. this morning, the feud between the president and his attorney general continues. there is new reporting that president trump is still talking about firing jeff out tear primaries last fight setting the stage for highly competitive general election battles come november. in florida, tam has see mayor andrew gillum narrowly one in one of the most significant upsets of the season. one of the most significant upsets of the se ason he becomes the first african-american major party in history. gillum will face trump backed congressman ron desantis. in arizona, meanwhile, it is on the cusp of electing the first

female senator. the first female senator congress woman kyrsten will faid face off against martha mcsally who defeated kelly word and farmer sheriff joe arpaio in her bid. mcsally, who tried to distance herself from the outgoing senator, jeff flake, yesterday refused to comment on flake's service to the state. watch this. >> reporter: has he sebbed the state well? >> you guys can sort that out. >> joining us later on ""morning joe," request itself the governor andrew gillum. it's been a year since hurricane maria and puerto rico was left devastated. report from george washington university estimates that nearly 3,000 people died in the after math of the storm. that's dramatically higher than the previous official count of just 64. the storm ripped through puerto

taken place in puerto rico. >> the white house put out a statement yesterday reading, in part, quote the president remains proud of all the work that the federal family undertook to help our fellow citizens if puerto rico. the federal government will continue to support the government of puerto rico and the puerto rican communities for years to come. >> last week, president trump acknowledged what his top advisers have been saying for months, that north korea is not taking steps to end the north korea missile programs. the large scale exercises between the u.s. and south korea james mattis says may be reinstated. >> we took the step to suspend several of the largest exercises as a good faith measure coming out of the singapore summit. we have no plans at this time to suspend any more exercises. we suspended several exercises

at the direction of the president, the good faith effort was made. we have had -- we have done no planning for suspending others. >> after the singapore summit back in june, president trump cancelled those exercises saying they are too costly. he called them provocative war games. it's a characterization secretary mattis was asked about yesterday. >> reporter: if the u.s. goes forward with the exercise again as they have annually next year, are they now a provocative. >> i don't have a crystal ball right now. let's see how the negotiations go. even answering a question in a -- in that manner could influence the negotiation. let's let the negotiation -- let's let the diplomats go forward. we all know the gravity of the issue we are dealing with. >> back to president trump accusing google and other tech giants bias claiming they are rigging search rules against him. he says google and others are

suppressing voices and hiding information in news that is good. >> that attack came after fox business network aired a thinly sourced segment on the topic the night before. now administration may be looking at whether google searches should be regulated. >> i think google is really taking advantage of a lot of people. i think that's very serious thing and is serious charge. we have literally thousands and thousands of complaints coming in. you just can't do that. so i think google and twitter and facebook, they're really treading on very, very troubled territory and they have to be careful. it's not fair to large portions of the population. >> reporter: does the president believe or does the administration feel there needs to be some form of regulation for google or what exactly wha was the president speaking ability? >> we'll let you know. we're looking at it. >> they put out a statement, google search is not used to set a political agenda and we don't bias our results towards any

political ideology. amid the mu skepticism the bilateral trade deal, the president took to twitter tweeting out, i smile at senators and other talking about how good free trade is for the u.s. what they don't say is that we lose jobs and over 800 billion dollars a year on really dumb trade deals him these law makers are fine with this. we feel e 12 hours later, he tweeted out, quote, our new trade deal with mexico focuses on farmers, growth for our country, tearing down trade barriers, jobs and having companies brought back into our company. it will be a big hit. nebraska senator ben sass responded in a statement saying, quote, this is simply wrong. trade creates american jobs, period. this is bake economics, and actual american experience for the last 75 years. well, during his announcement of the deal, trump appeared to

threaten, to leave out canada, but members of congress, including republican pat toomey says, there is a lot more to it than that. >> can the president unilaterally kill nafta without coming to congress? >> no, no, absolutely not. we certainly want to see canada as part of this. but the president can't use the trade promotion authority that he was given, right, the expedited procedures in the senate especially to switch this to a bilateral agreement when the president informed congress and invoked tpa, it was for the purpose of reforming faust. a bilateral agreement with mexico is not a reform of nafta. it's something entirely different. >> we have the last major primary from november. joining us a role call journalist w. the results from last night. what does it mean as far as setting the stage for november and especially those really hotly contested races we watch,

especially in arizona and what does that mean for the president as those misterms approach? >> yeah, have you two competitive races in arizona and florida. they're tee'd up. martha mcsally is facing a competitive race against kyrstin. it's a top of the broadcast, mechanically kyrstin. it's a top of the broadcast, mechanically tried to be a little more conservative. she declined to praise flake yesterday as you mentioned. she won fairly handsly. it was a three-way contest. look for her to potentially moderate now that that primary is over. in florida, again another really competitive race for scott presumed to win the republican nom nation. he didn't have any trouble last night. she bringing a lot of money and strong challenge towards bill nelson. >> a stunning one out of florida, the gubernatorial race

out of that state. >> i want to switch gears and talk about the drama inside the president's administration, particularly his relationship with jeff sessions. there are reports that president trump has for now at least decided to hold off on firing the attorney general. what is the likelihood president trump actually sticks to that promise and what do we expect to see if, in fact, he doesn't and he does go ahead and fire jeff sessions? what kind of impact would it have on some of his top aides and hess advisers? >> who knows the likelihood of trump doing or not doing anything is. i think can you say for sure a lot of republicans are nervous about him axeing sessions especially before the mid-term. >> that would throw a lot of chaos into a chaotic administration, especially in these suburban house districts through the administration is unpopular. that's something they don't want to see. >> it will be interesting to see how it all plays out, if, in fact, it happens.

