this group of voters is at 45%, some of the very best marks of his presidency to date. this as enthusiasm about the election is up among core groups that support democrats. 70% of the party's voters have high interest in the election, while 71% have seen an increase. high interest is at 68% among black voters, 67% among women and 57% among young voters. >> we've got a new round of polling this weekend showing a bit of a tilt toward the democrats in florida that has bill nelson with a five-point lead over republican governor rick scott. and then in that governor's race, tallahassee mayor andrew

fact, killed inside its consulate in istanbul. per the kingdom he died during a quarrel and a fistfight and that those involved attempted to conceal what happened. saudi arabia also says that 18 people have been arrested and several high ranking officials including a top intelligence office and a top advisor to the crown prince have both been fired. recent reports have stated that the crown pirince personally ordered the operation to try to lure kashoggi back to capture him. although they maintain mbs had no advance knowledge of the incident. >> you want the information you put out to be as accurate as you possibly can. we're not an authoritarian

government. we're a monarchy. what compounded the mistake was the attempt to try to cover up. that is unacceptable in any government. these things, unfortunately, happen. we have never engaged in such behavior and we never will. this is an aberration, this is a mistake, this was a criminal act and those responsible for it will be punished. >> so you may recall that last week president trump told reporters that, quote, rogue killers may actually be to blame. the crown prince reportedly called kashoggi's eldest son over the weekend to express his condolences. erdogan is promising to reveal what his country knows about the situation tomorrow, saying it will be done in full nakedness. in a new interview over the weekend, president trump seemed to stand by the crown prince.

speaking to the "washington post," the president said he had not heard or seen a tape of the attack on kashoggi and reiterated secretary of state mike pompeo hadn't seen anything either. the president told the post i've heard all about the videos or the tapes. nobody would get it faster than me. nobody has been able to show it. president trump did not call for the ouster of mbs, but instead praised the prince's leadership, calling him a strong person with very good control. he added the crown prince is seen as a person who can keep things under check, adding i mean that in a positive way. still, the president did leave open the possibility that more info could come out that might point the finger at mbs. quote, nobody has told me he's responsible, nobody has told me he's not responsible. president trump then repeated saudi arabia's account of what happened, saying there's a possibility the prince found out about it afterward and could be something in the building went

city here in the southern part of the country. it is a critical juncture for this caravan. it is where the prior caravan reorganized to move north to the united states. >> translator: we're going to keep moving forward. >> this man has been traveling for more than a week with his 2-year-old daughter. now the mexican government says it won't use force to stop the migrants. here in the guatemalan side of the border patience is wearing thin. rather than wait in this line to apply for refugee status in the heat, some desperate migrants have decided to cross into mexico illegally. we met this woman as she climbed onto a raft hoping to eventually reach the u.s. she doesn't believe applying for refugee status will work and she's afraid to return to honduras. we live in a terrible situation in our country, she says, telling us her son was beaten by the military. but others are turning around, boarding buses back to honduras. has it been very hard?

base. it also invokes fears in voters. we've seen that to be a great motivator in voters. this is an issue that really fires up the right and fires up the president's base ahead of november. >> one thing that white house officials are talking about today is that approval rating in some of those new polls showing president trump's approval rating is actually ticking up. but you also have half of likely voters who want democrats to control congress. how do you square that? what stands out to you here? >> it's definitely interesting and different from polls we've seen. the "wall street journal" said this is unprecedented turnout since starting to conduct this in 2006. unlike before where people thought there was going to be this massive blue wave, that's actually changed. republicans have been able to

close that enthusiasm gap a bit more. democrats are still showing more interest in this election and they have key demographic groups, minorities, women, latinos, hispanics. the problem is those groups normally have sub par turnout, so it's really going to come down to whether people come out and vote. a russian woman working for an oligarch close to vladimir putin had been charged with attempting to meddle with this year's midterm elections. the charges filed in the eastern district of virginia accuse the woman of using social media to create thousands of social media and e-mail accounts appearing to be from people in the united states to, quote, create diverse social media content. among the other topics were gun

control, gay rights, the women's march and the nfl anthem debate, as well as specific events including the las vegas shooting and the unite the right rally in charlottesville, virginia. and politicians attacked including john mccain, paul rubio and barack obama. according to court documents, the content adopted several viewpoints, not just one. president trump denied any link to the russian national that was charged in his campaign. >> had nothing to do with my campaign. with all of the hackers and everything that you see, nothing to do with my campaign. if they're hackers, a lot of them probably like hillary clinton better than me. now they do. now they do. but they go after some hacker in russia. they say, oh, had nothing do do with my campaign. >> according to the "wall street journal" and the "washington

