good morning, everyone. it's thursday. december 28. i'm ayman mohyeldin. alongside louis burgdorf. begin with a new report claims president trump's legal team is preparing a pointed response if former national security adviser michael flynn accuses of any wrongdoing. three unnamed sources tell "the washington post" that trump attorneys are ready to attack flynn's credibility. focusing on guilty plea for lying to the fbi. he said it himself. he's a liar. said one person helping crack the strategy. the approach would mark a sharp break from the earlier forgiving posture towards flynn. >> michael flynn, general flynn is a wonderful man. i think he's been treated unfairly by the media. i think it's very unfair what happened to general flynn t way he was treated, and the documents and papers that were

michael flynn. >> i don't want to talk about pardons for michael flynn yet. we'll see what happens. let's see. i can say that, when you look at what's gone on with the fbi and justice department, people are very, very angry. >> and we're also following a new report from news on special counsel investigation. michael reports according to two sources, mueller's investigators are begun questioning rnc staffers about the party's digital operation that worked with the trump company to target voters in key swing states. whether the joint effort was linked to the work of russian trolls and bottoms that influenced voters during the 2016 election. this could be a potentially ominous sign for the son-in-law jared kushner who managed the trump campaign digital operations. after winning, told forbes, quote, i called somebody who works for the technology company i worked with and had them give me tutorial on facebook micro

house republicans are trying to stein the intelligence committee into the probe and 2016 election. there are some more establishment and moderate republicans who disagree and say look, mueller has a phenomenal record. not doing anything wrong. support him and continue to do so. >> are you hearing at all any republicans express reservations about this particular strategy and it could backfire against the president. trying to go against particular individuals like michael flynn according to new reporting. is there any chance this could backfire given the fact we don't know what michael flynn is actually going to say to the investigators. >> absolutely. that right there is the million $question. no idea what information michael flynn may have. no idea at this point in time what he may have already told robert mueller. in this particular instance with michael flynn, the words could come back to haunt him just like the litany of clips you played earlier. there have is no shortage of

sound bites from president trump. and he is of course the closest person to the white house who has been wrapped up new mueller's probe. this is really nothing new that we've seen from this white house. when flynn was first -- when the guilty plea first rolled out. we saw ty cobb come out and say this guy was an obama appointee. they've been trying to put distance between the president and michael flynn. >> and the dwetweet where the president tweeted out he fired flynn for lying to the fbi which turned out to not be the words of the president. melissa, we're going to check back with you later on in the program. while spending time this week at florida club. made unannounced stop at west palm beach fire house yesterday. spoke to first responders and repeated debunk claim about his record. >> had a lot of legislation pass. saying that if we got this one done, we would have succeeded

state rex tillerson has a piece in the "new york times." year end recap of sorts promoting trump's policy vision and detailing views on where things stand in the world today. touches on the strategies aimed at north korea and iran and victories made in isis. also discussing north korea. discusses china's role writing they have applied certain bans and sanctions. they should do more. other areas of relationship including trade imbalances, intellectual theft and south china sea and elsewhere. china's rise as economic and military power requires washington and beijing to consider carefully how to manage our relationship for the next 50 years. tillerson also discussed relations with russia, writing we have no illusions about the regime we're dealing with. the united states has a poor relationship with a resurgent

put forward a bill ha is going to garner support from all republicans in the senate. those challenges just don't apply to paul ryan in the house. this is something that he has long said that he wants to accomplish in his career. >> speaking of paul ryan and his career, do you think that rumors of him stepping down may actually limit his antibiotic to get things done on the hill. he said he's not going anywhere. it's certainly been a lot of speculation that's been fuelled over the last couple of weeks about him possibly stepping down after 2018. >> i don't think so. as you said, paul ryan has vehemently denied the rumors. he has a big backer in his corner. and that is president trump who said a few weeks ago that he was really disappoint instead the rumors that paul ryan could potentially leave at the end of this congress. really encouraged him to stay and said they have developed a very strong relationship and obviously that is not something the president would endorse. on the other hand, paul ryan does have a very lengthy

legislative agenda. we'll see what will happen in the senate. they need to take action on daca. i don't think having the president in his corner is really going to impact his ability to get things done. regardless of the rumors that may be swirling out there. >> you just listed a few of the big issues of 2018 possibly as 2017 shutstown. what are the big political stories you're keeping an eye on for the new year. >> definitely the midterm elections. obviously a lot of momentum behind democratso to the midterms. huge gains in the the races in new jersey. doug jones's win in alabama is a huge win for democrats. if democrats do go ahead and gain control of either congress, it will be interesting to see

how that plays out with president trump wanting to accomplish things from his legislative agenda as well. >> interesting to at ing ting t. may give trump a reason to justify why things aren't getting done. melissa quinn, great to have you with us in the mornings. the justice department is reviewing how it handled sexual misconduct claims among employees. the move comes in response to a may report from the department's inspector general that found potential systemic issues in the way the anc handled sexual harassment claims. including 19 allegations made between fiscal years 2012 and 2016. inspector general's findings first reported by "the washington post" highlighted several cases in which supervisors failed to discipline inappropriate behavior and some cases rewarded the alleged perpetrators with bonuses or performance awards although investigations were pending. justice department spokesperson says attorney general rod rosenstein has convened a

let's get a check on the stories in the day ahead. chief white house correspondent, hally jackson has a look at the president's schedule. >> reporter: president trump is waking up in south florida where he has been spending his working holiday vacation. that is coming to a close. in six days from today, you are going to see lawmakers getting back to work in washington, specifically in the senate. they have plenty on their plate from immigration to infrastructure to a budget deal. in the first weekend of january, expect to see top republicans huddling with president trump at camp david to try to figure out
