2:07 am
guiliani said trump wanted everything to be above board. to go the way you expect things to go, typically, when these kind of payments are made. almost immediately people in cohen's catch started pushing back saying, no, no, no, that's not what the tape says, now we have the tape. based on my listening to it, it seems to line one cohen's version of events rather than guiliani's version of events, though guiliani disputes that. essentially, we have a battle between michael cohen's lawyers and the president's lawyers. very significant. >> looming over all of this is robert mueller and his investigation. how could something like this play into the mueller investigation. does it say anything or signal anything about michael cohen's willingness to work with the special investigator? >> the legal matter related to michael cohen was initially unearthed by mueller's probe, mueller handed it over to investigators in the southern district of new york. that said, one thing i can tell you based on a conversation last

2:35 am
>> reporter: the impact is likely to be extremely detrimental and unless the federal government is willing to continue re-upping this type of aid, eventually it will catch one farmers. one of the biggest problems is once pharrellers or an exporter loses access to a particular market, which appears to be happening in the case of many american formers who sold their products to china, it's difficult to regain access to that market. so even if eventually this trade war is concluded. you know all the tension is dissipated, it's likely many of these chinese import lers have found different farmers and producers from which to purchase these products. a market lost once is a market very hard to regain. that's why from a structural perspective, these tariffs are a hume problem for farmers there so let's talk about this politically, betsy. we know as we played in the segment right before trade's tariff, they are drawing criticisms from a lot of his own
2:36 am
gop the question, though, that going to translate into votes lost come the mid-terms? >> reporter: one thing we know is that the country of the united states has entered punitive trade relationships with are specifically looking for ways to tailor their tariffs so they are as politically potent as possible, particularly in the case of the eu. they have gone after companies like harley-davidson, trying to hit the president's base where it hurts. these economic issues, these pocketbook issues are often the ones they care about the most it can be off to game out how this will play out. we know countries are looking for ways to maximize political damage. additionally, we know the condition is escalateing, despite the fact is (handing) out $12 billion. there are reports they are considering an additional $500 billion on new tariffs on chinese imports. this trade war is not going away or getting cooler. >> that means the political impact will be magnified.
2:37 am
>> this will be a tough nut to crack for the gop. part of the platform in the mid-terms have been the economy. they want it to be the economy. they know their base cares about that. if this trade war continues to escalate, it will be a problem for them. that's right. betsy, thank you for. that we will see you on "morning joe '80s in a bit. senator republican richard berg of north carolina is breaking with devon nunez and defending the under surveillance of a former trump campaign adviser. yesterday burr said there were sound reasons for spying on carter page, it included evidence from a dossier funded by the checkpoint campaign. here's house intelligence chairman devon nunez monday night followed by burr yesterday. >> we're really happy that it came out. we have been fighting for this for months, for this nice sa application. we want those to be redacted so

the american public has a chance to see this. >> i said before there were many things that should not find their way into the public donain, nice sa applications are an awful precedent. if the american people have learned from its release is there was great justification to the courts as to why nice sa application was approved. >> all right. switching gears here, more americans believe that president trump has weakened the country than making it stronger. the latest quinnipiac university pom revealed that 35% of americans believe trump has strengthened the u.s., while 51% say the president has weakened the country. up 4 points since juvenl when asked if the president wants what's best for the country or himself, four in ten said trump wants what's best for the country. a little over half said he wanted what's best for himself. and as trump continues to royal against the mueller investigation, 55% say the probe is fair, up five points since last month.
2:39 am
31% said it was not. meanwhile a week after the trump-putin summit in helsinki a little over americaning polled believe the russian government has compromising information on president trump. 35% said they disagree with that. when asked who was successful in helsinki, 27% said the u.s. succeeded, while 73% said russia succeeded in those talks. >> those last two polls are quite striking there. and a new poll shows how much of an impact president trump's rhetoric has on the public image among republicans. in fact, a pugh poll shows the favorability among republicans dropped 16 percentage points shortly before trump took office. additionally, negative views have doubled in that same period. now 49% of republicans and republican leaning independents say they have a favorable penalties of the bureau while 4% say they view it negatively.
