his intellect, with his insecurities sitting there with the elite? i mean, the whole country is going to be embarrassed. >> you and i should go. >> i'll take you up on that. >> it's a date. >> my thanks to my guests. i'm nicolle wallace, i'll see you back here monday for "deadline white house" at 4:00 p.m. in a hole, let's play hardball. good evening i'm chris matthews in washington one day after yesterday's now infamous oval office meeting, president trump's expletive of choice is reverberating around the world. as "the washington post" was the first to report, the president said, why are we having all these people from s-hole countries come here. speaking of immigrants from haiti, the president said
8:01 pm
reportedly, why do we need more haitians, take them out. despite facing white spread international outrage, the president is unrepentant without owning up to his words. this morning he issued a denial saying, the language used by me at the daca meeting was tough, this was not the language used. the president disputed part if not all of what he reportedly said, never said anything derogatory about haitians other than haiti is obviously a poor and troubled country. never said take them out. made up by democrats. i have a wonderful relationship with haitians, probably should record future meetings. unfortunately, no trust. among the lawmakers in yesterday's meeting. dick durbin of illinois was the first to dispute the president saying, he did use that language, not once, but repeatedly. >> he said, haitians, do we need more haitians, and then he went on and he started to describe
8:02 pm
the immigration from africa that was being protected in this bipartisan measure. that's when he used these vile and vulgar comments, calling the nations they come from shitholes. the exact word used by the president, not once, but repeatedly. i think back to presidents throughout history and cannot imagine a moment where a president sunk to that depth. that's what breaks my heart. >> that's a good man. anyway, responding to durbin's idea of the meeting, tom codden and david purdue said we do not recall the president saying these comments specifically. how do two different brains act in the exact same way. lindsey graham recalled the account to his colleagues. the reported comments were basically accurate.
8:03 pm
graham who stood up to the president in the meeting yesterday said all those attending the meeting know what i said and how i feel. it was against this backdrop we witness a contrast at the white house. where they honored dr. martin luther king at the white house. when given the opportunity to apology for his comments, he remained silent. let's watch his zlins. >> mr. president, will you give an apology for the statement yesterday? mr. president, are you a racist? >> mr. president, did anything -- >> will you respond to these serious questions about this statement, sir? >> no! >> we are talking to the president, not you, sir. mr. president, are you a racist? >> that was april ryan making that request. joining me is joy reed, and a columnist, we should just say columnist, we never say liberal
8:04 pm
columnist. you like conservative, right? >> yeah, i still am. >> and eli zoeker, he has no politics, he's just an analyst here. let's start with joy, i love having you on friday, everyone knows you're on the weekend. the word, i don't know why we don't say it, we say other nasty ones. everyone knows the word now. it's how he sees countries where people come from who are black. >> yeah where my parents came from. i was on text, e-mail and phone with several haitian friends who were infuriated. when you think about the contributions haitians have made to this country from fighting in the revolutionary war, making the louisiana purchase possible. haiti has been inex-trickably bound to american history from
8:05 pm
the beginning of this country. they fought in world war ii, were members of the tuskegee airmen. if you go to africans, my god, this country was built by the backbreaking free labor of africans. the house he lives in was built by african hands who got nothing in return. and african-americans have asked this president for basic respect, he hasn't given it. as a child of immigrants myself i was disgusted by his comments but i'm more repulsed by people like lindsay graham who don't have the guts to come out and condemn trump publicly. how shameful, they sit around and listen to this and don't have the courage to do what dick durbin did. shame on them. shame on lindsey graham telling tim scott, tell us what you told him. shame on him. >> in this history lesson we are reminded of. most of us come from grandparents from other parts of europe.
