♪ ♪ good morning, everyone. it is thursday, october 25th. i'm ayman mohyeldin. we begin with a lot of news. right now a nationwide investigation is underway after what amounts to assassination attempts against some of the president's most prominent critics, former president barack obama, hillary clinton, eric holder, john brennan at cnn, congresswoman maxine waters and george soros. the devices were sent in envel

hopes with debbie wasserman schultz listed as a bogus return address. a pipe bomb like the one found in the mailbox of george soros was found near the home of bill clinton and hillary clinton. it was scodiscovered by screene. then a routine screening of president obama's mail turnedup another explosive device. the package to eric holder was incorrectly addressed and wound up being sent back to wasserman schultz's address where it was intercepted by the secret service. >> the device addressed to brennan, an nbc analyst, was sent to cnn's time warner building in the heart of new york city. it was discovered in the mail room and the aftermath played out live on air. >> these are no longer suspicious packages. the fbi is saying they were

rudimentary but functional. that means they were exmoplosiv devices. excuse me. that sounds like a fire alarm here. >> the anchors continued reporting on the story until they couldn't any longer. >> we're going to jump in. there's a fire alarm here. >> we're going to be right back. >> this is cnn breaking news. >> and good morning. i'm renee marsh in washington, d.c. we are following some developing, breaking news. we can tell you at this hour the time warner building in new york city has been evacuated. jim and poppy harlow, who you saw anchoring, they had to evacuate the studio. >> forced out of the building, the reporters kept reporting on the street outside of the time warner meeting.

here's new york city mayor bill de blasio addressing reporters. >> this clearly is an act of terror, attempting to under mine our free press and leaders of this country through acts of violence. i want to make very clear that the people of new york city will not be intimidated. >> it was also confirmed last night that a second device addressed to congresswoman maxine waters was found at a mail facility in los angeles. earlier in the day it was discovered at a maryland mail facility. the devices were made of pvc pipe and contained a timer and powder from pyrotechnics. x-rays provided to nbc news from law enforcement officials also indicate that the devices likely contained shrapnel. a law enforcement official says the device addressed to john brennan appears to obtain a

parody image with an isis flag reading get her done. the president addressed yesterday's events briefly at a previously scheduled event on opioids. take a listen. >> the packages are being inspected by top explosive experts and a major federal investigation is now underway. the full weight of our government is being deployed to conduct this investigation and bring those responsible for these despicable acts to justice. we will spare no resources or expense in this effort. and i just want to tell you that in these times, we have to unify, we have to come together and send one very clear, strong, unmistakable message that acts or threats of political violence of any kind have no place in the united states of america. >> and of course we will have more reaction from the president

divisio divisions. and we have to do everything we can to bring our country together. >> former vice president joe biden weighed in, tweeting, quote, this country has to come together, this division, this hatred, this ugliness has to end. several reported have indicated that biden was also a target of these planned attacks, but federal officials stressed that nothing has been found at his delaware home. >> the president of cnn strongly criticized president trump on wednesday for his anti-media rhetoric hours after the pipe bomb was sent to the network's new york headquarters. in a statement, jeff zucker wrote, there is a total and complete lack of understanding at the white house about the seriousness of their continued attacks on the media. the president and especially the white house press secretary should understand their words matter. thus far, they have shown no comprehension of that. the package addressed to john brennan was one of several explosives sent this week to prominent democrats routinely attacked by trump. the president has called

journalists the enemy of the people, condemn ed -- he did no name the targets leaders, their party or cnn in either of his remarks. >> as he did during hurricane michael a few weeks ago, president trump carried on with his campaign rally last night despite all of this, this time heading to wisconsin where he poked fun at the idea that he should not engage in heated rhetoric during a time of national stress and uncertainty. watch. >> the democrats are for higher taxes, more regulation and more top down government control. by the way, do you see how nice i'm behaving? have you ever seen this? we're all behaving very well. and hopefully we can keep it that way, right? we're going to keep it that way. his radical far left opponent is

tammy baldwin, who wants a socialist takeover of health care. i'm trying to say that very nicely. see, normally i'd scream they want a socialist takeover. now i say, wants a socialist takeover. i'm trying to be nice. right? >> i want to bring in from washington daniel litman. let's talk about reaction as far as the discovery of these explosive devices. do you find a stark difference between the republican reaction and democrats, even with some fearing that more devices could be on their way? >> i think democrats have been pretty uniform in condemning this, but also talking about the role president trump plays in encouraging these types of extreme actions. he is not condoning this. he's not calling for these

