and this is one we haven't discussed at all in our hour. i just got it. the president had his physical at walter reed and question tell you the military doctor who oversees the exam said it went exceptally well and the president is in excellent health. more details will be released after the weekend on tuesday. that does it for "the beat". i'll be back here monday night at 6:00 p.m. eastern. "hardball" starts now. >> let's play "hardball." good evening i'm chris matthews in washington one day after yesterday's now infamous oval office meeting, president trump's expletive of choice is reverberating around the world. as "the washington post" was the first to report, the president
4:01 pm
said, why are we having all these people from s-hole countries come here. speaking of immigrants from haiti, the president said reportedly, why do we need more haitians, take them out. the president is unrepet event. the this morning he issued a statement on twitter saying the language used by me was tough but not the language used. the president disputed part if not all of what he reportedly said, never said anything derogatory about haitians other than haiti is obviously a poor and troubled country. everyone said them them out. i have a wonderful relationship with haitians, probably should record future meetings. among the lawmakers in yesterday's meeting. dick durbin was the first to say he did use that language, not
4:02 pm
once but repeatedly. >> he said, haitians, do we need more haitians, and then he went on and he started to describe the immigration from africa that was being protected in this bipartisan measure. that's what he used these vile and vulgar comments calling the nations they come from shitholes. not just once but repeatedly. i think back to presidents throughout history and cannot imagine a moment where a president sunk to that depth. that's what breaks my heart. >> that's a good man. anyway, responding tom cotton and david purdue said we do not recall the president saying these comments specifically. i love the we do not recall. however, south carolina's post reports that senator lindsey
4:03 pm
grandma confirmed the comments, saying the comments were basically accurate. graham who stood up to the president yesterday said all those attending the meeting know what i said and how i feel. it was against this backdrop we witness a contrast at the white house. where they honored dr. martin luther king at the white house. when given the opportunity to apology for his comments, he remained silent. >> will you give an apology for the statement yesterday? are you a ray cyst? will you respond to the serious questions about this statement, sir? we are talking to the president. mr. president, are you a racist? >> that was april ryan making that request.
4:04 pm
hosti joining me is joy reed, and a poll cyst at the "the washington post," and eli stoker. he has no politics, just an analyst here. let's start with joy. i love you on friday because then everybody knows you're on the weekend. the word, i don't know why we don't say it, it's sort of our deal here at nbc and m nbc. it's how he sees countries where people are black. >> yeah where my parents came from. i was on text, e-mail and phone with several haitian friends who were infuriated. when you think about the efforts they have made to contribute to
4:05 pm
this country, to creating the culture of new orleans, fighting in the civil war, they fought in word war ii and then if you go to africans. this country was built by the back breaking free labor of africans. the house he lives in was built by african hands who got nothing in return. and african-americans have asked this president for basic respect, he hasn't given it. as a child of immigrants myself i was disgusted by his comments but i'm more repulsed by people like lindsey grandham who can't come out and condemn him. how shameful, they sit around and listen to this and don't have the courage to do what dick durbin did. shame on lindsey graham. >> in this history lesson we are
4:06 pm
reminded of. most of us come from grandparents from other parts of europe. the african-americans you meet on the street have been here for hundreds of years before us. that's just a fact. also by the way add to one more iconic reality, i think it was the lady of freedom on the top of the capital building was put there by slaves. your thoughts? >> i do agree with joy. the most shameful thing, we have accepted and we know this president is a racist and to quote his own staff, a dope, is the behavior of the republicans. to have mr. cotton and mr. perdue jointly say we have no memory of this. how cowardly is this. you either remember something like that or you're going to cover for him. they know it's wrong, won't say
4:07 pm
