in just one week voters will be going to the polls. in the closing days of the campaign president trump's approval rating is now dropping, down four points to 40%. his disapproval rating up to 54%. what was a six-point negative approval rating a week ago is now a 14-point gap. republicans are now pouring last-minute money into reliably red districts to hold off democratic challengers. the trump campaign announced it is spending $6 million to air a closing ad that does not feature a single image or mention of the president. the campaign tour has visits to west virginia, ohio, georgia, tennessee and montana. last night the president inflated the size of those rallies as the white house again tried to rewrite the history of

the 2016 election. >> i'm getting 25 and 30,000 people to these rallies. this isn't bragging. there's never been anything like what's happening. i went to illinois. a boeing 747, this massive hanger packed and they had to use a second hanger for the over flow. >> he got elected by an overwhelming majority of 63 million americans. >> as has been stated that claim is not true. president trump was not elected by a majority nor even a plur ralty to be accurate. he lost the popular vote by about 2.9 million votes. the spokesperson for the republican member of congress trump campaigned for in illinois estimated the rally size at 8,000, about a third of the president's claim. 46-year-old robert bowers showed no emotion during his

first court appearance yesterday. bowers was charged with 29 felony counts. that includes using a firearm to commit murder and killing people engaged in federally protected religious worship. that carried a maximum penalty of death if convicted. bowers also faces 11 state charges. his next court proceeding will be thursday morning. support continues to pour in for the tree of life synagogue in the wake of the horrific violence. a muslim-american group has raised more than $125,000 through an online crowd funding campaign to help families affect bid t affected by the shooting. the head of the pittsburgh islamic center said his congregation will stand side by side with the synagogue. >> we just want to know what you need.

if it's more money, let us know. if it's people outside your next service protecting you, let us know. we'll be there. >> president trump is scheduled to head to pittsburgh later today to meet with those impacted by the shooting. the white house made the announcement yesterday saying the president and first lady would travel to grieve with the pittsburgh community. the white house has not released an official itinerary detailing the trip but the white house tells nbc news that ivanka trump and jared kushner will also accompany the president on that trip. the tree of life synagogue's rabbi said he welcomes the president's visit. >> the president may come and visit. would you like to visit with him? >> it would be my honor to always meet a president of the united states. >> do you have something you'd want to say to tell him about your community and these good

people who lost their lives? >> these are good decent people. they didn't have an ounce of hate in any of them. we turn to the leaders of our country. we've got to stop hate. it can't just be to say we need to stop hate. we need to act to tone down rhetoric. hate is in the welcome here in pittsburgh. it should not be welcome in our borders at all. >> but not everyone in pittsburgh shares the rabbi's sentiment. the mayor urged against the president's visit. quote, while we were burying the dead. the mayor added that the city does not have enough public safety officials to provide protection at the funerals and for the president. after facing criticism, president trump doubled down last night during an interview with fox news embracing the term. >> at what point does a national

bring us together. >> so the pentagon announced that it will deploy 5200 additional troops to the southern border by the end of this week in response to a caravan of migrants coming to the united states from central america. the deployment is the largest since the response to the 2010 earthquake in haiti. the troops, a mix of active duty, reserve and national guard forces will join more than 2,000 national guard members already at the u.s./mexico border exceeding the combined u.s. military footprint in both iraq and syria, believe it or not. the top u.s. border security official estimates that the size of the original caravan at 3500 people. >> president trump has seized on the caravan as an issue ahead of the midterms. tweeting, many gang members and some very bad people are mixed into the caravan heading to our southern border. please go back.

elections kwe elections? >> the white house denies this is anything to do with politics, that they're simply trying to close down the border and protect americans. we're a week away from the midterm elections. president trump is deploying an unprecedented number of troops down to the border to take care of this. they will just be there assisting border patrol agents in trying to accommodate all of these asylum seekers as they enter the united states if they enter the united states which might not even happen before the midterm elections. i think this is president trump using this as a wedge issue in the final stretch before the midterms. obviously there are close senate and congressional races happening in border states like arizona, texas, california. obviously this beto o'rourke/ted cruz race is a hot topic.

