what it says about where we are in this moment of history for this country. the man behind the infamous trump tower meeting between donald trump jr. and other campaign officials and a russian lawyer is now coming forward with an interview publicist spoke to one paper and is about to pe to the mueller investigation. what he's saying about his role in all of this? and president trump taking social media vows for putting a pause on a reversal of a ban on importing trophies from elephants killed by hunter in africa. we'll talk about that story and much more and we begin the politics of misconduct in the very latest on the allegations swirling against roy moore, silent again today from the alabama senate candidate about the nine women who have accused him of improper actions but no shortage of opinions on the sunday talk shows. >> i hope that the good voters of alabama decide not to send him to the united states senate.
2:01 pm
>> it's going to be up to the people of alabama to make that decision. >> we've not spent that much time looking at the specifics of these allegations. you've arrived at a certain conclusion because of a political persuasion. >> it's worse in part because we have a system in place that allows for the harasser to go unchecked. >> we want to break down the politics of misconduct on several fronts right now the key factors to whether roy moore wins or loses in alabama. the al franken case, we're looking at what happens to the sitting senator going forward and donald trump's tweets about al franken. they all open the flood gates about the more than dozen women who have accused president trump of sexual misconduct. joining me to discuss all of this, opinion columnist for the "the washington post," strategist noel la pour and great to have all of you with us this sunday afternoon. lot to talk about let's start with this question.
2:02 pm
starting with alabama.com, they've endorsed democrat doug jones somewhat of an unprecedented move. the first line of their endorsement, this election is a turning point for women in alabama, a chance to make their choices heard in a state that has silenced them for too long. noel, let me begin with you and ask you if you believe that the women voters of alabama are actually seeing the race that way because i know just from our kofrmg and our reporters on the ground we've seen, you know, women voters in alabama actually show some support for roy moore, the female governor of the state says she's going to vote for moore even though she has no reason to disbelieve his accusers. >> i think that's -- that's the biggest heart break for me is the fact that a woman governor, governor ivy came out and made a statement while she believes the victim, she doesn't doubt the
2:03 pm
victim, she's going to go ahead and vote for the man that caused them so much pain. it contradicts itself. i really hate that. now, with that said, i really do think it's going to come down to the women, the women's vote in alabama is going tock t be the deciding factor because i think you'll have some conservative women that are conflicted and they won't be able to pull the lever for somebody that they feel, you know, has hurt so many of these victims. some of these people, i mean, 14 years old, it's really bothersome to a lot of people not just women, men too and because a lot of people have been saying this could be your daughter or whatever. so i really feel like it's going to come down to these women to see what they're going to do. you may either get one of two choices. you may either get a woman who's just going to say i'm not going
2:04 pm
to participate, i'm not going to vote or you may actually for the first time, see a woman cross over and hold her nose and vote for a democrat because she can't bear the thought of voting for moore. >> speaking of democrats, the democrats are really outnumbered almost two to one in alabama so they essentially need a big turnout, you know, among their voters, among minorities, among women. do you think they're going to get that? are they going to get a strong turnout? how do you even gauge the likelihood of that happening? >> it's a great question. i think that polling and understanding of turnout in alabama in 2017 in this year, it's all difficult to totally understand what it's going to look like. i agree very strongly with al.com, endorsement, the way they put it, this has become a referendum of what we accept of our national leader. one place i'll disagree with them, is it just about women? i think it's about everyone. this is everyone saying what
2:05 pm
will we accept of our national leaders and the message it sends to victims all the way down to say, if we understand this is what someone in power can do and has been doing for years, part of the commentary around this race is the reason these women never came forward is because it was common knowledge. it was common knowledge around him that someone -- district attorney in his 30s was going after teenage girls. we didn't know -- our society is changing. women in every walk of life are saying, this is no longer what i'm willing to accept. this is not a courtroom. this is a ballot box so we will see a lot of people saying, this is no longer a society i'm willing to accept. >> it would be interesting to see how the voter turnout changes if at all as a result of this. katherine let me ask you about the sentiment coming out of the roy moore campaign and this is summed up by steve morgan. he said that, you know, voters
2:06 pm
in alabama, they don't like to be told what to do and the way this kind of debate is taking place in this country about roy moore is somehow it's being portrayed as everyone outside of alabama telling people don't vote for roy moore, the mitch mcconnells, the republican establishments even president trump who are not weighing in saying it's up to the people to decide, that could resonate loudly even more loudly than people saying don't vote for roy moore, will that strategy work? >> it would be interesting to see. roy moore's whole strategy, his whole campaign shtick is how he's being persecuted and he's the righteous messenger of these poor put upon christian voters and the fact that the media and the washington elites are attacking him, it's not evidence of his wrongdoing, it's evident of him being in the right. it's not only from washington, it's not only from "the
2:07 pm
washington post" or mitch mcconnell or even from the white house attacking or at least causing -- calling into question the character of roy moore, it's also alabama political papers. you mentioned the al.com endorsement of his opponent. the question going forward is, yes, maybe alabama voters don't want to listen to what "the washington post" reporters have to say, they don't trust that reporting but what about the people who walk hoamong them. what about the fact that this was an open secret that he was banned from a mall. in new jersey that would be a death sentence. the fact that he's banned from a mall should be so damning and -- >> not so in alabama in the '60s and '70s, right, that it's not a death sentence for a politician? >> no, no. it should be -- it should be alarming, yes. so whether or not he can turn this weakness into a strength, that everybody's attacking me, therefore i'm the candidate you
2:08 pm
should vote for will really depend on whether alabama voters listen to their fellow alabamaions. >> let's switch gears and talk about the other side of the aisle and that's what's happening with al franken, a story that is also causing a lot of alarms on capitol hill. what might happen after his admission of inappropriate actions with lee yan tweeden, something that franken himself has acknowledged, he's asked for an ethics committee investigation of his actions. before i get your thought on that, let me play you this sound byte from congresswoman jackie speier. >> i also think it has to be determined if there's a pattern of sexual harassment, incidents have to be severe or they have to be ones that happen over a period of time. >> so what do you think will happen to senator franken? >> i think they'll have a senate ethics committee investigation and they will establish or attempt to establish exactly the
2:09 pm
question that congresswoman speier mentioned which is is there a pattern. the behavior that senator franken has acknowledged is offensive, it is something that is not acceptable to most people, certainly in the current culture context we live in but the question of whether it mer its a harsh punishment from the united states senate i think we're far from knowing that. there is the offensive picture that he posed for that kind of mocked leeann tweeden. to my way of thinking, the more serious allegation which is the forcible come on that is going to be probed and they'll try to figure out what the context was and whether he's done it to other people. if he hasn't, i suspect that he'll be chided by his colleagues by he will remain serving in the senate. >> let me ask you, the president weighing in on the al franken issue in a series of tweets.
2:10 pm
he's been much more quiet on the roy moore story perhaps not surprisingly, but giving the numerous sexual assaults accusations against the president himself including one that may end up in court, do you think it's wise that the president weighs in on al franken while remaining silent on roy moore? >> the reason why trump has reasoned in on al franken is because al franken admitted that he did it and he apologized for doing it. now roy moore is denying it and saying that all these people that come forward it's a witch hunt against him and the timing is suspicious and blah, blah, blah. so i think trump has not weighed in on that specifically because roy moore is denying the allegations, so he is -- he's remained silent on that. now al franken has said he did it. looking at al franken, here is something that's going to be difficult. he has -- he's admitted he's done it and i think that they
2:11 pm
should take a stand, get him out because this is going to set forth a pattern that if you do it, you apologize then it's okay, and you can keep going. >> guys, we have a lot more to talk about. emily, thank you very much for joining us. still to come this hour. president trump blasting out social media praise for his decision to pause a plan that would have reversed a ban on trophy heads from big game hunts in parts of africa. it was a plan that his own administration put into the works and up next, the man at the center of an infamous meeting involving russians is finally speaking out to the media and hopefully to investigators soon. this as "saturday night live" imagines a meeting between julian assange and the trump children. >> and if you help my father he'll help you. he is always loyal to his friends. >> what about chris christie, erik? and rudy giuliani?

