>> mark lives among the lobbing lava bobs. >> what's it like to see that? >> kind of get used to it, but frankly it was a little unnerving. >> you bet ya. a slice of life for those living in a place where the earth has the mantas ked with the time to wrap it up is the man rudy giuliani who said we're going to try the best we can to put the message out there, it has been a year, there's been no evidence of collusion or instruction and it's about time for them to end the investigation. okay. i'm going to try as best i can to put the message out there that if you put a sentence out there we're going to try the best we can to put the mess only out there, nobody should believe the message you're trying to put out there. >> the greatest witch hunt in american history.
2:01 am
we'll take a closer look at how we got to this point. >> and the president claimed during the campaign that he had no business interest in russia but now buzz feed has new reporting that the president was working on plans to build a trump tower moscow while campaigning. >> plus, a royal affair. we're going to go live to england with all the very latest on the festivities ahead of the wedding of prince harry and meghan markle. good morning, everybody. i am ayman mohyeldin alongside yasmin vossoughian and louis burgdorf. we begin with the president and his political team marking the one year anniversary of robert mueller's probe yesterday beginning with a sarcastic tweet saying congratulations to america. we have had the most successful first 17 month administration in u.s. history by far.
2:02 am
sorry to the fake news media and haters but that's the way it is. the trump campaign also sent an e-mail asking for donations, quote, to show the witch hunters that not a single patriot backed down from our fight. while his campaign chairman has entered a plea of not guilty three former aides to the president are cooperating in the probe. here's a year in review put together by the team at deadline white house. >> after serving as the deputy attorney general for 22 days, the deputy rod rosenstein today took himself out of overseeing the russia investigation, turning that over to robert mueller. >> good evening once again from our headquarters in new york. this was day 118 of the trump administration and we now have a special counsel to head the russia investigation. >> the entire thing has been a witch hunt and there is no collusion. >> why do you believe you were fired? >> i think the president at his
2:03 am
word because i was fired because of the russia investigation. >> the president's son now admitting he was promised dirt about hillary clinton last summer before agreeing with a russian lawyer with suspected ties to the kremlin. >> i did not collude with russia, nor do i know of anyone else in the campaign who did so. >> and just the last couple of minutes a spokes person for paul manafort confirming an fbi raid at one of maufrtnafort's homes. >> rick gates indicted on 12 criminal charges. >> minutes after the indictments were announced we learned that a little known campaign aid named george papadopoulus had already pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about efforts to collude with russian representatives. >> ex- national security advisor michael flynn, guess what he's doing today? pleading in the mueller case. >> there's been no collusion. there's been no crime. >> the indictment charges 13
2:04 am
russian nationals and three russian companies for committing federal crimes. >> special counsel robert mueller has obtained another guilty plea. this one from former trump deputy campaign chairman rick gates. >> i'm going to have to interrupt you with breaking news from the justice department. attorney general jeff sessions has just fired andrew mccabe. >> a dutch lawyer became the first person to be sentenced in connection with special counsel robert mueller's probe. alexander got a 30-day sentence and a $20,000 fine. >> the fbi today raided the office of the lawyer to the president of the united states. >> all of this sparked by evidence gathered by special counsel bob mueller. >> there's no reason for the investigation. there never was a good reason for this in the first place. >> what an incredible year. it's hard to make the argument that there is nothing there as sometimes we hear coming out of the white house when you see so many of the president's close associates either charged or
2:05 am
pled guilty. >> and every legal counsel has said this thing is about to get wrapped up at any moment. this is a witch hunt and no signs of it slowing down. more and more is p haing as the days progress. so the former son-in-law of indicted paul manafort has agreed to plead guilty for crimes related to property deals in california. a reuters was first to report that part of a plea deal jeffery will cooperate with government government investigations. details and a sentencing date are not yet known. a real estate developer had done business with his former father-in-law and as the broker of manafort's properties in brooklyn, new york, one of the transactions alleged to involve offshore accounts in the indictment brought by bob mueller. two people familiar with the matter telling reuters that they consider it a possibility that he will be asked to assist with the prosecution of paul manafort. >> a former trump business associate says in new reports
2:06 am
that trump attorney michael cohen pursued a business deal in russia much later than previously acknowledged. he and cohen who was then an executive vice president at the trump organization discussed a trump tower in moscow, russia as late as june. six weeks before the republican national convention, he asked cohen when he and trump would go to moscow. cohen replied in a text message my trip before cleveland, the site of the rnc. once he becomes the nominee after the convention. this contradicts what cohen said in a statement to the senate intelligence committee last september when he referred to the rejection to build a trump tower in moscow. months before the very first primary. there's also this. two fbi agents have now told buzz feed that cohen spoke to multiple russians about trump moscow and that some of these individuals had knowledge of or
2:07 am