so anything the president feels he can do to drum up the rhetoric around immigration is something that he's going to do and will continue to do all the way up to november 6th. >> we're watching him do that when it comes to the 11 rallies, eight states before the midterms. what's the reason behind leaving him out of this most recent ad? >> it was sort of surprising to see this ad. doesn't have any reference to president trump's likeness, no sound bites of him speaking. it totally omits the president. i think the reason for that primarily is because the trump campaign and republican officials really want to reach a part of the electorate that's white college educated women. it's an area he's really struggling with. it's a group of the electorate

attorney general jeff sessions was interrupted by two pastors yesterday while speaking at a religious freedom conference in boston. sessions was defending the trump administration campaign when the two pastors began daegaddressin him. the first pastor began quoting lines from the gospel of matthew that talks about taking in strangers in need. he also called on sessions to repent. the pastor was escorted out by police and moments later a second minister rose to speak. he too was escorted out of the room. the close race for georgia cover is now attracting the influence of two expresidents. former president barack obama slated to stump for stacicey abrams on friday.

and former president jimmy carter is weighing in. he's calling on brian kemp to resign over his role in overseeing the state's elections. in a letter to kemp, quarter wrote, i have officially observed scores of doubtful elections in many countries and one of the key requirements for a fair and trusted process is that there be non-biassed supervision of the electoral process in order to foster confidence in the upcoming election, which will be especially important if the race ends up very close. i urge you to step aside and hand over to a neutral authority the responsibility of overseeing the governor's election. the kemp campaign responded that it was sad, accusing abrams of using the former president to do her dirty work. let's get a check on our forecast with nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> east coast perfect the next two days. it's the middle of the country

criticizing the network for a segment on the political implications of recent terror attacks like the pittsburgh synagogue shooting. matt drudge tweeted a segment on fox news this morning where hosts laughed and joked their way on a discussion on political impact of terror was bizarre. check your soul in the makeup chair. he went onto tweet, is it really funny? he followed that with a series of screen shots showing other panel members with the text "hysterical." so gabby, we know the president is visiting pennsylvania today following that synagogue shooting. it's being met with some mixed emotions. how is the president going to balance the tone and the attacks that we've seen at theseunifyin showing empathy here? >> he's being urged by his advisors to really be careful with what he says at this visit.

at this point in time, president trump is being blamed for sowing a lot of division and contributing to this climate of incivility. for him to make this trip on a day when two funerals will take place, it's a time when he needs to show empty, when he needs to ral hi peoply people together. obviously in past visits like this, he has struggled to do that. he has made light of the situation. he has joked about different things that could have taken place that would prevent such tragedies from happening. in the wake of this shooting over the weekend, president trump said if only armed guards were in places of worship, something like this would be prevented. i think that's exactly the type of rhetoric he needs to avoid in his visit to pittsburgh today. >> let me ask you about the president and his administration's constant attack on the media.

they're not backing down from the fake news rhetoric against journalism. what has transpired in the past week that has made them unrerentiunrerent i -- unrelenting in this attack? >> president trump is a massive consumer of the media. we know that he receives headlines printed on his desk almost every morning. he'll often circle them and send them back to aides. i'm certain that "washington post" headline that he referenced in which his name appeared in a story about the pipe bomber is something that he seized on. he thinks this is a media trying to portray him as directly responsible for these attacks, both the one in pittsburgh and the pipe bombs sent to several democratic political figures. it's been made very clear in the past week that the president and his white house aides and senior officials are unwilling at this point to admit any role in contributing to this violence

and instead they're going to continue to criticize the media for unfairly portraying the president and his comments. so president trump is doubling down on labeling tallahassee mayor andrew gillum, the first african-american to be nominated for the florida governor, a quote thief. he said there is a choice between a harvard educated desantis and a thief. gillum has repeatedly said he did nothing wrong and the fbi told him he was not a focus of the investigation. trump cited a recent report that an fbi agent posing as a developer provides gillum and his brother with tickets to the broadway musical hamilton. >> you called andrew gillum, you referenced him being a thief. >> well, the fbi offered him tickets and he took them.