8:06 pm
the african-americans you meet on the street have been here for hundreds of years before us. that's just a fact. people like michelle obama's family go way back. also by the way, to add one more iconic reality, the lady on top of the freedom building on the capitol was put there by slaves. your thoughts? >> i do agree with joy. the most shameful thing, we have accepted and we know this president is a racist and to quote his own staff, a dope, is the behavior of the republicans. to have mr. cotton and to have mr. purdue jointly say, we have no memory of this. how sniv elling of that, how cowardly is that. you either remember something like that or you're going to cover for him. they know it's wrong, won't say it and have the guts to keep their mouth shut. they have to weigh-in -- >> durbin said he used that term a lot. >> how do you forget that? >> i would hear it. eli, you have to be the anchor
8:07 pm
person on this conversation. i don't know what you can add. >> i don't know what you can say. i was in the room today when the president was reading from a piece of paper the remarks about mlk, and ignoring the shouted questions at the end. it was another surreal moment in this presidency to sit there and know the context, to know that this is a comment that he made yesterday, an incendiary racist comment and to see him there today ex-tolling the virtues of martin luther king. it's just staggering. >> how would you like to be ben carson standing there. whatever you think of his politics, he's a good guy. but he has to play the part as an african-american cabinet member. >> he doesn't. he can leave. that's what bothers me -- >> you mean quit. >> yes. not a single person walks out the door and says no this is a bridge too far. what is the matter with these people? >> there's a behavior by all republicans that goes beyond any of these moral questions.
8:08 pm
they seem to be marching in line like north korean infantry men. they just do. let's get back to that, joy, why do republicans say yes, sir every time trump says do this? >> i don't know. there are different ways to look at it, i agree with jennifer, ben carson does not need to be there. he has a career and reputation separate and distinct from donald trump. donald trump disparaged him during the campaign, and now he's just as sniveling and supine as the rest of them. all those people are looking for a position for themselves. none of them have any credibility. they're there, they're decktive. >> they call them the worst kind of -- >> they're there. they're decorative. people in a co-equal branch of government who represent states why do they feel they have to bow down to this president?
8:09 pm
>> not that these are the only two options, but the republican party doesn't behave like that. as i mentioned, some of trump's allies found ways to defend the remarks. the senator running in ohio said many share his beliefs. >> he lamented about the immigration program in front of him, what's your reaction to that? >> i said all along, the president many times said what people are thinking. i learned as a business guy you have to be careful what you say. i always say judge the president after four years. let's judge the president after what he eve done, not what he says. >> what do you think of that in ohio, eli? is that going to sell with republican suburban items? >> no.
8:10 pm
this is what we've seen since the inception of the trump presidency. none of this is new. the language was shocking yesterday but none of this is surprising. this is who donald trump has been and shown himself to be over decades in this country. he was elected largely by a movement fueled by his unsettle brand of -- >> which religion -- he seems to accept norwegians are okay. >> and white southern evangelicals who are continuing to applaud him. and by the way, talk about shameful, these are people who are religious leaders saying this is appropriate language? it's disgusting. >> the norwegian thing is important. it takes away any figge leaf the white house could have used to say he didn't mean that. he's not racist. when you're saying we don't want people from those countries, black and brown, but we'll take it from norway where the white people are. and the white house didn't push back. >> it reminds me of the
8:11 pm
"saturday night live" skit. meanwhile, house speaker paul ryan called the president's remarks unfortunate. let's watch. >> i read those comments later last night, so the first thing that came to my mind was very unfortunate, unhelpful. we've got great friends from africa in jaynesville who are doctors, who are just incredible citizens. i think it's important that we celebrate that. >> senator john mccain, respect for the god given dignity of every human being no matter their race, ethnicity or other circumstances of their birth is the essence of american patriotism. our immigration policy should reflect that truth and our elected officials, including our president, should respect it. jennifer? >> you know, how pathetic is paul ryan, how far he has fallen. he says it's unfortunate.
8:12 pm
it's unfortunate when i get a hang nail, a run in my stockings. this is not unfortunate. it's outrageous. this is a man who has been proimmigration his life. now trying to play it down. >> let me go to joy on this. i think everything paul ryan hears or thinks has to do with his agenda. it's not personal. it's all about this ian rand objectivist goals he has. less taxes, less entitlement programs. that's his goal in life. anything that advances it is fortunate. anything that doesn't is unfortunate. he doesn't care about these issues of how we should talk as american. >> there's been a more single minded politician than paul ryan. he wants to repeal the great associate, new deal, he wants that gone. it is true, he is pathetic. it's one of the darkest chapters in the trump era is paul ryan revealing himself.
