>> good morning, everyone, it is wednesday, february 6th, there were a lot of big moments from last night's state of the union address. but we're going to begin with this one. after calming for greater political unity, president trump went on to criticize partisan investigations without mentioning robert mueller's ongoing probe by fame. watch. >> an economic miracle is taking place in the united states and the only thing that can stop it a foolish wars, politics, orie dig lus partisan investigations. [ cheers ] if there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation. it just didn't work that way. we must reject the politics of

revenge, retribution and embrace cooperation, compromise, and the common good [ applause. [ applause ]good.[ applause ] >> president trump spent part of his state of the union speech touting the success of the u.s. economy under his administration's watch. >> in just over two years since the election, we have launched an unprecedented economic boom. a boom that has rarely been seen before. there has been nothing like it. >> so while the president has continuously enjoyed taking credit for a strong economy, there is little evidence that he created it. some economist versus argued that his tax cuts boosted the already thriving economy that began under former president obama and while the u.s. economy is strong, it has grown at a

faster rate in previous years. the president also focused on the jobs created during his time in office. >> we have created 5.3 million new jobs and importantly added 600,000 new manufacturing jobs, something which almost everyone said was impossible to do. >> fact check moment here the president was off on the manufacturing figures sentence he took office. the u.s. has added 454,000 jobs in that sector, some of the biggest gains if 20 years, according to data. but that trend also began under former president obama back in 2010. >> as expected, the issue of immigration took often huge chunk of the president's address as he tried to convince incredulous democrats that a border wall is, in fact, a necessity. >> wealthy politicians and do nors push for heavy living,i

living behind gates and guards. americans are left to pay the price for mass immigration, reduced jobs, lower wages, over burdened schools, hospitals that are so crowded you can't get in. increased crime. and a depleted social safety t net. tolerance for illegal immigration is not compassionate. it is actually very cruel. in the past, most of the people in this room voted for a wall, but the proper wall never got built. i will get it built. this is a smart, strategic see-through steel barrier, not just a simple concrete wall. simply put, walls work and walls

save lives. >> as we have mentioned countless times, illegal border crossings have been declining for decades in this country. in fact, in 2017 the number was at a near 50-year low and has only increased in recent months as families tried to cross over. the president ad-lib adeline last night in his address that contradicts his administration's policy. watch this. >> i want people to come into our country in the largest numbers ever, but they have to come in legally. >> all right. so that part there where the president claimed he wants legal immigrants to come in the country in quote the largest numbers ever was not in his script as the "new york times" and others have reported. he has actually backed a plan to cut legal imflation by half. >> more fact checking. the president was checked by the sheriff of el paso, texas for

making this claim. >> this powerful barrier almost completely ended illegal crossings. the border city of el paso, texas used to have extremely high rates of violent crime. one of the highest in the entire country and considered one of our nation's most dangerous cities. now, immediately upon its building, with a powerful barrier in place, el paso is one of the safest cities. >> so, el paso sheriff richard wiles responded with this statement. it is sad to hear president trump's state falsehoods about el paso, texas, in an attempt to justify the building of a 2,000

mile wall. the facts are clear, while it is true that el paso is one of the safest cities in the nation, it has never been considered one of our nation's most dangerous cities. and el paso represents what this great nation is all about. at one point, when he was talking about another caravan, nancy pelosi signaled for groening democrats to settle down. >> as we speak, large organized caravans are on the plauch marce united states. we have just heard that mexican cities in order to remove the illegal immigrants from their communities are getting trucks and buss to bring them up to our country in areas where there is little border protection. >> all right. so after the president spoke, stacey abrams delivered the

democratic response to the state of the union last night. the georgia democrat hit the president on a number of issues, including his policies at the southern bordered and his trouble with the truth. >> we know bipartisanship could craft a 21st century immigration plan. but this administration chooses to cage children and tear families apart. compassionate treatment at the border is not the same as open borders. president reagan understood this. president obama understood this. americans understand this. and democrats stand ready to effectively secure our ports and borders. but we must all embrace that from agriculture to healthcare to entrepreneurship, america is made stronger by the presence of immigrants, not walls. even as i am very disappointed by the president's approach to our problems. i still don't want him to fame. but we need him to tell the truth. and to respect his duties and