one week away, president trump, three of his adult children and their company are now facing a new lawsuit over allegedly conning consumers. the complaint filed in federal court alleges that trump, donald junior, ivanka and eric received payments from three business entities in exchange for trump promoting those businesses as legitimate even though they were get rich quick scams which misled investors. one of those companies offered, quote, extravagantly priced seminars on trump's real estate secrets. the lawsuit is being underwritten by a nonprofit whose chairman has been a democratic donor since the suit is quote an effort by opponents of the president to use the courts to advance a political agenda. back in 2016, trump agreed to

u.s. investors. this follows massive volatility last week but shows we're not quite out of the woods yet. yesterday stocks did open higher initially but sentiment turned sharply lower throughout the trading session after reports that the u.s. is considering clapping on tariffs on all remaining imports should the u.s. and china fail to come to an agreement around trade. so we with saw a huge in the dow, 900 points. we saw the s&p end negative again and we saw the nasdaq, the tech-heavy nasdaq stuffer the steepest losses. amazon was the leader there, down about 6.5%. quite steep losses there. let's see how things shape up today. one stock i want to zero in on before i hand back to you is tesla. this company has been in focus because ceo elon musk have been driving a lot of controversy around the shares. yesterday, bailey giffords said

they continue to support the strategy, continue to support the company's long-term ambitions and most importantly would be willing to provide further funding should tesla need it. so good news for tesla there. >> all right. juliana, i want to ask you about red hat. they reached an agreement to sell to ibm for around $34 billion. we're learning ibm wasn't the only company red hat missed about a deal. who is mission out there? >> this is the biggest deal in the company's history. they were not the only ones looking at this asset. google was among the potential bidders who were in talks for the company for quite some time. this is reflective of how much this asset means to these big, traditional tech giants. ibm, the only one willing to pay this $34 billion price tag. they're the ones who walked away

times pretty tense interview with the president for axios on hbo. in it, he made some news. he told us that he plans to use executive order to terminate birth right citizenship. it's embedded in the 14th amendment of the constitution. many legal scholars think the president doesn't have the authority to do it. he was unambiguous in this interview, that he plans to do it. that he's already talked with white house counsel. that he'll proceed with it. he understands the fact that a lot of legal scholars think it's dubious that he has the authority to do this without congress. you guys have been talking about sending troops down to the border, sort of just the raw politics right now of immigration. this is another move he's going to make. it's a huge deal for people who

become citizens because they were born on our soil. >> why isn't that -- it's your get when it comes to that, but why is it something that he would bring up now, knowing it would continue to rile up his base leading up to the midterms? >> this one, i don't think he intended to bring it up. he literally looked at swan and he goes, wait a second, i thought i'm the only one who knew i was going to do this. so i think it's something he was going to do after the election. they're focussing very much on that caravan and moving troops to the boardser even though most people don't think that's a necessary step. so he think he believes this stuff. some of it, obviously, it's a hot topic with his base.

when you look at some of these races, nothing gets republicans more fired up than talking about immigration. you walk fox news and you would think an army is coming the to invade our border. seems like a pretty extraordinary step given you're going to have of about two soldiers for every child that's trying to cross the border. so, again, like that yesterday, red hot topic. we're just at this point in politics right now, one week from the election when people think that the house will probably switch and that the senate might stay where everything is at a full boil between these shootings, between the rhetoric, the enemy, the people stuff yesterday, sort of in some ways nonsensical can, this idea of enemy, enemy, enemy. you'll see on a show sunday we had a very tense exchange about