8:13 pm
i do have to say what that other person you played on fox news said, is true in a sense. because donald trump was elected. if you go back and look at the data on the election of donald trump, racial grievance was really a driver of getting him across the finish line. he played to people who have what they call economic anxiety but he supplied them a job to their pain, if you're losing your jobs it's not because your employer is greedy, it's because of brown people. you should feel good about blaming mexicans for your whoas. that is a big component of his base. and any republican looking to get re-elected understands that racial grievance is a big part of the driving force behind republican voters, at least that voted for trump. they know that, and they're afraid to anger those people. >> it's like the lbj quote, if you want to get the white people, just tell them they're better than the worse of the black people.
8:14 pm
and also voting for rich people as they basically take their money. the president has a history of these types of remarks, i've been saying it since we heard of trump for president candidate. let's take a look. >> trump comes along and says, birth certificate. he gave a birth certificate. whether or not that was a real certificate, because a lot of people question it, i question it. they're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime. they're rapists. he's a mexican, we're building a wall between here and mexico. >> donald j. trump is calling for a complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states. >> his wife, if you look at his wife she was standing there, had nothing to say, maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. >> we have a representative in congress who they say was here a long time ago, they call her pocahontas. >> look at my african-american over here.
8:15 pm
are you the greatest? >> i don't know anything about david duke, okay. i don't know what you're talking about with white supremacists or white supremacy. you wouldn't want me to condemn a group i know nothing about. >> but you also have people that were very fine people on both sides. >> this wasn't the first time the president showed such disdain to the country of haiti. the "new york times" reported in december he said haitian immigrants all have aids. that's according to one person who attended the meeting. the white house denied it. joy, this weekend i think the story has legs i expect you'll get to it tomorrow with "a.m. joy." >> absolutely. i think the big question is in a sense for democrats. how do they continue to sit across the table from this man. the question was asked when hoe hired steve bannon, why democrats would sit across the
8:16 pm
table from him them or after charlottesville, so the question is whether or not there can be good faith negotiations with such a person. with stephen miller and the attorney general whispering in his ear. and with the attorney generals views whispered in his ear. i think democrats need to make a gut check, is it worth sitting around the table with this kind of a man, given that he's put his racist views on the table. >> i'm betting republicans to be republican. >> they'll fall in line like you said, the north korean infantry. >> thank you all. coming up, what is the rest of the world hearing in trump's language on countries he doesn't like. we're going to get a lot of reactions from around the world it's coming. what are we hearing in africa, for example. we're going to talk to the former ambassador to south

africa. who is of haitian ancestry and born in congo. plus the other obsession trump can't quit, blaming president obama. is it because he's black? he blames him for everything. this time trump said obama is the reason trump isn't going to london now. figure that out. but once again trump didn't have the facts straight. if this is the week he looked to dispel all the charges from michael wolff's book, didn't he dispel that this is "hardball" where the action is. ♪ if you wear a denture, you not only want a clean feeling every day, you want your denture to be stain free. did you know there's a specialty cleanser that's gentle enough for everyday use and cleans better than regular toothpaste? try polident cleanser. it has a four in one cleaning system that kills ten times more odor causing bacteria than regular toothpaste, deep cleans where brushing may miss, helps remove tough stains, and maintains the original color of your dentures

the president's vulger comments made headlines across the globe, from el salvador to haiti. the world did not take the president's comments lightly, let's watch. >> ours is not a shithole country nor is any other country. >> we've been a good neighbor, a good friend, a good partner of the united states over the years. >> these are shocking and shameful comments. from the president of the united states. i'm sorry, but there's no other

word one can use than racist. >> the government of botswana said today they have inquired from the u.s. government through the ambassador to collar phi that they're regarded as an s-hole country. considering the the historical reality of how many africans arrived in the u.s. during the slave trade, this flies in the face of all accepted behavior and practice. i'm joined by the former u.s. ambassador of south africa. ambassador, thank you for joining us, because of your background i have to have, i wanted to have you on. i've known you a little bit. tell us about your background and how that sort of educates you to the damage this does. >> well, chris, thank you for having me on. you had me on eight years ago

after the devastating earthquake in hate can i. and at that time we saw the heart of who americans are. this moment does not reflect that. but it is absolutely astounding. chris, as you know, i am a haitian-american, my parents are from haiti. i was born in the congo and i have a long career of service to -- and partnership with people on the continent. so this is personal, it strikes right at home, and when one considers that on this day, 200,000 haitians lost their lives and we're fortunate and blessed to have the partnership of the united states where they could come, seek opportunity and restore themselves to mark that anniversary and dr. king's holiday with these reprehensible remarks from donald trump is beyond the pale. not surprising from him, but i'm astounded to see the lack of fierce rebuttal from republicans like paul ryan. >> i was lucky to be out of the

