together. that's a broadcast for a monday evening, thank you very much for being here with us, good night from our nbc headquarters here in new york. here tonight. good night from our nbc news headquarters here in income. new york. this morning, president trump is blaming a top democrat for a failure to reach a deal on daca. it's one of the sticking points they face with a government shutdown looming. plus, former trump associate steve bannon and corey lewandowski are both expected to face questions. and a house of horror in southern california. police discovered 13 children had been held captive in their home in filthy conditions. good morning, everyone. it's tuesday, january 16th.
2:01 am
we begin with president donald trump who is now blaming senator dick durbin for blowing a possible immigration deal, raising the risk of a government shutdown. yesterday afternoon, the president wrote in another disparaging tweet, senator dicky durbin totally misrepresented what was said at the daca meeting. senator durbin stands by his claims about the president's vulgar and many say racist remarkers during closed door immigration talks last thursday. that's in contrast to the shifting stories from tom cotton and david purdue. friday, they claimed they didn't recall what was said inside that meeting with the president, but by saturday, they outright denied that the president actually made those remarks. >> republican senator lindsay graham is standing by his story telling the post and courier, quote, my memory has not evolved. i said what was said and i know what i said.
2:02 am
graham says he responded to the president's remarks by telling him america is an idea, not a race. here is a senator yesterday imploring the president to get serious and strike a deal. the discourse right now is pretty low. we're producing some good policy. buts those of us in our business need to up their game. it's pretty embarrassing when you have to take your children out of the room just to report the news. so the only thing i can do is control me. the only way you're going to fix the problem in washington is to get a bipartisan solution and i urge the president to lead us to that bipartisan solution. mr. president, close the deal. it's going to take you, mr. president, working with republicans and democrats to get this done. it's not going to be done on twitter by tweeting. it's going to be done by talking and understanding.
2:03 am
>> new reporting from "the washington post" provides more context into why the talks have been so difficult, citing more than a dozen white house officials, capitol hill aides and lawmakers, the paper reports, quote, trump's ping-ponging from deal making to feuding from elation to furry has come to define his combativeness and his willingness to suddenly change his position. a shutdown fight is looming on capitol hill, and there are several sticking points that lawmakers face in their efforts to keep the government open. congress must reach an agreement on a budget plan before midnight on friday before funding is set to run out. democrats argue if republicans want their cooperation on a spending bill, it must include a deal with d.r.e.a.m.ers.
2:04 am
others include spending caps. but they're divided over defense spendinging and nondefense spending. disaster aid, lawmakers disagree on a disaster aid package for texas, florida and other areas hit by hurricanes last year. and then there's health programs. and that includes funding for community health centers and c.h.i. the children's health insurance program. according to "the washington post," aids from key negotiators have both parties are expected to meet the today to rekindle talks they're expected to discuss plans for a stopgap spending measure tonight. an undocumented u.s. immigrant who called the u.s. home for 30 years was deployed yesterday. jorge garcia, accompanied by two immigration and customs enforcement agents said good-bye to his wife and two teenage kids. the detroit free press indicates
2:05 am
garcia was brought to the u.s. by a family member when he was just 10 years old. though facing an order of removal since 2009, he received stays to remain in the u.s. under the obama administration. however, due to the trump administration's crackdown on immigration, garcia was ordered to return to mexico last november. garcia, who has no criminal record and pays his taxes every year is too old to stay in the u.s. under daca. president trump spent martin luther king jr. day at his west palm beach golf club. the white house has not confirmed whether trump was playing golf during his time at the club, but many criticized the visit after trump on friday encouraged americans to spend the day servinging their
2:06 am
communities to honor king's work. trump refrained from tweeting about the day of remembrance. however, he did retweet his weekly address where he spoke about king's legacy. so as the investigation into russian meddling in the 2016 is election continues, several of trump's current and former associates are expected to appear before congress. the house intelligence committee is expected to question white house communications director hope hicks as early as this week. former white house chief strategist steve bannon, he's expected to appear before the same committee in the closed session later today. former trump campaign manager corey lewandowski confirmed over the weekend that he expects to speak to lawmakers this week, as well. >> so the house intelligence committee sent me a letter asking me to voluntarily come in and have a conversation about what i know. what i responded to them was i'll be happy to come in and sit down. i have nothing to hide. i didn't collude or cooperate or coordinate with any russian,
2:07 am
russian agency, russian government or anybody else to try and impact this election. >> in that interview, lewandowski expects to appear thursday or friday of this week. >> sara, good to talk with you this morning. is there any sort of anxiety coming from the white house about what bannon may or may not say? >> well, certainly there may be a bit of anxiety just because steve bannon is a loose cannon at the moment. he's not in touch with anyone in the white house. he is not on good terms with the president and has no incentive at this moment to necessarily protect the president or any white house aides and their interests because they have hung him out to dry following his comments to michael wolff. so bannon's testimony is certainly a potential concern for the white house. but keep in mind that bannon didn't come into the campaign until very late so he wasn't present even though he made some incendiary comments the about that meeting at trump tower in july between donald trump jr. and a lawyer thought to be
2:08 am
connected to the kremlin at the time. bannon wasn't present on the campaign so he wouldn't the necessarily have the kind of knowledge that would potentially lend itself to a bombshell, but he was president in the white house when they were scrambling to come up with some sort of statement to respond to the news of that meeting breaking. so there are certain elements that bannon would be able to speak to with credibility and others where he may not be able to speak to with as much light. >> i want to ask you about president trump the putting the blame for daca on democrats, particularly as he referred to him dicky durbin saying he blew it. is this, in fact, a done deal now that daca has been effectively destroyed or is there still a possibility for a deal to be reached by the end of this week? what are you hearing? >> i think the white house and republicans have been pushing to uncouple daca from the spending talks for a reason and it's to avoid the exact situation they're in right now with a gun to their heads. they don't necessarily have all
2:09 am
the cards in their hands right now. democrats have a little bit of leverage in terms of time because this is a very sympathetic group of people, the so-called d.r.e.a.m.ers protected by daca. republicans have expressed interests in protecting them as well as democrats. they're hard pressed to come up with a deal by the end of the week, but remember that daca doesn't actually expire until march. so republicans have been advocating to uncouple these two policy areas, give themselves more time to negotiate, because clearly right now the error is to polarize with the comments the president made. they're too far apart on a deal to begin with and we're mott just talking about daca, we're talking about chain migration, border security and potentially even funding for the wall. these are all elements that mead to be negotiated with a lot of care. >> yeah. a lot to deal with the shutdown looming just a couple of days away. >> four days to go. >> sara westwood, we're going to talk to you again in a little bit. thank you. >> thank you.

2:36 am
and it runs the risk of repeating some of the mistakes that democrats made in 2016 when they were positioned to take the white house and the senate and they failed to do either because they focused in part so much on their opposition to president trump, then candidate trump, and not enough on what they stood for as a party if impeachment becomes a central focus of the midterms. the democrats do risk falling into that same hole ifto they'r not focusing on their main message. >> let me ask you about how tricky of a spot republicans are findlinging themselves in, particularly those who are running when it comes to distancing themselves from president trump's controversial comments versus trying to celebrate the accomplishments of a tax bill which polls suggest was not very popular with the with american public. >> well, that is a balancing act, so i think that will be fought district by district and state by state. there are some republicans running in districts where president trump remains popular
