thought maybe some people fell over. were there any injuries? >> there were seven people who sustained minor injuries, nothing serious, and they're all being treated. >> it was due to the running. >> yes, not due to the barrier falling over. they are being looked after, we have full medical support, and according to what i've been told, nothing serious. >> the first time that you and i met, it may have been the first global citizen. i think it almost certainly was. you were talking about this concert in central park. are they really going to pull this off? it seems like a lot logistically. the planning that goes into this is basically a year long effort. i know that you guys put a tremendous amount of effort and coordination with security authorities and the nypd to make sure that everything is set up and safe. >> we spend the whole year making sure this is a safe event. we want to make sure every global citizen is safe. then we want people to have a

great night. and we want them to be able to change the world. >> by the way, this is a showcase for new york city. this is central park. just know that the city of new york works with global citizen and msnbc is a partner with global citizen to make sure this is the safest place to be in the world right now. >> we have secret service. this is the place that takes it very seriously. >> absolutely. >> as you can hear behind me, the music is going on, it's continuing, and it's continuing because ultimately people are here for a greater good. >> it's been an incredible lineup so far. how do you get the bands here? >> how do you get them? >> well, full credit goes to chris martin of cold play, and our incredible artist booking team, headed by katie hill. >> you buried the lead. chris martin of cold play helps

book the acts? >> yes, he made a 15 year commitment to global citizen, he said he wanted to help for the next 15 years to end world poverty. he said he wanted to make sure he would invite the artists to be a part of it. >> that's amazing. every year you guys escalate, you sort of ratchet up the level of -- janet jackson, that's a heck of a booking. chris martin is working the phones, like calling all of these acts. >> when we were in south africa together. he sent a message to jay z and beyonce, when we're in the township of soweto. and he sent a photo, and beyonce and jay z wrote back and said they're considering it. a few weeks later, they said, we want to be a part of this. >> that's the december 2nd global citizen concert in south africa. >> is this the first year you're doing two different concerts? >> we took global citizen to
5:03 pm
india with cold play and jay z with 100,000 people. we took it to hamburg germany last year. >> you got 100,000 people in india? >> yes. >> in mumbai? >> it was right in the heart of mumbai. the prime minister addressed the crowd, it was incredible. >> and then last year we took global citizen to hamburg germany with pharrell, shakira. we had jim kim who's here with us tonight. >> i saw him backstage. >> this is a growing movement. >> it's amazing. for the umpteen people who have texted me, how do you get tickets to this event? >> the way that global citizens come to this event. they take action in support of the world's poor. what does an action mean?
5:04 pm
we actually -- they download the global citizen act, they may send a tweet, a donation. they may volunteer. they earn points, and all those points help them get here. >> i sent a tweet. but it's actually compelling governments, the european union, turkey. you have these governments, canada that are pledging billions of dollars as a result. >> ireland just said they're upping their commitment. >> ireland should be praised. what they just announced is extraordinary. >> $800 million a year to 3 billion. that's almost 1% of the income. >> .7% of the total gdp. it's remarkable. i think the irish government like the u.k. government should be praised. like some of the scandinavian governments. >> hugh evans thank you for
5:05 pm
coming down. >> thank you for all your hard work. >> thank you, absolutely, happy to be here. >> we have more folks on stage at this moment. there's been a variety of big commitments announced tonight. the one from ireland i announced earlier, really remarkable. i just -- when he's talking .7% of gdp. that's not .7% of the government's budget, that's every cent that flows through the irish economy. when you think about it in those terms, you think about how the amount of money to eradicate global poverty is clearly there. think about, what if every rich country in the oecd got to that level or to 1%. if one out of every $100, cycles through the american economy and the eu's economy. went to alleviating the most extreme poverty in the world. >> you're seeing the european

5:07 pm
it's about getting the united states to step back up to the plate. it's shameful, frankly. >> it's really sad. that's one of the things that made me really sad over the last couple days. the notion used to be based here in the united states, and now we're watching all of these other countries step up while we're cutting aid to gaza, to the palestinians, cutting foreign aid in general and pulling back from the world. it's sad. >> we're also in a situation this year where one of the themes tonight is about refugees, refugee education. the u.s. setting new record lows. >> and the ones who are leer are not being treated so well. >> taking money from all kinds of other programs, to fund detention of migrants, coming to this country to seek asylums. >> i was going to say, all of that said, one of the things i like about this concert every

