thursday, december 7th. we will get to the reaction, of course to president trump's decision on israel policy. first, we begin with a greeing emergency in southern california, part of interstate 405 in los angeles, one of the temporary freeways had to be shut down. take a look at those flames, they have burned more than 100,000 acres since tuesday. wind gusts could reap up to 80 miles per hour, hundreds of homes across southern california have already been destroyed. authorities are urging people to take evacuation orders very seriously. 200,000 have been forced to evacuate. president trump tweeting his

thoughts and prayers were with everyone in the path of these wildfires. joining me now, a special correspondent, scott cohen, incredible sights and sounds from that fire there. what more are you seeing on the ground? ? well the ting that we're looking at and that really serve looking at and feeling is the wind. it's picking up. the forecasters are saying this could be the peak. now, it's nothing like that where i am now. when you get up into the hills. they feed upon themself, that's where the issue becomes very severe. what they have been looking for, because in an 80-mile-an-hour

wind gust, you can't do a lot of firefighting. so their looking for embers. this fire in ventura, the so-called thomas fire, 90,000 miles is roughly the size of the city of detroit. >> it's hard to see how this is getting so close to homes and residents, we are thinking about that at this time. scott cohen, we will talk to you later in the show. thank you president trump has officially announced the united states recognizes jerusalem as the capital of israel. take listen. >> i have determined that it is time to officially recognize jerusalem as the capital of

that he was to receive dirt, nbc news since learned the russian lawyer said don jr. was seeking incriminating evidence on the clinton foundation. back in july, the "post" reported it was actually donald trump, himself, who dictated the misstatement that don jr. used, claiming the meeting was about adoption, yesterday he told the house intel adviser hope hicks the day the story broke and she acted as an intermediary to the president. don jr. says he did not talk to him until the next day but is refusing saying it is provoked under attorney/client privilege because both their lawyers were also on the call. the top house intel committee disagrees with that. >> he acknowledged having discussed the june 9th meeting

and e-mails that went into establishing that meeting after those e-mails became public. he acknowledged discussing that matter with his father but refused to answer questions about that discussion on the basis of a claim of attorney/client privilege. in my view, there is no attorney/client privilege that protects a discussion between father and son. >> president trump is set to meet with chuck schumer and nancy pelosi, their goal an agreement on the year end budget. republicans do not need democratic support to push their tax bill through. they do, in fact, need it to pass a spending bill and avoid a government shutdown. pelosi and schumer backed out of a white house meeting last week, after the president tweeted --

election. are undecided voters you think, republicans especially, any closer to making up their mind? >> reporter: it's interesting, we're now just five days away. it's very much similar like the conversations i've had over the last two weeks, particularly with republican voters, asking them that very question of what will get you to vote for roy moore or doug jones on tuesday and i'm told consistently, it's a game-time decision, whether they ultimately go to the polls is the question. because people are really at a loss, especially republicans, who have come into grips for voting for roy moore under the allegations that currently exist. particularly when you look at suburbs, like here in birmingham. some of your more moderate conservatives, montgomery, mobile, whether they will be able to come out on tuesday. there is one option on the ballot that i think is interesting, worth noting. we've seen a ballot that has

been released. there is an option to choose on that ballot, the republican party. the down ballot. there is one ra is to choose from, but it gives team an opportunity to vote republican without actually putting their check mark next to the name of roy moore. >> interesting, at the end of the day, that will not result in the senator. so, interesting to note that on the ballot. i also know you are anticipating this election as well. you have been in alabama for a month or. so so i'm sure you are ready to come home. thank you, vaughan. let's get a check on your weather with meteorologist bill kierans. bill, we're looking at the santa ana winds, obviously, california is facing severe wildfires. what can you tell us about the conditions? >> today can be as dangerous, even ased be as when the thomas fire broke out. we are expecting wind gusts, low humidity. it's a dangerous day for the residents there and firefighters. this is some of the pictures

from yesterday. this is the skirball fire. it's incredibility. the highway remained opened. they were worried about the getty center and getty museum, which is on the right side of the highway t. fire was on the left side of the highway. so again, this was a smaller blaze, it was only about 150 acres, it was rye right by the highway, it was extremely close getting into the highly populated area of youp town los angeles. a lot of people are asking why did this happen? didn't we have the record rains last winter? we did. this is an image from outer space. the green shows you the vegetation. we were happy to get the rain and snow last winter. we went through the five hottest months on record. everything begins to brown up. what was green is now brown. so that's the vegetation that died off. that's the fuel for these fires, some of these areas haven't

