we've got your one big thing for the morning. joining us from washington, co-founder and ceo of axios jim vandehide. what is this morning's one big thing? >> it's all about nikki haley and basically how are they going to replace her? how trump thinks about these roles is obviously different than other unorthodox presidents have. he looks at it as a casting of a movie role. does this person fit with collection i have assembled, do i have a good gut feel for this person? does this person fit the role? yesterday he said she brought glamour to the u.n. job. i don't think people typically think of it as a glamorous position. i think they typically think of it as a diplomatic position.

but he does care about whether or not someone looks the part, feels like they would be the right person on stage, on camera for him on this said topic. >> so who is favored to replace nikki haley, given what you just outlined. who are some of the people that could potentially meet some of those criterion that the president wants? >> what we're hearing is it's deena powell's job if he wants it. the white house, the president pretty much signaled that yesterday in his comments. i think he feels like he would be replacing nikki haley with someone he knows, someone who is female, which is important given that this is a male come the nated white house and he is somewhat sensitive to that. there is some opposition to deena, you have john kelly, john bolton, now breitbart who hates anybody who they might think is a globalist stirring things up. not clear if she actually does want it.

nikki haley, the best tell from people around here is her eyes are on 2024. i don't think she wants to be in the senate. i think she wants the presidency and i think she wants the presidency when trump is gone. if you look at how she left yesterday, she went out of her way to say i'm going to be campaigning with this guy. they praised jared kushner and ivanka trump. she's one of the few people who have been able to leave on her terms. there's no rumors that trump pushed her out. my guess is the timing is not totally coincidental. she obviously said publicly she had some issues with how people were handling that topic. but i think it will be a couple of years before we see what her next play is. >> so oxon, as he know, is taking a hard look at the surge of voters in the democratic primary. tell us where it matters for the general elections. >> yeah. it is a big deal, actually. when people talk about a wave,

no one has a clue if a wave is coming or not. but you look for a couple of indicators. the biggest indicator is that in every election so far since trump the became president, democrats are way outperforming. their performance compared to 2014 meaning there's this much higher turnout. in two-thirds of the 19 races, democrats have doubled turnout from 2014. so that is not minor. that's major. that's significant. if you carry that kind of momentum, that kind of turnout into all these other races that are in place, it could be more than a wave. it could be a massive wave. that doesn't mean it happens that way, but that is probably the greatest indicator that democrats are not just complaining, that they're actually voting. and democrats are typically not great voters in off year elections which is why republicans typically clean their clock in midterms. >> jim vandehei, as always, thank you. reading a reading axios a.m. in a little