attacks, but he's creating the atmosphere that lays the groundwork for someone in our country of 320 million americans, someone who's a little nutty to basically send these types of packages. so yesterday it seems like he was making light of his role in th that. >> let me ask you with this tough election cycle, if you want to call it that, that we kind of find ourselves in, what has been the conversation around the heated rhetoric of the moment in light of yesterday's events? are you hearing this kind of resonate on the campaign trail in some of the close election races that we are watching? >> i don't think, you know, the election campaigns that we're watching in the battleground states, i don't think they're going to be decided by these pipe bombs. you know, millions of people are already heading to the polls for early voting. and most people have concerns about their pocketbook issues or

approval or disapproval of trump. and they are not going to decide who to vote for just based on the incidents yesterday. but i think people factor this into their final decisions. maybe some of the swing voters, the undecideds in trump and his campaign, they even sent out that e-mail a couple hours after some of the attacks with the media accountability survey. that was probably not the best idea. >> the timing of this is not lost on anyone given the fact that we're just a few days away from this critical election. still ahead, new polling in some competitive midterm races we were just talking about, signaling some possible major changes in those contests. plus, new reporting on president trump's cell phone and how a lack of security on the device may be leaving it open to spies. to look at me now,

a new report reveals that chinese and russian spies are routinely able to listen in on president trump's not-secure cell phone calls. trump is known to call close friends of his to complain or get their opinions on a whole host of issues. he's often known to use iphone, one of which is no different to those available to the general public. he has one he uses for twitter, and the other only for calls. those are not totally secure either. however, current and former officials tell the "new york times" that aides have repeatedly warned president trump that his calls using his personal phone are actually not secure and that russian spies are routinely eavesdropping on the calls as well. that's in addition to the chinese, who according to u.s. intelligence reports, are putting to use valuable insights into how to best work the president and effect administration policy, including how to influence the on going

trade war between washington and beijing. despite all of this, trump has refused to give up his phones. they only hope he refrains from discussing classified information when he's on those call. a new poll in south dakota says the state could elect a democratic governor for the first time since 1974. the poll places kristi noem in a tie with billie sutton, a democrat who was paralyzed in a rodeo accident. the nbc news poll finds republican brian kemp at 46% and stacey abrams at 45% with libertarian ted mets taking 4%.

yesterday a federal judge ordered kemp, who oversees georgia's elections, to stop rejecting absentee ballots because of mismatched signatures without first giving voters a chance to fix the problem, this after an audiotape leaked to rolling stone with kemp expressing concern over the strength of abrams' absentee voter turnout. let's get a check on your weather now with bill karins. tell us about the rain. >> the big old rainstorm that's knocked down a lot of the leaves at their peak in the mid atlantic. besides that, i don't think too many power outages. we have airport issues to deal with, of course, with the rain. this morning the big rainstorm is soaking louisiana, now raining in much of mississippi, same with arkansas. actually continues all the way back into kansas and nebraska. over the next three days, this is a pretty big chunk here, we're taking the rain from the southeast, to mid atlantic

tomorrow, and saturday up through new england. pennsylvania could get two inches of rain. we're not going to get flooding out of that. of course this time of year you get thele lele leaves coming do the drains don't work as well either. this afternoon we take the rain into the panhandle of florida, a little bit here in alabama. as we go throughout the overnight into tomorrow morning, notice the rain really increases. friday during the day we soak all of the carolinas, then the rain arrives in virginia. d.c. is dry up until about 6:00 p.m. friday. this weekend as you wake up saturday morning you get the gusty winds on the coast, heavy rain from d.c. to philly to new york. kind of an ugly saturday morning. could be a little bit of snowy mix or maybe some sleet at the beginning edge of it in northern new england, but only the highest of elevations are going to get snow out of this.

welcome back. time now for sports. game two of the world series to boston where the red sox were first on board last night, plating a run in the second inning of a single to left field. the dodgers have an answer, scoring two runs off david price as he gives up a walk and three hits in the top of the fourth. in the next frame, price retires three straight and the red sox retake the lead, scoring three runs in a fifth inning rally that began with two outs and no runners on base with david price striking out five batters through six innings on the mound. the boston bullpen shuts out l.a. from there and the red sox take their second straight win by a score of 4-2. the dodgers hope to gain home field advantage as the series shifts to los angeles for game three friday night.

