2:55 am
really convinced people who didn't already agree with him. the public has had a year to internalize their feelings about comey and president trump's decision to fire him. now we're learning to a new poll that his book tour and media tour haven't moved the needle much. >> let's break down the public's view of comey and the president here. we're seeing a split when it comes to sort of the parties between republicans and democrats. talk to us about that. >> right so this breakdown is predictably along partisan lines, 67% of democrats believe comey over trump and 70% of republicans believe trump over comey and people are nearly split over how or who they believe. it's 35% believe comey and 32% believe trump and that's really shows what i was just saying that you know, no matter how much comey is talking about his book or doing interviews about his experiences with the president, that's not changing people's minds and i think he's realizing that if he wants to change people's minds, a book
2:56 am
tour isn't maybe the way to do it. >> i know you kind of highlighted on this a little bit. do we have a sense, i know you're saying that james comey's book and tour didn't do much to change the minds of the american public. but do we have sense of how the book may be performing? is that in any way a measure of the public's appetite to hear the jim comey story? or is there too much saturation of jim comey at this time? >> the book has been selling well and i think that reflects the general palace intrigue. comey's firing was a pretty controversial decision by the president and people are interested in seeing that. the sales of the book is reflected by people's hopes or expectations that he would reveal new things in the book but basically it sort of relitigated everything we knew and one interesting stat from the survey is that 56% of the people we polled think comey's interviews and book tour are mostly for himself and not necessarily to tell truth about trump.
2:57 am
think that's interesting we can sort of use that thinking among people to then apply to other situations like stormy mcdaniels or karen mcdougal, people who are telling their truth about the president. >> let's switch gears here, alexi, i know that axios sat down with chicago's mayor rahm emanual yesterday and he had some advice for democrats heading into the mid terms with regards to what they're saying about the president. how they're acting towards him. what did he say? >> mayor emmanuel told mike allen that democrats shouldn't politicize impeachment. which he i talk to democrats on the hill they definitely understand this. but i think there's a worry that in the anti-trump resistance movement, democratic candidates across the country. especially in more liberal areas, will want to campaign on impeaching trump and mayor emmanuel made the argument that this has legal consequences, it's not something that should be useds a political tool. >> alexi, i want to ask you
2:58 am
about a follow-up on that rahm emanual interview. he also talked about his big ideas for government, including things like modernizing public services. explain that concept for us. >> he argued that government should be able to act like the private sector, in that it should create a system in which you know blasts can go out to the community and there can be a better way for the government to target residents and also for residents to communicate directly with the government. he gave an example to mike allen about how feedback from chicago has showed him that he needs to replace street lights with l.e.d. smart bulbs and so that's one example of government acting like the private sector can lead to beneficial changes for residents in the communities. >> what are we going to be seeing on axios today in. >> ronnie jackson is supposed to have his confirmation hearing that is maybe delayed because of new allegations of improper conduct. i reported last night about a call that senator joe manchin hosted with ronnie jackson and

>> it is. >> you're confident of that number? >> yeah. >> all right so doctor ronny jackson is confident that president trump is in fine physical is shape. account white house say the same for jackson's nomination to be va secretary? new information this morning about the sudden brakes that were put on his confirmation hearing. everything went dark right away. welcome to "morning joe," it's tuesday, april 24th. we have mike barnicle, farmer aide to george w. bush elise jordan. former treasury