actually played a role in 2016 election meddling. >> so the albatross hanging around the company owned by jared kushner's family may fall away soon but the source of relief is raising some eyebrows. the new york times briefed on the deal said that a real estate firm is finalizing an agreement to bail out the 666 fifth avenue building that jared and his father bought years ago for a record $1.8 billion. the real estate arm of the firm is partially owned by the qatari government. the kushner company has been working for years to secure a financing partner for the midtown sky scraper as it faces a repayment of a $1.2 billion debt next year although jared kushner has resigned from the company and divested his interest in the building he
2:08 am
still remains most of his stake in the firm. the deal is also likely to raise ethical concerns as he is the top middle east official within the trump administration. a reminder though, kushner lost his top security clearance over concerns he could be inclufluen by foreign governments through his business dealings. >> and new steps to try and stem the flow of leaks. according to the new york times citing a senior white house official. the white house communications office has cancelled a large daily morning meeting in the wake of the leak of a joke of senator john mccain being close to death by kelly sadler at one of those meetings. instead, the number of people invited to the meeting has been scaled back, but some of the procedures were meant to keep information secure, not to stop the leaks. the times goes on to say that the steps being taken are in response to staff carelessness that has fuelled president trump sense of being undermined.
2:09 am
with the president complaining that he has the biggest team and yet gets the worst press. the paper says that the president has felt increasingly aggravated for not delivering better headlines on some key initiatives like tax cuts or a diplomatic break through with north korea adding that he sees leaks as a cause of distractions that have helped deprive him of those headlines. all right. joining us now white house reporter for the associate press. great to have you with us on this friday morning. i know you and your colleague also have some reporting very fa fascinating on how the white house is responding to those leaks. >> reporter: so right now the president is very upset. he feels like this leak has been a distraction, remember this was the leaked comment that kelly sadler made about john mccain saying his opinion didn't matter because he was quote, dying anyway. but the real focus in the white house has not been over the outrage about that kmen. it's been about trying to figure out and frustration over who
2:10 am
actually leaked it and there is a growing sense of concern and fear among many communications aides in the white house and press aides in the white house who feel like there could be at any moment right now somebody could be accused of being the leaker, somebody could be fired for this. and so they're all kind of on pins and needles right now. >> let's talk about sort of this one-year anniversary of the russia investigation. here's what we've heard from the white house. witch hunt, wrap it up, they have nothing on us, although we are a year into this thing and it seems like as ayman said earlier it's not going oi waway. why repeat this strategy when it seems as if the message is not r resonating. >> reporter: i think your montage there really drove home the point. it's difficult to call this thing a witch hunt when you've got 13 russian nationals who have been charged. numerous members of the trump campaign and former national security advisor who have now
2:11 am
pleaded guilty. all these charges against paul manafort, this drip, drip of additional charges hitting the president's team and those who are close to him. but look, rudy giuliani made clear that he was going to come out fighting on the one-year anniversary. there have been a lot of new charges throwing around including these accusations. they're calling it a potential spy within the trump campaign, potenti potenti potential confidential informant. they're trying to do anything they can to undermine this investigation. >> all right. thank you. president trump attempted to clarify surrounding comments made by john bolton which north korea is now using as one of the reasons why it is threatening to pull out of the upcoming trump/kim summit. >> we have very much in mind the libya model from 2003, 2004, the full complete total disclosure of everything welated to their nuclear weapons program with
2:12 am
full international verification and i think following libya, verification by american and other inspectors is -- could be very important here. >> well, the libyan model isn't a model that we have at all when we're thinking of north korea. in libya we decembssimated that country. there was no deal to keep. the libyan model was a different deal. we never said oh, we're going to give you protection. we're going to give you military strength. we're going to give you all of these things. we went in and dessimated him. if you look at that model, that was a total desz molestation. th -- and i think when john bolton made that statement he was talking about if we're going to be having a problem, so that's the way it went. just the opposite. >> all right.
2:13 am
so as the new york times points out, president trump is actually confusing the 2003 agreement with libya to give up its nuclear program and the 2011 nato backed intervention against the then leader. >> and president trump responded to the controversy sparked on wednesday after he used the word animals to describe dangerous criminals attempting to cross into the u.s. illegally while answering questions about the gang ms 13. >> i'm referring to the ms 13 gangs that are coming in and i was talking about the ms 13 and also -- and if you look a little butt further on in the tape you'll see that. but i'm saying the ms 13, you don't have that where you come from. ms 13, these are animals. they're coming into our country, we're getting them out. they come this again. so when the ms 13, when the other gang members come into our country i referred to them as animals and guess what? i always will. >> still ahead, the avenatti and