rick stengel and katherine is with us at "the washington post." so nick, let me begin with you and ask you about this ongoing question surrounding goldstone. he is giving an interview or gave an interview to the times in london in which he said his defense about this was, if i am guilty of anything is that i hyped up the information that i was saying to trump jr., to the kids when he sent that e-mail saying i've got some information that is worthy of your consideration. do you think that is an argument that is going to hold up under the scrutiny of the mueller investigation? >> not at all. this was a puff piece. this was a soft brawl interview. he was not asked the real hard questions. in that first e-mail that he sent on june 4th, he said that he had information that was incriminating against hillary clinton and that he was going to bring that because he was first
2:17 pm
going to send it to donald trump sr. through his secretary but he felt that it would be best to bring it in person to don jr. no questions were asked about that. that information very likely was the e-mails that were stolen from the democratic national committee. that's what this all centers around. we know just from the papadopoulos guilty plea that they knew about this -- these e-mails as early as april of 2016. >> so why do you think he gave the interview then? why would he put himself out there? now he's on the record saying that this information i hyped up and it wasn't that big but if there are e-mails that the mueller has that could totally contradict that he could have put himself in a bind? >> it could. i don't think he'd ever show up in the united states. he would be a fool to show up here and i don't think any lawyer would allow him to do
2:18 pm
that. >> we'll see how that all plays out. rick, let me ask you about this pattern that emerges about jared kushner, where information and e-mails not disclosed by jared kushner or his attorneys to the mueller investigation. these are e-mails that they found -- he was on, that he was either cc'd on or he forwarded on to others but he himself did not disclose that. what is it with the pattern of misinformation and jared kushner and him forgetting all kinds of information when it comes to this? >> he's obviously not very well organized. his mistakes on the form where he had to go back multiple times. i'm actually not unsympathic to the fact that he got a million e-mails and he's never done this before, he got the e-mail, it was forwarded to him and he did the right thing. let's not take a heating with these guys, right, because we have no idea about it. in fact, speaking of those guys, back to the goldstone things, the russians tap in to the most