total confidence in the attorney general. i think he ought to stay exactly where he is. >> reporter: should jeff session business replaced? >> i don't think so. i think jeff sessions is a good man. he brings unquestioned integrity to this office. >> it has been nearly two weeks since the white house announced president trump is revoking former cia john brennan's security clearance. since then, brennan says he hasn't heard a word from the white house or the cia, therefore, he may still have it. >> the only thing i heard is when sarah huckaby sanders says my clearance had been stripped. i have not been contacted by anybody before or since then, whether or not, she read something from donald trump, but -- >> but yesterday the white house confirmed that brennan, who was a senior nbc news analyst has been stripped of his security

clearance. one senior white house person said it's delayed without offering further explanation. there is interesting reporting at the atlantic about trump and an allie devon nunez and his recent trip to the united kingdom, in fact, he reportedly went looking for intel on christopher steele. you may recall he is behind the trump russia dossier. he requested meetings with the heads of three british intelligence agencies but they never met with him, wary that he was quote trying to stir up controversy. while nunez was discussing russian organized crime bruce orr him the president routinely targeted orr. yesterday, orr spent eight hours testifying behind doors into the gop probe into the or jens of the russia investigation. joining us from washington, d.c.

once again, reporter for role call, simone, great to have you back with us. what does this say this nunez trip about how republicans plan to proceed with the russia probe the fact that he went oversea, tried to set up these meetings with british intelligence agencies that refuse to see it? >> 83, i think it says a certain faction of republicans are really dead set here on investigating the investigation. >> that is something that is not going away. it's something a lot of their base support. that's not to say all republican, of course, are on board with this. there are those who would like to see the russia investigation proceed without hamstrings here by some congressional republicans. >> i want to turn now, simone to this reporting about jeff sessions firing him, you have said to the republicans there as we heard, lindsey graham made it clear is 80, holy hell will be paid if he's fired. have you the other side of these five senators who want him to

stay strong and hold on there. what does it say about this tuck of war back and forth and how that will influence the president, if at all? >> reporter: yeah a couple give things, remember, these are his former colleagues. some would like to see him stay in the job. they love him, respect him. others never agree with him on big issues like criminal justice reform, legalization of marijuana, programs. and others are just concerned that the administration is in a problematic place, if the president does not have a strong working relationship with his attorney general. >> and not to mention the fact na his senate seat he gave up ultimately flipped by democrats. i think a lot of people say if it was all worth it to have jeff sessions in that position for a short time. live for us in washington today. memorial services for josh john mccain will begin today as he lies in state at the arizona capital, meanwhile in washington, d.c.,ests to enshrine his legacy appears to be facing some resistance.

senate minority leader chuck schum were proposed renaming a building in honor of mccain. other resist that move for a variety of reasons. >> majority leader mitch mcconnell says he will form a bipartisan group to discuss the best way to honor mccain. he says he was not notified in advance adding the senate does not move so quickly to honor deceased colleagues and that there should be dlib rakes on the matter. meanwhile, senator mccain's cliques, senator lindsey graham offered an emotional tribute to his close friend yesterday on the floor of the senate. standing next to mccain's desk, draped in a black cloth with white roses, graham made a heart felt appeal to his fellow lawmakers. >> i do not cry for a perfect man. i cry for a man who had honor and always was willing to admit to his imperfection.

what else did i learn? i learned how to fight. a lot. everything and everybody. i learned how to forgive. and from him i saw how to heal. he had wanted to be president. he was prepared to be president. but it was not his to have. and i remember above all else the speech he gave that night, john taught us how to lose. when you go throughout the world people remember his concession speech as much as anything else andion said, that night, president obama is now my president. so he healed the nation at a time he was hurt. it is going to be a lonely journey for me for a while.

november 6 election the president added, is very much a referendum, not only on me, it's a referendum on your religion, it's a referendum on free speech and the amendment. he claims to have gone rid of the johnson amy, which forbids churches from endorsing political candidates. of course the president cannot get rid of a law. he issued a executive order to direct the irs to no longer enforce it. a state wide leader follows the news last week implicateing him in a scheme to cover up his alleged affairs with a porn star and a playboy modem. >> earlier this summer president trump invoked pearl harbor as a negotiating tool with japan, during a meeting with japanese prime minister shinzo abe at the white house back in early june the president told abe, quote, i remember pearl harbor, evidentially to set up a blistering critique of policies

a.m. jonathan swan. what's the scoop. >> don mcgahn, white house counsel, stepping down this fall according to senior white house officials and sources close to mcgahn. we've spoke ton a number of people with the top level of the administration. the person everyone without exception wants to replace don mcgahn is emmet flood, brought in in may to represent the president from inside the white house on the mueller probe. don mcgahn himself wanted emmett flood to be his successor, told a confidant he had the perfect blend of skills to handle what's surely coming next year, if the democrats win the house which is a blizzard of subpoenas and congressional investigations and potentially impeachment proceedings. >> talk to us about the timing of mcgahn's pending decision to depart. your assessment it's a mutual
