russia had an influence on his campaign and colluded. he has to hand his base and say what are you doing for us. in some ways he was definitely playing to his base. wanting to look like a strong man in europe. he was very clear he was going to antagonize our allies. in this case, he is keeping his promise, he is basically in line with what he said he was going to do so in this case, he is thinking about home when he does this. >> he is posing with another fe fe felllow there. his up coming encounter would actually be easier than dealing with nato and the uk. >> nato has not treated us fairly, but i think we will work

something out. we pay far too much and they pay far too little. i have nato, and i have the uk, and i have putin. frankly, putin may be the easiest of them all. who would think? >> another indication that trump has no problem trashing american's closest allies. here he goes. >> did we have a good relationship with russia? believe me, that is a good thing. a fantastic thing if we got along with russia and with putin. >> i hope we do have good relationships with russia. i have been saying it for years. >> i think it is very important to get along with russia. >> i think i could have a very good relationship with russia and with president putin and if it did, it would be a great thing. >> that's a good thing not a bad thing. >> getting along with russia

would be a good thing, and not a bad thing and just about everybody agrees with that except very stupid people. >> there we are. let's get back to david corn. what is driving him to trash our good friends for decades, in fact, centuries. >> have you ever heard him say it would be a good thing to have a good relationship with our allies, with germany, with canada. he doesn't say that about anything else other than russia. >> do you believe the dossier is driving him? >> not necessarily. there is something psychological. when it comes to justin trudeau, angela merkel, i don't think he believes he is an equal. he resents the fact that they want to be equal with him.

he sees a guy who he wants to be accepted by and who he wants to e emulate a strong man. >> merkel is far more impressive. >> well she is a woman and she is not an oligarch. >> there is your best shop, why is he kissing up to be blunt about it at the expense of our allies. >> he is either beholden to put ti -- puttin. but the mere fact that you are asking the question, chris, is the most dangerous and frightening part of this whole thing and let me make this point

and it may be the most important point i have to make. donald trump doesn't speak for america. even as he went to europe, passed a resolution saying to nato, we are with you. and we want you to be with us. we are not abandoning this historic relationship. that resolution was approved 98 to two. >> of course most of us grew up knowing that. it was used as a counter balance against the ussr alliance which included the satellite. the warsaw pack dissolved. many of the countries the u.ssr once. now on the western side and he is all alone out there. the feeling that i get is that

trump is going over to vladimir putin who lost the cold war, his country did, and he is a kgb separative, probably one of the killers from the kgb. sitting there with no allies and no satellites. and wants to ruin our deal. because the american alliance is strong as ever. why is trump doing this for him. why is he breaking up the west the way history broke up the east. >> unlike the g7 which is a trade club, president trump has to do a lot to get out of nato. and even though he has all of this rhetoric and is talking a lot. i spoke with nato sources here, and a lot of people from different countries and they said that president trump's rhetoric isn't changing day-to-day operations. president trump could loosen

increased defense spending. charlie, i want to get back to you on tpsychology of this president. i get the feeling he is jealous. jealous of justin trudeau. and jealous of angela merkel. what is it about this guy? >> well, he is also the kid on the playground who sees somebody that he can bully as opposed to this strong men that he admires. bob costa made a number of strong points. you want to think about the moral and historical basis of nato. he doesn't think of this in terms of values and the shared history. he thinks of it in terms of the

the government insisting that by the end of the day 38 would be reunited. the judge in california insisted that there would be no extension. warning these are firm deadlines not aspirational goals. the government had an obligation to reunite these families. still unclear how it will comply with the next deadline when it has to reunite 3,000 older children with their families. joined by julia ainsley. tell us where it stands and how worse it is going to get. >> the news we expected to hear today is that they had successfully reunited 34 children yesterday. it said they were eligible. everybody in place. they were going to reunify.

they are now a day past the t deadline and only four people have been reunited. a lot of complicated cases that they go through. people with criminal histories. one with an infectious disease. the majority of the parents came in with their children and are here and ready to take care of their children but they are in detention, deported or released. and sometimes i.c.e. has a hard time finding them which is hard to believe given that the government started the policy to begin with. >> these kids aren't human boomerangs. firstly you have to put a one-year-old or two-year-old on an airplane and somebody travels

with them. and there are phone systems in the country. you call up the foster parent saying we are going to pick up the kid. >> it seems that the majority of the case, these kids were not sent out to foster homes. the average time the child would spend in hhs care would be 60 days. so most of them is in hhs care which means it should be easy for the government to track them down. they interviewed 3,000 children in hhs care. you just said how young some of these children are. >> what is your mommy's name? >> exactly. >> what would have happened if they would not have the whistle blown on them. did they ever have a plan of reuniting the kids with their parents? >> not clear if they did.

you are given an a number. a child given a number and a parent with a different number. never a clear way how the government was going to bring the children together. they move the parents to a detention center near where the child was staying. it is complicated. >> this looks like, makes katrina look like disney world. thank you. new signs that michael cohen might be turning on president trump. his new layer says cohen has a new attitude on life right now. trump's brash talk over in europe. was this a warm up act for the president's visit. you are watching "hardball." i tend to play the tough guy.