it and have the cguts to keep their mouth shut. >> durbin said he used that term a lot. >> how do you forget that? >> i would hear it. eli, you have to be the anchor person on this conversation. i don't know what you can add. >> i don't know what you can say. i was in the room today when the president was reading from a piece of paper the remarks about mlk, and ignoring the shouted questions at the end. to sit there and know this is a comment he made yesterday, a racist comment and to see him there today extolling the virtues of martin luther king -- >> how would you like to be ben carson, whatever you think of his politics he's a good guy. but he has to play the part as an african-american cabinet member. >> he doesn't. he can leave. that's what bothers me -- >> you mean quit. >> yes. not a single person walks out the door and says no this is a
4:08 pm
bridge too far. what is the matter with these people? >> there's a behavior by all republicans that goes beyond any of these moral questions. they march in line like north korean infantry men, they just do. let's get back to that, joy, why do republicans say yes, sir every time trump says do this? >> i don't know. there are different ways to look at it, i agree with jennifer, ben carson does not need to be there. he has a career and reputation distinct from donald trump. donald trump disparaged him during the campaign and now he's as supine as the rest of them. and the rest of the african-americans, trump's friends, darryl scott entering on his behave, they're grubbing for position and looking for something for themselves. none of them have any credit with the black community -- >> you don't know their motive. >> they're there. they're decorative. >> they call them the worst kind
4:09 pm
of -- >> they're there. they're decorative. people in a co-equal branch of government who represent states why do they feel they have to bow down to this president? >> not that these are the only two options, but the republican party doesn't behave like that. as i mentioned, some of trump's allies found ways to defend the remarks. the senator running in ohio said many share his beliefs. >> he lamented about the immigration program in front of him, what's your reaction to that? >> i said all along, the president many times said what people are thinking. i learned as a business guy you have to be careful what you say. i always say judge the president after four years. let's judge the president after what he eve done, not what he
4:10 pm
says. >> what do you think of that in ohio, eli? is that going to sell with republican suburban items? >> no. this is what we've seen since the inception of the trump presidency. none of this is new. the language was shocking yesterday but none of this is surprising. this is who donald trump has been and shown himself to be over decades in this country. he was elected largely by a movement fuelled by his unsubtle brand -- >> he seems to accept norwegians are okay. >> and white southern evangelicals who are continuing to applaud him. talk about shameful, these are people who are religious leaders saying it's appropriate? >> that takes away any fig leaf the white house could use to say he didn't mean racist. when you're saying we don't want people from those countries, black and brown, but we'll take
4:11 pm
it from norway where the white people are. and the white house didn't push back. >> it reminds me of the "saturday night live" skit. meanwhile, house speaker paul ryan called the president's remarks unfortunate. let's watch. >> i read those comments later last night, so the first thing that came to my mind was very unfortunate, unhelpful. we've got great friends from african in jansville who are doctors, incredible citizens. i think it's important that we celebrate that. >> senator john mccain, respect for the god given dignity of every human being no matter their race, ethnicity or other circumstances of their birth is the essence of american patriotism. our immigration policy should reflect that truth and our elected officials, including our
4:12 pm
president, should respect it. jennifer? >> you know, how pathetic is paul ryan, how far he has fallen. he says it's unfortunate. it's unfortunate when i get a run in my stockings. this is not unfortunate. it's outrageous. this is a man who has been proimmigration his life. >> let me go to joy on this. i think everything paul ryan hears or thinks has to do with his agenda. it's not personal. it's the objectivist goals he has. less taxes, less entitlement programs. that's his goal in life. anything that advances it is fortunate. anything that doesn't is unfortunate. he doesn't care about these issues of how we should talk as american. >> there's been a more single minded politician than paul ryan. he wants to repeal the great
4:13 pm
associate, new deal, he wants that gone. it's one of the darkest chapters in the trump era is paul ryan revealing himself. the other person you played on fox news said is true in a sense because donald trump was elected -- if you go back and look at the data on the election of donald trump racial grievance was a driver of getting across the finish line. he played to people who have what they call economic anxiety but he supplied them a job to their pain, if you're losing your jobs it's not because your employer is greedy, it's because of brown people. you should feel good about blaming measuxicans for your wo. and any republican looking to get re-elected understands that racial grievance is a big part driving republican voters, at least that voted for trump.