giving him credit for stopping something his own administration put out there as a possibility in the first place? >> honestly, i have no idea. i have no idea what the rational for this decision can be. economically there is no evidence that trophy hunting elephants is going to conserve elephant populations. it's foolish. elephants across africa especially in zimbabwe remain under threat from the ivory trade, for being slaughtered for the flesh of the elfanlt. you even have hundreds of elephants being killed by si poison. a brutal way to die. rather than -- i have no idea why the administration even though this was a good time to do this in the first place. >> brian, how much do you think this decision has to do with his own sons will well documented

>> yes. i think that's right and i think in particular the trump administration's inching towards recognition of assad, talking about, yes, he needs to go but the syrian people have to vote him out, that is a change in policy and that means we are aligning with mr. assad, the russians, hezbollah and iran and just to echo what others are saying, i think that's the wrong strategy and let's judge it by the result. it's not achieving the results that president trump has promised and therefore they need to have a different approach. >> all this happens as citizens continue to die by the day. let me ask you about this tweet that president trump put out about the ucla player. they're not grateful for what i did, i should've left them in jail. it sounds like the president of the united states touting that he helped get involved in a foreign country's judicial process to help americans and i'm wondering is there a quid
2:46 pm
pro quo here. how do you read this? >> this is what diplomats do all the time. you talk to people about getting americans released. what's so appalling about this is he doesn't understand the job description. he will represents all americans. he represents these three young men. he doesn't need to be thanked by the father of one of them to get them out. that's what an emperor feels like and it's just a complete misappropriation of what the job is. >> i wonder how americans would feel if the roles were reversed and three chinese basketball players were here and we saw the president of china yield that kind of power on our judicial system. i'm sure it does happen. >> it is a quid pro quo, this is below the level of the mass policy. >> great to have all of you with us. thank you for your time today. who do you trust? three major alabama newspapers coming out against roy moore endorsing the democratic doug jones. how voters are responding?

because nobody can beat the men and women of gillette. gillette - the best a man can get. the unpredictability of a flaree may weigh on your mind. thinking about what to avoid, where to go, and how to work around your uc. that's how i thought it had to be. but then i talked to my doctor about humira, and learned humira can help get and keep uc under control... when certain medications haven't worked well enough. humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. before treatment, get tested for tb. tell your doctor if you've been to areas where certain fungal infections are common and if you've had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flu-like symptoms or sores. don't start humira if you have an infection. raise your expectations and ask your gastroenterologist