let's go to college hoops and to the courthouse for a verdict of guilty on all counts for three men in the first trial following the sweeping federal investigation into corruption in college basketball. sentencing for the three men charged for their roles in a pay for play scheme will take place on march 5th with two strait trials stemming from the fbi probe scheduled for february and april. let's shift to the nba and what could be cause for alarm in houston as james harden exited the rockets loss to the jazz last night with tightness in his left hamstring, leaving the game while houston trailed by seven points with more than five minutes to play. harden told reporters the injury is, quote, nothing serious and he's just being cautious. a lot of fans nervous after seeing that. >> it's going to come down to a crucial game three in los angeles. they have to make a stop to stop

let's get started with thursday's top stories. the explosive devices mailed to prominent opponents of president trump did not stop him from campaigning last night. the president spoke to supporters in wisconsin where he began his rally with a message for americans and a castigation for the media, including some from cnn, whose new york offices were evacuated after receiving a bomb. >> any acts or threats of political violence are an attack on our democracy itself. no nation can succeed that tolerates violence or the threat of violence as a method of political intimidation, coercion or control. we all know that. such conduct must be fiercely opposed and firmly prosecuted. we want all sides to come together in peace and harmony. we can do it. we can do it. those engaged in the political

arena must stop treating political opponents as being morally defective. have to do that. the language of moral condemnation and destructive routine, these are arguments and disagreements that have to stop. as part of a larger national effort to bridge our divides and bring people together, the media also has a responsibility to set a civil tone and to stop the endless hostility and constant negative and oftentimes false attacks and stories. have to do it. >> so former cia director john brennan, who was one of the intended recipients of yesterday's suspicious packages, is actually speaking out about the threat, saying he hopes they mark a turning point for this country. appearing at an event in austin, texas, he lamented the incidents

as an unwelcome reality for this country, but he hoped that they would help president trump change his own rhetoric. >> we're at a very unfortunate stage of our national history when we cannot have the civil discourse that we need about the future direction of our country and policies without having individuals, i think very disturbed individuals, resorting to attempted acts of violence. unfortunately, i think donald trump too often has helped to incite some of these feelings of anger, if not violence, when he points to acts of violence or also talks about, you know, swinging at somebody from the press, the media. unfortunately, i think donald trump has not helped to encourage the type of civil

discourse and public engagement and his rhetoric too frequently i think fuels these feelings and sentiments that now are bleeding over into potentially acts of violence. i'm hoping that this is going to make it clear to him that what he has done heretofore as a lot of this rhetoric really is counter productive. it is un-american. it is what a president should not be doing. what he said today is what the president should be doing, but follow up on those words with actions and future comments. now to former chairman from the democratic national committee, congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz. packages were found at two of her florida offices with only one of them being ruled a threat. that package was intended for former attorney general eric holder. the address for holder was wrong and wasserman shchultz's office

in sunrise, florida, was the return address. the packages sent to others were all had wasserman schultz's office as the return address as well. the congresswoman wrote, we will not be intimidated by this act of violence. this appalling attack on our democracy must be vigorously prosecuted. and i am deeply disturbed by the way my name was used. today my staff and i will hug other lo our loved one tightly. house majority whip steve scalise is calling for both sides to condemn the thwarted pipe bomb attacks writing these attacks are beyond criminal, they are acts of pure terror. violence and terror have no place in our politics or anywhere else in our society. then he spoke out later on in the day. take a listen. >> this isn't the way that we should expect america to be turning. you've seen more and more of

this. and clearly you've seen it on both sides. we all needs to be calling it out. we should be criticizing the act whether it's a republican or democrat. some people only criticize when it's a democrat under attack. the immediate was under attack too and there's no place for that either. >> the louisiana republican knows firsthand how devastating these kind of threats can be. we all remember him being shot at a congressional baseball game last summer. >> joining us once again, politico's daniel litman. let's talk about this bomb scare yesterday. obviously in the wake of it there's been all kinds of reaction. gauge to us, though, the reaction to the president's comments last night at his rally. there are some that are saying it lacked sincerity. >> it felt like he was forced to read his statement earlier yesterday at the white house,