respect the extraordinary diversity that defines america. >> earlier tuesday, president trump delivered an unfiltered thoughts and insults toward political opponents, including one that passed away last year. it happened at a private lawn u lunch for television anchors. multiple people in the room report that trump said sneaker nancy pelosi is nice to him in private and says terrible things on camera and chuck schumer can be a nasty sob. trump says he wants to run against former vice president joe biden. quote, i hope it's biden. he was never very smart. he was a terrible student. his gaps are unbelievable. when i say something you think is a gav gap. it's on purpose. when biden says somebody dumb, it's because he's dumb. on senator elizabeth warren, i

hope i haven't damaged her too badly. i'd love to run against her and john mccain repealing the affordable act in 2017. they say quote although mr. mccain is died, mr. trump remains upset. by the way he wrote a book and the book bombed. however the president is incorrect on this one. mccain's book spent seven weeks on the new york time's best seller's list. the white house declined to comment about those remarks. man, what can we say? >> not much. >> let's bring if mollie, mollie, save us from this moment. help us out here for a second. of course, no introduction needed for mollie. let's talk a little quickly about the big take aways from last nate's state of the union address. what are the biggest take aways for you? >> well, for me, as one who covers capitol hill and has been following this deposit shutdown, what was notable is that the president did not bring up this idea of declaring a national emergency in order to build the wall so to speak and that's one

thing that both republicans and democrats warned him against doing. because right now you have negotiators, they have ten days, bipartisan, bicamera negotiations are taking place. they have ten days to work out a deal to get border security funding. we'll see if they can do it. today, in fact, they have a closed-door meeting with experts in the field. i have talked to several of those negotiators. she says they could possibly have some sort of deal, maybe not necessarily in the next ten days, but, but they're seeing light at the end of the tunnel. i think the president not mentioning a national emergency, that -- >> a sigh of relief? >> yes. yes. >> for now. >> for now, exactly. >> for now. that's the one thing going into this speech. you talk to republicans and ask them, what do you expect of this speech? they said, you never know with this president. >> and you never know what happens two days later on twitter by the way, one thing

the state of the union, two days later things change on twitter. especially what he will be reading people's reaction to the state of the union last night. i also want to talk about the democratic response, mollie, from stacey abrams. she wrote her own speech. a lot of democrats on the hill really happy with the way it went down and her response as well that famous line we actually played which is i don't want the president to fail, but i want to truth from him. that's getting played, getting a lot of play out there as well. talk to me about some of your take aways from her response. >> well, keep in mind, historically, this is a very tough act. when you are delivering the response to the state of the union address, people have been known to bomb. marco rubio, you look back several years, he had the incident with watt. still to this day, think he can't live that down. >> he can't live that down. >> it's really one of those situations where it's an opportunity, you are basically set up to fame. and democrats had a tough time figuring out who they are grand

jury to select, because there are so many top ranking democrats who are running for president. so by choosing stacy abrams, i think that democrats a pleased, number one, she gave a strong speech. a strong rebuttal that again she doesn't want the president to fame. that was an important point to make, especially on these times where we are on the verge of another government shutdown. democrats don't want to see that. at the same time, she was very strong in her conviction and she wasn't kick anyone off, she's running for president in 2020. i think an all those accounts, she did a good job. according to congressional, you know, lawmakers, senators and what not. >> all right. mollie, thank you very much. we will talk to you in a bit. thanks, mollie. still ahead, a lot to get to outside the state of the union, the ongoing chaos in virginia, as the governor and lt. gov. deal with the fallout. plus senator elizabeth warren is facing new fallouts

