raging floodwaters rushed through trapping workers and customers in business on this holiday weekend. cell phone videos show the strength of the flooding causing structures to collapse and cars to floot a -- floot away. >> what is that? >> this, the wine cooler. >> those that were stuck in buildings were told to go to upper levels until they could be rude. this team was working at a main street business when the flood came. she had feared this would happen again. >> i went to go tell customers we were closing and as soon as i went to lead them out of the store the whole road was completely flooded so i couldn't let them out and we just had to wait it out. we saw a jeep float by. we saw water coming in under the doors. i was like, all right. so i called my botion and he had to come down and get us. >> this woman says she was at a restaurant for air birthday w b the risings waters.

>> the poor girl, her wedding was flooded out. they said can we come snup weup? so about 150 people had to come farther up. it's terrible. >> reporter: it wasn't just main street that flooded. look at the sheer force of the water that made crossing dangerous. we found motorists driving through the water as streams and creeks overflowed their banks. trees and branches fell on roads forcing them to close. >> we've been standing up there blocking it because there's life lines down. and the u.s. gulf coast is bracing itself as alberto, the first tropical storm of the season approaches. winds rands are threatening to bring dangerous rip currents to the region. states of emergency have been declared from florida to

mississippi and over 20 million americans are facing flood watches. we have more. >> reporter: subtropical storm alberto slammed into cuba. 4 1/2 inches of rain fell in less than eight hours. now the storm threatens the gulf coast. >> this will be a storm that will affect us, sustained tropical storm-force winds are dangerous. >> reporter: along with the winds, lots of rain, up to 12 inches across florida, alabama, and mississippi. states of emergency have been declared in all three states. >> the big thing is down here everybody's got to watch, these things are unpredictable. >> reporter: residents in the florida panhandle are the worst. >> i am filling up sandbags to hopefully keep the rain water from coming in my front door. >> reporter: beaches that would normally be packed for memorial day weekend are now empty. after the storm makes landfall,

it's expected to move across the south. >> let's go to meteorologist bonnie schneider for more on this weather. bonnie. tracking alberto, it's bringing rain not only to panama city but also south florida. it's unorganized but is on the move and will likely impact a good portion of the mid-south going into the middle part of this week. so while you head back to work this week watch out for heavy rain through the tennessee valley. the storm system is a slow mover and will bring rain to coastal florida. we're look at hot weather for those barbecues today. temperatures 90 degrees in oklahoma city and texas. but above normal temperatures as far north as minneapolis and chicago into the 90s. that's where we're seeing temperatures above normal. also watch out for the threat of storms in the northern tier of the country. the south watching alberto and good news, at least for the incoming rain in maryland we're not looking at more rain for that area, at least not today.

>> thank you so much. in the on again off again back and forth surrounding the high stakes north korean nuclear summit as of now it is apparently game on with president trump now saying he and kim jong-un could meet for that historic summit in singapore on june 12th. the president confirmed on twitter that a team of u.s. officials has now arrived in north korea to, quote, make arrangements for the summit. that is we hear a third person could be in the room for that crucial meeting. let's go to janice frayer with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. what's happening behind the scenes has a sense of urgency but there's a lot of uncertainty around this. it's been a roller coaster over the past several days, but president trump confirming in that tweet that u.s. officials are now in direct talks with north korean officials at the dmz, that's about 35 miles from here. publicly, president trump after calling off the summit now says all sides want it to go forward.

>> a lot of people are working on it. it's moving along very nicely so we're looking at june 12th in singapore. that hasn't changed. and it's moving along pretty well. so we'll see what happens. >> reporter: this u.s. preparation team is being led by is unkim, he's a former u.s. ambassador to south korea and nuclear negotiator with the north so there's a lot of experience here. and that's given some relief of sorts to analysts who have been watching this situation very wearily and troubled by the lack of experience among the diplomats and experts who have been involved. they say this is a sign of progress. that said, however, setting an agenda for the summit is going to be incredibly tricky. it's unclear whether north korea is even willing to talk about complete denuclearization let alone agree to it or any version

of it. the central issue for now remains trust. it's getting these two sides to actually come to the table, to overcome these decades of animosity. kim jong-un this time last year was still testing missiles, the u.s. was still threatening retaliation. fast ford to now and kim jong-un had his second meeting with moon jae-in over the weekend and it's widely expected or speculated that moon may be in the room if kim and trump ever do meet. >> and that june 12th meeting is right around the corner. thanks so much. leading this news this morning, that teacher from indiana who was hailed as a hero for stopping an armed student inside his classroom was released from the hospital this weekend. he suffered gunshot wounds as he tackled the shooter who opened fire. the 13-year-old girl was also wounded and is listed in critical but stable condition. former president george h.w. bush is back in the hospital this morning after experiencing