of influence and every sphere of his life for 40 years. it just can't no be done. and that's why we stand with judge moore. >> that was a supporter of senate candidate roy moore. president trump won alabama by a wider margin they ronald reagan did. but in the wake of the moore scandal a recent poll suggests that democratic challenger doug jones is leading that race and contributions to his campaign have skyrocketed. for more on this race, i'm now joined by alabama political reporter josh moon and joining us cnbc editor at large john harwood and a political strategist. i want to play some sound from a friend of a roy moore accuser. leigh corfman, recounting corfman retelling the story of her counter with roy moore more then a decade ago. listen to this. >> she interrupted the conversation by saying he had
2:52 pm
molested her when she was either a young teenager or when she was 14. it's been a long time, so i can't remember the exact conversation. but she was deadly serious and after she finished the room was quiet. and i believed her. >> so josh, you know, at this point there are a few questions here. one, are alabama voters undecided about the truth of these allegations? are the sides pretty solidly drawn, yeah, maybe they're true, but we're still going to stick with roy moore because this was many years ago, he was a good guy, he had the christian community rallying behind him. which one is it? >> you know, it's kind of a mix of those. there are a number of people who disbelieve the allegations. but mostly those are the people
2:53 pm
that are in kind of the cult of roy moore which is something that's been -- you know, that's been around here for quite some time now. i know it's made it to the national stage now. i guess it's poked her head out from the state borders a couple of different times during his tenure in his career here. but i mean, this is something that a lot of his followers are going to believe. or disbelieve these people. they're going to believe him over anybody that comes out against him. now, the rest of the state here -- it's a majority of the state think that at best, there are things that make them too suspect to vote for roy moore. so i don't think it's in any way, shape or form the whole state that believes in him. >> it reads in part, how can we look our colleagues our partners and our children in the eyes and tell they're worth less than insuring one political party
2:54 pm
keeps a senate seat? is that argument, josh, do you think likely to sway voters in alabama? >> it will, but it's going to sway some -- the people who are -- and it's a really small group of people who were there going to hold their nose and vote for roy moore i. don't believe most of those people are still going to vote for doug jones. as a matter of fact, i don't believe he's up by eight points in this, but i believe it may keep them home on election day. instead of going out and holding their nose and voting for moore. >> this may come down to voters are turnout. john, let me ask you quickly, let me read you a message from an alabama voter. he had this message for roy moore. josh lambert saying, please hold a press conference an actual press conference and take questions. it would help me as a voter. now, we know from our reporterers and the national reporters who have kind of all flooded alabama, they have been trying to ask him the tough
2:55 pm
questions now for the last couple of weeks pretty straight up. he hasn't done so. is it likely he'll do so in the next couple of weeks? >> i would be stunned if he did. he doesn't want to answer the question and to josh's point a minute ago i think he's right. there's going to be a turnout effect. and some persuasion effect. it's not large but it doesn't need to be large if you look at the fox poll that came out this week he's losing a significant number of young people as well as republican women. and you don't have to turn the entire moore cadre against him to win the election. he was at 50 in the fox poll. he may not be up eight points and i think democrats suspect he's -- in washington suspect he's not up eight points, but you don't need that many defections in american politics to tilt an election. you need in most places for democrats in alabama but right now the trends are looking good for jones. >> we got a report that the
2:56 pm
young republican federation is suspending their support unless moore can refute the allegations. do you think there's permanent damage down to the alabama republicans and nationally because of this scandal? >> yes, absolutely. it will be bad if they lose it because of roy moore and it will be bad if they win it because of roy moore. either way it's bad scenario because if he wins it, this is still going to be hanging over his head and it will be very hard to do good policy with that hanging over your head. >> certainly will raise a lot of questions for mitch mcconnell if he does win and he has to be seated in the u.s. senate. josh moon, john harwood, noel, thank you for joining us. that'll do it for this week. join me next sunday to break town the major stories of the week. reach out to me on social media. we'll be right back. hi! okay, so you've got two friends here. yes. this is the j.d. power award for dependability. now i want you to give it to the friend that you think is most dependable.

ohhhh. ughh. wow. that's just not fair. does she have to? she doesn't have to! oh, i don't? no, but it's a tough choice, isn't it? yes. well luckily, chevy makes it a little easier. cause it's the only brand to earn j.d. power dependability awards for cars, trucks and suvs - two years in a row. that's amazing. chevy's a name you can trust! before i hadburning, oting, pins-and-needles of diabetic nerve pain, these feet... grew into a free-wheeling kid... loved every step of fatherhood... and made old cars good as new.

but i couldn't bear my diabetic nerve pain any longer. so i talked to my doctor and he prescribed lyrica. nerve damage from diabetes causes diabetic nerve pain. lyrica is fda approved to treat this pain, from moderate to even severe diabetic nerve pain. lyrica may cause serious allergic reactions, suicidal thoughts or actions. tell your doctor right away if you have these, new or worse depression, unusual changes in mood or behavior, swelling, trouble breathing, rash, hives, blisters, muscle pain with fever, tired feeling or blurry vision. common side effects: dizziness, sleepiness, weight gain, swelling of hands, legs, and feet. don't drink alcohol while taking lyrica. don't drive or use machinery until you know how lyrica affects you. those who've had a drug or alcohol problem may be more likely to misuse lyrica. now i have less diabetic nerve pain. and i love smoothing the road ahead for others. ask your doctor about lyrica. that was just a'ight for me. yo, checi mean,t dawg. you got the walk. you got the stance.. but i wasn't really feeling it. you know what, i'm not buying this. you gotta come a little harder dawg. you gotta figure it out.

this sunday, politics, sexual harassment and re-examining old attitudes. nine women now have come forward with accusations against republican roy moore. >> he just grabbed my behind. >> i thought that he was going to rape me. >> but moore and his supporters remain defiant. >> and i'll quit standing when they lay me in that box and put me in the ground. >> are republicans better off without roy moore in the senate? then democratic senator al franken facing his own accusation. >> his smashed his lips against my face and stuck his tongue in my mouth so fast. >> and now the country is
