welcome back, everybody. joining us from washington, the co-founder of axios, mike allen. good morning to you. good to see you on this monday >> good morning. >> talk to us about axios's "1 big thing" today >> it's howard schultz's third way. as betsy was saying earlier, a lot of blow back online from democrats with the idea of him running for president. it was said there can only be one result of this, this is going to split the anti-trump vote and reelected the president, a totally unintended

consequence. i chatted with howard schultz last night and asked him about this he said he was unfazed by what was happening online this is something you almost never hear from a politician you rarely start a campaign saying you know people are going to hate you and howard schultz said i know that i'm putting myself in a position that's going to create anger, hate, disenfranchisement among friends, among democrats, but he says that he sees an opportunity here and i talked to a schultz adviser who said the opportunity that they see is that there's more moderates in the country than ever and they think that they have some polling saying they would draw equally from republicans, democrats, they think a strong centrist, independent candidate could take trump down to 26, 27, 28%, even with the magic of the trump base, that's not enough. >> so i'm curious to get your thoughts after speaking with him a little bit last night, what makes schultz so confident that he can actually win as an

late spring, early summer. he didn't answer whether or not he would completely fund it itself, just write a big check since he's a multi-billionaire that takes a lot of pressure off. the reason you have this flurry of announcements by democrats is they're having to build stuff and they're having to build a mechanism to raise money howard schultz already has some people quietly on his staff, steve schmidt, well known to your viewers as consulting to him. and so he doesn't have to jump in quite as fast >> let me get your thoughts on one other thing about the government shutdown, and in particular the border negotiations i know you have some inside reporting on why the president essentially caved in the border wall shutdown negotiations the first time around. is it likely we'll see an agreement in the next 18 days?

>> one, what was the trigger for the president to finally cave? jonathan swann reported from inside the senate punch on thursday, vice president pence was there, he could see the boots were moving away from him in a big way he said this must have been what the union lines were like right before first bull run. so the thinking inside the white house was better to pull the plug on our terms in our words than have an embarrassing vote with a bunch of republican senators moving away from us second question, why was mitch mcconnell so quiet it turns out it's because i told you so he told trump from the beginning that this would in the win and that they would in the wind up with leverage. mitch mcconnell was right. >> mitch, where was mitch? mike allen, appreciate it. >> have a great week >> you, too,