burned in decades, so you have additional fuel to burn. that's one of the reasons the fires have been spreading so fast. so they're we're in the raney season, they've had less than 5% of the average rainfall, which leads us into today and the fire outlook. it's extreme and to have it going all the way from the u.s.-mexico border back up outside of san diego through the mountains near riverside, los angeles, almost to santa barbara, it's extremely rare to have it that large. the strongest winds with our santa ana event are beginning to kick up. they had reports of 75 mime per hour winds. as we go through the morning the peak winds will be 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.. we have the fires out there now. there are about five of them. those could flare up. if new fires form, they call them spot fires from the embers of the fire. >> that itself the concern today. the other problem is, of course the rainfall. they need rain, this is

citizens from traveling outside of amman and children not to attend school today. more than half the members of the council have called for a meeting, possibly this friday t. state department issued a world wide caution. partly in anticipation of possible violence and security threats and a cable was september to all diplomatic posts, strucking officials to defer non-essential travel to israel, jerusalem and the west bank until december 20th. joining me once again on the phone my colleague ayman mohyeldin. the question i asked earlier on the show, sadly, we used you sort of the juxtaposition in jerusalem yesterday to what you are seeing now in ramallah? >> we are seeing that sense of frustration and protest that we were describing and anticipating yesterday actually materialize today. we can tell you from where we

have been during the course in the early morning a nationwide protest has been organized, starting from ramallah, these are protests that are supposed to take place in every city and town across the occupied west bank. there are marches taking place as well. there was a general strike called for, labor unions, shop keepers here have boarded up their stores and really the mood stood one of frustration and anger a. lot of disappointment in the united states. we are hearing that very much in the comments by the speakers on the stage, denouncing the u.s. president, calling on the authority to withdraw its recognition of israel effectively ending the peace process, many vowing they will continued their struggle until jerusalem is liberated. so from their perfect e specttive, the anything -- perspective, the israeli officials monitoring the situation are taking the situation seriously.

they've said they've beefed up their resources in the west bank, deploying more spell jens, it's a wait and see game to see how large the crowds are in today's protest. but there is no doubt as the different scene than yesterday where i think most of the people we were talking to were many shock following the decision. >> amayman, we know the preside did speak with mahmoud abbas, the leader of the palestinian thunderstorm. as we know ga za not necessarily under the umbrella of abbas. >> reporter: that's correct. that's a part of the liberation order technically. they are a part of the national unity government. there has been an attempt to form a reconciliation between the palestinian factions, including hamas that at one point controlled the ga za strip outright t. palestinian prime minister has recently been in ga za. they have been holding talks t. rhetoric coming out, including

the former prime minister and leader of hamas has been very strong and very much in the same light of what we have been hearing from all palestinian factions. strong condemnation against the occupation, calling on palestinians to even take eight step further and launch the third uprising in wak of this recognition, the rhetoric is a bit more sharp and heated. no doubt it reflects the same type of anger among palestinians. interesting, one of the points that came out from the chief palestinian negotiator. this is an individual who dealt with the u.s. for a long, long timing, dealt with the israelis, he come out and said the two-state process is effectively over. it's time for a one-state solution with equal rights for all palestinians and israelis living between the river and the sea. it gives you a sense of how dramatic it has been from the palestinian perspective. >> an unbelievable see change for that for sure.

ayman, we will be checking back in with you in a little bit. thank you. shifts is that its to a growing emergency in southern california as crews race to contain at least five wildfires burning right now a. part of interstate 405 in los angeles, one of the busiest freeways had to be shut down yesterday as flames burned alongside the roadway. wildfires in the los angeles area have burned more than 100,000 acres since tuesday t. threat continues today. officials say wind gusts could reach up to 80 miles per hour. hundreds of homes across southern california have been destroyed and authorities are urging people to take those evacuation orders seriously. joining me now from ventura, california, a special correspondent for nbc news scott cohen. you see these images, they're stunning, you see building, homes, reduced to rubble. what more can you tell us? how bad are the conditions going to get?

>> well, that >>. >> reporter: well, that's the key. in what is now expected to be according to forecasters the worst week-long santa ana event with winds kicking up. we have been feeling it the last couple of hours the wednesday continuing to pick up speed. as they do that, particular at the higher elevations you get those 80-mile-an-hour wind gusts and those scenes of devastation we have seen throughout southern california over the last couple of days and fires that really blew up so quickly. this particular fire where i am, the thomas fire in ventura county went from basically in ug to 90,000 acres in the space of about 36 hours. you saw what they call the skirball fire the one along the 405 freeway. they had that shut down part of the morning yesterday. it blew umm very quickly before they could really implement some of the things that they wanted to do to keep motorists away from that. and so we're looking at

potentially worse conditions now as far as the winds are concerned than when these fires got started and these santa ana winds are expected to continue at least through tomorrow. >> scott, you mentioned the speed at which this all happened is stunning. we're seeing images of space of california actually burning. it's crazy to see, scott, we appreciate your reporting, look at that it's unreal. thanks, so much. >> unbelievable. all right, senator al franken is set to hold a press conference today amid the growing calls by his democratic colleagues to resign following the latest accusation of sexual misconduct against him. a former democratic congressional aide is now the seventh woman to accuse franken of sexual misconduct. she told politico he tried to forcibly kiss her in 2006, two years before he actually became a senator t. unnamed woman says frank enthen told her quote it's my right as an entertainer.

