3:14 am
military equipment in exchange for something. but those are very marginal deals. the biggest thing i'm surprised about is congress. you would have thought that possibly, he would have been able work out some better deals and negotiations with congress. but, obviously, unlike in past deals, where you are negotiating one on one with someone, congress, doesn't, it's not hundreds of people at a time. >> that caught him off guard. it's almost like he's given up his hands. >> theoretically, he is not traditionally a republican or a democrat. he's there for himself. so he could reach across the aisle in a way that others haven't. by my count he's made one deal across with the democrats. that was this temporary three-month extension of the spending deal. >> not on the tax be ill. >> he hasn't in a big way. i think he got caught up in the traditional washington zero some politics, his team is the republican. democrats certainly aren't going to reach out and help him.
3:15 am
it's been basically politics as usual albeit with a more flamboyant guy. >> why doesn't he cut deals with conduct schumer? why is it they need to get 52 out of 55 republicans, the same old, all it takes is three republicans to say no and it all crashes and burns. why doesn't he reach over and grab five or ten from the other side or write a tax be ill the democrats are willing to go along with? >> i don't think trump understands how to make a deal on equal footh. most of it is i have money. you need know get this thing done. he's talking to people, i don't need your power, your assistance. everyone around him is cutting deals, jared kushner is cutting deals, paul man a the part is cutting deals, pap top slus cutting deals. >> those aren't the deals, deals about not going to prison for a long time. anyway, coming up, trump's trouble with the truth. the washington post has been counting auto trump's

say. as much as he's good as being quick off the cuff. in formal settings he's anxious and repeats himself because he doesn't know the next thing to say if he's not just riffing. >> often it happens when he's on teleprompters. he's reading words somebody else wrote for him, probably the first time. he goes, yeah, ancient culture, really important. so he's agreeing with the guy that wrote the speech, but really he's just agreeing with himself. >> apparently. >> if on the -- >> he's president of the united states. >> it might also be a bit of branding son so branding on some of the points where he wants to repeat it. sometimes you have to brand names, repeat it and bang people over the head. i would agree, sometimes on the formal remarks, he'll also be reading from the teleprompter, and it sounds scripted and awkward. he'll take a moment and pause or thrown in a trump phrase, and i'll tell you, it's going to be like we have never seen before,

true thing is it is all about himself. >> how does he get us into the story? >> he succeeded in gaining the attention, but the whole idea of the bully pulpit is you use it to advance your agenda. he's got all our attention. >> but jimmy carter, i pay tribute to him, could have kept our attention 24/7. he's constantly putting on a reality show that's never stopping. when he got elected, he began a four-year reality show, 24/7. >> four to eight years. i'm old enough to remember when people complained that obama gave too many speeches. he doesn't have a policy agenda. it's a trump agenda. it's focussed on him. between twitter and his coverage. >> how does he do it? ble. >> he taps into the fuel of american politics which is rage. he elicits or brings rage out
