2:00 pm
good afternoon, we will start this hour with president trump's controversial comments. he tweeted this. >> after a second white house staffer in three days quitting because of allegations of domestic abuse. the washington post.
2:01 pm
>> all of that follows the resignation of the resig nag of porter. both claiming he was emotionally and physically abusive. >> now, to kelly, is the kelly expressing these men have been falsely accused. >> reporter: he is speaking broughtly. it is easy to draw a connection because he has lost two staffers this week over allegations of domestic abuse, made by their former wives, and revealed in a background check with the fbi, contingent on their employment here. the allegations became public
2:02 pm
through media. it was that public pressure that lead to the resignations, a lot of questions about the management and hamming of this issue in the white house. the president, leaning toward siding with those accused. say there are risks if it they are accused of something if they are not guilty, and the damage that be can caused. he is not specifically saying they are not telling the true. some allegations are true broadly speaking. it is the emphasis we see, siding with the person who is in the spotlight, accused of something, and not taking a position to even speak in general terms about the dangers and the consequences of domestic violence. not speaking out against it he has had opportunities to do that, and opted not to. when he spoke in the oval offense asked about rob porter, he praised the work he did, and
2:03 pm
said he was innocent. both men left their jobs do say they are not guilty of the allegations made by former wives, but did resign their positions under this pressure. democrats say he stirred the conversation over the me too movement and the issue of domestic violence. >> kelly o'donnell at the white house for us. last hour ux in an msnbc exclusive, i spoke to one woman accusi accusing. >> this business of spousal abuse. it is beyond conversation to me. because, it was tolerated in my own family. my cousin's husband abused her.
2:04 pm
my cousin's husband killed her. it is not just the groping that i endured with trump. it is a family experience that i have seen up close and personal. what spousal abuse is all about. again, as i have said before, these are not issues that women forget. these are not issues that they go, that was that. move on. they remember where they were, they remember what they were wearing, every detail of it. the guys, the men, choose not to. anyone if that is psychological, they can departmentalize their brain. what happens at home stay says at home. what happens at work, stays at work. >> potentially, because it is cultly allow and reinforced.
2:05 pm
we are not experts on this. but that could be one of the scenarios here. i wanted to ask you, a note, she said, not once did you hear she, or as part of these conversations, the comments coming from the president. an office many look up to for guidance. >> it is hard to look up to this man as guidance. no, he consistently going back to days when he defended mike tyson. and spousal abuse then. for him, it is his track record. he does not want to address t consider it or believe it. that is how it works. >> the last hour, again, one of the 16 accusers of sexual abuse
2:06 pm
against trump. washington post political columnist david millbank. kimberly, it is that elephant in the room. reported by our own white house krnlt, kelly o'donnell. he has opted not to bring it up, despite the obviousness of the two cases so far. why do you think the president is not addressing the elephant in the room? >> i think that is what we are seeing, in these tweets, right? a couple of things are happening with this sort of christic tweet about porter, the president himself is accused of sexual misconduct. we have seen it demonstrated. he feels almost a brotherhood with these who have been accused of something, as long as they deny t he is willing to defend
2:07 pm
them. we saw it happen with moore, with the horrific allegations against him in his senate run. the president walked away then fully endorsing him again, saying over and over, he denied the aelgds says, you have to believe denials perhaps more than accusations. i think the fact that he is someone who is denying allegations is part of it. i think that he wants to defend the people who arecrose to him. that is part of the roy moore thing, too. he doesn't want to admit someone as close to him in the white house could be doing something so terrible. so, he chooses to believe the men. in a sense, believe the benile opposed to saying anything about the women, despite the fact that we have a photograph of one, rob porter's ex-wife showing horrific abuse.