you know, a very sober statement, something you would hear from any president. and then once he gets to his rallies, he becomes a different person and he's joking and not really condemning the violence as much as he should have done. bill crystal made a great point to brian williams last night that imagine if he invited the clintons and anyone else, maxine waters, who were attempted attack targets yesterday, invited them to the white house and kind of said we're all in this together,that would be quite something. >> what a power liful message t would have been. >> he used the word unity there. i want to ask you about that especially since we're seeing him more on the trail before the midterm elections. last night he kind of stuck to his script. he joked about being nice, never mentioned the obamas or the

clintons by name here. do you think we could see a shift in these last few weeks in his campaign style out there? >> he also did mention cnn as being the target or john brennan per se. of course, he went after brennan before in terms of taking his security clearance away. i don't think we're going to see that big of a shift. he's prepping for 2020. he is trying to save the house. so he views his rallies as a core element of that strategy. i had a story a couple days ago about how he doesn't even view the midterms as a real election. he's just doing his part to try to say the house. he used 2020 as a real thing and if he loses the house in two weeks he's going to just blame paul ryan and mitch mcconnell. so he's not going to look at himself when he is president

after all he can make a difference both on trying to save the house and also making the rhetoric a little less coarse. >> he's the campaigner in chief, so he does have that responsibility. thanks, daniel. >> thank you. for some time members of the gop along with the trump administration have aggressively tried to repeal obamacare. however, with 12 days until the midterms, republican candidates are making claims they are the ones working to protect people with preexisting conditions. >> reporter: president trump touting his administration's progress against the opioid epidemic. >> seized more than 2.8 million pounds of illicit and deadly drugs. >> reporter: the rate of overdose deaths beginning to slow down. but it's another health care claim from the president under scrutiny, tweeting republicans will protect people with preexisting conditions. >> republicans will always

protect americans with preexisting conditions. we protect you. >> reporter: in fact, republicans and the trump administration are aggressively trying to undercut obamacare that guarantees protections to people with preexisting conditions. but you wouldn't know it from watching these republican candidates' ads. >> earlier this year we learned our oldest has a rare chronic disease, preexisting condition. we know what that's like. >> i support forcing insurance companies to cover preexisting conditions. >> in wisconsin, preexisting conditions are covered. as long as i'm governor, they always will be. >> reporter: but theirs were among 20 stated who signed to a republican backed lawsuit arguing obamacare is unconstitutional. republican congressional candidates have embraced the issue as well. >> everyone agrees we're going to protect preexisting conditions. >> that's why i'm taking on both parties and fighting for those with preexisting conditions. >> but all three of those

republicans voted to repeal obamacare. in response, 15 republican senators are now cosponsoring a bill to prohibit insurers from turning away people with preexisting conditions, but insurers could exclude treatments for them. still ahead this morning, a potential major development in the special counsel's russia probe. a new report on possible ties between an associate of roger stone and the theft of hillary clinton's e-mails. plus, bill karins is back with the latest on that system bringing severe weather across the country.

the dow jones industrial average down more than 3%. huge, huge moves on those american industries. we've seen that be reflected overnight in asia. we've seen most of the major markets tumbling rapidly. wall street has seen its worst performance in a day since 2011. globally, we've lost $7 trillion worth of value from the global markets. if you look at where this money has been going, people often look for safe havens. we've seen traders reversing out of that the in the last couple of hours. in terms of the u.s. markets just ahead of the open on your side of the atlantic, all three of the majors are looking like they will open higher. you can take that as a birthday gift for yourself. >> i will take that.

welcome back, everyone. joining us now, co-founder and ceo of axios, jim vandehei. what is the one big thing you're looking for? >> we're looking at playing with fire now with what happened yesterday and the reaction that you see when you have this what amounts to a terrorist attack or attempted terrorist attack in the united states. kind of a very predictable response. you saw early on some of the right saying this could just be a conspiracy theory. you saw on twitter, you saw on social media a lot of taunting, a lot of tirades. a lot of people pointing their fingers. it doesn't take much of a spark for this to be much worse than it was yesterday. and for the most part, most politicians handled it well. it's pretty predictable what you should do. you should say this is awful, it shouldn't happen, let's unite and come together.