they call as steps for ralph northam to step down after a racially charged photo was released last week. he denies he is in the picture. lt. gov. fairfax is next in line to replace him. despite that, 2020 candidates are focused on november northam's controversy. massachusetts senator elizabeth warren has this to say. >> what do you have to say about the allegations against lt. gov. fairfax? >> you know, allegation have to be taken seriously. it doesn't belie the fact that lt. gov. fairfax should be stepping down. >> senator corey booker says we need to focus on what is happening with the governor. >> senator warren is not fighting a card in which her race is marked american indian. the washington post says they

used an open record, which says she filled out by hand and signed dated april, 1986. it is a previously undisclosed example of her identifying as a native american. last week, warren apologized for the first time to the chiefs of the cherree nation for her heritage claims. she says, i can't go back, but i am sorry for further confusion on tribal sovereignty and citizenship and harm that resulted. speaking last year, she says she never used her family tree to get a break or get ahead. all right, let's get a check on your weather with nbc meteorologist bill kierans. bill, all that warm weather, it's gone away, some nasty weather headed to the northeast in the middle of the country. >> some areas hit 70. they have to deal with ice. call it weather, call it what you want, it's changing rapidly, a lot of people say if you don't like the weather, wait five

minutes. several people are under winter storm warnings, winter weather advisories from the central plains to the mid-west. even now, winter advisories through new england. we have flood watches that are up. not only that, we have a chance of severe storms today. 7 million people are at slight risk. people from the dallas-ft. worth area, where the mississippi and ohio river meet near paducah and national and isolated tornadoes later on this evening. it will be an after dark type thing, too, so it could be dangerous, so, here we go. 5:00 a.m. this morning, heavy rain throughout the ohio valley. by the time we get to 5:00 p.m. that rain is knocking on the tear in new york city. rain begin figure philadelphia for the evening commute. so bring the umbrella if you will be getting home later on this afternoon and evening and heavier rain in west virginia. notice the pink in here? that's a little loo freezing

welcome back, everyone. it is the bottom of the hour. let's start with the morning's top stories. during last night's state of the union speech, president trump addressed his trade war with china and the current state of the negotiations with beijing. >> to build on our incredible economic success, one priority is paramount, reversing decades of calamitous trade policies, so bad. the theft of american jobs and wealth has come to an end. therefore, we recently imposed tariffs on $250 billion of chinese goods and now our treasury is receiving billions and becomes of dollars, but i don't blame china for taking advantage of us. i blame our leaders and representatives for allowing

if i had not been elected president of the united states, we would right now in my opinion be in a major war with north korea. much work remains to be done, but my relationship with kim jong-un is a good one. chairman kim and i will meet again on february 27th and 28th in vietnam. >> all right. so despite trump's claims, just last week, in fact the director of national intelligence dan coats said it was quote unlikely north korea will de-nuclearize, in addition, vice president mike pence told a group of diplomats at the state department last month that north korea has not taken any quote concrete steps to dismantle the nuclear weapons that threaten our people and our allies. and a recent report revealed that north korea may have as many as 20 secret undisclosed ballistic missile bases in that country. >> while america may not be fighting on the korean

peninsula, the united states has been at war in afghanistan for more than 17 years and the president gave an update on the state of peace negotiations there. take a listen. >> great nations do not fight endless wars. in afghanistan, my administration is holding constructive talks with a number of afghan groups, including the taliban. as we make progress on these negotiations, we will be able to reduce our troop's presence and focus on counter terrorism. we do not know whether we'll achieve an agreement, but we do know that after two decades of war the hour has come to at least try for peace. and the other side would like to do the same thing. it's time. >> meanwhile, army general joseph votell who leads the u.s. central command overseeing

american military operations in the middle east is warning that isis could recapture ground following president trump's planned troop withdrawal from syria. a decision he said he was not a part of. >> general, were you aware of the president's intention to order the withdrawal of our troops from syria before that was publicly announced? >> i was not aware of the specific, that announcement. certainly, we are aware that he had expressed a desire and an intent in the past to depart iraq. >> so you weren't consulted before that decision was announced? >> we were not. i was not consulted. >> and when it comes to declaring a national emergency for a border wall, nbc news' kasie hunt followed up with the senate majority leader after the post reporter kaugsd. over the move. >> reporter: do you you agree with the president not to declare a national emergency? >> what i said is pretty much