2:08 pm
every six seconds someone is beaten by a domestic partner in this country. the fact that the president is standing on the opposite side of that is striking. >> the president denying all of the accusations against him, as well as porter and sorrensen. if the alveses were to be true, from those 16 accusers, is he just defending himself? >> i think that kimberly made a point. he likes to be part of this team. he doesn't believe that allegations about rob porter and the other staffer, because he said it is what the allegations against him are not true. i think you are right. >> as you look at the complexion, when we have the issue of the chief of staff, his history related to this issue of gender. then you look at the president moving forward, many thought
2:09 pm
that chief of staff, now, there are fingers pointed at him. >> it is interesting, richard. general kelly has in many ways been a stabilizing force, particularly in terms of foreign policy, military policy, keeping things in order. in this white house. as we see all along, there is no such thing as keeping order in this white house. it now appears at least in this instance, he is contributing to the problem. of course, he has a boss who acts caprishsly. today, talking about due process, the same man who had decided was being judged and juried, and decided his opponent was guilty and needed to be locked up. he would like due process, beyond due process to declare the innocence, if it is somebody that he supports, he is
2:10 pm
innocent. if trump says he is innocent, he is innocent. when you are dealing with a chief executive like that i am not excusing general kelly at all, it is a recipe for chaos at all times. you are seeing that now. are you seeing that with the speech writer, with porter, you are seeing that. you have a lot of people in this white house who are not the usual characters in the republican and conservative establishment. they didn't want anything to do with it. now you have unvetted, folks trouble getting security clearances. >> is there a point to the president's point of due process at all? >> look, this isn't a court. if due process is an issue, it comes up in court. so people who are cop victed have a fair chance to defend themselves. it is different. when someone is coming forward
2:11 pm
with credible evidence of domestic violence, they could not stay in their job. the fact that in this case, you have the photographic evidence like i mentioned, i don't think this is so much an issue of due process, as it is, as i said, the desire to defend people accused of something that they deny. for the president, a denial is all that is necessary for the people within his orbit, that he aligned himself with. he is using the words due process, i am not sure that is what he means here. >> all, thank you for your time today. >> fall out over the president'e decision to block the democrat rebuttable to the russian memo. does he have a double standard when it comes to trance parency.

2:16 pm
>> former u.s. attorney from alabama, and retired fbi special agent. >> joyce, what do you make of what happened? the president had a dlan of today. yesterday, decided to say no, we are not going to release this memo. what is next? >> the president's concerns about the memo and the release of classified information would have been a lot more convincing if he had the same concerns about the last memo, the mechanism for revealing a lot of methods and source information that shouldn't be in the public domain. this classified intelligence gathering process. they don't belong in the public
2:17 pm
domain. once the president allowed some of that information to leak, it mean that is this back end, in the democratic memo will do less damage, there may be compelling public reasoning for letting the public know what is going on here. it is an unfortunate day we live in, when the president of the united states doesn't tamp down on the intelligence function of the justice department. >> as we look at it being politicized, the rebuttable, and the nunez memo, four pages here. when we look at it, bobby, you remember when the original memo was alleging, the fbi am abused fiza, and intelligence in the investigation. what is your response to the democratic response? more data to rebut what was claimed? >> it is impossible to tell.
2:18 pm
i think what happens is, if we were to read this, and look at the nunez memo as a motion to supress, and it was a motion to suppress, and the answer the motion. democrats' answer to the nunez memo may address point by point, they may make additional point that is the danger in this back and forth. once the democratic memo comes out. if it has anything additional, republicans are going to want another memo of their own coming out. a principle stance, stop the silliness, in the interest of our intelligence agency being able to do their job, we won't have any more of this. i am not sure the president agrees with that. >> nunez will now, continue the investigation into potential connections, talk about the question related to this.
2:19 pm
commented on the recent days, the memo initially from nunez was there to really potentially go after rosenstein. now we have rachael brand, now, leaving her number three position. does that concern you? >> it is concerns, rachael brand is the number three person in the justice department by all accounts, a tremendously talented woman, well-liked by the people she worked with. with rachael leaving the justice department there is a lot of uncertainty as to what would happen if rod rosenstein, currently is over seeing the investigation. recuse himself from the investigation, some say he will have to do at some point, because he is a witness. the next person in line to over

see will mueller investigation, would be the solicitor general of the united states. sessions could slide in to rachael's vasant slot. this could be someone from another position, scott pruit at emptit a, shut down the mueller investigation, prohibitting mueller from bringing additional indictments. >> big question mark there. i know you probably agree with that as we look at how politics has been working so far. when we look at the fact that rachael brand is now leaving and going to wal-mart, do you think we are closer to what they are describing? rosenstein recusing himself or
2:21 pm
being let go? >> i home not. the more things like this that happen at the justice department, the through voluntarily or force, we need continuity at the leadership positions in the fbi, and i think that you are right. more change over we get, voluntary or through force, the worse we are going to be. i don't expect and hope that doesn't happen. >> why now? when it comes to rachael brand. we will talk about that next time. when we have more information. thank you both. >> big highs and lows in your retirement account. what is causings you to say, should i pull out my money?