he denied the accusation. at least 35 senate democrats are calling on him to quit. for jigillibrand wrote quote enough is enough. she added -- her post was followed by other female senators. by yesterday afternoon, a number of male democratic senators and democratic national committee chairman tom perez joined their female colleagues in that call. senate minority leader chuck schumer added his name saying he personally called franken yesterday morning around had a meeting with the senator and his wife in the afternoon urging him to step aside.

there are a number of reports suggesting franken will announce he is, in fact, resigning during his press conference today. his office wrote, in part, any reports of a final decision are inaccurate. in the wak of former congressman john conyers' call for his son to succeed him. new details emerged the young conyers was arrested earlier this year. john conyers iii was arrested in february on decision i suspicion of domestic violence against his girlfriend. she suffered knife cuts during an argument. conyers tells the "new york times" the two had an argument that escalated and the woman pulled a knife on him and she cut herself as they struggled. documents show the los angeles district attorney's office cited a lack of independent witnesses and concluded it could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the victim's incident was

sustained. the former girlfriend got a restraining order against him, aiming he is quote regretful for any part i played in escalating the altercation. steve bannon and mitch mcconnell's war of words continuing, bannon took aim at mitt romney in a tuesday night stump speech for roy moore. yesterday mcconnell hit being at bannon's comments. . >> all right. meanwhile, a number of republican versus defended romney, including utah senators

the town of coleman. he's ratcheting up the rhetoric in this case. he says he particularly thinks alabama shows the country their moral compass is dead on. speaking about the movements of women speaking up and standing up. because i think there is a distinction when you are noted. when you talk about john condition years and al franken, right. it's their colleagues over in congress that have called on them to step down. meanwhile, in alabama the voters of alabama all well knowing the accusations of these nine women may very well step forward next tuesday and vote for roy moore to put him in congress. so when it comes down to the voters' voice, those voters may well put roy moore into public office despite those allegations, i should note, when you are talking to voters, there are plenty that keep telling me over and over, there will be a game time decision, which makes me very hesitant, as unsexy as it is on my end to not have a prediction to get a good grasp of where this race will go come

got. it's 90,000 acres t. creek fire is 15,000 t. rye fire 18,000, the thomas fire dwarfs all of them this is a night-time picture. obviously the bright lights the light pollution here. this is the santa barbara area. watch what happens in here. this is where ventura is located in san paolo. this is monday morning. this is tuesday morning. this is the light emitted from all those flames, just to show you how huge that fire was and how quickly it did burn. that's why this fire is still threatening ojai, the city, itself, still safe. a lot of the people have been ordered and evacuated. that's one of the cities we have to watch today. the winds will be in the 45 to 60-mile-per-hour range and at 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. local

time. we have six hours until they hit these peak winds. then we'll see what the fires do. this morning, it's snowing in west texas. it's actually snowing outside of san antonio this morning. so i forwarded this to 5:00 p.m. cold rain along the gulf coast. those of you in the southeast, from louisiana, southern mississippi, this is snow tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. maybe even atlanta, montgomery, again it doesn't look to be a huge ordeal the possibility of the bridges and overpasses getting covered. here's the snow forecast. one inch outside atlanta, down through southern portions of mississippi and louisiana. maybe even baton rouge, it hasn't snowed yet in pittsburgh. we will be talking about the chances of snow in the deep south. >> still ahead, we will go pack live from jerusalem for more on the noble fallout recognizing israel's capital. one top democrat alleges michael

these disagreements, we will arrive at a peace and a place far greater in understanding and cooperation. >> all right. president trump there making a very controversial announcement. my colleague joining me from ramallah in the west bank. global condemnation of this decision, really, ayman, except, of course, for benjamin netanyahu then we have friday prayers tomorrow. how is the region preparing for all of this and also to keep this ting from getting out of hands, getting out of control? >> reporter: yeah, i think there is two components the long-term and the short-term component. we are seeing the short-term reaction, protest itself, ramglys, marches, we seen a general strike called for by palestinian members of society. business sector. so there is obviously a lot of frustration and anger.

the real question going forward is going to be what is the palestinian authority, do arab countries what do they do going forward? we are interested hearing varies political factions that has moved this discussion in a slightly different direction. for example, are you hearing the chief palestinian negotiator, from the palestinian prime minister saying that the u.s. is no longer a impartial negotiator and broker. that's a stark contrast to hear that from palestinian officials, themselves, who have always been whetted to the two-state solution negotiated by the united states. i think yesterday's announcement is marking some a new conflict managed going forward. whether or not that materializes remains to be seen. >> interesting enough, it's not just in israel, where the u.s. is no longer seen as someone who is the negotiator for all these