law enforcement officials tell nbc news that it's not uncommon for government databases to be restricted especially in criminal investigations. government intelligence agencies can request certain records to be removed or restricted. we should also mention that the leak of cohen's financial documents is under investigation by the treasury department's inspector general. let's switch gears and get a check on your weather with bill karins. bill, the only good news i think out of what you're going to tell us is you and i are wearing the same exact suit. >> that and it's friday. that's the only two good happy news we have to report. the rain is endless right now in the mid-atlantic. the yellow and reds here are imbedded thunderstorms and it is pouring right now from richmond to d.c. over to quantico and heading up towards dover. it cuts off by the time you get to philadelphia. north of there you'll be dry today. 24 million people in this flood watch during the day today and it's already happening. the worst of it is right now it

as to who wore it better. >> "morning joe" is going to tweet out that poll. >> louis has a pocket square. . >> i do. >> mitch mcconnell seems to be getting nervous about his chance in holding the senate. we'll get the latest comments. and president trump lectures nato allies saying that nations that don't pay up will be quote, dealt with. the very latest straight ahead. s are pretty much the same. but while some push high commission investment products, fisher investments avoids them. some advisers have hidden and layered fees. fisher investments never does. and while some advisers are happy to earn commissions from you whether you do well or not, fisher investments fees are structured so we do better when you do better. maybe that's why most of our clients come from other money managers. fisher investments. clearly better money management.

welcome back, everybody. i'm yasmin vossoughian alongside ayman mohyeldin and louis burgdorf. it is the bottom of the hour. let's start with the morning's top stories. a person is in custody after police responded to a call of shots fired at the trump national golf club. that's the course trump has owned since 2012. the police department says it's on its website friday, they are no known victims at this point and there is no further threat. we'll bring you more information as we have it. also president trump's attorney rudy giuliani had a lot more to say about the russia investigation yesterday telling nbc's hallie jackson that after days of no response the special counsel has recently responded to some of their questions with regard to a potential presidential intervie, quote,
2:31 am
they're engaging us on several points where we could reach an agreement. as for details giuliani said quote, that's confidential. the president's lawyer continued to bash the investigation in interviews yesterday saying president trump is owed an apology and that there is nothing else even related to russia election meddling left to uncover. listen to this. >> you've said it should be wrapped up. do you believe that it should be wrapped up overall or just as it pertains in any way to president trump? >> no i think it should be wrapped up completely. i think in fact they should apologize to him for putting him through this and somebody should apologize to the united states of america for putting the country through this. >> and there's new reports that president trump is lining up -- rudy giuliani told the post that trump believes it is time for the justice department to release classified documents about the origin of the russia
2:32 am
probe requested by house intelligence chairman. that are expected to contain details about the confidential source. sources are telling the post th nunes is actively not talking to trump. he's done through donald mcgahn to relay his grievances with the justice department. but mark meadows has been talking to trump in three or more calls a week. people that are familiar with those conversations tell the post and as you can imagine, venting about the doj. now, the president tweeted yesterday that the quote obama fbi spied on his campaign adding if so, this is bigger than water gate and giuliani add this to say. >> this goes back 100 days before the election. they had spies in the trump camp. i'm trying to figure out, you know, who was sitting next to me on the airplane. that's watergate compounded by
2:33 am
the fact that we're many years after watergate and we didn't think this could happen. this is a far worse crime and intrusion on democracy than a non-russian conspiracy. and who's investigating it? i hope that this is turned over for criminal referral and i hope for once the justice department wakes up and investigates something other than, you know, empowering mueller to do an illegitimate investigation. it is illegitimate. >> some pretty strong accusations there from rudy giuliani. back with us white house reporter for the ap. let's start with the mueller investigation. what's the latest that you're hearing from the president's team about a potential meeting with mueller, the latest that we had heard was that the president's counsel had asked to delay the meeting until at least after the meeting with kim jong un. >> reporter: yes, the dynamic appears to be that the president is still interested sitting down
2:34 am
and doing an interview. his attorneys aren't sure that's a good idea but rudy giuliani has been in conversations about the potential terms. what he wants to do is figure out more about what mueller is looking to find out, kind of the scope of questioning, how long that might last, but it appears right now that there is going to be no decision made until the president's potential although it may be on the fence right now meeting with kim jong un scheduled for june 12th and if that does wind up happening then the preparations would start to take place after that. >> let me ask you about some of the new reporting that you have this morning. i think it's about the president trump resurrecting a rule from the reagan era concerning certain clinics. tell us a little more about that. >> reporter: yeah, so we're expecting hhs to announce today a new rule. and what the rule would do is it would change restrictions on funding for abortion clinics under the new regulations, any family planning provider that provides any type of -- provides
2:35 am
abortion services on site and also provides patients with any preferences to abortion clinics would no longer be able to qualify for federal funding. this is a reagan era rule that never went into effect. but it's something that social conservatives have been pushing the president to do. it's also something that's going to open -- this is the third rail of toxic controversial elements that we're going to see that can take center stage as we're getting into the midterm elections. >> all right. thank you. >> and president trump hosted nato secretary general at the white house yesterday. trump returned to his grievance that several nato members are not paying their fair share adding a new threat while singling out one world power in particular. >> we had countries that were not paying what they were supposed to be paying.
2:36 am
now most countries are, not all and i think you'll be able to handle the ones that aren't. i want to thank the seven nato nations in addition to the united states who will meet there, 2% nato spending. we have some that don't and they'll be dealt with. in particular, germany must address its long standing shortfall in defense contributions. germany has not contributed what it should be contributing and it's a very big beneficiary, far bigger than the united states, frankly. >> and make sure not to miss him later on this morning on "morning joe." mitch mcconnell is offering a stern warning to his republican colleagues ahead of the midterm elections. control of the senate is definitely and absolutely in play. in an interview with the washington post he says republicans could lose majorities in the house and the senate marksiing the latest ala
2:37 am
he's sounded about the elections. some examples for reasons to be worried, mcconnell has cited nine battleground states. nevada, tennessee, montana, north dakota, west virginia, florida and arizona. so geographic dispersion all across the country. >> they're using different strategies to light a fire. >> all right. still ahead, the countdown is on with just under 24 hours until the big day for prince harry and meghan markle. we'll go live to england for a preview of tomorrow's royal wedding. >> and bill karins is back. he'll have a check on a very wet weekend forecast for some. so, you guys have recently started dating...