year, is to remind myself, one of the things that's happening under all the news here in the united states did is it the case. the most extreme poverty, exposed to the most extreme deprivation has been reduced greatly greatly. they come out of grinding poverty. >> i remember live aid, when africa was seen as this bastion of nothing but poverty. there are so many success stories. the east african nations themselves made a commitment. some countries are not wealthy countries themselves, in terms of their own gdp, but the openness to refugees, the willingness to educate them. countries who are taking in children who are fleeing war and violence. and also committing to make sure they educate them all the way through high school. there are programs, i learned
5:09 pm
about this week as part of this global citizen experience, who are pledging to make sure that refugee children get into college. they're saying, let's make sure that we're educating these kids all the way through university. >> we live on a planet. sometimes we do our job, we forget we live on a blarn et. throughout the world, there's a lot of good going on. >> we're here in central park this evening, we have big acts coming up, the biggest arguably, or the two biggest still ahead of us. janet jackson is coming up, we're going to take a break, don't go anywhere. know what goes great with steak and shrimp? more shrimp.
5:10 pm
and you know what goes great with that shrimp? you guessed it. more shrimp.
5:11 pm
steak and unlimited shrimp, starting at $15.99. only at outback. and if you get lost, just hit me on the old horn. man: tom's my best friend, but ever since he bought a new house... tom: it's a $10 cover? oh, okay. didn't see that on the website. he's been acting more and more like his dad. come on, guys! jump in! the water's fine! tom pritchard. how we doin'? hi, there. tom pritchard. can we get a round of jalapeño poppers for me and the boys, please? i've been saving a lot of money with progressive lately, so... progressive can't protect you from becoming your parents. but we can protect your home and auto

we're back here in central park on this beautiful fall evening here in the great city of new york. the jewel that has sat here in the middle of the city for over 100 years. we've had a little bit of excitement and panic, that has disrupted things a little bit, even though it is all good. i want to make sure you know that. if you're just joining us, you saw there was a barrier that fell. the barrier falling made a sound, the sound prompted a bunch of people to get understandably super panicked. when other people saw other people running, you have a chain reaction, there's a barrier over here, people jumping over them. everybody's all right. everything's fine. all that said, we're on hooks
5:14 pm
for janet jackson who is the next act. and there's music happening. that's not music. janet jackson is the next act. and we're just sort of talking about what we've seen happening here today. i've been doing global citizen for i think -- since the first year, i'm pretty sure. i guess this is my 7th year. and one thing i've noticed is, the politics of the -- their politics have gotten sharper. you have jeffrey stacks on stage today. one of the things that is the demands now, is a billionaire wealth tax. he got on stage and said, look, the world's billionaires have a tremendous amount of money. jeff besos, the founder and owner of amazon, ceo of amazon increased his wealth $83 billion in just one year. >> unbelievable. >> $83 billion in just a year.
5:15 pm
he ran through statistics about the wealth of the world, 82% of the total growth in economic product in the world went to billionaires? >> yeah. >> seems impossible. >> when you talk about poverty -- this is something you talk about, you have wealth and equality is one aspect that we have to deal with. you also have to deal with mass migration, we have right now the largest human movement on the planet since world war ii. >> in terms of migration. >> yes. >> and this is something that chris, i -- to your credit, you've tried to bring up over and over again. climate change is a huge factor. war sends people on the move. violence sends people on the move, so you have this huge human movement, and a lot of it is movement into europe, a lot of it is movement into sub saharan africa and the united states, the movement is not going to stop. the exacerbation of wealth and equality. the combination of that and
5:16 pm
migration is fueling the political drama. >> in the era of donald trump, it's no surprise that the global citizen festival has gotten more political. >> i remember last year, at the end when stevie wonder took a knee, we were all like, wow! we haven't seen a moment like that before. moments like that this fess aval continue to happen. i think naomi campbell is up on stage right now, take a look. >> she's sold over # 00 million records worldwide and has spent her 36 year career advocating for marginalized and vulnerable people all over the world, everywhere about i want to hear you scream! global citizens, you got to scream more. [ please welcome, janet jackson. [ cheers and applause ]

>> the syrian death count has climbed to nearly half a million since the war began. >> in the eyes of god, a child on the other side of the border is no less worthy of love and compassion than my own child. >> after sandy hook, where 20 6 and 7-year-olds were slain, we vowed this would never happen again, it's happened more than 20 times in two years. >> shooting of another black man. >> that is the reason black people do not have trust for white police officers, where you have no sense of commitment to the life and the needs of the people in the community.
5:18 pm
♪ >> between 2001 and now, we have seen three times more deaths -- >> there is no human being superior to any other human being on the face of this earth. >> saturday's violence in charlottesville have put a spotlight on the violence. >> this is not simply about black versus white, this is about right versus wrong. ♪