welcome back. dozens of people are recovering after a floor collapsed at a party in south carolina. this video we're about to play is tough to watch. you're looking at a homecoming party near clemson university early sunday. people are dancing, jumping up and down. then all of a sudden the floor on the first level gave way. people go crashing into the basement there. about 30 people were hurt. clemson university's president says the school's support system is absolutely available for any student affected by this fall. switching gears for a moment, a u.s. general was wounded in an attack that killed two senior afghan provincial officials officials. the attack targeted a group that included the senior u.s. commander in that country. yesterday a spokesperson for nato's resolute support mission confirmed that army brigadier general jeffrey smiley is

recovering from one gunshot wound sustained in that attack. smiley was hit by gunfire during an attack carried without by the governor's body guard. he also killed the brief, intelligence chief and wounded the governor. let's get a check on your weather now with nbc meteorologist bill karins. another big hurricane on the way. >> mother nature put on a show off the coast of mexico toefovee weekend. this is another bordering on category 5 hurricane just off mexico. 155 miles an hour winds. the reason this one's a big deal is that it's heading toward mexico. this is the ninth category 4 or 5 storm we've had in the eastern pacific. that's a record. this is the most active record we've had. here's the forecast path. it has about 36 hours until

landfall, then it's going to rain itself out and weaken over the mountains of mexico, but all that moisture is eventually going to head into texas. last week that's all we talked about was horrendous flooding in texas. through wednesday evening another two to three inches possible, this whole area of central and west central texas, which has had the worst flooding last week. it's also a chilly morning out there, a chilly sunday in areas of the northeast. about 67 people million people under frost advisories or freeze warnings. it's a cold start to your day, but this afternoon -- it's that time of year where it's very cold in the mornings but we still have a decent amount of sunshine. a little later we'll take a look at the week ahead forecast. all that rain in texas is going to head up the east coast this week and it may just get here

monday morning alongside ayman mohyeldin, louis burgdorf. let's start with the morning's top stories. president trump is still defending the saudi crown prince over the death of jamal kashoggi. a bunch of top republicans have been out this weekend saying they do believe mohammed bin salman was in fact behind the killing of the journalist. watch. >> i feel certain that the crown prince was involved and that he directed this. that's why i think we can not continue to have relations with him. i think he's going to have to be replaced, frankly. but i think that sanctions don't go far enough. i think we need to look at the arms sale. this is not just about this journalist being killed. it's about the war in yemen where tens of thousands of civilians are being killed. >> we have intercept from the past that point to involvement at a very high level. let's let this play out.

but my guess is at the end of the day the united states and the rest of the world will believe fully that he did it. >> can you imagine us having a relationship with the saudi government that's positive if the crown prince is still there? >> no, i don't think so. again, if the facts lead to what we all suspect they will, i think it will be very problematic for our relationship going forward. >> president trump discussed his son-in-law jared kushner amid questions over his relationship with prince mohammed bin salman. according to the post, there was a deliberate effort to sideline kushner, who developed a strong connection with mbs. trump offered him support in his interview. he said that jared doesn't do business with saudi arabia. they, referencing kushner and mbs, are two young guys. jared doesn't know him well or anything. they are just two young people.

they're the same age. they like each other, i believe. jared has done a good job. president trump has withdrawn the united states from another international treaty. on saturday he announced he's pulling the u.s. out of the cold war era arms control treaty with russia that was signed by president reagan and gorbachev back in 1987. the trump administration is accusing russia of violating that agreement. the obama administration had also accused russia of dropping and testing a prohibited cruise missile. president trump said the u.s. would not start to develop these types of weapons unless russia and china agree not to also, although china is not part of this treaty. the kremlin has responded saying

it is a, quotes, very dangerous step. gorbachev calls the step very strange and not the work of a great mind. back in 2016 candidate trump reportedly questioned why the u.s. can't use nuclear weapons. and in the summer of 2017, he said he wanted to increase the u.s.'s nuclear arsenal tenfold. if democrats win the majority in the house in november, they plan to reopen the investigation into russian interference in the 2016 election. democrats say the republicans ignored key facts and important witnesses and want to restart parts of the investigation if they win in november. adam schiff, the top democrat on the house intelligence committee, tells the associated press his party would have to, quote, ruthlessly prioritize the most important matters first. shiff and other lawmakers say they are closely watching robert mueller's russia investigation

and the probe to look for possible gaps they could fill. the republican-led intelligence committee was the only house panel to investigate the meddling charges. its investigation is now closed saying they found no evidence of collusion. president trump has been campaigning furiously in the final weeks of the election season with four stops scheduled in the next six days including tonight in houston, texas. the president is hammering the kavanaugh controversy and immigration with a tweet calling on congress to change the immigration laws. quote, now even though congress will not return until after the elections. the president claims congress is still working hard behind the scenes, making this promise on saturday in nevada. >> we are going to be putting in and are studying very deeply right now round-the-clock a major tax cut for middle income