2:42 am
there are the tombs of ten monarchs and it's also where young harry was kristened and where prince charles his father and his wife, camilla had not their service, but they had a prayer after their civil ceremony and prince charles as you mentioned is going to be playing an even bigger role than we expected. it sounds like he's going to be walking meghan markle down the aisle. >> i know that's going to be an important moment for her and the entire family. cal, i see you're dressed up for this occasion. not even a tie for the royal wedding. >> i know. >> i want to ask you something. it's not been without a steady stream of controversy, nonetheless. >> reporter: mayhem is in the air as well as love. three family members. first the half sister she has been the self-appointed spokes person for the circus. she actually claims, get this,
2:43 am
that she was in some kind of a car crash with paparazzi in florida. the authorities down there say they can find no record of it. the half brother of meghan markle wrote a letter to prince harry saying that he was making a big mistake by marrying his half sister saying it would be the biggest mistake in royal wedding history and get this, his son is in town without an invitation to promote his marijuana business. he owns a marijuana farm in oregon. he's developed a marijuana strain called markle sparkle. that is a thing that actually happened this week. quickly to the gambling because gambling is a key part of this. i'm here for the gambling. you could bet on anything you could bet on who was going to walk meghan down the aisle this morning. charms w charles was one of the favorites. you can also bet on the color of the queen's hat. that friend is louis, and you the finally bet on the band that

will play the first song. these are the the tartists who play. hey, listen, stephanie talked about love. i talked about drugs and music so i feel like i've done good work here. i feel like we did good here. yep. >> you know, cal was just talking -- >> cal was talking about some family members who won't be here. there's one more who won't be, but i assure you her presence is felt and that of course is princess diana and people have told us, a lot of her influence harry has said is going to be part of this and we already know that's the case because meghan markle's engagement ridge has three diamonds. two are from princess diana's collection and one is from botswana where he took her for a romantic get away. >> keep an eye on elton john to play that first song.
2:45 am