what we're talking about here. what is the procedure? we've not had the procedure before because the national emergencies that have been issued in the past have not been contentious. i'm pretty sure that this one would be. >> all right. >> very diplomatic. this would be contentious. i think it's a little more than contentious. >> joining us, the washington reporter from the hill. respond to what other republicans are saying what mitch mcconnell said there. >> well, they're a little more unspoken. the senate is an unusual body. they're all about rules and procedures, even though it doesn't seem like they have a lot of rules sometimes because they can talk and talk and talk. but for the most part, they don't like to set precedents that will allow the next president or the next senate to follow their axles. and some republicans see this as, you know, if president trump does declare a national emergency on a contentious issue, what's to prevent a

democratic president down the line from doing the exact same thing? and so that's one of the reasons why a lot of them are not in favor of this. and i am told that at a lunch that yesterday that basically john thune said to the republicans, hey, listen, if you have a problem with this, just take it up with the white house. don't come to us. go to them. because they need to hear from you directly. balls, you know, if the president does take this action, there is a possibility that a senator or a democrat could bring up a resolution of approval or deny the president the ability to declare a national emergency. in which case it's unclear whether or not that would fail. it might, in fact, pass? if that passed in the senate. >> the president would have to veto it. >> that's true. house democrats are sure to seize on it and hold a vote. exactly the president would have to veto it. >> let me get your thoughts on this interesting testimony from general votell, the fact that he is ac knowledgeing he was not

consulted about the president's decision to withdraw troops from syria. he said he knew the president thought about it but didn't actually get any kind of consultation prior to the decision. what does that say about this president and his relationship with his generals when he makes a major announcement about our troops without consulting the top general in the region? >> well, that basically, speaks as to what happened in the senate. the body passed the measure 77-20-something. i'm great at math. but that basically says the president could not, they disapprove of the withdrawal, the precipitous withdrawal of forces from afghanistan and syria. you know, essentially, without a detailed plan and this is one of those things, it's not a binding resolution. this measure that mitch mcconnell offered, mind you, and that a majority of republicans favored, but at the same time, you know, republicans in congress are the ones who are particularly concerned about

this. yes, angus king was concerned. democrats are concerned. but quite a few of them voted against that resolution. >> right. >> last night, what was interesting in the state of the union is when the president was talking about withdrawing troops from afghanistan regions, the region, who was standing? a lot of democrats were standing. because traditionally that's a position that democrats have taken. so it's kind of this bizarreo world here. even though they are for that democrats want to have a detailed plan and don't want to to do that without hearing from the generals on the ground. i think they feel the president has not been listening as well as he should. >> it's pretty worrisome to say the least the u.s. head of command found out about troop withdrawal on twitter along with everybody else. >> mollie, thank you, it was a pleasure. >> thank you. >> nice to see you. in a striking visual last night as well, mr. democratic women wore white in a nod to the

american suffragist movement. president trump today specific mentioning the historic number of women elected to congress last november, many of whom opposed his policies. >> all americans can be proud that we have more women in the work force than ever before. welcome back. a government watchdog says trump's trips to his mar-a-lago resort cost taxpayers $14 million, some $3.3 million each. the report from the government accountability office is the first official of trump's travel looking at 14 days total in 2017. it reveals a much higher price tag than earlier estimates originally pegged at $1 million per trip. they now hover around $1 million per day. the tally includes $8.5 million spent by the defense department and another $5 million by the

department of homeland security and $60,000 paid to mar-a-lago itself mostly to secret service for operational space. the report also includes nearly 400,000 spent protecting trump's sons and their spouses during three international trips taken for trump organization purposes during that same span of time. according to the "washington post," president trump has taken 19 trips spanning 51 days to mar-a-lago since his inauguration. the post estimate the cost of all his florida vacations could be $64 million. >> to think that could have been me on the president used towards the border wall if he wants to build. the investment firm founded by president trump's inaugural committee apparently looked to profit off his connections to administration and foreign powers according to a confidential memo obtained.
