president trump's personal attorney rudy giuliani does another walk back. he's trying to clean up comments he made about plans for a trump tower in moscow. >> plus, it is day 32 of the shutdown. house democrats are rejected president trump's proposals. >> and senator kamala harris makes it official. she's running for president in 2020. good morning, everyone. it is tuesday, january 22nd.
2:01 am
well, president trump's attorney said sunday that despite multiple denials during the campaign, his client, president trump, continued conversations about building a tower in moscow until november 2016. nobody missed that one for sure. now giuliani is trying to walk back those statements saying, quote, my recent statements about potential trump moscow project were hypothetical and not based on conversations i had with the president. my comments did not represent the actual timing of any such discussions. the point is the proposal was in the earliest stage and did not advance between a nonbinding letter of intent. >> however, speaking to "the new york times" on sunday, giuliani quoted what trump said to him, that the discussions were, quote, going on from the day i

through the election. then he said he was talking in hypothetical terms today. >> i don't know. i don't talk about things i don't know about. unfortunately that sometimes happens, no different than anybody else. this wasn't a deal. we don't know the developer. we don't know the site. we don't know anything about it. ultimately it was michael cohen essentially trying to get a deal done. i don't think anyone took it all that seriously. that's the reality of what went on. >> in september of 2017, trump jr. testified he knew little about the project except that his father signed a letter of intent. >> new details about the buzzfeed story contending hard evidence that donald trump directed michael cohen to lie to congress. the president's legal team, quote, raised concerns in a

letter sent to the special counsel's office. it marked the first time that trump's legal team contacted mueller over a media report saying a person familiar with the matter. they hope the special counsel's office would address the report. hours later, the mueller team issued its statement. >> and it's day 32 of the shutdown and there is still no resolution in sight as congress prepares to pursue two dueling bills to reopen the government this week. house speaker nancy pelosi had not spoken to the president or anyone from the white house about trump's latest proposal that would give temporary to daca immigrants in exchange for a border wall. the house is expected to pass a series of spending bills that would reopen parts of the government that have nothing to do with the wall.

2:11 am
to claim unemployment benefits which may have to be paid back after the shutdown ends, but that's one of the things i would be looking at right out of the gate in terms of something that's an immediate consequence. and then, you know, the long-term consequences for those employees, you know, the consequences for the economy might go on longer if people have missed payments or if they're unable to pay bills on time. i think that's sort of the most immediate long-term consequences, sort of the effects on the individuals who have been furloughed. >> neil, let me ask you about the special counsel for a moment. what do you make about these reports that bob mueller's team made a statement. now the new reporting is that it was in some ways as a result of hearing from president trump's legal team about this specific report earlier in the day? >> well, as i understand it, the
2:12 am
reporting has been that it was highly unusual for the trump campaign to even -- or excuse me, the trump legal team to even reach out to the mueller operation. so i'm not so sure that we should read it in as if there is some sort of influence going on on the mueller campaign or, excuse me, on the mueller probe by the people who are associated with the trump campaign. but i do think that it does go to the gravity of what was in the buzzfeed report. and, you know, i think we're not going to find out for sure exactly how accurately or inaccurately the buzzfeed report was until mueller's report finally comes out because, frankly, you know, the statement from peter karr at the special counsel's office was so carefully worded that they sort of left the room for new things to come out.

>> it comes down to 7 letters, you see where the energy inside the democratic party is. they are the hottest thing when it comes to social media, they're the hottest thing to where starves want to go and work. you look at how well they perform and how much pickup it gets in the media. that is the earliest signal in what direction the democrat being party will go in during the 2020 campaign. we wand to test this so we did a poll. if aoc ran, if she could run, if she did would you vote for her? 17% said definitely and 75% said they're very open to the idea. she's not just a cultural phenomenon or political phenomenon for young voters, it's across the board for the democratic party. >> it comes back to it's a little bit about authenticity

with these two. they don't necessarily have that kind of political posturing you see with the more established politicians. >> they want people to be more forthcoming about what they bring to the table. how is this going to impact the 2020 presidential race? obviously alexandria ocasio-cortez can't run for president because of her age. >> the other candidates are taking their cues from these candidates. they want something fresh and want people who are authentic, but then you look at the policies when you talk about mass of tax hikes on the wealthy, a green new deal, medicare for all. you're seeing the party getting pulled to the left and being very proud of that. in the past democrats for presidential campaigns always felt like they had to appeal for the center and you're seeing almost a new theology being born out in realtime.

2:58 am
this. he told me this. here's why that matters -- he's admitting that the president of the united states was working on a multi-balancillion dollar bus deal while running for president. that's the reason giuliani had to put out that statement yesterday because the facts would be devastating. we lose sight of that, but think about what he was admitting on the record. that's almost as big a deal as what buzzfeed reported and then obviously had to walk back. so pay very close attention to what rudy giuliani is say about that moscow business deal. that would give russia something to hold over the president. if they knew there was a business deal that was live and flourishing and still being discussed when the president or then candidate was denying it, that would mean they had
