yasmin yossoughian. the president is preparing for his second summit with jkim jong-un. he said he and kim expect the progress made at the first progress in singapore. he also thanked china's xi for his support adding the sanctions placed on the border between china and russia have been helpful. last year the u.n. reported those sanctions on fuel shipment and trade have been rendered ineffective due to moscow and beiji beijing's actions. at the time mike pompeo and nikki haley called out russia for actively attempting to undermip andunde undermine and evade north korean sanctions. the president tweet eed yesterd chairman kim realizes perhaps

mike pompeo was asked about the president's position while also discussing the goals for the summit. >> do you think north korea remains a nuclear threat? >> yes. >> but the president said he doesn't. >> that's not what he said. >> he tweeted there's no longer a nuclear threat from north korea. >> he said theest est efforts m singapore have substantially taken down the risk. we're aiming to keep the people of the united states secure. secretary pompeo privately told north korean experts that the united states would be lucky if north korea dismantled 60% of what was demanded.

the intelligence agency assessments contradict the president on north korea, iran, saudi arabia and the islamic state. privately pompeo vents his frustration on those items including earlier this month on iran in poland. mike pence denounced several allies for not agreeing with m president trump to pull out of the iran nuclear deal. privately pompeo erupted in anger saying pence undermined diplomacy. publicly the secretary remains silent. president trump ordered a series of additional tariffs on china be delayed as washington and beijing work to hammer out a deal. tariffs on 2$200 billion worth f chinese goods were set to rise from 10% to 25% this friday, march 1st. trump announced the delay yesterday on twitter writing i'm

that terminology he was using there. joining us now from washington, blake houndshel. good morning. >> good morning. >> talk to us if there's any reaction to trump finally breaking his silence about the recent threats against journalists considering some of the past remarks we just played. >> he did so pretty reluctantly. it's been several days. as we saw from the clips you showed, he has a long track record of saying things about violence against journalists, and if you have been in a bullpen at one of his rallies, it's frightening stuff. it's all egged on by this president. just saying he's sad about this incident, saying his rhetoric has been very nice, certainly doesn't make someone like me feel better. you know, politico spent tens of

thousands of dollars beefing up security. a lot of news outlets -- i'm sure msnbc spent thousands of dollars adding to security. just hearing that the president is sad about this when he's daily calling us fake news and seeming to egg on people like this, it's really disturbing. i think the reaction to this has been scoffing from lots of people. i have not seen anyone prominent. i would like to see other people condemn it. certainly people are not taking him seriously on this. >> i think it's a bit of an example of a double standard that he tweets out about other acts of violence or threats of violence when he knows the identity of the shooter and it fits in his political narrative. in times like these, he hides behind things and says i'm waiting to be briefed before making a political statement or conclusion. another interesting development here, there's an obvious disagreement between the president and some top national security intelligence officials about the threat posed by north

korea, even mike pompeo yesterday saying that north korea is still a nuclear threat despite what president trump was tweeting out that it was not. could this have an impacted on the upcoming talks between trump and kim this week when you have the u.s. really on -- senior members of the administration on disagreeing sides? >> yeah, absolutely. pompeo's job is really not an enviable one. he's been handed this sort of flaming bag of poop, i would say. i don't think that anyone besides this president is excited heading into this summit. north korea continued to expand its missile program. working on more material to make nuclear bombs. the more nuclear weapons and the more missile capability north korea has, the harder it will be to take them away. just like a kid with chocolate. the more chocolate they have, the harder it is to take away. so the -- it's understandable that pompeo and the president

they have video of kraft in the act. he was caught during an eight-month police investigation into human trafficking which led to nearly 300 arrest warrants. kraft is not charged with human trafficking. a spokesman for kraft released a statement saying we deny that mr. kraft engaged in any illegal activity. because it's a gjudicial matter we will not comment further. the nfl said they are aware of the ongoing matter and will continue to monitor developments. the lawyer for r. kelly says the singer may not post bail for a few more days. kelly is being held in chicago on $1 million bond following his arrest on friday. his defense attorney says kelly is capable of posting his $100,000 bail, but with others coordinating to secure his release while kelly is behind bars. the payment may not be made until monday or tuesday. kelly surrendered to police on

. welcome back. it's the bottom of the hour. let's start with the top stories. deadly violence erupted on venezuela's borders over efforts to get humanitarian aid into the country over the weekend. saturday was the unofficial deadline set for juan guaido to move shipments of food and medicine into venezuela. nicolas maduro deployed troops that clashed with crowds trying to force their way into the country ahead of the trucks. the guards fired rubber bullets and tear gas at the crowds. demonstrateders reportedly threw

rocks and molotov cocktails at troops also setting fire to a bus. at least four people were killed and hundreds injured after the violent clashes on friday and saturday. over two dozen solders defected. republican senator marco rubio warned that the violence could mean possible u.s. intervention tweeting on saturday that after discussions tonight with several regional leaders, it's clear the grave crimes committed today by the maduro regime opened the door to various potential multilateral actions, not on the table just 24 hours ago. following that weekend of violence in venezuela, vice president mike pence will hold his first meeting with juan guaido today in colombia. the two will meet after venezuela's opposition leader, guaido, called for international allies to consider all options to free venezuela from nicolas maduro after the deadly clashes between the military and protesters at the border. according to aides to the vice president, pence's trip is a

