find out how at sanfranciscodignity.com. the fight for the future of the internet heats up as the federal communications commission is expected to vote to end net neutrality rules next month. it's the concept internet service providers like comcast, one of the nation's leading internet providers must treat access to all websites equally. supporters of the repeal argue obama era net neutrality rules stifle innovation and hurt tech companies. proponents of this including giants like google, facebook and apple argue it will give internet companies broad authority over the speed of the internet allowing faster access to some websites and slower to others. joined by founder and ceo, former ceo of reputation.com, industry pioneer of online digital things and all things privacy. i have to figure out a way to

introduce you. i talk to you so much, you're great and so smart. your takeaway, interesting. we had a talk yesterday. you're worried the repeal of the net neutrality rules could freeze the internet in time. what do you mean by that? >> very interesting. most people who object to the overturning of the obama era net neutrality rules, which i support, by the way. object to overturning them. i am with obama on this. most who object predict that say comcast or at&t will raise rates or point to, for example, new zealand did not have net neutrality rules. the absence of these rules in new zealand means on the phone using video, a message pops up, do you want extra speed to watch video the next five days? pay five new zealand dollars and you'll be fine. you pay by the drink. pay as you go. i'm worried about a much more pernicious version of the outcome arising from the

diminution of this. i'm worried you'll lose access to a lot of the internet. why? say you pay, sake of argument $100 for at&t or comcast at your home. everything is treated equally, all the internet. maybe in the future comcast rates says, you want to payonly $10 a month for internet? good deal. guess what? that $10 a month package only includes facebook. you only get facebook for $10 a month. why? in this imagined future, facebook subsidizes at&t or comcast to giving you that as long as it's only facebook and instagram which, of course, facebook owns. the small companies that actually represent innovation -- >> the world in which you operate.

weigh for themselves. certain internet companies say, netflix, for example, particularly using between apparently a quarter and a half of the bandwidth in the united states in the evening hours. so many are watching video online. this puts a burden on comcasts and so forth of the world. these guys say, we cannot afford, we, comcasts and at&t of the world cannot afford to put new pipe in the ground and new infrastructure and cable in the ground. we need this demolition of the rules. i oppose these but that's the argument for it so you have it and happy thanksgiving. >> and right. sometimes means there might be middle ground here. the isps saying not going to do away with it and do what you just suggested. >> exactly. good, smart way to solve it. for example, companies over certain revenue would be subject to a certain set of rules they might get to pay as you go. easily you could establish arm's length rules, profitability at a certain level or revenue of a certain level over a certain number of employees.