4:14 pm
>> it's like the lbj quote, if you want to get the white people, just tell them they're better than the worse of the black people. and also voting for rich people as they basically take their money. the president has a history of these types of remarks, i've been saying it since we heard of trump for president candidate. >> trump comes along and says, birth certificate. whether or not that was a real certificate, because a lot of people question it, i question it. they're bringing drugs, crimes, they're rapist. >> we're building a wall between here and mexico. >> donald j. trump is calling for a complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states. >> his wife, if you look at his wife she was standing there, had nothing to say, maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. >> we have a representative in
4:15 pm
congress who they say was here a long time ago, they call her pocahontas. >> look at my african-american over here. are you the greatest? >> i don't know anything about david duke, okay. i don't know what you ooefr talking about with white supremacists or white supremacy. you wouldn't want me to condemn a group i know nothing about. >> but you also have people that were very fine people on both sides. >> this wasn't the first time the president showed such disdain to the country of haiti. the "new york times" reported in december he said haitian immigrants all have aids. the white house denied it. joy, this weekend i think the story has legs i expect you'll get to it tomorrow with "a.m. joy." >> absolutely. i think the big question is in a sense for democrats. how do they continue to sit across the table from this man.
4:16 pm
the question was asked when hoe hired steve bannon, why democrats would sit across the table from him them or after charlottesville, so the question is whether or not there can be good faith notiegotiations with such a person. with stephen miller and the attorney general whispering in his ear. i think democrats need to make a gut check, is it worth sitting around the table with this man -- >> i'm betting republicans to be rubbl republican. >> they'll fall in line like you said, the north korean infantry. >> thank you all. coming up, what is the rest of the world hearing in trump's language on countries he doesn't
4:17 pm
like. we're going to get a lot of reactions from around the world it's coming. we're going to talk to the former ambassador to south africa. plus the other obsession trump can't quit, blaming president obama. is it because he's black? he blames him for everything. this time trump said obama is the reason trump isn't going to london now. figure that out. but once again trump didn't have the facts straight. if this is the week he looked to dispel all the charges from michael wolff's book, didn't he dispel that this is "hardball" where the action is.

>> chris, thank you for having me on. you had me on eight years ago after the devastating eith r earthquake in haiti. and at that time we saw the heart of who americans are. this moment does not reflect that, but it ises a stounding. as you know, i am haitian american, my parents are from haiti. i was born in the congo and i have a long career of service to -- and partnership with people on the continent. so this is personal, it strikes right at home, and when one considers that on this day, 200,000 haitians lost their lives and we're fortunate and blessed to have the partnership of the united states where they could come, seek opportunity and restore themselves to mark that anniversary and dr. king's holiday with these reprehenceable remarks from donald trump is beyond the pail. not surprising from him, but i'm

assume that african immigrants won't help the united states economically. but immigrants were more highly educated. they noticed that more had a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 29% of the foreign-born population. people from africa are more educated than other parts of the world. nigerians are the most highly educated with 57% of those two countries having at least a bachelor's degree. let's talk up africa. the anc in south africa, who had a couple bad leaders, looks like they have a great one now. tell me, give us some good news about south africa if you can. >> i'll give you good news about the region. it has the fastest growing economies in the world.

these are rich, deep partnerships, these are vital cultures and these are people who when they come to the united states make a contribution that's over and above what we could possibly hope to obtain. so leaders in the u.s. right now, republicans who are hearing these comments and not speaking from a place of outrage need to understand that our economic progress in the future, our security in the future are dependent on these people in south africa, nigeria and haiti. >> for everyone listening, i want-to-you to say that's my voice of america. he speaks for our country, the country we love. thank you for coming on. up next, president trump cancels his upcoming trip to london and blames president obama. you figure. once again he has his facts screwed up and showed a need to