signal of support for guaido who declared himself as interim president. the u.s. is considering announcing new sanctions that could cut off the maduro government's access to funding as soon as today. president trump has announced his pick for the next u.s. ambassador to the united nations. on friday evening trump tweeted out that he will nominate kelly knight craft for that position. she is the current u.s. ambassador to canada and also a major republican party donor. mitch mcconnell personally recommended craft forever the position. she is a kentucky native and wife of joe craft, a coal barron. they have given about 1.5 million dollars to gop candidates in 2016 alone, including nearly 280,000 to trump's campaign committee for his joint fund-raising committeed with the republican

national committee. according to the "washington post," the crafts have been repeat high-paying customers at trump's hotel in washington. according to a list of vip arrivals distributed to staff last season. that list was intended to help staff identify that trump international hotel's most important customers as they checked in. the house is expected to vote on whether to overturn the president's border wall emergency declaration tomorrow. in the senate democrats need to pick up four republican votes to pass it there. according to the "washington post," five republican senators say they're opposed to the emergency declaration. senator roy blunt is among those expressing concerns. here he is speaking yesterday. >> i think we'll have to evaluate whether this is really the intention of an emergency. is it really an emergency if, again, the president asked the congress to do it and they failed to, that's different than the way the law has been used in the past. >> you could vote to try to block the president moving

forward with this emergency. you just haven't decided yet. is that fair? >> i think fats fathat's fair. >> the president promised to veto any attempt to block his order. analysis by gallup found that president trump's state by state approval slightly improved last year. 17 states gave ratings of 50% or higher for trump. better than just 12 back in 2017. 16 states rated him below 40%. the states where trump is popular are far less populated than where he is chronically unpopular. judging by their weight in the electoral college, there are just 102 electoral votes in the 17 states where his approval is above 50%. trump's approval remains above

40% in every swing state he carried, so his path to re-election remains wide open. as speculation grows about when bob mueller will finish his final report on the interference in the 2016 election, house democrats are planning to take action if the findings are not released to the public. democrats are prepared to subpoena mueller and take the trump administration to court if necessary. >> we will subpoena the report. we will bring bob mueller in to testify before congress. we will take it to court if necessary. in the end i think the department understands they'll have to make this public. i think barr will understand that as well. if he were to try to withhold, bury any part of this report that will be his legacy. it will be a tarnished legacy. i think there will be immense pressure not only on the department but on the attorney general to be forthcoming. >> you're talking about public pressure. are you preparing to take the administration to court? >> absolutely. >> joining us once again from

washington, editor-in-chief of politico magazine, blake hounshell. really quickly, do you think the democrats could genuinely compel bob mueller to "a" disclose the findings of his report if it is not made public? or at least compel him to testify and in doing so release some information of the report? or is this mostly political posturing by house democrats? >> there's always some element of political posturing, of course. it is washington. i think they're working on william barr, the new attorney general. they're trying to make it clear, amp the pressure on him that they want him to turn over whatever he has. this is a highly unusual situation. we don't know what form the mueller report is going to take. it could be simply a letter to barr saying i'm done. mueller out, mic drop. so we don't know whether there's going to be some sort of cinematic level of detail like we saw in the 9/11 report after those attacks.

it is a question of what's in there. sometimes these reports can be as simple as here's what i decline to prosecute. as we know, nobody goes into front of cameras and says why they're declining to prosecute someone several weeks before an election. >> i wonder how this will play politically for the democrats, if they decide to go all in on this and the president is not necessarily implicated in these mueller findings. yet the democrats continue to try and hammer out more, let's say, and hammer out bob mueller and try to get more information from him. how will it play for the democrats as we look towards 2020? could they lose support i guess is what i'm asking. >> one thing that's interesting, this is very much a washington story. you have got adam schiff who is not exactly a household name working this here in d.c. where the 2020 democratic candidates are, you don't see them talking about the mueller

report very much. they're talking about healthcare, about the economy, they're talking about jobs. so i think politically it's probably something that most of the country is not paying much attention to. they're worried about their next paycheck. but certainly i think democrats would have egg on their face if nothing comes up in this report. i think given all we've seen from the president, everything he's said about the investigation being a witch hunt and all of the actions he's taken, allegedly intimidating witnesses and things like that, we'll expect something to speak to the claim that he obstructed justice. it's just a question of where that fits in the political arena and who wins the arm wrestling match on camera. >> speaking of political arena, this week you will have michael cohen testifying on capitol hill a few different times. i'm sure there will be political theater in that. blake hounshell, live in d.c. for us, always a pleasure. >> thank you. still ahead, president trump unveils his proposal to celebrate the fourth of july and

ryan zinke is facing new scrutiny. prosecutors have begun producing evidence to a grand jury in washington on whether zinke lied over his decision to not approve of a petition in 2017 by two indian tribes to operate a commercial iscasino. the bid by the tribes resulted in a lobbying campaign by mgm international which opposed the casino. the interior department's office of inspector general opened an investigation into the matter a year ago concluding that zinke had lied to them and referred the probe to the justice department late last year. now, both the justice and interior departments declined to comment to the post and zinke did not respond to the paper. in an interview with the post last month he denied wrong doing in connection with the casino deal. let's turn to business now ahead of a sitdo dosit-down wit