welcome back. let's turn to business. trade talks would ultimately be successful as the second round of trade talksnurse. cnbc's joumanna bercetche joins us live from london. how have these comments affected the markets? >> yeah. they weighed on equity markets yesterday. into the close we saw dow and s&p close down .2% in trading. there's more encouraging remarks coming out of the chinese foreign ministry this morning. the trade negotiations have been constructive so far and they have been willing to offer an olive branch of some sorts by saying they would be willing to reduce tariffs on sorghum imports. but for one set of trade talks to another, some not so encouraging news on nafta. there are reports now saying that they missed a crucial deadline in terms of presenting the new nafta negotiations, to

lawmakers, which may set it back as far as a year. if you remember, on july 1, we had mexican elections coming up. there may be a change of leadership there. furthermore, u.s. trade representative robert lighthiser said nafta countries are still nowhere near reaching a deal. the supermarket chain kroger has a new online shopping. >> akado is a logistics and distribution channel, uk-based. this was big news in the grocery sector yesterday. kroger had acquired a 5% stake in ocado and will be able to use their technology as well. ocado shares spiked 50%, at one point up 80% in trading. clearly big ambitions. the first time they branch into the united states. they see a big opportunity

it is a, it is a very special day for us here. i'm so excited. joining us here on set with a look at axios a.m., co-founder of axios, jim vandehei. >> i don't think people are paying enough attention to the fact that there's three different areas that could turn into hot waters right now, that right now are cold wars. and internally in the white house, people are worried that they are stretched thin in the trade war with china, north korea taking a turn for the worse and the middle east much more volatile than it was a couple of weeks ago because of our decision on iran. inside the white house, national security council, defense department. more concerned that while a lot of these things seem to be progressing okay right now, they could tush like that. >> and the jerusalem embassy move as well. which one do you think is most
2:57 am
likely to turn from cold to hot? >> the one most unpredictable in the short-term is the middle east. iranians feel like they're under some pressure. they've been doing a lot of mischief in syria. i think that's the most urgent concern. pay attention to china. i know there's a lot of coverage this morning that it looks like the chinese will put a trade deal on the table that will be appealing to trump. but remember, they're not basically talking about a fundamental change in tariffs. what they're talking about is buying more u.s. goods. our economy is cooking with grease. it's not like we have a huge surplus of goods to sell them. that's why you have lighthiser and others saying we need structural changes to slow down china's dominance and put u.s. manufacturers in some point of advantage. that could turn quickly, too. despite what you see to be a lot of happy talk today. >> we've heard that our business reporter that has kept global markets a little bit on edge. what are the chances we see this
2:58 am
escalate to a full-blown trade war? what would that look like if it got to that point? >> we would slap those tariffs and keep those tariffs on china. they would retaliate with tariffs of their own. it becomes sort of a stare-down contest. and we do more retaliatory tariffs. that's how a trade war unfolds. and that would be the fear. the reason right now the markets are assuming that won't happen is because the president very much needs china's help to resolve north korea. the china, he does see this as his great man moment. he think can he find a way to bring some denuclearization to the korean peninsula. even though a lot of people seem to think that that's quite far-fetched. so all of these topics, any one of them would be huge in any given environment. they're big now because they're happening simultaneously and they're interrelated. >> quickly talk about xi's propaganda machine. >> a great story by our reporter who covers china. looking at their propaganda machine, that would make donald trump blush.
2:59 am
every newspaper in china was told to take his new speech and 50-year vision and carve it into your bones and distill it into your blood. they have, they do have total control of their media. and they're using that as one of the many tools to try to have dominance over us. so while we sit here and bicker and look at twitter. they're looking at a plan for 2025 and 2050, in the whole plan is designed to eat our lunch economically and i think a lot of people don't pay that much attention to it. >> chinese are known for always playing the long game when it comes to any kind of policy. >> we aren't. >> jim vandehei, great to have you in person. we'll check out axios a.m. in a little while and you can sign up for the newsletter by going to axios.com. and we have an update on the poll. bill karins winning 2-1, 64% to bill karins. sorry, louis. >> that does it for us, i'm

"morning joe" starts right now. you've said it should be wrapped up. do you believe that it should be wrapped up overall? or just as it pertains in any way to president trump? >> i think it should be wrapped up completely. i think in fact they should apologize to him for putting him through this and then someone should apologize to the united states of america for putting the country through this. >> that's president trump's attorney, rudy giuliani, he had more to say about the russia investigation yesterday. telling nbc's halle jackson, after days of no response, the special counsel has responded to some of giuliani's questions with regard to a potential presidential interview saying quote they're engaging us on several points where we could reach an agreement. asked for details, giuliani said quote, that's confidential. good morning, welcome to "morning joe," it's friday, may 18th. i'm willie geist
