we appreciate you being here today. i had a chance to see the movie and just in credibly thought o provoking film. i want to start with the white voice. what does the white voice symbolize in the film? >> well, as danny glover's character likes to explain -- first of all, i want to say that clip is edited because there are different levels to it. he says i'm not talking about will smith white. that ain't white, that's just proper. that's one set of things we're not even talking about that. some people are like what you are talking about talking white? that's speaking properly. and we're not talking about that. in this, there's a magical white voice that is almost a mythical thing that he says that even white folks are performing when they're doing it because it's giving off this sense that everything's okay. that all the bills have been paid, that you don't really need this money when you're over the

phone trying to sell something. and it's this idea, it symbolizes the opposite almost of the racist black tropes that are put out there which are and other people of color which are that black folks are savage, people of color are -- the culture is just not sufficient. and those tropes have a utility. the utility is to say that, hey, poverty comes from the bad choices of the impoverished. and here's how we can show you that black folks culture is not all together. that's what's going on n reality, capitalism must have poverty. it must have a certain amount of unemployed people in order to exist. you cannot have full employment under capitalism because then everyone could ask for whatever wages they want and not be able to get fired.

necessi they worry when the unemployment rate is low. poverty is bumeilt into capitalism. they try to blame it on the folks that are impoverished. one way they do that is through the racist tropes. the opposite voice is -- that when black folks are trying to pretend that they're white over the phone is different than just regular cold switching because you may be trying to hide the fact that you're black because you're talking to folks that have this built in racism. and you want to -- you know, make a sale. >> let me ask you about the politics. you wrote this screen play in 2012. obviously we were in a different political time then. did you have to make adjustments to the current political environment before this film made it to the screen? >> yeah. so i wrote this. i finished writing in 2012.

we published it as a screen play in 2014. all of these things that -- all the story was there. it was just as relevant then. unfortunately, it was relevant 20, 40 years ago. in our 2014 version we had a line which is just mr. blank that his character said which was -- and there's a company there called worry free that is a slave labor company. and he says, worry free is making america great again. and that was in the 2014 version. we had to take it out because the real world had made my screen play too on the nose. >> just a few seconds left here, you described "sorry to bother you" as a dark comedy with magical realism and sci-fi. and the film does take some odd twists, i have to say. how do you think this film is going to resonate with your

audience? >> well, it's already proven to resonate as something that with all the fantastic elements reads more true than most of the supposedly hyper real things that they show about our community because it deals with issues that aren't dealt with. but does it in a fun way where people are kept laughing at the same time as they're thinking and there is some, you know, like you said, out there stuff in it. but it takes you -- it takes you for a loop the same way life does. and i think some people are, you know, everyone is saying oh, i got shook by that or whatever. >> we ran out of time, man. >> i think it's exciting. >> it is thought provoking, for sure. we thank you for your time. that wraps it up for this hour of msnbc. i'm aaron gilchrist. alright guys let's go! let's do this.
