. up in northern new england we're still in the 20s. with the cloudy conditions a raw day. the worst weather by far out there this morning is areas in oregon and portland. winds are starting to howl, i'm sure it's keeping more than one person up. high wind warnings in effect. winds could reach up to 80 miles per hour, isolated locations, enough to knock down trees and power outages. this is the biggest storm on the map. the cities the winds aren't as strong, down in the valleys more prote protected. 40 to 50-mile-per-hour winds in seattle could cause minor power outages. high wind warnings for coastal areas and high spots near bellingham, wind advisories for seattle down to portland. rainfall will also be an issue, minor flooding in the olympics, rainfall totals could reach up to five inches. that big storm will stay in the northwest over the next couple

days, guys, and that will be the big weather story of the week. >> thanks, bill. one week after a gunman opened fire in a church in a small town in texas the community is honoring the 6 people killed. >> the congregation at the if, baptist church of sutherland springs gathered for its first sunday service since the tragedy. ron allen was there and has more. >> reporter: inside the first baptist church sanctuary where a gunman killed 26 people now sit 26 chairs to honor the lives lost, arranged where each victim sat. it took 72 hours to repair and restore the sanctuary. the pastor said to remind everyone that love never fails. there was an outpouring of love under gray skies, hundreds drove to the small town of 700 to the first first baptist church service since the massacre. so many people the tent covered a baseball field. >> i just wanted to show up and show respect. >> as a fellow texan and as just

welcome back. bad weekend for bit koin. facing angry shareholders after the $50 billion loss in value this summer. carolyn ross joining us live from london. let's start with ge here. how do they reassure investors here? >> it will be a crucial day for ge and john flannery as he addresses investors today. ahead that have investor day today, "the wall street journal" has reported that the company will be announcing it will be focusing on three core areas of the business. aviation, power and health care. and it will exit much of the rest of ge's businesses in an effort to slash costs, improve profitability, but also investors obviously hoping that that dividend will remain stable. moving on, we had some

interesting news on uber over the weekend. uber's board has now clinched a deal that will pave the way for multibillion dollar investment for softbank, who about a month ago agreed to invest in the company to the tune of around $10 billion. but then that had been put on the back burner because there was a spat, a legal battle between u bechlt r's former ceo and a key investor in the company called benchmark. that has been put aside. >> also bitcoin previously surpassed by its rival over the weekend after a huge drop in value, of course. how concerned should investors be here? >> well, look, if you've invested in bitcoin, you know you are in for a wild ride. bitcoin is something, cryptocurrency that's risen seven-fold this year. big swings late saturday down by
