resign. according to people told of the matter, "the washington post" went on to say he did not deliver his resignation directly to trump. within the last hour, the president responded to the report as he continues to meet with world leaders in davos, switzerland. take a listen. >> mr. president, why did you want to fire robert mueller? >> fake news, folks, fake news. >> so this after a white house statement from one of the president's lawyers last night who said they declined to comment, quote, out of respect for the office of the special counsel and its process. two sources told "the times" what they saw as three conflicts. first, a dispute years ago over fees at the washington golf club that prompted mueller to resign his membership. >> the president said mueller could not be impartial because he had most recently worked for the law firm that previously
2:01 am
represented the president's son-in-law, jared kushner. finally, he said mueller had returned to fbi director before he was appointed special counsel in may. at the time when trump reportedly ordered the firing, newt gingrich and ddy discussed the conflict. take a listen to this. >> i think what republicans ought to focus on is closing down the independent counsel, because he's not independent. he apparently is very close to comey. we know comey hates trump. you have to assume that that has to leak over to mueller. >> i think he's considering, perhaps, terminating the special counsel. i think he's weighing that option. i think it's pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently. i personally think it would be a very significant mistake, even though i don't think there's a justification. and even though -- i mean, here you have a situation -- >> you don't think there's a justification the for -- >> for a special counsel in this case, but also robert mueller,
2:02 am
there's some real conflicts. he comes from a law firm that represent members of the trump family. he interviewed the day before, a few days before he was appointed special counsel with the president who is looking at him potentially to become the next fbi director. that hasn't been published, but it's true. and i think it would be strange that he would have a confidential conversation and then a few days later become the prosecutor of the person he may be investigating. i think that mueller should have not taken the position if he was under consideration and had a private meeting with the president and was privy, maybe, to some of his thoughts about that investigation or other matters before the bureau. >> and there are reports of friction between president trump and his chief of staff, john kelly. this is according to the "new york times." there are two views, the motivation behind wednesday night's impromptu news conference. officials say trump dropped by
2:03 am
kelly's office just to say hello, but one senior white house official told the times that it was for trump and not kelly to answer their questions on immigration as trump's free wheeling q&a canceled trump's briefing. so last week, kelly called trump not fully informed on his immigration comments during the campaign. >> i want to remind people comey was fired in may so this would have been one month after comey's firing. we saw a few different bipartisan attempts in the senate last year to protect mueller from being fired that didn't really go anywhere. are we seeing renewed calls to find, really, legislative way to protect mueller and his role? and are we finding more support for it now? >> well, i mean, you are seeing a renewed call from democratic senators in particular, richard blumenthal, connecticut, he wants his legislation to move
2:04 am
forward. but i think as you look at the reporting in the "new york times," the key is that this report that the don mcgan reportedly was going to offer his resignation, that speaks volumes. don mcgan has been with donald trump since before jeff sessions, since before anybody was part of the trump team. when you see somebody like that threatening to resign over what this report alleges, that the president was going to fire bob mueller as a special prosecutor, that probably speaks to more of the calls -- or more of the statements by republican members initially in that first two or three months after mueller started the investigation that -- who told me off the record, on the record, that if bob mueller was fired, donald trump would have big problems on capitol hill. >> and molly, let me ask you really quickly to give us a temperature gauge on what this sentiment is within the gop, within the republicans. we've seen some of them stepping up their claims against the fbi.
2:05 am
but how divided is the gop on this issue questioning law enforcement and their institutions? >> well, i think that you'll find the same group of folks who were initially skeptical, to be generous. skeptical of the special prosecutor going forward and investigating these allegations. i think that they're the same people. we've seen special orders that is speeches on the house floor after business is done by a group of conservative lawmakers who think that, you know, the special prosecution shouldn't happen, period. but when it comes down to it, if you look at the problems that the administration -- excuse me, that the fbi is having right now, it really points to -- especially specifically these text messages between peter struck and lisa page, that happened before bob mueller came aboard, in addition to which
2:06 am
there was already an internal investigation going on of how the fbi handled hillary clinton's e-mail investigation. so that was already going on. and, in fact, michael horwitz, the inspector general, is the one who found and discovered these text messages. so i think that there is republicans who are upset with the -- perhaps the nature of what's going on in the fbi, period, but when it comes down to this investigation specifically and bob mueller specifically, i think you're finding it would be the same group that was critical initially is still critical and the folks who are upset about the fbi are not necessarily upset with the special prosecution. >> it sounds like a soap opera, doesn't it? >> isn't it? >> as the investigation turns. >> just a little bit. that's a good one. we're going to talk to you again at the bottom of the hour. thank you. >> thanks. and president trump is set to speak at the world economic forum in davos at 8:00 a.m. eastern time. earlier today, he had a
2:07 am
bilateral meeting with rwanda's president and is set to meet with the president of switzerland, as well. yesterday, trump sought to mend faces and add on to existing ones during had his meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. trump threatened to cut off aid to palestine unless they sat down to discuss peace. trump met with british prime minister theresa may where both expressed their mutual admiration of each other. also yesterday, trump addressed the controversy of his retweeting highly anti-immigrant videos last november telling itv that, quote, if you're telling me they're horrible people, horrible region racist people, i would certainly apologize if you'd like me to do that. he did not offer any formal apology, however. now that we have a glimpse
2:08 am
into what's going on there, joining me now, kelly o'donnell. kelly, what kind of reception has the president received so far? a lot on the agenda today. what should we expect from his upcoming speech there? >> well, good to be with you. the working day is already under way here in davos. the president was asked about his reception here and in a trump-like fashion said the largest crowds that this world economic forum has ever had are in part because of his visit here and the attention he has drawn. the president just concluded an important one-on-one meeting with the newly elected head of the african union. this is important because of the comments the president made with that derogatory language about african nations. the president in this one-on-one meeting with the african union president was very deferential saying what an honor it was to be with him, asking him to extent to the other member
2:09 am
nations his good wishes and it was a kind of deference we don't always see from president trump to another leader in a way where he was trying to emphasize a partnership there. rwanda's president did not address the issue at all. u.s. reporters in the room certainly were trying to get a reaction. that did not happen on camera. s also today, the president was asked about the "new york times" report that the president wanted to pier the special counsel back in june of '17. the president used a phrase he typically uses, fake news, to dismiss that report. in a while he will be talking about america first policies and trade. the white house has released a summary of its proposed plan for immigration reform. it includes a pathway to citizenship for as many as 178 million undocumented immigrants
