. in a wide ranging interview president trump is weighing in on a variety of issues. he says another shutdown could be on the table. he doesn't know if he wants the mueller probe made public. new reporting on how president trump spend his days according to a white house leaker. nearly 60% of his schedule has been executive time. a growing number of democrats are calling for the resign nation of virginia governor ralph northam. he was digging in over the weekend despite a racist photo featured on his yearbook page.

good morning, everyone. it's monday, february 4th. there's a lot to cover this morning. we have to begin with the super bowl as the "boston globe" put it this morning, the dynasty rolls on. the new england patriots did it again, beating the los angeles rams 13-3, winning their sixth super bowl title in 17 years. the patriots are now tied with the pittsburgh steelers for the most super bowl titles in nfl history. we'll have all the game highlights later on in this show. we're getting new insight into president trump's day-to-day routine. the president has spent around 60% of his scheduled time over the past three months in what is called unstructured executive time. axios reported obtaining 51 pages that include private schedules from a white house source. the leak provides unprecedented visibility into how trump spends his days. he use much of his executive

time watching tv, reading newspapers and phoning aides about what he sees and reads. some days executive time predominates his schedule. back on january 18th, trump had two 30 minute meetings on the schedule and seven hours of executive time. on november 7th the day after the mid-terms the president's private schedule had 30 minutes for a meeting with the chief of staff. now in response to the reporting by axios, press secretary sarah huckabee sanders put out a statement reading in part president trump has a different leadership style than his predecessors and the results speak for themselves. >> lawmakers have less than two weeks to reach an agreement on immigration and border security before government runs out again and president trump says he's not ruling out another shutdown. >> would you shut down the government again? >> we're going to have to see what happens on february 15th. >> you're not taking it off the table. >> i don't take anything off the table. i don't like too take things off

the table. it's alternative. it's national emergency. it's other thing. you know, there have been plenty of national emergencies called and this really is an invasion of our country by human traffickers. >> according to "the washington post" senate majority leader mitch mcconnell has privately caused president trump about the consequences of declaring a national emergency to build his border wall. to republicans with knowledge of the exchange they say mcconnell told trump the move could divide the gop. mcconnell told trump congress might passing a resolution. according to two republicans who requested anonymity, mcconnell differed the message during a face-to-face meeting with the president last tuesday at the white house. mcconnell and trump met alone and conversed with no aides

present. their meeting of not publicly announced. >> after two years of silence, analysts are saying president trump is endanger national security. "time" reports according to intelligence officials who cite multiple in person episodes trump displays what one calls willful ignorance when presented with analysis. analysts who prepare the briefs describe futile attempts by keeping trump's attention. keeping briefing point to two or three sentences and repeating trump's name and title as frequently as possible. according to that report, officials and others in government and on capitol hill who have been briefed on these episodes said what is most troubling are trump's angry reactions when he's given information that contradicts positions he has taken or believes he holds.

two intelligence officers reported they had been warned to avoid giving the president intelligence assessments that contradict stances that he's taken in public. yesterday trump pushed back on criticism that he does not agree with the information he receives from his intel chiefs especially on iran. watch this. >> so, you're going to trust the intelligence you receive? >> i am going to trust the intelligence that i'm putting there, but i'll say this. my intelligence people, if they said, in fact, that iran is a wonderful kindergarten, i disagree with them 100%. >> your intel chiefs do say iran is abiding by that nuclear deal. >> i disagree. >> you disagree. >> that doesn't mean i have to agree. president bush had intel people that said saddam hussein and iraq had nuclear weapons, had all sorts of weapons of mass destruction. guess what? those intel people didn't know what the hell they were doing.

and they got us tied up in a war that we should have never been in. >> now the president also said this concerning why he wants to maintain a key u.s. military base in iraq. >> being in iraq was a mistake. big mistake. one of the greatest mistakes going into the middle east that our country ever made. one of the greatest mistakes we ever made. >> but you want to keep troops there now. >> we spent a fortune on building this base we might as well keep it. one reason i want to keep it is because i want to look at iran. iran is a real problem. >> whoa, that's news. you're keeping troops in iraq because you want to be able to strike sni strike in iran? >> no, i want to watch. >> the president discussed the highly-anticipated mueller probe. when asked if he wants it made public the president ultimately said it depends on what it says. >> would you make the mueller report public because you say there's nothing in there.