joining us, senior writer at roll call nils. congratulations to you. let's talk through this tax cut thing. sort of a strange promise given that congress is not in session at all. what has the reaction been? >> the reaction has been lukewarm at best. i think that the folks who are republicans at the ways and means committee and congressional leadership were probably a little surprised by the president's comments over the weekend when he was in nevada. i think that the big question is going to be whether or not we even get that one-page document from the treasury department or something like that. there's no way, obviously, that there's going to be an actual legislative push before election day. but this may have been something that trump was doing, i would guess, because he was looking at the markets and was trying to

come up with something to say that might help boost the stock market ahead of the election. >> let me ask you about politics real quick. since we are in the final weeks of the election, let's talk a little bit about the ground game. do we expect to see democrats change their ground game strategy as president trump becomes more visible on the campaign trail? >> we've been seeing a lot of heavy hitters getting out there on the democratic side. everyone who wants to run for president potentially in 2020 will probably be out there. joe biden was out with the launch of early voting in nevada where one of my colleagues was at the event with biden firing up the culinary union in las vegas. we'll see more of that. but one thing democrats definitely don't want to be in a position of doing is having to

talk about immigration. they are really emphasizing that this need to be a debate about social security, a debate about health care. they don't want their members or their prospective members getting off message. after changing his voter registration from republican to democrat, former personal attorney to the president michael cohen is stepping up his efforts to get people to vote in the upcoming midterm elections. about a week ago, cohen tweeted in part the hashtag midterm elections 2018 might be the most important vote in our lifetime. hashtag get out the vote. hashtag vote november 6th. mj lee asked cohen what he meant by his tweet and this is what he had to say. >> here's my recommendation. grab your family, grab your friend, grab your neighbors. get to the poll. if not you're going to have another two or another six years

welcome back. after three weeks of losses, the dow snapped its losing streak on friday, prompting global markets to rally. that appears to be continuing. >> good morning. so overnight we saw an extremely robust trading session in asia. chinese stocks gained over 4%. this is on the back of chinese authorities' pledge to support the economy after, if you remember, friday's gdp report came in below expectations. this is feeding through to the european session. so far this morning in europe, we've seen stocks trade higher. u.s. futures seem as though they are taking this positive hint as well, poised to open higher in the u.s. now, away from what's happening

sitting at the big boy table. >> that's what we call it, actually, the big boy table. >> hey, wait a second. >> the axios one big thing is republicans trying everything before the midterm. so they're feeling the heat knowing that they have both an enthusiasm gap and a gap on the ground. so every day and we see it on your air something new. so you were just talking about the president's tax cut and he's saying that we're going to have a kavanaugh election, milking that. he's talking about the caravan election, talking that up. and it's growing as he talks about it. they are talking about the mob versus jobs. every time he goes out in a rally he sort of adds a litany to it and you see it picked up in the country, not only in the candidates' appearances but also in their ads and videos. >> mike, let me throw you one from the big girl's table down in washington. president trump, you mentioned the tax cut, he is suddenly bringing this thing up, talking about the possibility of this even though as you know congress is not in session. what are your sources telling

you guys about the rationale behind this. is this another way to boost his base? sn>> mike? >> hallie was asking you about the base in terms of how all this may affect the base in terms of how it plays out. it seems like there was an audio problem. the point she was trying to get at was simply with all of this playing out, the tariffs, the immigration, is it going to energize the republican base? >> that's what the president is trying to do and that's why this tax cut thing which was so out of left field, i called around on the hill, no one had heard about it. the president when he said it he thank you out the speaker, threw out the ways and means chairman, checked with their staffs, they said we are going to have to refer you to the white house. it's just this chum in the water idea and it is 100% at his people -- like when we were coming up in politics people paid attention to the middle, you tried to slice off a few,

there's none of that going on right now. >> let's talk about the tariffs that you brought up about the china, the china market is rallying a little bit. explain to us about the rationale in terms of the president easing up his tariffs on china if that is, in fact, what he is doing, but what's the rationale, what's the play that he's going after? >> the president wants to inflict more long-term pain. this is his comfort zone and we've talked in the past about how the republicans will argue about what he should do in europe or what he should do with mexico, but he has republicans behind him on china and we're told that after the election he's going to ratchet it up even more and axios jonathan swan was told that he want to inflict even more pain than he has before. of course, there could be a boomerang effect of pain here, can affect prices here, but the president is focused on china and it's going to do for them. he's not done. >> all right. it will be interesting to see how it plays out. >> mike allen, thank you much. thanks for all those audio