to explain one outrage after another from the occupant of the oval office. they struggle to do so as we saw with the resignation today of our ambassador to panama. of course, they lean on our founding documents. they lean on a history of openness and inclusion. they lean on the history of irish americans like you who when they first came to the united states were subject to ugly vitreal but who organized themselves, voted and became full participants at the table of democracy and made remarkable contributions. so to lean on that history and help those overseas understand that our better angels will continue to govern immigration policy, trade policy and security partnership. >> it's become a tougher argument for all of us. president trump appeared to assume that african immigrants won't help the united states economically. but sub saharan african

welcome back to "hardball." when the going gets tough for donald trump he lashes out against his favorite target barack obama. amid the fallout over his comments this year, he criticized barack obama. and late last night, after british newspapers reported fears of protests cancelled his visit to london. the president tweeted this after hearing that:
8:33 pm
according to the state department and the u.s. embassy itself it was george w. bush's administration that decided to relocate and build the new embassy in london. it's another incident of president trump attacking his predecessor let's take a look. >> in the last eight year it is past administration has put on more new debt than nearly all of the other presidents combined. >> we've gotten rid of a lot of bad pieces that were signed by president obama. they voted because they believed the lies of president obama. i don't draw red lines. president obama drew a red line and i was the one that made it look a little bit better than it was, but that could have been done a lot sooner. they ask me what about race relations in the united states.
8:34 pm
i have to say they were bad under barack obama. that i can tell you. >> i'm joined by ashley and david. ashley, can you give us a sense from people hearing about this now, trump saying i decided not to go to london not because of the bad press, because they don't want me, but because i don't like the relocation of the u.s. embassy. how's that square with the chronology? >> squares with a pattern that president trump demonstrated previously, which is he does not like to be publically humiliated or insulted or wounded. so he will sort of pre-empt something bad or embarrassing by making an announcement like this on twitter. as you know, of course, it was not president obama who actually moved the low case of the
8:35 pm
embassy, which was president george w. bush who made that decision in 2008. and it was moved for security reasons. so he's incorrect to attribute that to president obama. but it does seem like him sort of pre-empting what could have been an uncomfortable visit for him to london. >> you know, david, it seems to me you and i have been watching this, the europeans don't like this guy -- most of the world doesn't like donald trump. >> yes. >> i was, as i said, in south america recently, they don't like him because they think he has a race problem, does look down on people of color, and most of the world i've been around is people of color. and british people don't like him because of his manner i think and his language. >> he's vulgar. but most americans aren't liking him as well. >> what about his excuse? >> he doesn't have an excuse. this is a guy who has a long history of racial controversies,
8:36 pm
if you want to be polite about it. you and i spent many years and very confrontational when he was a birther. i don't think there's any way to the see it without having some racial aspect to it. it was the first african-american president, and he kept claiming, there when there was no evidence, that he didn't belong there, and yet mitt romney accepted his endorsement. cpac had him show up. so i think he's been enabled by republicans and the election only taught him that he can get away with saying the worst things. and even paul ryan during the campaign when he was talking about mexicans being rapists and went after an american judge for a mexican heritage. ryan said these are racial issues. yet he succeeds and he's only learned up to now that he can get away with it. >> it seems an old excuse, a

tackling dummy for him, barack obama. let's talk about the embassy. it's in a beautiful part of london, a wonderful leafy neighborhood, who wouldn't want to wander around the neighborhood. but in cases of security they have moved the embassy outside the city to put the bunkers up and the cement up, but isn't that what trump demanded that we should be tougher in putting up our defenses in diplomatic facilities? isn't this what he wanted? >> it was not a decision again -- i think part of the problem again, is this was not a decision that president trump made about the embassy. it was, again, a george w. bush decision, but the president has a lot of frustration about inheriting problems from his predecessors, that's something he's voice repeatedly. while it fits in line with wanting to secure americans abroad, it wasn't his decision. and it seems like a flimsy excuse to get out of a visit to
8:38 pm
london that was not going to be particularly enjoyable for him. >> it's not even a problem. you can -- moving the embassy was judged by security experts that it was necessary. and the embassy is being built, it's not plagued with issues. so he's creating a problem that doesn't exist. so he can blame barack obama. >> it is for the peanut gallery, the far right people that buys anything he gives him. so a friday night they say you know we had a problem with the embassy, no we didn't. the problem is with trump. up next, this was the week president trump was supposed to push back charges he was not fit for the office of president. clearly that plan went out the window a couple days ago. you're watching "hardball." they came out of nowhere, sir! how many of 'em?