>> totally up to the attorney general. >> what do you want them to do >> teen mueller report said it had nothing to do with the campaign. when you look at some of the people and events it had nothing to do -- >> you wouldn't have a problem if it became public. >> i have no idea what it will say. i have been tougher on russia any president maybe ever, but any president. >> when it comes to the investigation that the special counsel is conducting, 34 people have been charged. >> you ready? of the 34 people, many of them were bloggers for moscow or people that had nothing to do with me or what they are talking about or they were people that got caught telling a fib or telling a lie. >> now to the big story rocking the political world. the governor of virginia who admits he wore black face and whose medical school yearbook page features a racist picture is ignoring a growing chorus calling for his resignation.

democratic governor ralph northam got a presidential message with the president tweeting out the real estatist picture and his denial is unforgivable. the governor says it's not him in the picture and he won't quit. >> reporter: virginia governor ralph northam faces a growing chorus of calls for his resignation over that racist photo. >> he has to resign. it's in the best interest of the commonwealth. >> reporter: officials nearly unanimous in their demands he step down. >> you got to work as one unit to move your commonwealth forward and he's not going to have that ability to do it. >> reporter: for some constituents it's not as clear cut. >> he's an honest hard-working man whose worked hard for this state for many years. we all have done things we're not proud of. . >> the way he handled this episode has it undercut his ability to govern effectively? >> i think so. again, that's something i struggle with personally because

i admire him, i respect him. >> i do like the fact that the democratic party is standing up for what they truly believe. i just think that it's the wrong direction and i don't think we should be throwing away people for decisions made 35 years ago. >> reporter: it's a test for how democratic presidential candidates will address racial tensions that intensified under president trump. and democrats fear northam can cost them. >> we have to deal with the noise we're hearing not just from virginia but from all over the nation how he's lost the moral authority to continue in that position. >> if he doesn't resign should he be forced out? >> he'll do the right thing before it gets to that point. >> reporter: there is no modern precedent for impeaching a governor. they hope he'll heed the calls to step aside but at the moment the governor is digging in. reports governor north in fact called an emergency meeting with senior staffers last night to discuss options including possibly stepping down but did not reach a decision. joining us now from washington, d.c. is co-author of the political playbook. let's talk a little bit about governor northam. there are reports now he's considering stepping down as we were just mentioning there meeting with his senior staffers and the like. what's the likelihood of him rebounding politically after this type of scandal? >> i think after this type of thing and controversy, it's very hard to come back because he'll always be seen as, associated with those pictures and nickname and very hard for him to be effective as virginia's governor. and people i talked to, they say that it would be embarrassing for democrats going into 2020. they don't want this guy to be associated with their party. they want to make sure to get as

many african-americans out to the polls. you know, the democratic party is trying to expel this guy from their ranks and contrast him with president trump who had his share of racist controversies. >> interesting to see the comparisons made between how democrats rally or if they abandon ralph north compared to other gop members who have been in difficult positions as well. >> reminded me -- remember the "access hollywood" tape in 2016 and you had that weekend of members of the republican party just abandoning trump and this felt a little similar. >> let's talk a little about the possible impact of another government shutdown. people watching that, very worried as we approach that deadline. republican leaders are, in fact, warning trump of the potential blow back if he decides to do something like declare as in emergency or allows another

government shutdown to actually take place. will that be enough to get the position, to get the president to move on his position? >> senate majority leader mitch mcconnell went to the president last week in a reporting confirmed by "the washington post" and told him that the national emergency of not the way to go. that the senate and congress might have to pass a resolution of disapproval saying that trump was going above his executive powers. that was not to be respected by congress. and anyway the courts would probably throw this out and would be messy and embarrassing to all sides. so, i think the message from the hillis to president trump don't interfere so much in trying to prevent the conference committee from making progress on a border security package. let them do their work, see what they come up with and then you can decide.

"times" revealed in de-that the trump golf club in bedminster, new jersey employed immigrants working illegally in the united states for years. the trump organization fired about 24 undocumented employees at its new jersey and briar cliff manor new york clubs. congress man grijalva is asking for an investigation into the trump organization. two republican senators who did not endorse donald trump in 2016 reversed their decision giving the president their support two years later ahead of the 2020 election. natures rob portman and corey gardner told the snpt nournl review they will back the president as the republican incumbent in 2016, both opposed trump's nomination with portman reis inning his endorsement of trump following the release of

"the washington post" reports that governor northam called an emergency meeting with senior staffers last night to discuss options including possibly stepping down but did not reach a decision. it all stems from this 1984 medical school yearbook photo that shows a man dressed in black face and another as a can you ku klux klansman.

he's a better person today. you know, he has an african-american as his lieutenant governor, and, you know, he seems to have changed. but you have this indelible picture that is not going to go away and a lot of people thought that he should just resign and not fight this. it just hurts and embarrasses him further. and the fact that he admits to, you know, putting shoe polish on his face and doing the moon walk, michael cohjackson's moon dance that wasn't good. his wife was not in property circumstances. >> so what your hearing about how virginia constituents, how are they particularly dealing with this scandal? how is this going down with virginians? >> i think a lot of virginians

are shocked that this came out. people are surprised that ed gillespie campaign did not find out about this, on some text chains with people in the gop community and everyone was just very surprised that gillespie did not manage to look inside the medical school library and get a copy of this yearbook. now it's open season on year books. every politician will have them examined and a lot of african-americans thought that northam was their friend. he might still be their friend but the fact that this picture really has haunted him and he claims that he wasn't in it, but says that he has improved as a person that indicates that at least as a 25-year-old he had some troubling views. still ahead why one of the