yesterday we had a bipartisan meeting with house members and senators on immigration reform. it was a tremendous meeting. actually it was reported as incredibly good. and my performance -- you know, some of it called it a performance. i consider it work. but it got great reviews. >> welcome back. that was president trump basking in the blow of his immigration meeting this past tuesday. for a short time it seemed to disspell charges. trump started the week with that show of deal making on immigration only to reverse course the next day. let's watch. >> i feel having the democrats in with us is absolutely vital. this should be a bipartisan bill.
8:43 pm
it should be a bill of love. we can do that. it also has to be a bill where we're able to secure our border. >> we don't need a 2,000 mile wall. we don't need a wall where you have rivers and mountains and everything else protecting. >> would you be willing to sign an immigration deal that does not include funding for the wall -- >> no. we need the wall for security, for safety. >> on thursday the president complicated matters by ranting to senators about immigrants from s-hole countries being allowed to enter the united states. he also tweeted about a bill and then reversed course two hours later. and then told "the washington post" i probably have a good relationship with kim jong-un. when asked about his tweets you see that a lot with me. and then somebody is my best friend. i'm a very flexible person. what a week.
8:44 pm
let's bring in the hardball roundtable. >> beth, i want to start with you. he seemed like he was on a -- sort of parol this week, prove he's not as nutty as michael wolff portrayed him. >> if you're referring to the bipartisan meeting where he invited cameras in, he's trying to show he can function, run a good meeting, seek input and sound plausible as a president. i found the whole conversation a little bit off. because michael wolff's thesis is not the president is unstable. it's his staff does not believe he's up to the job. and that was bourn out in that meeting. he didn't know anything about what he was discussing on daca. he was willing to take diane feinstein's idea to get a deal it took republicans to step in
8:45 pm
and say no that's not what you want. he also dealt with this as a tv producer. as the cameras were leaving he said, i hope i gave you guys enough material. it's as if he was producing a show about the presidency, rather than doing a job. >> that's how he fixes a problem. he also referred to it as a studio. >> the presidency is a reality tv show for him. that's the way he's taking this all on. he did that as a candidate, he's doing it now as president. the other thing that i would add is that every time they say, that's not me, they say that donald trump is going to turn a corner, right? he's really going to be presidential. days later we see the real donald trump. he can't help himself because he is truly who he is. which is there is no mystery to him. >> do you think he's politically smart? >> no.
8:46 pm
>> why would he say in front of durbin and a bunch of democrats, a lot of them progressives why he use that term, s-hole, i can't say it on television. he gave them what they wanted which is something to use against him to be political about it, right? by the way, how is he going to get a democrat to cut a deal with him on immigration after he made those comments about the people that are involved? >> that's the hardest part. we're in an even numbered year. which means these people have to stand up to voters this year. and the democrats are going to say the last person they want to be seen making a deal with is donald trump. i think when we see him say things like this in a private setting, there is a bit of a thought that he's the president, he can do these things because he's in charge. it's a little bit of a fairy tail version of a presidency. that he had coming into it, that he thinks is okay. >> you have to cover the straight news for us. where does he stand on daca, beth? do we even know?
